Disk image no longer loading...

have a disc image on a ext. drive, whilst watching a video the firewire cable popped out and lost the connection to the ext. drive. Now when ever i try and load the image, the following message pops up...
'The following disk images failed to mount,
No mountable file systems.'
any suggestions on getting in back? have tried running 'repair' using the first aid facility on disc utility...

I really think you're out of luck.
There's one tiny chance I can think of... there used to be some 3rd party APP that allowed you to mount disk images without the checking of them, it really speeded up mounting them, but it's been to long to remember what it was.
Might try searching on MacUpdate or Version Tracker.
You can do this with Disk Utility. Open the preferences and look under the mounting tab for options. Don't forget to reset the preferences when you're done.
I believe that Data Rescue may be able to help if the image was neither compressed nor encrypted. The demo would tell you whether it could or not.

  • IDVD Disk Image - How long does it take?

    Hi,
I exported my iMovie to iDVD, added the necessary effects and am now trying to save it as a disk image for ripping out DVDs later. How long does the "Save as Disk Image" process normally take? Mine has been at it for over 2 hours now. It seems to be stuck in the "Process Menus" stage and says "Rendering menu video asset...". Last time it got stuck at this same place , so I cancelled it and rebooted the machine. Now it seems to be stuck again at the same place. Any ideas how long this typically takes?
    Thanks.

depending on processor (G4, 5, quad, dualcore, Intel), MHz/GHz, size of RAM, speed of hd … you have to calculate between realtime and 10x length of project.... (1h project=10h rendering)
reading in your specs "macbook": make sure, 10 - 20 GB are free on internal drive to make iDVD working smooth..........

  • Encrypted disk image no longer demands password

Some time ago I created an encrypted disk image for storing sensitive data. It has been working fine for months, everytime I clicked on it it demanded that I enter the password before it mounted. But suddenly yesterday it stopped demanding he password and would just mount upon clicking. Tried restart, no change. Tried repairing the disk permisssions, no change. In the meantime, I have created a new encrypted disk, moved all the info to that, and secure-trashed the old one. But this gives me pause for thought. Not terribly secure! Anybody know what might have happened? How can an encrypted disk suddenly become unencrypted?

No, there's no other explanation, unless someone tampered with your account. Launch the Keychain Access application and look for a password item in your login keychain with the name of the image file.

  • Disk Images do not mount - Update to Lion on New MacBook Pro

    Hi,
Just got my new MacBook Pro 2011 13 inch higher spec with 750GB hard drive today. Updated immediately to OS X lion via the up to date programme for free. Am in the process of restoring my applications that I had on my old computer that are on my external hard drive, however the .dmg disk images will not load properly. They go through the regular process of verifying then mounting the disk image, then the image appears for a split second on my desktop before disappearing again.
This happens even if i copy the disk image off of my external hard drive to my macintosh HD and try to mount from there.
This is really really scaring me as if I can't load all my old applications my new computer is absolutely useless. Please please could someone tell me what is going on!?!?!??!?!
    Many thanks in advance,
    Sam

Woke up this morning and tried again and now they all mount fine... Don't know how this happened but the only things I have done differently are trying to mount a dmg that was on my old computer over the network, and it mounted fine, then mounted other dmgs that were previously not working, and they are all fine too. I'm halfway through downloading software updates but all its done so far is download updates for iweb and itunes, and they haven't started running yet anyway.
    With love from,
    Confused.

  • Can I put Network Users on a sparse bundle disk image?

Hello! Can anyone out there help me figure out what seems to be a rather complicated feat?  I'm trying to get users to log in to client iMacs as if they were local accounts, but the user account information is stored on a sparse bundle disk image.
Long story short, I've currently got OS X Server running network user accounts tied to Active Directory.  When the users log in, they have a sparse bundle disk image that automatically mounts on their desktop.  This has been an effective solution for some of our software that doesn't play well with Network storage, as the sparse bundle is treated like local storage by the Macs.
However, what would be a much better solution for us is to actually have the whole user account stored on the disk image.  It's a little like the way FileVault 1 worked, except the disk image is actually stored on a network drive.  So far, as a proof-of-concept, I've been able to make this work manually: I've had to log in to a local admin user and then mount the user's sparse bundle with all their user folder contents contained within.  Then, once the user path is changed to point to the disk image, the user logs right in, everything works exactly as expected (once I got the permissions set correctly).  This method works exactly like a Network User account except that all the applications see it as local storage instead of network storage.
The trick, though, is automating this process.  I want a user to sit down in front of any iMac, log in and go straight to their account.  It would be nice if OS X Server was able to accommodate this with a setting, but it doesn't.  So, my plan so far has been to create a generic local account with a script on the desktop that users can open to login in.  The script would then mount the network share, then mount the sparse bundle disk image, then log the user in to their "local" account on the iMac.  When they log out, there's a login hook that restarts the machine.
So far, I'm stumbling over the fact that the sparse bundle unmount when logging out of the generic "login" account, preventing the user from logging in.  But if I leave the generic account logged in, then the loginhook to restart the computer doesn't work.
Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

IIRC, sparse images only grow as things are added, but do not shrink. Create a new one, mount the original, transfer your stuff from the original into the new one, and delete the original one.

  • How to backup a mounted & encrypted disk image?

I have read all the posts about creating a sparse bundles. I guess this allows you to backup the disk image as long as it is not mounted? Will it still backup if it is mounted? Will it be usable when I restore it?
What if all I want to do is just backup the mounted disk and not the image? I did some tests and it seems to work. When I look at the backup on a different machine by taking over the disk, I see the volume as a possible restore and I see the files. Am I missing something? I thought I had read that this does not work? I do realize that the backup is not very secure since I can now restore files on an image I had intended to maintain secure. It would be nice if time machine allowed me to backup in an encrypted format the required some password for the restore. Create sparse bundle on that backup disk and backup to that mounted image?
    Steven

Well since it is encrypted, no matter how you delete it, it should remain secure. That is an advantage of an encrypted file
However, if you want to over write the contents of the file, you can just drag it to the trash and select secure empty trash.
NOTE: if you have a lot of other deleted files in the trash, it is going to take longer to do the secure empty trash as those other files are also going to be securely erased. I've made the mistake of doing the secure empty trash with several hundred files in the trash, some of which were rather large files.

I tried repairing the disk image from within the Finder. Install disc? You mean the boot DVD? As far as I understand the finder cant be loaded in OSX from a boot CD, like it could be done in OS 9 and earlier.
I do have Tech Tools Pro, perhaps I need to use it, as I do not want to create a new disc image from that CD.
They no longer make Street Atlas for the Mac, so I need classic to run that CD. Its really useful for those that are traveling and without Internet access, and for those that want very detailed maps that MapQuest, Google, or whatever usually cant provide.
Okay should I try repairing the disk with Tech Tools Pro?

  • Running Win7 and ITunes 10.6 - loaded all my old CD's in one user acct. I want to share these with all other users on the machine without reloading the CD's and without having to make copies of their disk images, if possible. Also, want them on my WinXP

Running ITunes 10.6, on a Win7 Home Premium SP1. Just loaded about thirty of my favorite CD's on my user account.
I would like to be able to make all of them available to my other family members in their accounts on my machine, without needing to reload them all and without having to store their disk images multiple times. Can this be done, and if so, how?
And can I copy the contents of a folder across to my wife's WinXP SP3 machine, and have them made available to each of us in our login accts on that machine?
(There are three of us, plus an admin and a backup admin account, on each.)
I will be really grateful if someone can help me do this for my family members, as we have shared the music on these CD's over the years, and I would like to make them available on the desktop for each of us.
Also, I'd like to be able to load them, or a subset of them, to my wife and son's IPods. Any Tips, Traps or Tweaks for that process, as well?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Not sure about the OS level for the IPods. I am doing this for my wife and son, using an account here created for my son, which he shares with me for support purposes. But I do know they both have IPods, and our PC's and their OS's were described above.

You can move the iTunes folder to a separate drive on your pc an then configure each account to use this drive / folder as iTunes library ... The problem is, that iTunes by default stores everything in your personal music folder which is separate for each user account in windows (and by default is on "C" drive).
I create a separate partition on every pc/laptop (and map a drive name) where I store music, videos and other mass data. This will also keep the "C" drive small, which is backed up from time to time and so my backup is also small.

  • Disk Utility taking long time to open directory with disk images

    Hi and thanks in advance.
I have a couple of CD and DVD disk images stored in a folder (and organized into several sub-folders) on a FAT32 volume.
The problem is that recently, Disk Utility takes forever to display the content of any of these folders when I select Open Disk Image from the File menu. The Select an Image to Attach dialog remains empty and the beach ball spins. After a very long time (10-15minutes? I've never had the patience to time it.), the contents will display, if at all. During this period of virtual inactivity, the program is unresponsive.
Since the FAT32 volume is also accessible from my Bootcamped Windows XP OS, I tried doing a disk check and a defragment but it hasn't improved my problem.
    Any ideas?

    HI,
Make sure your MacBookPro has sufficient free disk space to read the disk images.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.

  • Can't load disk image when doing first backup

    Hi
I've had to erase my Time Capsule's Time Machine sparesebundle as it had a corruption. And now I am trying to do a first backup again.
Unfortunately, I keep getting an error message telling me the machine can't create a disk image; I have no idea why. I have tried changing my computer name in case that makes a difference (but I don't see why as the previous name worked fine for a year or more).
Since trying to start this new process, I have noticed that sometimes in the TM preference pane that the TC name is given a Time Capsule-1 as opposed to its normal name of Time Capsule.
Below is the log captured from the TM widget.

I tried to start the backup again, after logging out and back in again (as I had done several times before), but this time the sparsebundle loaded ok and the backup started properly.
So there's no need for anyone to spend any time on me.

  • TS3212 After downloading, I get this message: preparing disk image. How long does this take?

I'm trying to download the latest version of iTunes, ITunes 10.7.dmg, on my Mac OSX 10.6.6. The update is stuck and the only message I read is "Preparing the disk image". What should I do?

I am using 6.0 theme "Reflection White" for my iDVD project.
I have a macbook pro 1.83 GHz, I have 28 GB available on the internal hard-drive.
I've sucessfully created a disk image once for this project in about 2 hrs or so. I then added iTunes tracks and transitions and am doing the disk image again. This time it is taking much longer. I am going to let it run for a couple of more hours.
Have you noticed the Process Menus step take a long time? The text reads "Rendering menus (5 of 5) and menu transitions (19 of 19)". It has been this way for quite some time now.

  • Creating new Disk Image in disk utilities for TC. How long should it take?

I'm attempting to create a new disk image so that I can use my TC as storage in addition to back up. It's been "creating the image" since 6am today. It's 3:15pm now. ***? Is it supposed to take this long or is something wrong? I am attempting to create a large area of storage (500 GB). Could that be what is taking so long or should I hit cancel/give up...call Apple support?
    Please advise. Thanks!

    Hey Kristi,
How much is the actual size of the data you're trying to rebuild? This would be directly related to the duration of the process. Also, if you are doing it wirelessly, it could take forever and a day. Last night I used an archive copy of a file to install an application and it took well in excess of 90 minutes. I don't know the exact time except that this morning I woke up to find it completed. So wireless is not always painless.
Building is not the same as copy so that could be the reason for this. What would be interesting to know is whether you can check to see where it's writing wheter anything is being written.
