Disk full.  Will not reboot

While exporting a large number of pictures from iPhoto on an external drive to a folder on my desktop, my system froze. I think it ran out of disk space. I had to manually power off. When I rebooted, I got only a grey screen with a tiny finder window/question mark in the middle of the screen. I booted from CD and have run disk utility, but it sits for a very long time 30 min+ 'getting disk information'. I have tried this several times. I was thinking of reinstalling the OS, but when I go to the install option, there is no HD displayed to install to. I went into terminal window after booting from CD and found that /.vol and both /dev were at 100% - not good I'm sure. It will not boot into Safe Mode. Any suggestions where to go from here?
17 " G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I am embarrased to say, I do not have a backup of HD.
I have an external drive where I keep all my
pictures. If I have to reformat, the only important
thing I will loose is iTunes. Can I replace the
drive with a new one, place the old internal drive
in an enclosure and reattach is to retrieve data?
Maybe. It all depends on exactly what is damaged with the drive. If you do that Prosoft's Data Rescue available at http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php is the best tool. You can download a demo copy to find out what it will be able to recover. If you want to actually do the recovery then you must pay for a license.
Is it possible DiskWarrior is sitting too long
between the time it completes the rebuild and I
start the replace? I have been running the rebuild
overnight so I think it may be sitting 'idle' for
several hours.
I never heard of a problem like that with DiskWarrior. I have been called away and left it sit for hours waiting for me to return. When I answered the request to replace the directory, it did.
The system also attempted to
'logout'. Could the firewire connection go
inactive? I have corrected the logout issue and
plan to try again.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Retina will not reboot in Yosemite

I have a brand new -- the newest model -- MacBook Pro 13 in. Retina that was doing well with Mavericks.  After having Yosemite installed it froze up when the top was closed, and now it will not reboot.
I tried holding the power button down for several seconds and then pressing the power button again, just long enough to get the start-up gong. Tried this three or four times.  Each time the reboot stops when the progress bar on the screen, under the Apple logo, reaches just less than half way.  Then nothing. Letting the machine sit for long periods while it works out its own problems does not help. No progress toward rebooting.
I have tried rebooting with and without the power cable attached.

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
To restart an unresponsive computer, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If a desktop Mac hangs at a plain gray screen with a movable cursor, the keyboard may not be recognized. Press and hold the button on the side of an Apple wireless keyboard to make it discoverable. If need be, replace or recharge the batteries. If you're using a USB keyboard connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

How do I eject a dvd disk that will not eject after I have highlighted it and clicked the eject disk in finder file menu?

    Complements of Kappy:
    Try:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
    /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • My Mac desktop will not reboot?

I shut down my iMac and it will not reboot correctly.  I power it on and it will sit for hours with the apple logo in the middle of the screen with the small rotating circle underneath which makes it look like it is thinking.

    Hello,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • After updating from Lion 10.7.4 to 10.7.5, my MacBook Pro will not reboot.  Why?  What can I do about it?

After upating from Lion 10.7.4 to 10.7.5, my MacBook Pro will not reboot.  Why?  What can I do about it?

I ended up having to visit an Apple Store.  They claimed that the update must have aggravated an already corrupted hard disk drive.  The solution was to wipe my hard disk (fortunately I had recently backed up on Time Machine).  The "Genius" also claimed this was the first time he had come across the problem.  Although he was clearly able to diagnose it straightaway, and the next person he saw had exactly the same problem with his Mac, and I saw an awful lot of customers queuing up with their Macs and iMacs looking very suspiciously like they all had the same problem!  So clearly Apple know what the problem is but as usual treat customers as if they're idiots in order to cover up the problem.  But at least the problem is now solved (although having to take at trip out and wait in a queue at an Apple store, and then restoring from backups is a painstaking inconvenience I could well have done without).  All I can suggest is that you might as well take it in.  None of the "solutions" on the Forum are remotely on the ball, and all Apple "Geniuses" have clearly been told what the problem is and how to fix it.  Good luck!

  • Mac mini G4 will not reboot after Onyx upgrade

DURING UPGRADE OF ONYX INSTRUCTED TO RUN REPAIR DISK FROM MAC OSX INSTALL DISK. SYSTEM WILL NOT REBOOT. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Have you booted from the OSX install disc yet?
With the power on, insert this disc, then force the computer to turn off by holding down the power button for 5-10 seconds.
Then restart the computer. As soon as you hear the startup chime, hold down the C key -- and keep holding it until you see the "gear" spinning on the screen.
You need a wired keyboard to do this. If you don't have one, borrow a usb PC keyboard.
Once you boot from the install disc, don't install! But instead run DiskUtility from the Utility menu at the top of the screen.
BTW if DiskUtility can't repair the hard drive, you might have better luck with DiskWarrior -- though it will cost about $100 to find out.

  • Macbook will not reboot

Macbook will not reboot, I have tried recomendations from forums, I am conected to an Imac via firewire cable to see if I can reboot from the Imac optical drive with the install disk, Nothimg seems to work, I keep getting the beach ball.

You need to be more specific than "I have tried recommendations from forums".
First, which MacBook do you have running what operating system?
What happens when you try a normal boot?  Do you hear anything? See any video?
What happens when you try a safe boot, by holding the shift key down when you boot?
What happens when you boot to your OS X DVD in your system, by holding the C key down when you boot? If you're able to do this, what happens when you run Disk Utility on your hard drive?
Are you able to run the Apple hardware test?
Since you have a firewire connection to an iMac, when you go into target disk mode (boot holding T key down) do you see anything on the MacBook screen? Can you see the MacBook's hard drive on the iMac?

  • My macbook will not reboot?

I had to force shut down my macbook and now it will not reboot. After the login window I get a grey screen with the spinning gear and nothing else happens. I have tried to start in safe-mode to no avail. I restarted with Command R and have tried Disk repair, restore to a previous version and reload OSX, nothing has work. The only thing I can do is get to the Safari window to use the internet. Please help before I purchase another computer. Computer skills and patience at a very low level. Thanks.

Is your MacBook older, say pre-mid-2011 or newer? Or put another way, did it come with OS X 10.7 Lion or OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion?
When you boot to the recovery partition, and bring up Disk Utility, when you clicked the first aid tab and Repair Disk, did you do that on the volume and/or the partition? The volume would be the left-most entry, with the partition indented below that. You can repair both. Did you try repairing both?
It's too early to say that the hard drive has unrecoverable issues. Typically, when there are hard drive issues that Disk Utility can't repair, the next step is Disk Warrior (assuming there's not an obvious hardware issue).  Some use TechTool Pro, but Disk Warrior has been the greater tool of choice for disk repairs.
If you can, it would be good to run the Apple Hardware Test. If your MacBook came with OS X 10.6 or prior, you have the original OS X disk to run the hardware test (the disk that says in small print on the label 'AHT Version x.x' is the one to use).  If your MacBook came with Lion/Mtn Lion, you didn't get any DVD's, and should follow the steps in the Apple note.  If you're able to run this, it will help determine whether there is a hardware issue with the hard drive. If not, then Disk Warrior can likely fix the drive. The hardware test can take over an hour, depending on how much memory you have installed.

  • Disk Utility Will Not Open

Disk Utility will not open. It will start but closes immediately. Removed com.apple.Diskutility.plist from user preference folder. Still will not open. Selected try again when that dialog box showed up. Rebooted. Same results.
Rebooted from external source and ran Disk Utility.
Apparently, something is missing in one of the libraries.
    Need help.

Does it light up at all? If not, you could have a battery issue.

  • Disk Images will not mount and Disk Utility will not runru

I am having some major problems with Disk Utility, Disk Images, and software update. First, Disk utility will not open or run. When I double-click the application icon, nothing happens, no message, nothing. I am running OSX 10.4.11. I have deleted diskutility prefs. I am able to run Disk Utility from the Startup DVD of Tiger. On first run, it verified and repaired permissions. I run verify and repair permissions several more times from Startup DVD and everything is fine. But Disk Utility on my startup HD will not work. Similary, NONE of my disk images will mount. No matter what Disk Image i try to mount, nothing will. And I cannot use Disk utility to mount them! So, no matter what I download, no images will mount. And thirdly, when I try to run software update, it will not work. I do get a message: it says, "Could not load Software Update." Finally, i tried to download Onyx to delete log files, etc.. but again, the disk image will not mount. I was able to install a dashboard widget called "maintidget" and was successful in running the daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance tasks. Can anyone help? Everything else works fine!!! All apps! Safari, Mail, iTunes, MS Office, everything works fine. Thanks for ANY help!

Previously, I had run verify permissions, repair permissions multiple times(from startup DVD) - no probems found. Deleted disk utility prefs. Run the maintenance taskes (daily, weekly, monthly). Nothing worked. But, I forget to check the drive for problems. So I ran disk scan. It found "invalid node" and repair disk could not do it. So, do I erase and do a fresh install or get DiskWarrior? I am running Leopard so I do not have Time Machine but I have backed up my documents, iTunes Library, iPhoto Library, etc... Another thing I found out the hardway is to sync all your bookmarks, mail settings and messages, etc... with .mac if you have an account. Any more suggetions?

  • I purchased the Logitech F310 game controller for my 2011 MacBook Pro. How do I get the driver installed for it. The Disk that came with the controller is a mini disk and will not insert into my laptop.

I purchased the Logitech F310 game controller for my 2011 MacBook Pro. How do I get the driver installed for it. The Disk that came with the controller is a mini disk and will not insert into my laptop.

May not make a difference anyway. The Logitech support site does not show drivers for Mac OS for the F310:
    http://www.logitech.com/en-us/support/gamepad-f310?crid=411
I'd contact their support to find out if there is a Mac driver available, and if they can either give you a web link to get it, e-mail you the software, or snail-mail you a standard-size disk with the drivers.

  • After 10.6.5 update my mac will not reboot

After 10.6.5 update my mac will not reboot. It just spins at the white apple screen. Luckily boot camp works but, all of my important stuff is on the mac side. What can I do? I did not backup(I know that was bad), can I get my old settings and files back? What do I do?

Try sig's suggestion first, then, if that doesn't fix it, try some of the fixes here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2653184&tstart=0
Some of them won't be relevant if you can't even boot, of course.
