"Disk read error occurred" cannot even load System Recovery
Hello,
yesterday I powered on my computer, and it was almost froze, with only the mouse moving and even the task manager not showing up when called.
I first tried to make it go in standby, as I thought it was some program which didnt start as planned. After I closed the screen , the screen went black, but the pc continued to run. I then pressed the power button, shutting the system the hard way.
After that, I powered back the pc, which now only showed "Disk read error occurred, press ctrl+alt+del to restart" and obviously this wasnt the solution. I tried resetting the BIOS, then running the diagnostics on f2: it ALWAYS passes the test the first time, then if i try to run the diagnostics again, it says "NOT INSTALLED". I tried running the system recovery on f11, but the same "disk read error" appears.
I-ve already confirmed the problem lies in the hard disk itself {hitachi 750gb}, having plugged it in another notebook with an hitachi hard disk and still showing the same problem, while the other hard disk booted just fine in my HP.
I tried with a win7 cd, both recovering and installing a new version, but they both kept frozen for about 1 hour and did nothing.
I then made a bootable USB with Trinity Recovery Kit and after a quick diagnostic, it said boot partition has "unclean" windows files and tried fixing the problem, without success. I-m now writing from a bootable USB linux distro, because i cannot find a bootable iso oh hitachi recovery program, what should I do?
Is it possible the hard disk failed so bad for an uncommon closure of the system? It looks to me like some data got corrupted.
Please help me, as I-m an academy student and I use the PC for almost everything.
Thank you.
I-ve booted Boot Repair 64bit and tried repairing the boot section... i even checked the boot infos and printed an info file, can someone answer what the actual FOG is happening here?

Error:
Suddenly today, about 9 hours ago, the laptop froze while surfing normally on the net.. After a reset - done as followed: holding power button till computer shuts down, and power on again - the computer wouldn't start windows again, and only gives the message:
A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.
And will repeat the message after booting up with HP logo, and not enter Windows, time and time again if you press C+A+D
I've tried recovery system, but that didn't work, and I'ved tried CHKDSK and it found and said it repaired some errors but it still happens.
I then ran the start-up-test and in the end I got Failure ID 90DX6C-56S5S1-9XL03f-60S403 on Hard Disk 1.
I tried to Google it, and no results.
No recent system updates or anything new installed in a few weeks.Hi,
It would look like the Hard Drive is failing/failed, but try running the following test from the bios menu as it can provide a more meaningful error code.
Shutdown the notebook. Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu. Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run a test on the Hard Drive. Post back with the details of any error messages.

My son's satelite notebook has the error "A Disk Read Error Occurred, Press control Alt Delete to restart. The computer will not boot in safe mode. I have the recovery cd, but I stopped because I did not want to delete any of his data on the hard drive. Is there any way to recover the system without losing his files? His model number is A105-s4114
Plenty of ways to do this.
Option 1: Boot to a Linux Live CD like Ubuntu, Fedora, PCLinuxOS, or Knoppix and use it to transfer the files to an external hard drive, usb flash drive, or to another computer on a network.
Option 2: Remove the hard drive, place it in an external enclosure, hook it up to a running system, and transfer the files to that system or usb flash drive.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time. -

"disk read error occurred" when i turned on my notebook. what can i do to correct this?
when i tried to turn on my computer, i got an error message stating that a "disk read error occurred"
turned it off, restarted, pressed escape & got HP advanced system diagnostics (version 3.1.1.0)
the hard drive test resulted in:
smart check - passed
short DST - failed
failure ID: RLSNO3-5LC5T5-XD6V4J-60W303
product ID: XZ165UA#ABA
notebook is pavillion - DV5 - 2231nr
windows 7 Home Prem OA
the notebook is about 6 months old, so it's still under waranty.
what can i do to fix this problem?Hi,
Failure of the Short Disk Self Test would indicate that your Hard Drive is failing and will need to be replaced.
As your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.

Disk read error occured (press Alt+cntrl+del)
hi i am using hp envy 15 notebook.
okay, when i neglected disk test(maybe so many times)from black screen, i have got disk read error occured.
So i tried to enter in bios and do disk self test.
But it mentioned 'quick'. it didnt come up the result which are fail or pass. just one message 'quick'with 303.
is it corrupted my disk?
and i tapped F2 to check up my start up and hard disk and system... the start up check was failed, hard disk test was failed and system was passed.
Those tests i did on Hp advanced.
So, i tapped Esc to use system recover when it was booting.
after 25~30 minutes the hp recover was appeared.
But the message said cant find partition.
and i went to next step to use recover.
but i could not choose recover section(two method) i could choose only command promt. So i could do anything for recover.because i didnt have hp recover kit plus.
i know this is really happened... can you help me to solve this challenge...
This question was solved.
View Solution.Hi SLOXI,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP ENVY Notebook and getting a blank or black screen on startup. Try performing a hard reset. When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices, and remove memory cards from the card reader slot. Disconnect all non-essential devices. If that does not help try to turn on the computer you start to press F11 repeatedly till the menu opens. You can do a system restore. Here is a link to overheating as this might be the cause of the shutting down. If that does not help at the end of this document it shows you to do a hardware test.
Hope this helps.
Thanks.

My current Configuration:
3 node cluster, using clustered shared storage and about 22 VM's. The Host servers are running 2012 Data Center while all guest are running 2012 Standard. The SAN is EqualLogic and we are using HIT Kit 4.5.
I have a CSV that is running out of space, so I created another CSV so that I could move some of the VM's to a new home. I tested this by creating a test VM, and moved it successfully 3 times. I then moved an actual
LIVE VM and while it seemed to move ok, it will now not start. The message is "a disk read error occurred Press ctrl+alt+del to restart". I moved the test VM and it failed as well.
I have read several things about this, but nothing seems to relate to my specific issue. I have verified that VSS is working and free of errors as well. From the Settings menu for the VM, if I select "Inspect" the drive,
the properties all look fine. It is a VHDX and both the current file size and maximum disk size seem correct.
The VM's were moved using the "move - virtual machine storage" option within Failover Cluster Manager.
Suggestions?
Thanks.Lets see if I can answer all of those and I appreciate the brain storming. This really needs to work, correctly.
1. The Storage is moving.
2. VM's and SAN are on same device.
3. No, my Clustered Shared Volume, CSV, is out of room, (more one that later)
4. No, I actually have 2 sans grouped together. However, I'm moving the VM', form one CSV to another CSV on the Same san. EqualLogic PS 6110 is the one I am trying to move VMS around on, and the other SAN not involved in any way except
for it is in a SAN group is an EqualLogic PS6010.
5. No error During move, it took about 5-10 minutes, no error messages. Note, I did a test and it worked GREAT 3 times. Now both a live VM, and the test VM are doing the same thing.
6. No, the machine is not to large. The test making was a 50 gig drive, just 2012 standard installed with updates. The live VM was a 75 gig VM that was my Trend Micro Server, or anti-virus host.
7. Expand the existing SCV? Yes I should be able to, but there is an issue there. The volume was expanded correctly, Equallogic sees the added space, Fail Over cluster manager sees the added space, however disk manager only
sort of does. When looking at disk manager, there are 2 areas that tell you a little bit about the drive. The top part and then the bottom part. The top part only shows 500G, the original size, while the bottom part
says that it is 1 TB in size. I call Dell's technical support and after they looked at it I was told by the technician that they had seen this a couple of times and the only way to fix it was to move all the VM's to another CSV and delete the troubled
CSV. I thought about adding more space to the troubled CSV, but its on a production server with about 12 VM's running on it and I did not want to take a chance. The Trend VM was running on CSV-1 and working fine.
I must admit that the test VM, was on CSV-2. I moved the Test VM from csv-2 to csv-3 back and forth several times with no errors. The Trend Server was on CSV-1 and was moved to CSV-3, however it failed. Again, I then moved
the test VM from CSV-2 to CSV-3 and it failed the same way. I could not test the "TEST - VM" on csv-1 due to csv-1 not having enough space.
8. I did disable the network from the VM to see if that mattered it did not.
9. I have not yet had a chance to connect the VHDX to a new VM, but I will do that in about an hour, hopefully. Once I am able to test that suggestion I will post the results as well.
Again, thanks for all the suggestions and comments, as I had rather have lots to look at and try. I hope I answered them well enough.

I wasn't able to do anything... So I had to turn off my MacBook manually! When I restarted, I got a black screen with white letters saying 'A disk read error occured'.
It really looks like a Windows screen (ugly), and yes I have a Windows 7 BootCamp.
What should I do? Can somebody help me?
I can't start OSX or Win...Do you have any idea if I will lose all of my data when doing recovery?
Booting into the Recovery volume is just booting into a volume other than your normal boot volume. Also running Disk Utility will not affect your data at all.
Also download and run Etrecheck. Copy and paste the results into your reply. It's a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC to help identify the more obvious culprits. -
HT3986 A disk read error occurred
I installed windows 7 in mac PRO.
This time I switch on the computer it shows A Disk Read Error Occurred.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.
But it's no use.Nothing is coming out.
I tried Fn+ctrl+alt+del either.Julietomato wrote:
I did it.Now only Mac is available in the boot manager.
Good, so you now have one partition. Run Boot Camp Assistant (BCA) again and reinstall Windows, read all the instructions carefully and verify that your backup is current before you start. -
(msi z77a-g45 motherboard) A disk read error occurring
For the msi z77a-g45 Motherboard
I'm getting the "a disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart" error when booting in my new build.
I have recently switched out my 4gb stick of g.skill ripjaws ram for 4x2 gb sticks of 1333mhz ram. I have not done anything besides this and i just started getting this error. I tried each ram stick individually and they boot but i get the error. I tried the 2 and 4 dims and still get the error. I tried re-seating the sata and data cables to my optical drive and hd.
The only thing i can think of is that i was installing a windows update just before i left to go change the ram so if that could be an issue please let me know.
Thanks.>>Posting Guide<<

Windows 7 will not come up did dion. On it and it came up Hard Disk 1 failed what do I do to fix this problem . This is my daughters laptop.
The error indicates that the hard drive has failed. You can replace it with a retail hard drive if you are outside of warranty. Just be sure to replace it with one of at least as large a capacity as original to use Recovery Discs to install Windows on it. It can be larger, but not smaller. For instance , if you have a 500GB now you could use a 750GB but not a 320GB hdd.
If you need more help please post full Model number and/or Product number of the laptop-as listed on the Service Tag attached to bottom of laptop.

N500 notebook disk read error ocured
Lenovo 3000 N500 note book, windows vista. After many lenovo rescue and recovery system failed attempts to fix some problem,i followed the lenovo rescue and recovery procedure to factory defaults. When system restarted,a disk read error occurred message appeared and the note book did not boot at all times.pls advise!!!
mits, welcome to the forum,
in a similar situation I would download and create a bootable cd of Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test, found here, and then run it on the system to see if it reports errors on the hard drive. Even if you don't have an Hitachi drive it will tell you whether or not it is healthy.
Hope this helps

Equium U400-124 - disk read error
Hi guys
I have (had?) a Toshiba Equium U400-124 laptop with Vista Home Premium 32 installed.
Last night it just crashed, so I rebooted, and a message came up with "a disk read error occured, press ctrl+alt+del to restart".
This reappeared when I did the above.
I received no disks/dvd's with the pc when i brought it, so created a "vista recovery disk" on my desktop pc and tried it.
It says "windows is loading files", goes through the "egg timer" windows part, but then just hangs on a black screen (the arrow cursor is visible and moveable).
I left it all night after trying it a multitude of times, but still black.
Any clues?
I have read that I will need an original Vista disc to boot from?
RegardsHi
Can you access the advanced boot menu pressing F8? If yes choose repair my computer. Some files will be loaded and then choose the Toshiba recovery function and follow the screen instructions. Windows will be reinstalled now with the factory settings.
If cant access the advanced boot menu you must reinstall Windows using a Microsoft disk because you didnt burn the Toshiba recovery disk as yet (you had to do this yourself).
But as Eldoarado said you need the SATA drivers. Otherwise you cant install Windows because your notebook is equipped with an SATA HDD.
First download the drivers on the Toshiba page as Eldoarado suggested and then create a new Vista installation disk with these drivers. Therefore you can use vLite:

SDD install and disk read error message
I recently bought an HP Envy 17T 3200 Notebook. I wanted to upgrade the primary drive to an SSD. I bought a Sandisk Extreme brand new. I installed this in the primary bay. I used the recovery disks to restore the computer as I have done in the past with other HP laptops I've owned.
It went through all five disks and seemed to recover fine. When the fifth disk was finished, I rebooted the computer after removing the disk and received an error message:
"A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart".
Thinking I had a bad drive, I bought an Intel 520 Series SSD. I replaced the Sandisk with the new Intel drive. I repeated the process above. I installed everything and actually booted into Windows for the first time. I shut the computer down temporarily. A few moments later, I rebooted and again had:
"A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart".
The odds of TWO SEPARATE SSDs being bad are remote. Something else is going on here. I ran diagnostics on the disks and they both passed with flying colors. For now, I have the original disk back in the primary bay and the computer is running fine.
Has this happened to anyone? Do I have corrupt recovery disk files? What can I do?Hello
I'm writing this response although its an old post, since a quick search on google told me that alot of people have similar issues to this.
I will post my solution to the problem, hoping that it will help people who have this issue.
Description of problem; Just as OP, i was upgrading my primary harddisk on my Envy 17 to an SSD, and when i put the disk in it would not accept it, stating "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart".
As the SATA cable was functioning fine with the old Harddisk, i ruled that out.
Next thing i tested was wether the system would accept the harddisk if i pre-installed windows on it, before connecting it, this did not resolve the problem either.
I also reset the BIOS, did nothing.
Fustrated over this problem i acted on a hunch and disassembled the whole computer, cleaned it thoroughly and replaced the thermal paste on the heat sinks for the GPU and CPU. I also replaced the Fan on the cooling system (a simple cleaning may do the trick as well) Turned on the laptop with my new SSD in and voila, it accepted the disk and proceeded to start up windows.
I have never encountered a computer that simply wouldnt read a disk due to overheating issues, But it fixed my problem, so i'm a happy camper
Note that disassembling a laptop is an advanced job, if you are not comfortable doing it by yourself you should not attempt to do so.
By the way. This may or may not fix the issue for you, as far as i can tell this error can be the symptom of alot of issues, but if you suspect that your laptop may be overheating, this might be the solution.
