  • HT202447 Drive Utility: Permissions differ on "Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin"; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x .

I downloaded & installed Java 7 for Mountain Lion 10.8.3 from http://www.java.com/download/mac_download.jsp . Upon running Verify Permissions in Drive Utility I receive the following messgae: Permissions differ on “Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x . Disk Utilities is unable to repair the permissions error.

Sorry, what I meant is I was getting the message "missing plugin", so I thought I had to repair Permissions and every time I tried I got that message “Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x", but then I followed Java instructions. I went back to Java 6 and finally I could access my bank.
I came across this article on the internet:
For the second time in a month, Apple has effectively blacklisted the current version of the Java Web plugin on OS X. The block comes just days after it was discovered that the latest version of the plugin, which had been rushed out to patch a critical vulnerability, can still be exploited despite its heightened security mechanisms.
Apple has worked to distance itself from Java in recent years. The company deprecated its own version of the Java virtual machine for OS X, instead deferring development to Oracle itself. The browser plugin in particular has become a common vector for malware attacks, and Apple removed the Java Web plugin from recent versions of OS X last year. Those needing the plugin must install it separately.
I even tried "About Java for OS X 2013-003", but it also didn't work.
That's why I decided to uninstalled Java 7 and installed 6 again and it worked.
    Thank you anyway.

I even fresh install the system and every time I do repair the permission I always end up with this even though it said repaired.
I figure this is the problem my laptop, sometime it wont save files or documents and it goes in limbo and had to force shutdown and have to restart on the
booth drive to have it permission repair. I just updated to 10.9.3 and will see if this stop the crashing but repair permission notice is still the same.

  • Disk Utility can not repair My Passport for Mac

I'm still learng much about Macs. I have a MacBook Air with a 1TB My Passport for Mac as an external HD. A few things have been acting a little strange, so I decided to run the Disk Utility. After running the Verify disk, it says that the volume needs to be repaired. When I try running the Repair Disk, I get a message saying :
Verify and Repair volume “My Passport for Mac”
    Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
    Error: Couldn’t unmount disk.
Is this OK, do I need to do something more?
I used the HD as extra storage as the SSD on the MBA isn't enough for my needs. I store 2nd libraries for iTunes and iPhoto on the My Passport. I ocasionally get error messages where neither will work and I end up having to dismount the HD and sometimes restart the MBA in order to make either work. My problems could be more than my original question, but I don't know enough yet on where else to start.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • HT203172 Permissions differ on "Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Frameworks/iPodUpdater.framework/iPodUpdater" ; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .

Why does disk utility keeps identifying the same permission errors, even after repairing them 5 minutes before?

Ignore it. It just means Apple hasn't updated the Permissions database to reflect the new location of that file. It's not an error. You can see that the Permissions for all 3 postions (read, write, execute) are identical in both, rwxr-xr-x, and the l before the first  one is a symlink indicating the file is in a different location. (The - in front of the second set just means it's a folder, a directory. The - inside, not before, indicates that write Permissions for that position are not enabled for that group.
You can keep repairing that until the cows come home and it will never change. It's not an error.
Btw, Permissions repair is pretty much a huge waste of time. It's not something to be done for general maintenance, but only when actually necessary.

I have already zeroed out the hard drive and re-installed Panther and the upgrade Tiger disc.
I repair permissions using the Tiger disc upgrade.
Can anyone help me with this??

    > I repair permissions using the Tiger disc upgrade.
One thing to note...  When running Repair Disk Permissions, it is best to run it while started up normally, from your normal startup disk, not from a Mac OS X installation disc.  The only time you should run it while started up from an installation disc is if some problem is preventing you from starting up normally. OTOH, Repair Disk can only be used when starting up from a different disk (such as an installation disc).
So, I would start up normally, run Disk Utility, and use Repair Disk Permissions on your normal startup disk.
NOTE:  Repair Disk Permissions often gives alerts messages that can be ignored.  They are more "informational," not serious errors.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
You should still run it periodically.  When you run it, what needs to be repaired has been repaired; consider the rest of it an FYI.  I've never experience a problem, where a Repair Disk Permissions message actually caused a problem.  But, if you ever get an error while running Repair Disk (or Verify Disk), that is usually a serious problem.

They really don't require repair. They are part of the ARD update. Ignore them as they are harmless. They will recur everytime you repair permissions.

  • Every time I use Repair Disc Permissions under Disc Utility, I get the following message: Permissions differ on "System/Library/MonitorPanels/Profile.monitorPanel"; should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are lrwxr-xr-x .

Can anyone explain this?  Every single time I use Disk Utility to repair disk permissions, I get the same messages, not just for Monitor Panels, but for every single item in the Library!!!, and this wastes a lot of time because once the permissions have been repaired, I find that the messages come up again immediately, suggesting that the repairs were not made!!  The messages always read as follows: should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are lrwxr-xr-x .
What is going on here, and how can I fix it permanently?

The structure of those packages changed in an update. There's nothing to fix.
The repair permissions function should only be used when troubleshooting an issue, and then only once per incident. Running it repeatedly won't fix anything.

Permissions will not repair in Mountain Lion 10.8.5 after updating Itunes to version 11.1

These days it's quite normal to get a long list of 'errors' on doing a permissions repair because Disk Utility has not been upgraded to allow for some changes made to the system.
As long as at the bottom of the list it says 'Permissions repair complete' you can safely ignore them all.

this may happen on external drives if:
The external drive was hotpluged (removed) without going the correct "eject" way
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted
    First Aid for external drive
    Close iTunes
Unmount (eject) external drive the right way.
    Mount drive again
Go to Workplace -> right click external drive -> choose "clean up" This will force the filesystem to rescan the file structure of the drive and rebuilding the file system table and journaling file.
After the tool shows "done" (could last some time depending on size of drive) restart iTunes
If your iTunes library is on your internal drive, this may happen
The system was not shoot down correct, e.g. "pulled the plug"

A brief and probably non-helpful answer: I know of no way to eliminate your large amount of duplicates other than by repetitive, tedious manual effort.
*There has got to be a simpler way.*
I hope you're right, but I don't think there is a simpler way.

  • TS3147 printer permissions will not repair?

Epson printer will not set up or not show up in printer list. And if I try to repair my permissions they will not repair it just runs out a long list of repairs that
    never quite gets repaired right.

These days it's quite normal to get a long list of 'errors' on doing a permissions repair because Disk Utility has not been upgraded to allow for some changes made to the system.
As long as at the bottom of the list it says 'Permissions repair complete' you can safely ignore them all.
