Disk installation keep crashing - Hard Drive corrupt

Hi,
I tried to fix a hard disk problem on my 2010 macbook pro.
When I verify my disk with disk utility, it reports that 'The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaird'.
So I follow the instruction by using the install disk to fix it using disk utility, however before it manage to go to the disk utility, it always crash with grey screen telling me to restart the computer.
I cant even do clean install of the operating system, since it says that there's a bad sector.
Can someone help me?
thanks,
Joseph

If it gets bad sectors it need to be replaced.
Then you will have to ship every drive back, because they ALL have bad sectors, it's almost impossible to not have at least one.
The drive firmware has a system in place to map off bad sectors automatically, and one can force the issue with a zero erase procedure in special problematic cases.
I have multiple drives in every system I have never had bad sectors showing up unless the drive is starting to fail.
Well that's true for most people as the automatic system "**usually**" works.
But one can have bad sectors on a brand new drive from the factory, or they can occur out of the blue and corrupt data or lose files, or can occur if the heads strike the platters.
A zero erase cures these and it doesn't necessarily mean the drive is mechanically failing in each and every case.
If the drive has issues after the zero erase, then yes it's time to replace the drive.
Don't believe me, believe the drive makers
Why would I want to Zero Fill my drive?
The most common reasons to Zero Fill a SATA or ATA (IDE) hard drive are:
to remove a virus that cannot be removed without destroying the boot sector.
to change from one operating system to another and wish to remove everything from the drive.
to erase confidential information for privacy reasons.
to scan for bad sectors that can be detected and replaced with good spare sectors when writing to the sectors.
By design, modern disc drives maintain spare sectors for reallocation purposes.   **Usually**, sectors become difficult to read long before they become impossible to read. In this situation the actual data bytes in the sector are preserved and transferred to the new spare during a sector reallocation. Similarly, when a disc drive writes data (like a zero fill erase procedure) and encounters a problem, the drive firmware retires the problem sector and activates a replacement before giving successful write status.

Writing zeros to a drive is recommended any time an operating system is to be reinstalled on a boot drive or whenever a blank drive is desired.

  • MBP keeps crash, hard drives keep dying

Around a year ago i purchased a lemon of a macbook pro.
In the past 12 months the hard drive has failed twice, i am currently on hard drive number 3.
Apple tell me that I have just had a run of bad luck.
Now since the latest hard drive replacement, the machine simply dies / crashes for no reason - sometimes when I am not even using it.
I have pasted a crash report below, if anyone can shed any light on this, it might help me get to the bottom of the issue. I dont believe it is a hard drive issue. I think Apple are replacing the symptom without looking for the cause.
    Thanks

  • 10.5.6 Upgrade Repeatedly Crashes Hard Drives

I have been trying to upgrade my MacBook Pro (Fall 08 Model) to 10.5.6 for the past 2 weeks. Each time about 24 hours after the upgrade has completed, applications suddenly stop responding and the hard drive crashes.
The 1st time, I was running with a 7200 RPM drive that I installed to replace the original 5200 RPM drive that came with the system. This was done on November 1st. It ran 10.5.5 for about a month and a half with no problems. Then, when 10.5.6 was released, I upgraded. A day later, Apps stopped running and as soon as I plugged my iPhone dock into the USB port, the Hard Drive began making clicking sounds and the system stopped responding. Couldn't reboot or even boot from the original DVD because although the drive was not accessible, the system continued trying to access it thus disabling any attempts at booting from other media. After about 20 minutes of holding down the "C" key to boot from my original install DVD, the DVD responded and then took about another 5 minutes before it gained control of the system. Running a Disk Utility or System Profiler from the install DVD reported that there was no hard drive installed (all while the crash clicking sound continues from the drive, that indeed was still physically there).
2nd, I replaced the 7200 RPM drive with the original one that came with the laptop. Got all of my Data and Apps restored to the current date (December 19th from Nov 1st when I swapped it out with the other drive). At this point, I'm assuming that I just got a bad 7200 RPM drive and arranged to get it replaced. The plan was to keep using my original drive until the replacement arrived. Next, I upgraded my original from 10.5.5 to 10.5.6 on December 22nd and about 24 hours later, I sat my iPhone (Edge model) on top of the palm rest of the laptop, over the disk drive, and the Apps suddenly stopped functioning again. Immediately after this, the disk drive began making clicking sounds and crashed. Again, it took about 20 minutes to get the install DVD up to determine that Disk Utility and System Profiler again reported that no hard drive was installed.
3rd, I took the laptop to the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store, explained the 2 crash incidents and that I believed something in 10.5.6 and/or my iPhone in close proximity with a 10.5.6 system was causing this. They did some tests, couldn't figure out why both drives didn't work, and didn't buy the iPhone/10.5.6 theory. However, they gave me a BRAND NEW MACBOOK PRO (same make, model, specs). After I got this one home, with a fresh untainted copy of 10.5.5 on it, I upgraded to 10.5.6 on Christmas Eve. Today, 24 hours later, the drive crashed AGAIN just after I placed the iPhone next to the new laptop, as I was preparing to load my data from backup and sync my iPhone. This time, the crash occurred BEFORE I had any of my original Apps or Data installed - so this rules out an existing environment conflict of some kind as being the cause.
The 3rd drive failure had same symptoms as the other 2 times I upgraded:
    * Sudden freeze of most/all Apps
    * Spinning Beach Ball when attempting simple tasks like opening System Preferences, Finder windows, etc.
    * After Power-cycling (because all control had been lost), system cannot boot from hard drive
    * Attempts to restart from original DVD takes about 30 minutes
    * Disk Utility & System Profiler Cant' find hard drive
I will be taking this system back to the Apple Store on Saturday (because Genius Bar is closed on Friday, 12/26/08) to have it replaced again. WILL NOT BE UPGRADING to 10.5.6 until Apple addresses this problem.
Are there others out there who have had similar Hard Drive crashes? I've read posts about the Apps freezing and the need for some to do Archive/Install again after a 10.5.6 upgrade. However, I am unable to determine if any are experiencing the drive crash issue. If so, are you using the newer MacBook Pros or is this problem occurring on other hardware types? Are you using MacBooks with iPhones (even though I find it hard to believe the original iPhone could somehow be emitting something that's causing 10.5.6 to crash a hard drive; this iPhone worked OK under 10.5.5 with same hardware) I have 3 other Mac Models in my home but am now leery of upgrading to 10.5.6 on any of them...

Hello! It seems I have a similar problem. I upgraded to 10.5.6 a few days ago. Today morning, after turning the computer on from sleep, everything was working perfectly, however after few minutes while I was browsing the Internet with FireFox my hard drive started making "click - click" sound repeatedly, disabling me to do anything with my computer (the colorful spinning wheel appeared; it happened the exact same time when I clicked on a link in a news website). After powering off with holding the power button, I wasn't able any more to log in. I've managed to boot the Installation DVD and DIsk Utility found no hard drive.
After exchanging my hard drive (the old one is definitely broken - I was trying to use an external slot to try accessing it - unsuccessfully) I cannot any more boot the installation DVD. The DVD drive was relatively new, so it shouldn't cause any problems. The DVDs are also fine (no scratches, tried a couple of installation discs...). Holding "C" key for 30 minutes doesn't seem to work either... I only get the grey screen, with nothing on it...
At the moment I'm stuck, because I have the MacBook with grey screen and fans running at the full speed, which does not seem to read DVDs, though I can reset the PROM, as well as, boot it as a target and force-quit the disk with holding F12...
The worst thing is that I lost my data created over the last week... I hope apple will recognize that something is wrong with their update... If I get the bootable DVD to boot finally, I will write an update.
Greetings to everyone with the same problem.
    Chris

  • Data recovery for crashed hard drive?

Ok, recently my macbook pro internal hard drive crashed (I was receiving the question mark on folder at bootup). I have recently purchased a new hard drive and replaced it with the corrupt one. I tried to gain access to the data using an external caddy, however the hard drive did not appear in finder and I could not mount it in utilities.
Is there any possible way I can recover my files, preferably not through some company which wants thousands of $$$.

    hi friend,
No need to worry. There are many cases due to which hard drive crashes and not works. Don't worry! The data is not lost forever; it is only invisible from your computer. You might be thinking that the disk will overwrite the space of the deleted data with some other data. Running a wrong data recovery software application might corrupt your data and there are chances of losing them forever. By using a good hard drive recovery tool you can recover all your lost data from corrupted hard drive, crashed hard drives. You can easily download the free trial version of the software.

  • Application Installer keeps crashing, won't install anything!

I've been having a bunch of problems since upgrading to 10.5.2. I got a lot of things fixed, and the system is mostly stable, but one issue that remains is that I can't get any installer to run. Application Installer keeps crashing. (Unexpected Quit)
I tried a few receipts and they didn't work either. System Update seems to run fine and completes installs. I tried P-RAM reset, Safe Boot, Repair Permissions. One of the fixes to my other issues was Disk Warrior. (But having run it recently I doubt another lengthly pass will help.)
So I am a bit stuck. (And really missing my 3rd party mouse and it's much needed driver)

I too am in the same position, ever since I did an install using the combo updater (I think) at the beginning of the month I have been unable to install anything that requires a restart.
However, if the install doesn't require a restart it works OK.
I have checked permissions and disk, I have rebooted in safe mode and I have created a new account and tried all to no avail.
I have just downloaded the kits and tried and these too fail with the installer quitting.

  • Hard Drive Corrupt?

I am trying to reinstall OSX Tiger onto My Imac. Here's what I have tried.
Booting from external Hard drive with Basic OSX installed.
Disk Utility shows the Hard drive as ok. Repairs are all ok.
Also used Disk Warrior and Drive Genius to Scan Drive. Everything seems ok. Yet I still cannot install the system.
I've tried to restore and Image through disk Utility and NetRestore as well.
Also have tried just installing from an original Disk not luck.
I keep getting an Input/Output Error.
I'm not sure what this means and I'm starting to believe that the Hard Drive is corrupt.

It's likely that your drive is failing, if you have any data you need to save, try and get it off before the drive fails entirely. If you can, take the drive out and put it in an enclosure, see if it works then, but it's likely on its way out.

SMART is a technology that monitors the drive for signs of impending failure. You can verify that SMART is indicating a problem in Disk Utility. Select the hard drive and look at the bottom of the window. It should look like this:
If the SMART status is not "Verified" then you should back up your drive and start shopping for a new one.

Always want to keep the boot drive with more free space than may seem necessary for performance and to function at its best, 30-40% free or even 50% is not excessive.
Ideal is to separate your system from your data.
You should always have bootable backup / clone of your system
Don't use a green drive for system or data though.
When you are done cloning system and/or data, remove the old original and keep as backup.
Then move the system drive to #1 - no matter what you want to reset the default boot volume to where the system is.

By staying with 10.5.8 you are not going to receive security updates, might want to consider 10.6.8.

  • If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

You have to duplicate the photos unless you want to use PSE as the external editor for iphoto. In iphoto, your photos are stored in a proprietary library, which should never be messed with by programs other than iphoto. Writing to the iphoto library from outside iphoto is the fastest way to corrupt it and lose all the pics it contains.
So you can either set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from within iphoto, or you must export the photos from iphoto to be able to use them outside that program.

I have an imac 2009 the disk drive is damaged and I have lost the passwords I need to reset passwords I tried booting with a macosx disk from an external hard drive but did not read the drive how else can I reset password ?
I have a 2012 mac book pro can I use that to connect with firewire and load osx that way? and how woudl I do that?
    Thanks so much!

To what password are you referring? Do you mean your user account's admin password? Or do you mean the master password for File Vault or do you mean a Firmware Password?
    For an admin password:
    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you cannot do the above then try this:
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command until
you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message,
then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
How to reset the OS X password without a startup CD:
Reboot into Single-user Mode. Enter the following and press RETURN after each command line
       1. Type fsck -fy
       2. Type mount -uw /
       3. Type passwd <username>
I have never tried this method myself.

  • Application to scan and repair hard drive corruption?

Hi, my 2nd internal drive ran out of space and I'm afraid that there was hard drive corruption. Some of the video icon's weren't showing up and when I click on the video to play I kept getting beach balls. it seems to be better now but is there an application that can detect if there's any hard drive corruption? thanks

    Stuart Lawrence wrote:
The hard drive seems to be ok now. I have 90gb's of free space on it. What do you think happened to it?
I couldn't say. But 90GBs should be plenty of free space to work with.
You might launch Disk Utility and check something though:
You will notice that the drive appears twice int he sidebar of Disk Utility.
The upper listing is the physical drive itself and it's controller. Highlight it and note what is reported at the bottom of the window beside "Partition Map Scheme". If this drive is only going to be used on your Mac, then it should read "GUID Partition Table"
Now highlight the lower listing in the sidebar. This is the portion of the disk platter devoted to storing your data. What is reported at the bottom of the window beside "Format"? It should read "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

  • Using Disk Utility to erase Hard Drive

    Hi All
I just bought a new external hard drive and am using Disk Utility to erase and format it. I did not know for sure if erasing the hard drive was the right thing to do. Anyway I set up the Volume as follows from the mac help instructions:
    1.format OS extended journaled
    2.Install OS9 disk driver.
3.("Zero all data" and "8 Way Random Write Format"). So it has been running for about 3 hours now and is only 1/8 of the way writing 0's to disk.
My question is should I continue on and just let it finish up? At the rate it is going It might be done by sometime tomorrow.
Or can I stop the erasing process without hurting the hard drive.
Then start disk utility erasing the hard drive without this Zero all data.
    Thanks much

Just to confirm your impression, S. Frigolett: yes, everything should be fine now.
Zeroing a drive is advisable if you have reason to believe there may be bad data storage blocks on it; zeroing identifies those blocks and prevents them from being used (because using them would result in lost or corrupt data). A simple erase doesn't do that, but on a new drive straight from the factory there is no reason to think it's necessary.
The 8 way random write option is for people who have extremely sensitive data to erase from a drive that may pass into other hands, and who want to be sure that no one short of the NSA will have any chance of recovering any of that data. A new, empty drive has nothing on it that even the NSA could recover, so there's no reason to erase it that thoroughly.

  • Hard drive corruption

    Hallo
I wanted to reinstall a game I play but when I install it I get this error:
The installer was unable to read the file "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Blizzard Entertainment\World of Warcraft Installer\Movies.mpq". This error may be caused by problems with the media or drive at C:\--for example, a scratched or dirty CD-ROM/DVD-ROM, hard drive corruption, or a networking problem while downloading the installer. (The data being read was "enGB\WOW_Intro_BC_1024.avi", and the error code was 5.) If this problem persists, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (Converter::Load)
Does enyone know what I can do?
    Thanks

Sounds like you need to download the game again, the original files may have been corrupted or deleted.
You should at least run CHKDSK C: /F to fix any file system errors.

  • RE: Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive by wjosten

I really appreciate the detail that wjosten provides on the User Tip entitled "Syncing to a New Computer or Replacing a crashed hard drive".  I do have a follow up question though about my wife's iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1.1.  All her calendar and contacts are on the Cloud - not running through anything like Outlook or Windows Address Book, as far as I can tell.  In the past, we previously synched with a PC.
Since the calendar and contacts are on the Cloud, can we synch using the steps wjosten details on a new PC and not lose the calendar / contacts?  If not, do you have any advise?  Thanks.

If she doesn't want to sync her calendar and contacts with a supported program on her computer such as Outlook, just uncheck Sync Calendar and Sync Contacts on the Info tab of her iTunes sync setting before syncing (which I assume is what she was doing before).  She can continue to sync these with iCloud if that what she prefers by going to Settings>iCloud and turning Contacts and Calendars to On).
