DISAPPEARING VOLUMES

Something extremely weird is going on...
I recently lost an entire iphoto library... vanished....
I searched with spotlight for the library file name but could only find an AlbumData file - not the library file itself. I then revealed the AlbumData file in the finder to see where it was and discovered it was inside a "volume" on my internal hard drive that I had no idea existed.
When I had a dig around this "volume" - lone and behold I found the iphoto library and quickly plugged in an external drive and copied it straight across to make sure I always knew where it was.
Now that copying was done I wanted to look at what else was in that "volume" but then it was nowhere to be seen - nor are any of the other "volumes" that appeared alongside this one anywhere to be found.
These phantom "volumes" appeared in a VOLUMES folder which sat right under under the USERS folder in the Macintosh HD column in the finder. But now the VOLUMES folder doesn't show at all and I can't find it anywhere.
I even checked that iphoto library I found and copied because I thought maybe I had imagined the whole thing but it is there.... but I have no idea where the original is..... and can't find it... where did I copy it from?
What is extra weird is that the names of these phantom "volumes" were the same as two external drives I use to backup using Memeo Life Agent (MAXTOR, MAXTOR 1, MAXTOR 2, etc).
And also, suddenly, this programme will not back up files in the way it did.... When I add folders and files into my drive that is to be backed up, the Memeo software says the backup is complete when it has not copied the new files and folders to the target disk....
Not sure what I am asking really except I have NO idea what is going on.... I have all my data now so I am not worried but really want to avoid losing libraries again and then taking ages to somehow stumble across them in phantom volumes...
If anyone can throw light on this... please let me know

First off, the Volumes folder is supposed to be invisible in the Finder, but you can open it easily, just go to the "Go" menu item in the Finder, and select the "Go to Folder..." option. Then type this in the dialog window:
/Volumes
and hit the GO button. The Volumes folder will open. What is SUPPOSED to be in there are aliases to all mounted drives/partitions (which are called Volumes). If you use backup software and the drive/partition that the software is supposed to be using is unmounted, then the software will create and actual folder inside of /Volumes and backup to that. In short, it will backup to your startup drive.
Evidently your backup software ran into this problem of being unable to write to its assigned drive because the drive was not mounted, and created a folder with the name of the drive and proceeded to back up there instead.
So make sure that your backup program is not running, open /Volumes, and remove everything that is NOT an alias. You can then do whatever you want with the folders and their data--copy them to where they ought to go or trash them if you already have copies. And from now on make sure that the backup drives are mounted when your software is scheduled to run.

  • How do I fix these problems with my iPhone 4S?

Okay, so I recently purchased a LifeProof case for iPhone 4S to take underwater photos and videos. Upon my third or fourth submersion, I discovered that water (very small amounts) had entered the case via the dock connecter area. I immediately removed the phone from water, dried it off and left it for about an hour. I (incorrectly) thought that my phone was completely dry and made the huge mistake of charging my phone. I returned an hour later to a funny smell and a very unhappy iPhone.
My current problems include a malfunctioning home button (activating siri on it's own and being unresponsive most of the time), a disappearing volume bar in music, youtube etc. (no volume without using a dock) and charging problems (doesn't charge from time to time). All of these problems seem to affect each other and we can go ahead and assume it's as a result of water damage.
I will be working out some way to get these issues professionally repaired (some clues as to where to go  would be lovely), but I can't see to that for at least a week and a half. Are there any temporary (or permanent for that matter) fixes that i can do relatively easily? (not jailbroken)

The only possible fix was turning the phone off immediately and burying it in a bag of dry rice for a week at least. That might...just might...have worked.  But you're way beyond that and I see no fixes.  In fact the phone is probably going to get more problems before finally gving up the ghost.  Continued use is just shorting out more and more of the circuitry.  For that reason I don't think repair is much of an option. Go to an Apple Store and buy an out-of-warranty replacement.

  • HT201210 How can I restore my iPhone? - server seems permanently unavailable

I cannot restore my iPhone to get rid of a software bug (disappearing volume control that also affects alert sounds and softphone usage).
Every time I try to use iTunes to do a restore it just says that the update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable......for 6 weeks???
I have followed the guidelines - 2009 iMac  / latest OSX 10.8.4 / latest iTunes 11.0.4 / logged in as administrator / firewall turned off  / net connection seems perfect in every other respect.
Any ideas out there please? I am stuck - any help would be massively appreciated.

Thank you but I am a little out of my depth technically so please forgive me if my response here is not logical (i.e.dumb). I have done a search on the hard drive for gs.apple.com and come up with just the following file. I am afraid I don't know what to do from here but am hoping this means more to you.

Thanks for your solution, it wasn't quite what solved the problem but i remembered that i had a bit of salt water on my phone recently and spraying the charging port with an anti-oxide spray solved my problem, do you mind if i ask, how is the charging port related with the volume or/and speakers?

So even if I just ask to pay them to replace the lock button they won't because my screens are third-party?
Apple does not repair devices beyond replacing the screen on some models or a battery replacement.  They replace the ENTIRE device.
For the Out of Warranty replacement cost, you could have gotten a fully functional replacement device.  Instead you chose to spend less to get only the screen replaced and continue to live with additional issues.
Apple will not touch the device now.  They will know that it was opened elsewhere and that the replacement screen is not original.

  • Ipod Touch Version 3.1.3 volume bar disappeared and will not return

The volume bar on my 1st generation iOS 3.1.3 ipod touch started disappearing then would return with tweeking of the headphones and sometimes when resetting all settings. Now it is gone completely and won't come back.
I have tried resetting to factory settings.
Cleaning the jack with a clean dry toothbrush.
    Any ideas???
I thought I would try getting help here before going to the apple store.

From your description it appears that the headphone jack is bad. You can make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store to hear what they have to say.
If Apple can't clean out the jack, they will exchange it for this price.

Likely not worth it for a 1G iPod. Thee a thrid-party place that is less expensive.

  • PLEASE HELP!!! My Macintosh HD volume disappeared

    Ok, here's the deal...
I have a Powerbook 15" and I was trying to get it to recognize an HP printer because for some reason it didn't find the device.
So I wrote HP and they gave me some instructions wich I decided to follow (huge mistake!).
They included getting rid of some Preferences, some Caches and other things, and then to run the DISK UTILITY and do a REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS.
I did all that but while in the Repair Disk Permissionas the computer froze for over an hour, so I performed a hard reset.
When the computer started again it didn´t find a Start up Volume.
I then started from the Tiger Installation CD, ran the Disk Utility from there...
and what is my surprise when I see that my hardrive appear but not my Macintosh HD Volume.
    So...
I can´t do any repairing because the volume is not there
I can´t do a FireWire Transfer of Files because there´s no volume to connect
I can´t even Install again the System because there´s no destination volume
    PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP!!!!
    I´m desperate
    Thanks in advance to all,
    n.

Hi naxpal and welcome to Apple Discussions,
As I was reading through your post I was noticing that I also had a problem similar to that about a month ago. The only thing different is that my Macintosh HD was there (where the OS was installed), but my second partition volume disappeared. I was wondering when it happened if my data was gone for ever, but it took me a few days to figure out what to do:
    1) In your case, start up from your Tiger Installation CD.
    2) Open Disk Utility and look in the list on the left for Macintosh HD.
    3) If it is in the list, select it, and click Mount.
    4) Quit Disk Utility.
    5) Restart your PowerBook G4 holding the option key.
    6) If Macintosh HD is available, select it and press the arrow on the right.
    7) If you got to this step, you are all set and all you have to do is eject your Tiger Installation CD.
    I hope this helps you.

  • The sound effects volume is all the way down. It pops on for a second, then disappears. I can't find it in settings.   How do I get the sound back?

The sound effects volume is all the way down.  It pops up for a second once in awhile and then disappears. I can't find it in the Setting.  Music sound plays fine, but no sound on my apps.  Any idea how to fix it?

If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • Music volume control disappeared after updating to 5.0.1.  Tried reseting but won't work, completely silent!

I upgraded my Iphone 4OS to 5.0.1 this morning and now the volume control has disappeared from the music.  The phone is totally silent apart from when incoming calls are made.  No alert noises either.  Tried restoring to original settings but this hasn't worked.  Any advice? HELP!

I have the same issue but just since today, i don't understand...

  • THE VOLUME CONTROL ICON DISAPPEARED. HOW DO I GET IT BACK?

Volume control icon at the bottom of my screen has disappeared.  How do I get it back?

Volume control icon at the bottom of my screen has disappeared.  How do I get it back?

  • My volume adjuster disappeared. How do I get it back?

Today I tried listening to music on my iPhone 4S, only to find that my volume adjuster had disappeared. And just to clarify, when I say that it disappeared, I mean that when I press the volume buttons on my phone, I see the speaker icon but the gauge bar is gone. I tried to test if this issue was only happening in one place, by checking out if I could adjust my volume through my YouTube app. Unforuntately, the volume slider has disappeared from the app as well.
I tested my alarms, etc. and the problem is not my speakers -- my phone is still fully functional in this regard.
I can't figure out what I did to cause this change, but I would love any advice you have on how to fix my phone. If it makes any difference, I have already tried restarting it several times.
Thank you in advance for all of your help and advice.

I am also having the same problem as described, but with a slight difference: The sound works fine on my iPhone 4S (running iOS 5.1), can adjust volume, sound is on w/ video apps, youtube, music... then when I plug it into my charger--poof! Sound cuts out... and this is with my ringer on. I don't even get the button clicks or the lock sound when the phone's put to sleep.
I've tried everything: cleaning out charger port/headphone jack, turning phone off and back on, rebooting phone, even restoring phone to factory settings... nothing worked. I'm thinking maybe iOS 5.1 has a bug that's causing this on 4S phones... any way you can fix this? This never happened with my 3GS--it was running iOS 5.1, but I was able to get sound and volume control, even when plugged into the charger, ringer on or off.
Hoping someone from Apple tech support is reading this so they can work on a bug fix asap... this is just ridiculous!

  • The volume slide control on my 4s has disappeared when I watch videos and listen to music. Any suggestion on how to get it back? I've tried the recommendations in the manual

The volume slide control on my iPhone 4S has disappeared when I play videos, music and YouTube. I've tried the recommendations in manual, to no avail. Any suggestions?

Your phone still thinks it is plugged into the stereo. I don't remember how to solve this but perhaps you can search through the forum or maybe one of the members here will jump in on how to switch the playback to speakers.

  • Cluster Shared Volume disappeared after taking the volume offline for Validation Tests.

    Hi,
After an unknown issue with one of our Hyper-V 4 Node cluster running on Server 2008 R2 SP1 with fibre channel NEC D3-10 SAN Storage all our cluster shared volumes were in redirecting mode and I was unable to get them back online. Only after rebooting all
the nodes one by one the disks came back online. Eventlog messages indicated that I had to test my cluster validation. After shutting down all the virtual machines I set all the cluster shared volumes offline and started the complete validation test. The following
    warnings/errors appeared during the test.
An error occurred while executing the test.
    An error occurred retrieving the
disk information for the resource 'VSC2_DATA_H'.
Element not found (Validate Volume Consistency Test)
Cluster disk 4 is a Microsoft MPIO based disk
Cluster disk 4 from node has 4 usable path(s) to storage target
Cluster disk 4 from node has 4 usable path(s) to storage target
Cluster disk 4 is not managed by Microsoft MPIO from node
Cluster disk 4 is not managed by Microsoft MPIO from node (Validate Microsoft MPIO-based disks test)
SCSI page 83h VPD descriptors for cluster disk 4 and 5 match (Validate SCSI device Vital Product Data (VPD) test)
After the test the cluster shared volume was disappeared (the resource is online).
    Cluster events that are logged
Cluster physical disk resource 'DATA_H' cannot be brought online because the associated disk could not be found. The expected signature of the disk was '{d6e6a1e0-161e-4fe2-9ca0-998dc89a6f25}'. If the disk was replaced or restored, in the Failover Cluster
Manager snap-in, you can use the Repair function (in the properties sheet for the disk) to repair the new or restored disk. If the disk will not be replaced, delete the associated disk resource. (Event 1034)
Cluster disk resource found the disk identifier to be stale. This may be expected if a restore operation was just performed or if this cluster uses replicated storage. The DiskSignature or DiskUniqueIds property for the disk resource has been corrected.
    (Event 1568)
In disk management the disk is unallocated, unknown, Reserved. When the resource is on one node and i open disk management i get the warning that i have to initialize the disk. I did not do this yet.
Reading from other posts i think that the partition table got corrupted but i have no idea how to get it back. I found the following information but it's not enough for me to go ahead with: Using a tool like TestDisk to rewrite the partition table. then
rewriting the uniqueID to the disk brought everything back. But still no explaination as to why we had our "High Availability" Fail Over cluster down for nearly 2 Days. This happened to us twice within the past week.
Anybody that an idea how to solve this? I think my data is still intact.
Thanx for taking the time to read this.
    DJITS.

    Hi,
Error information you provided indicate disk connection failure issue, please confirm shared disk 4 is available:
To review hardware, connections, and configuration of a disk in cluster storage:
On each node in the cluster, open Disk Management (which is in Server Manager under Storage) and see if the disk is visible from one of the nodes (it should be visible from one node but not multiple nodes). If it is visible to
a node, continue to the next step. If it is not visible from any node, still in Disk Management on a node, right-click any volume, click Properties, and then click the Hardware tab. Click the listed disks or LUNs to see if all expected disks or LUNs appear.
If they do not, check cables, multi-path software, and the storage device, and correct any issues that are preventing one or more disks or LUNs from appearing. If this corrects the overall problem, skip all the remaining steps and procedures.
Review the event log for any events that indicate problems with the disk. If an event provides information about the disk signature expected by the cluster, save this information and skip to the last step in this procedure.
To open the failover cluster snap-in, click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Failover Cluster Management. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and
    then click Continue.
In the Failover Cluster Management snap-in, if the cluster you want to manage is not displayed, in the console tree, right-click Failover Cluster Management, click Manage a Cluster, and then select or specify the cluster that
    you want.
If the console tree is collapsed, expand the tree under the cluster you want to manage, and then click Storage.
In the center pane, find the disk resource whose configuration you want to check, and record the exact name of the resource for use in a later step.
Click Start, point to All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
    Type:
    CLUSTER RESOURCE DiskResourceName /PRIV >path\filename.TXT
For DiskResourceName, type the name of the disk resource, and for path\filename, type a path and a new filename of your choosing.
Locate the file you created in the previous step and open it. For a master boot record (MBR) disk, look in the file for DiskSignature. For a GPT disk, look in the file for DiskIdGuid.
Use the software for your storage to determine whether the signature of the disk matches either the DiskSignature or DiskIdGuid for the disk resource. If it does not, use the following procedure to repair the disk configuration.

  • The volume icon on my ipod won't disappear and the volume sets itself at full.

The volume icon on my ipod touch won't disappear and the volume sets itself at full. I have tried a master reset etc, but it doesn't want to cooperate. Any ideas?

    Try:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod
If you still have a problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
I do not know what a "master reset" is.
