Disable Save to Desktop / Documents Folder

Hello,
we are building some restricted Clients for a special room and we need to disable the save as dialoge
When open a PDF-Document in InternetExplorer and then want to save it, the default path is set to My Documents (Instead of the default "Downloads" save location from IE) . We have already disabled the Libarys via Registry but in the "save
as" dialoge they are still there.
We want to achive that a User can only save files to a fileserver and nowhere else. Additionally we have seen this in the open dialog with the desktop as default path, which we want to disable also. Normally the User see anything in the Desktop (restricted
via GPO), but unfortunately its possiable to save and open files there.
I have looked at User- and ShellFolder Registry Keys to custimize the dialoges but it works, but possibly not the best solution. Also I know thats possiable to work with folder redirection, but then the libaries are still there.
Is there a way to disable the "documents" and "desktop" save-as dialogs, so that its noted by the application and only show the share path?
I hope its possiable to understand what I mean :-)

  • I can't save downloads to documents folder, only to desktop...

    Only desktop saves are allowed.  The message states, "Word cannot save or create this file.  This disk may be full or write protected..." The disk isn't full, so I'm not sure what to do.  I'm having to save everything to the desktop and then move files into document folders in Finder.  Any advice on how to save directly to documents or what may be wrong?   Thanks so much!.

    Back up all data now.
    This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
    If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. You can demote it back to standard status when this step has been completed.
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
    Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
    The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
    Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
    When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
    In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
    That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
    Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
    Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
    Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • Files have vanished from my Desktop / Document folder

    Really not sure where to post this....
    Something very strange and bad has just happened to my computer. I plugged in my external Lacie hard drive to start a backup and, using the app that came with it, it informed me that there was no room left on the drive, shall it delete the back up and start over which is pretty standard. However as soon as it stared, the files that were on my desktop disappeared completely so all i now have is the back drop picture.
    It looks as if the app. has treated my home folder the way it would usually treat the external HD that I use for back up - it's deleted from my files alphabetically (first Apps, then Desktop then Documents and it deleted a couple of entries from my library folder before I quit). Although they aren't there anymore I don't think they've been deleted as nothing went into my trash. It almost seems like the Lacie app. has used a terminal command to 'forget' the files. Anybody got any ideas? I'm set to lose over 6 years worth of files...

    Unfortunately, an rm command will remove without using .Trash. But that seems unlikely.
    Launch Utilities/Terminal and at the prompt, type *ls ~Documents* and see what is there.

  • Desktop Document Folder

    There used to be a place on my desktop with stacking folders for my documents. I somehow removed it or lost it. I know its probably simple but can someone please help me figure out how to bring it back to my desktop?

    There's "three zones" of the Dock, or at least that's what I call it:
    *Zone 1:* The top most icon or left most icon (based on how the Dock location is configured), this is where Finder sits. Secondly, the bottom most icon or the right most icon (again based on Dock location), this is where Trash sits. Finder will always be on your Dock and it'll always be an active application. The same goes for the Trash bin, it however won't have the little active "light" underneath it and may sometimes look like an eject icon based on what's dragged over it. All of the icons on your Dock can be customized, other than Finder & Trash.
    *Zone 2:* Is anything between Finder and the "hash marks" on the Dock. To the left (or top) of those hash marks is where you can store shortcuts to popular applications. The amount of icons here to direct you to favorite applications is up to you.
    *Zone 3:* Is anything between the "hash marks" and the Trash on the Dock. To the right (or bottom) of those hash marks is where you can store folders and minimized application windows. In order to make use of the "stacks" feature you'll need to drag a folder into this zone and then enable the features of Stacks.

    any email or written text that I save in my document folder, I can open it in read mode but I cant edit it?

  • Document file saving confusion using desktop "alias" folder

    I'm having trouble finding files in Snow Leopard. My question is , where are "saved" document files supposed to go?
    I like using a desktop alias folder, but over time I've played around with Time Machine, adding and deleted folders in the Dock, and created three or four different alias folders and basically I've screwed the pooch; there are now non-duplicate folders named "User Name" and "User Name 2"  (plus the  empty "Documents" sub-folder I've heard is a place holder for older software files ?) on the HD and I don't what is where the new files are being saved.
    In any case, I may have two, three or even four sets of partial documents, so I need to do some work moving files around, trashing some and condsolidating the rest into the master Documents file ... but before I go through all that I need to make sure I understand where the OS wants saved files to go.
    Is this path correct ? MS Word > Save > Documents Alias Folder > HD > Users > User Name > Documents.
    If that's correct, then I can go to the various Word 2011  forums and find out how to make sure files are being saved using that path.

    Stuffit's default is to decompress files saved to the desktop.
    Pages documents are actually zipped folders.
    Look in the Stuffit preferences and see if you can turn it off. Or get out of the habit of saving to the desktop, there are better places to organise your work
    I disagree that Stuffit is useless, in fact it really is the swiss army knife of decompression and pays to have it around. Amongst other archive utilities.

  • Keyboard shortcut for the Document Folder in file open/save dialog

    Does anyone know if there exists a keyboard shortcut for Document Folder in the File Save/Open Dialog? <command><shift>O works in the Finder. I tried variations of that in the dialog and didn't find any. <command>D takes you to the desktop. I tried other variations surrounding that to get to the Document Folder and didn't find any.
    Anyone? Bueller?

    Because you are saving it to the desktop, Pages documents are actually zipped files and Stuffit is set to uncompress desktop files.
    Either don't save to the desktop (bad practice) or check the preferences in Stuffit to see if you can turn off unstuff files on desktop.

  • I have added the Documents folder to the Dock, however when I save a document it doesn't appear in the Documents folder on the Dock, only the Documents folder in the Finder.  Is this a quirk, so am I doing something wrong?

    I like having my Documents folder on the Dock so I added the Documents folder from the Finder to the Dock.  When I save a document to the Documents folder, the saved document appears in the Documents folder from the Finder and not in the Documents folder on the Dock.  Why is this happening?  And how can I change this?

  • How do I change the default save location for new files in Pages back from iCloud to my Documents folder?

    I just upgraded OSX to Mountain Lion and Pages to 4.2, and because OSX is syncing with my iCloud account, when I go to save a new file in Pages it defaults to try to save to my iCloud account rather than giving me the folder structure on my hard-drive that I prefer. It requires two extra steps to save to the proper place in my Documents folder on my hard drive.
    Is there a way to reset the default so that when I go to save a new file, the folder structure opens to the last saved folder (like it does in other non-iCloud applications) rather than defaulting to my iCloud, and to do it without just removing documents from my iCloud account entirely?
    I checked the Preferences for both Pages and iCloud and found nothing about this.

    What I meant is turn off Documents and Data in iCloud in OS X. Keep it on on your iOS devices. iCloud will sync documents between the iOS devices and make them available on the iCloud web site, but it won't mess up iWorks' open and save dialog boxes. It also won't assume that you want all your documents in iCloud, which I think is undesirable anyway.
    Keep iOS and OS X separate, and use the web site to move files between the two as necessary.
    iOS iWork is different from OS X iWork. There are fewer fonts on an iOS device. iOS iWork programs have slightly different feature sets than OS X iWork programs, and the file formats are different. iCloud automatically converts the file format when necessary, but if you make a habit of saving things directly to iCloud, you are limited to the lowest common denominator between the two versions of iWorks. So why would anyone want iWork on the Mac to open and save documents on iCloud by default?
    If you want to store files in the cloud and sync them on your Macs, SugarSync is a much better solution. It lets you choose your sync folders, it doesn't make you reorganize your files, it lets you sync all file types, it doesn't convert files to a different format and back, and it stores everything in the cloud, too. Just the simle act of saving a file backs it up and syncs it. I wouldn't live without it. iCloud is best with iTunes purchases and synchronizing Mac settings and iOS files; I woudln't live without it. The two make an unbeatable combination.

  • Documents folder on Desktop and a question about trash

    Hello all. My previous experience has been on Windows PCs, and as a result, I make assumptions and get frustrated on my new Macbook. I was trying to organize some of my files in the Documents folder, and at one point my errant clicking and dragging caused a folder to appear on the desktop for "Documents." Based on my previous experience with Windows, I assumed that folder was a shortcut folder, and because I like my desktop area to be uncluttered and free of icons, I moved it to the trash without thinking anything of it. I continue to organize files in "Documents" under finder as if nothing is amiss. Lo and behold, I go to empty my trash later, and I notice that it is taking some time and says "Deleting 214 of 6517 files" which clues me in to the fact that it is deleting a LOT of things, not just the one or two extraneous short cut icons I thought I had thrown in there. I hit "Stop Emptying Trash" and took a look at the damage. Many of my files in "Documents" got deleted. I moved the "Documents" folder out of the trash and on to the desktop. My questions for anyone kind enough to answer is this:
    1. Is there ANY possible way for me to recover those files? Are they really REALLY gone? If it were Windows, I would know where to look, but because I am new to this OS . . .
    2. What should I have done to remove this darn icon from my desktop? I know its always said that "everything is so intuitive on a mac" but I disagree. Especially when you have moved over from Windows. The contextual menu that comes up when I click on the icon does not allow me to "delete this shortcut." How can I delete this from the desktop but still retain the few files I have remaining?

    By the numbers:
    1. See my "Data Recovery" FAQ for comprehensive advice that may help you with this problem.
    2. Based on what you describe, it sounds like you dragged your Documents folder to the desktop. Generally, the files and folders that appear on one's desktop are actually files and folders within your Home > Desktop folder. By default, your Documents folder is also within your Home folder, at the top level like the Desktop folder, i.e. Home > Documents. You should have moved the Documents folder back to the top level of your Home folder.
    Mac OS X aliases to objects — roughly equivalent to Windows shortcuts to files and folders — are created by dragging an object while holding both the Command and Option keys. See "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Creating an alias." An alias to an object displays a curved arrow in its lower-left corner — a badge — to differentiate itself from the actual object.
    If you merely drag an object from your Home folder to your desktop, it moves that object from its former folder to the desktop, i.e. the Home > Desktop folder: it does not create an alias to that object unless you also hold Command-Option while dragging.

  • How do I get My Documents folder back on desktop?

    When I got the new MBP My Documents folder was at the bottom with rest of programs. Not sure what I did but somehow sent it away. How can I get it back on my desktop instead of having to go into HD every time I want to pull a file? Thanks.

    another method to have convenient access to the Documents folder is to drag the folder into the Dock. this will create a shortcut, and all you have to do is click the dock shortcut, and it'll bring you to Documents

  • Word 2013 shows full UNC path instead of local "Documents" folder on file Open and Save

    Normally Word (and Excel) by default will show the user's local "Documents" folder when opening or saving a file. That is what we want. However, after using Windows Server Folder Redirection to redirect the Documents folder to the network (Windows
    Server 2012R2), Word now shows the full UNC path to the network share.
    Instead of seeing:
    "MyPC  Documents"
    users see
    \\sever1\redirect$\username\documents
    Folder redirection is supposed to be transparent to the user. Virtually all our other applications, including Office 2003, respect this convention and continue to show "Documents". As you can see, Word even exposes a hidden share.
    Even if we go to File / Options / Save and browse to the local Documents folder as the place Word should open and save files from, Word immediately removes the path you have browsed to, and replaces it with the UNC path.
    Is there a way to suppress this behavior? Thanx!

    Hi,
    Based on my understanding, you only want others to see some part of path name, rather than full UNC path name. It is right?
    It seems that we can’t implement your requirement. When we open a file from “My Pictures”, it shows “My picture” instead of showing the full path “C:\Users\User\Pictures”. “My Picture” is set as a library in Windows, so it hides
    full path by design. We can't set \\sever1\redirect$\username\documents as a library.
    As a workaround, you can upload these files to OneDrive and share link to others.

    By default,  " - Copy" (in your UI language) will be appended to the original file name.  You can change the file name to something else, if you'd like.

    I found several discusssions around this subject, but none with a bugfix / solution. It´d be nice if someone could point me to the solution if there indeed is one.
    Here´s the deal: I generate bills from my database as a pdf. Some customers want the pdf per email as well as the paper version.
    So my workflow generating several bills one after another, is this
    -- hit command-p for the first bill, the pdf - document appears in a preview window
    -- hit command-shift-s "save as"
    -- select my bills folder (several levels deep tucked away), give a unique file name
    -- hit Enter to save the pdf
    -- hit enter to print the document.
    so far so good, that works as flawless under 10.5 as under 10.4.
    next bill:
    -- hit command-p for the 2nd bill, the pdf - document appears in a preview window
    -- hit command-shift-s "save as"
    -- * under 10.4: my bills folder is already preselected; click on one of the other bills to get an almost correct filename, adjust filename and Enter, Enter, ready, next bill
    -- * under 10.5: documents folder is preselcted (***?) -- select my bills folder *(i.e. click on my_user > commercial docs > bills > client xyz > july 2008* > click on one of the other bills to get an almost correct filename, adjust filename and Enter, Enter, ready, next bill
    This getting away from the keyboard using the mouse (yeah I know, I still could use the keyboard, but that´s nonetheless manymany key presses) to navigate 5 levels deep to a folder really costs time and gets on my nerves...
    any idea (and I really don´t want to buy $35 default folder for a job, that worked flawlessly under 10.4)??
    I have no problem opening a plist file and do some editing; any other idea would be greatly appreciated...

    I shied away all this time from automator, simply because I´m lazy as ****
    After having looked into it for all of 2 seconds, one questions. - It looks as if Automator manipulates a file that is already on disk.
    That document, which I have open in preview, is "not yet" a file. It has been generated by my DB and sent to preview, but there´s no file on disk. - Don´t know if I explain myself correctly.
    No idea how to manipulate this "entity", or make it do anything with automator.
