Disk images won't unmount/eject for admin user, DVDs & iDisk also affected

This problem started when I was on Tiger, and seemed to follow me onto Leopard.
It only affects me, the primary user on my Mac. *One other user on the computer; she also has admin level access and does not have any of these problems.*
Here's the deal:
*Once mounted, disk images won't eject/unmount.*
- Dragging to the trash can doesn't work. The eject icon appears, but nothing happens.
- Ctrl-click does not show Eject as an option when highlighting the mounted image.
- CMD-E doesn't work
- EJect doesn't appear as an option in the finder menu
- Clicking on the Eject button in the sidebar of the Finder window doesn't work.
- I've logged out, rebooted, repaired permission, and installed a new OS (clean install of 10.5, then did the import of my old user settings. Since I had the problem in Tiger, it's clear the problem followed me, but what the heck causes it?)
*The only way to unmount/eject a disk image is to use the Disk Utility Program.*
*DVDs also can only be ejected via Disk Utility*
The iDisk connection can only be killed by opening Activity Monitor and killing the webdavfs_agent process.
Would love some help. I've searched a lot and have a fair amount of folks with this problem, but no real solution.

That'll work; however, then the OP has to reset all of his preferences. Easier would be to log into the newly created admin account, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. Mount the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving these kinds of conflicts is a laborious process, but not as laborious as resetting preferences or even remembering what you set weeks, months, or years ago.

  • Disk Image won't automatically mount for Share iPhoto Library

    Hey All,
I've just got a new mac and am sharing an iPhoto library between two users. I moved the iPhoto Library Folder to a DMG set it to ignore permissions.
In each account I did the following: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
The problem is that the DMG won't mount automatically mount. I set it up under both user accounts to mount at start up but it won't do it.
    Am I doing something wrong?

Are you using fast user switching or logging out and then back in to the second account? It may be that fast user switching doesn't trigger a "startup" scenario in the second account which is necessary for the disk image to mount.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Disk Image Won't Mount - Reason: Device Not Recognized

As I've searched the discussion forums, I've seen plenty of postings for "Disk Image Won't Mount" and for "Device Not Recognized" but not the way I'm seeing it on my laptop.
After a backup and restore, my mac will no longer mount any... and I mean any images. I have downloaded several security or software updates from different vendors and each .dmg file will not mount. I still have the .dmg files in hopes that after I get this problem solved, I'll be able to install them, but...
It always gives the same reason for not mounting and I'm at a loss on what to do next. I've run Software Update hoping it will be a quick fix, but have had no success.
    Any suggestions?

I have a similar problem. Using FireWire disk mode, I put a disk image of my entire iBook onto my iMac as a back-up. (For an unrelated problem, Apple told me I needed to erase my iBook completely and do a clean install of the system.) Well, I screwed something up. I don't know what exactly--maybe I didn't "put away" the device correctly, but the next day when I flipped on my iMac, the disk image of my iBook was just gone, and not to be found anywhere. I finally succeeded in restoring the image using TechTool, which scanned the entire volume of the iMac for directory information. And it's all there, because the img file is more than 10GB. But when I double-click on it, I get the following error msg: "The following disk images failed to mount...reason--not recognized." I've checked the app it's supposed to open with, permissions, and run Disk Utility volume repair. No dice. Any ideas??? Did I mention that this is EVERYTHING I had on my iBook???

  • CDs, DVDs, disk images won't appear in Sidebar or on Desktop

    Hello,
Brand new iMac 2.16, right out of the box.
CDs, DVDs, and Disk Images won't appear on the desktop or in the Sidebar. Nothing is shown over the horizontal gray line at the top of the sidebar, no Macintosh HD, Servers, etc. Disk Images are fully functional, ie Disk Utility recognizes and mounts them just fine.
I checked Mac Help and followed its instructions:
    (1) In Finder preferences:Pane:General, all 'Show These Items on the Desktop' boxes are checked.
    (2) In Finder preferences:Pane:Sidebar, I checked all boxes under "Show These Items in the Sidebar. BUT these changes are NOT retained. After I close the Preferences, the Sidebar does not change. If I re-open the Sidebar preferences, the relevant boxes are now unchecked, as if I'd never done a thing.
Restarting was the only way to fix the problem. Thereafter, the upper items in the Sidebar (Macintosh HD, external drives, iPod, CDs) sometimes SPONTANEOUSLY disappear. They still show up on the desktop, but tweaking the Sidebar preferences is again ineffective. Restarting is the only solution.
    Thank you for your help,

Set up a new account in System Preferences / Accounts / +

  • DVD burned from a disk image won't work on different computers???

Video DVDs are in the UDF format. The disk image you created is in the UDF format. When you use Disk Utility to burn the disk image to writable media, the new discs will be in UDF format and all will be well.
    You are doing things correctly.
BTW, unless you have an external burner with lots of cooling, if you expect to use the burner in your Mac (which DOESN'T have lots of cooling), it's a good idea to pause between discs to allow the burner to cool down. (BTW, this comment is based on the reported results of several people in the forum. If you don't allow the cool down timer, you will start to create 'bad' discs. Also it is VERY important that you reduce the burn speed in Disk Utility to 4x or lower in order to create discs with maximum compatability with players. (You should see a way to change the speed in Disk Utility afterr you have inserted a disc.)

  • Burned Disk Image Won't Play on DVD Player and Work Around

    Hi all,
I was having problem with DVD not being recognized on a regular, stand alone, set top DVD player. The program was created in iDVD6 and saved to disk image. Then I used Disk Utility to burn it and the resulting disc played on Mac but not regular player.
Knowing that the blank media was good from a previous Toast 7 burn, I used Toast 7's Video TS option to burn from the mounted disk image. This disc worked on regular player with one small difference. With multiple videos (in addition to chapter markers) on the DVD, fast forwarding past the end of one video would start the next one with Toast, whereas the disk image (played on the Mac) would return to DVD menu.
I never burned directly from iDVD 6, since the video conversion process took 7 - 11 hours, so I don't know if that would work or not.
I hope this is helpful to some and if anyone decides to buy Toast from Roxio directly, leaving the online cart page open for a minute or two will pop up a 10% off incentive to urge you to check out. That's as of a week or two ago.

whereas the disk image (played on the Mac) would return to DVD menu.
That has happened to me, but not with the one project I made with iDVD 6.

  • How to stop pwsswd  change option for Admin user id or SLD or monitor ID

    Hello frineds,
As I know we do have one option to disable password change prompt using J2EE Admin tool ( Go to security provider->Usermanagement and search for the user
Select the user and check "No password change required") but this option checked for all user users by default and it prompting password change after 90 days (default).
Is there any other way to stop change password prompt for admin user ID's?

  • Application disk image won't eject off the desktop?

    Hi,
Lately I've been having this problem with either Firefox or Safari and I download something and the dmg extracts and I'm left with the white casing shell where the app is housed and it won't eject. I can't eject it from finder but dumping it to the trash from finder took it off the sidebar. I can't get them off my desktop unless I restart my Mac.
Why is this happening and how do I fix it? I'm using Leopard 10.5.2.
    S.

Thanks to DeltaMac I figured out all the problems I was having with my Finder. I was missing a lot of options under my Finder tab like Empty Trash, Preferences, Quit etc. Also I had no option to right click and eject disk images or external hard drives.
All you have to do is download Onyx here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20070
Then open up Onyx and go to OnyX/Parameters/Finder
put a check in the box next to Show Preferences item, Show Empty Trash, Show Quit item, and Show Eject item and whatever else you want. You have to do them each individually though and wait for the prompt. Then item log out and back in again and everything should be back to normal.

  • Password-protected Sparse Disk Image Bundle remembered after eject

I use password-protected Sparse Disk Image Bundles to protect some files. Every now and then, when I open the image, it doesn't ask me for the password and opens immediately.
At first, I thought I may have inadvertantly agreed to save the password in Keychains. But that is not the case. After running some tests, I noticed it may take up to 3 ejects before it asks me for the password again. It seems to happen more when I modify files in the disk image, but not when I simply read files. I suspect it is not completely unmounting the image.
This is potentially a security issue. Any suggestion on what I can do short of re-ejecting images until it asks for a password again?

You may have successfully increased the sparsebundle's potential capacity while failing to resize the contained partition. That seems to be what happened when I tried this myself. A resized sparsebundle containing the same files would not occupy much more space on disk than it did before.
*Provided you have a backup*, you could try the following:
Remount the image, then run Disk Utility and select the .sparsebundle (non-indented icon) in the left pane. Click on the Partition tab, and then see if you can pull down the lower right corner of the disk image partition to increase its size. If you can, then drag it to the bottom and click Apply.
Again don't try this without a backup. It may not be worth doing in any event - it's easy enough just to make a new, bigger sparsebundle and copy your stuff over.

  • External Drives, CDs & Disk Images Won't Mount

I am having some weird issues with my G5. I recently did a fresh install of Leopard on a brand new hard drive and everything was running smoothly. I copied a bunch of settings from another drive to keep my information intact on the new install and I didn't notice any issues. I have now started to notice that after about a day of leaving the G5 on, it no longer mounts disk images, CDs or external hard drives OR if it does in fact mount them, it takes FOREVER to do so. This also causes Disk Utility and System Profiler to crash or take a long time to start.
I don't know if this helps at all, but two new hardware additions to the machine were an internal bluetooth adapter (for use with the new Magic Mouse) and more memory. Both have been working correctly so I don't know that either is the cause of this problem.
I've tried a bunch of random things to see if I can get something to work again - fixing permissions, verifying disks, etc., but the only thing that really works is a restart. Everything stops working again about a day after the restart though.
Has anyone else encountered this sort of problem, and if so, do you have any suggestions for how to fix it? Any help would be appreciated!

So I think I may have something to show from Console regarding an external drive that took forever to attach:

  • Another OS 10.4.11 update problem - disk images won't mount?

    Hi people,
Have never had to post on these boards as i've never suffered serious problems with my mac, until today.
Whilst installing/updating my powerbook to version 10.4.11 my mac seemed to crash so i rebooted my system. Probably not the best thing to do (i have little patience so was annoyed).
I'm guessing the update installed as my mac says it is now version 10.4.11 but when i go to mount any disk images it will not mount at all, but instead comes up with this message -
"The following disk image failed to mount
    Reason - error 0xe00002c9"
I've verified and repaired the permissions on the startup drive in disk utility, and also verified the volumed and it says everything is ok in those departments. Although the option to repair the disk is not available for selection.
I've downloaded applejack, but obviously can't mount the image file.
Please help as this is a big problem with regards to my work and play!
    Thanks for reading.

Hmm thank you for your time and effort on this problem BDAqua but unfortunately it still doesn't want to work! The 'DMG utility' program comes back with an error when trying to mount any of the disk images i have tried. I have been able to get up the script of what its doing in the 'console' application but that is ridiculously long, and i'd be lying if i said i have a single clue about what any of the script in it means!
So i'm guessing i'm gunna be archiving and re-installing. But this boads another question as i haven't a slightest clue about how to archive my files as i really don't want to lose any of it.
    sorry BDAqua

  • Disk Image won't mount after 10.4.9 upgrade

After I installed the latest update, OSX can't mount the disk images after download anymore! Any explanation folks? :^)
It doesen't necessarily have to do with the update of course, but it is quite likely I think? Grateful for any help!

Choose any .dmg and get info (command-i). Turn the disclosure triangle under "Open With". It should be "DiskImageMounter". If this is not the chosen application follow this path to choose it:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/DiskImageMounter.app.
    Then choose "Change all".
If that isn't it. You may be able to repair this with 10.4.9 PPC Combo Update.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
    Let us know.
