DISK UTILITY -- "New Image" problems

Maybe I don't get how this works. I used an external USB drive to back up my MacBook Pro, making an image un=sing Disk Utility "New Image." THis seems to have worked fine. When I attach the external drive and double click on the DMG file it open and I seem to have access to all contents.
Today I tried to make a second "New Image" on the same drive of my iMac24" and everything runs and makes a DMG file, but when I click on this one I get a msg saying the disk image "couldn't be opened" with the reason given being "no mountable file systems."
Does this make perfect sense to somebody?
Have I completely misunderstood the use and practice of the "new image" in Disk Utility?

Hey. If you want to make a DMG image of your iMac, you will need to boot off the install DVD and use Disk Utility from the DVD. To create the DMG is the same process: Select the "Macintosh HD" icon on the left hand side list of Disk Utility, click the "New Image" button, leave "Image Format" as "Compressed" and its up to you for Encryption, I always leave it as "None".
Select to save your DMG image on the external hard drive and click save. Once the image is done, click on "Image" on the menu bar and click on "Scan Image for Restore...".
That's it!

Error using Disk Utility 'New Image'

I keep trying to make a new image of DVD's using Disk Utility, but it keeps giving me an error message. I'm at work right now and can't remember the specific message, but I've tried several times and it keeps interrupting the process. I've made copies before without any problems, then all of a sudden this started. I still have about 26 gigs free on the hard drive, and these discs are nowhere near that much memory. Anybody have this problem or know how to solve it?

I was able to extract the video from DVD to .m4v format using handbrake. I still could not get iMovie to recognize the file. I then changed the .m4v to .mov and it was recognized. Once I edited my movie I did not realize that sharing would take sooo long to burn back to iDVD. I had a 56 min video clip and it took 3-4 hours to share. I was up all night, but I have a DVD to turn in for my ALCMS training video. Hope this helps!

Boot the Recvoery USB, use Disk Utility to select the internal drive makers namea and size on the left.
Now select erase and select the midde option and click erase, it will take a bit to complete but it's best for the drive.
Now select Partiton tab, click the big box and Options: GUID and then Format: OS X Extended journaled and click apply.
Quit and you should be able to install OS X now with your Apple ID and password.

Disk Utility: new disk image takes forever- computer unresponsive-HELP!

I'm using Disk Utility to create a "new disk image from folder." The folder is on one Lacie exernal usb drive, and the target location is another Lacie usb drive (150 GB free).
The folder is 55GB. After 3+ hours, the activity window still shows "creating image" though the progress bar has changed from blue to pulsating blue/white stripes and I have the spinning beach ball of death.
Computer is unresponsive and the only way to terminate is to press the pwr button until everything shuts off.
Why is disk utility hanging like this? (or does it take more than 3 hours to create an image 55GB in size?
I've had no issues with previously creating images, though these were all 15GB or smaller.

USB takes forever....the reason I got a Firewire Ext. Drive.
It's soooo much easier to make a clone doing the following.....
I like the free demo of SuperDuper to make clones. It's free, Tiger and Leopard ready and is easy to use. If you buy the full version you can do incremental backups.
You should use Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, booted up on your install disk, before you make a clone of it.
I then partition my external disk, in Disk Utility, with a partition that is the same size , actually a tad bigger, as my system disk. I then use SuperDuper to clone my system disk over to that partition.
With a clone on an external FireWire drive (USB drives are not bootable on PPC Macs but are on some Intel Macs) you can bootup on it to do your repairs or just run your Mac anytime you have trouble with your main drive. Be careful, there are a few external FireWire drives out there that are not bootable on PPC Macs. Check the drive's manual to be sure.

Disk Utility - New Bundled SparseDisk volumes cannot change view

Running SL 10.6.1 on a early 2009 Mini.
Through Disk Utility, I created a new Sparse Bundled Disk Image with 256bit encryption. That is no problem, except I cannot customize the view of the mounted image. The default is icon view, with no toolbar at the top of the window. I want to have the regular array of toolbar icons at the top of the image and view it in column mode, but when I manually change this, it doesn't apply to the mounted disk image window.
Older disk images I created in other OS versions mount and display just fine, but I cannot figure out why this is a problem in SL.
Any thoughts or fix suggestions? Greatly appreciated!

Disk Utility - Create Image Fails

Hello all -
I'm trying to make an image of one of my hard drives as a back up. I've followed the instructions in Disk Utility help, but when I click "Save" to try to create the image I get a failure message "Unable to create <Disk Name>. (Resource Busy)".
I've tried saving to the destination with a new folder, that did not solve the problem. No other applications are running and both the source and destination disks are mounted and appearing on my desktop. The source is a USB connected drive, destination is a firewire drive, and I can read and write to both the source and destination disks.
Anyone have any idea what this failure message means and how to correct the problem? Thanks - Randy

If you don't mind I'd like to discourage you from backing up a drive onto a disc image file no matter where you plan to save it. Disc image files can be very problematical when it comes to trying to restore the backup. Furthermore, you cannot boot from a disc image. If the disc image file becomes corrupted then you have no backup.
I would like to propose that you think about a better way to backup your drive. You can clone the drive to your backup drive. It's easy to do using Disk Utility's Restore feature. A clone backup is not only bootable but you have direct access to all the files on the backup.
In order to make a bootable clone open Disk Utility. Select Disk Utility Help from the Help menu. Search for +duplicating a disk+. Click on "Duplicating a disk" at the top of the list of articles. Follow the directions.

Disk Utility: Create Image from Volume Without Unused Space

I'm trying to create a disk image from a mounted volume (flash memory in a video camera) but I don't want to write to it later, it's just for archiving. The problem is that the size of the original volume is 16 GB, so every image I create is huge, even if there is less than a 1 GB used.
For example, I only have two short clips on there, about 1.1 GB used. When I create a new .dmg from the volume, the file is 5.28 GB and when I mount it it tells me the size of the volume is 15.3 GB. Clearly I understand why this is happening, it's creating a bit for bit copy of the original volume, but I don't need all that space since I'm never going to write to it.
In disk utility it won't let me resize the image (it's grayed out). What do I do?

I actually don't understand why this is happening (when I do this the created disk image only uses the space it needs) but you can get around it as follows. First create a blank read/write disk image to the size you want and then restore the memory card to that image.

Disk Utility RAID setup problem

I just formatted two 5TB drives in order to setup an internal RAID for an Intel Mac Pro (early 2009 OSX 10.10.1). I had no problem installing a RAID on 2TB drives a couple years back using Disk Utility. Now, the RAID option does not even appear for the new disks. I can see the RAID option when choosing the OS disk. The only other hint is Disk Utility says "this type of disk cannot be used as part of a RAID set". I have never seen this error. A disk is a disk (and a horse is a horse of coarse of coarse).
What do I do to make these drives eligible to be part of a RAID?
The disks are Seagate ST5000DM000. See image below for lack of RAID option.

Thses are normal but innocuous messages resulting from installing ARD and Java updates. If you now have Lion installed then these are left overs from the Snow Leopard system you upgraded. Don't worry about them. They will recur when you run repair permissions.

Disk Utility says no problems but Diskwarrior disagrees

Need some advice. I ran Disk Utility yesterday to verify my drives before upgrading to 10.4.4 on my Dual 2GHz. It came up with some errors but said it couldn't fix them. Went to Diskwarrior which also said it couldn't fix it. Did a safe boot which is supposed to force an 'fsck' but the system never fully booted from that, probably failed at the fsck (the fans turned on full blast at the grey bootup screen then eventually powered off by itself). When I rebooted, I ran Disk Utility and it now reports the drive is fine. Diskwarrior still scoffs at that though.
Disk Utility said something about File Allocation Table mismatch.
Diskwarrior said the directory structure could not be repaired.
SMART says the drive is fine.
TechTool Pro reports a Bitmap mismatch and could not repair the drive.
Thing is, I don't see any problems with the drive at all. System boots fine and there are no corrupt files. It's a 3 month old 300GB Seagate so I don't think it's a hardware problem. But I've had some kernel panics related to my video iPod (the one where the G5 kernel panics if you have low space left on the iPod) which is where I'm guessing this all started from.
I've left it for now with Retrospect backing up the drive to a new external 250GB drive I had to buy just for this. I was planning on formatting the problem drive, testing it again and then restoring the Retrospect backup. (The only issue I've had with Retrospect is I Duplicated the problem drive to that new drive and had about 4000 files with different dates. I'm hoping that doesn't happen using the Backup function instead.)
Is this the right path? Or anybody think it could be a hardware issue? I've never done a full system volume backup with Retrospect, will I run into problems making the restored drive bootable again? And last, are there any other programs I should try?
BTW, I thought Journaling was supposed to fix all this!!

Disk Utility - Scan Image for Restore - Freeze

I backed up my wife's iBook by starting her computer in target disk to my iBook which has a huge external attached. After about an hour, the image process was complete. Apple disk utility help says next to scan image for restore (not too sure why because I'm not restoring anything unless her drive dies). I begin the scan image for restore and get the progress bar that never shows and progress. Just keeps spinning/scanning for hours and I have no option to shut if off. Can't move external to trash because it in use, etc.
Does this mean the original disk image may be bad? Do over?

What format is the external drive?
Is it Firewire or USB?
Does the external drive have one of those front button touch things, like a My Book?

It can take quite awhile, and the progress bar isn't accurate at all, but it sounds like something is wrong.

H.D. Clicks When Booting But Disk Utility Says "No Problems"

My friend installed a new 300 gig Seagate on his G4 a couple of months ago. It has worked fine until now. Suddenly, it won't boot up from the HD -- just clicks. He gets the spinning ball and it freezes up. HOWEVER: (1) The icon does appear on the desktop and (2) When he starts up from the CD and runs Disk Utility, D.U. recognizes the H.D., checks it successfully, and reports "No Problems Found." He can hear it spin up and everything just fine when he is checking it with Disk Utility.
So, it seems to go into the "clicking and spinning ball syndrome" only when he is trying to boot up from it. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi everybody! after installing snow leopard, as a way to get to lion, I dont have the disk utility apps.
Besides Im having a lot of problems with an external new Toshiba 1T disc that I try to use with Time machine cause I daily receive the OSX msg CANT REPAIR THE DISK REFORMAT IT!

Before you go to Lion, just a reminder. I know you recently moved up to Snow Leopard. Be sure that everything you were running in Leopard, and now in SL, will work for you in Lion.
Remember, Rosetta and all PPC apps are gone (Word 2004, some versions of PhotoShop etc) Check the compatibility list before you ditch SL.
As far as your Disk Utility problem, how hard is it to reinstall SL?
I've taken a screen shot of my Utilities folder to show you what you are looking for. The Utilities folder as mentioned above is in the Aplication Folder (or you may have pulled it out to the side bar as well, in which case there will be an icon and the word Utilities in Places in the side bar.

My MacBook Pro 13 inch makes a clicking noise from the hard drive and can not start up in safe mode and normal. I then ran disk utility in recovery mode and disk utility shows no problems with the hard drive. What is the problem?

I proceeded to boot in safe mode, but it doesn't work. When I ran disk utility in recovery mode, it showed no problem with my disk. Does any one know what the problem is?

Sounds like a mechanical problem with the drive and it ruined the sectors where the Macintosh HD partition (and OS X, and files and programs) reside, but not your Recovery HD partition.
If you held command option r while booting, that's Internet Recovery and it's loaded via the Internet, not via the Recovery HD partition on the boot drive, so that could mean the drive is dead mechanically or there is another issue.
In either case the drive will likely have to be replaced, it's a matter of what occured to where and the drive state if you can recover data or not. If you made recent backups then your fine.

Disk Utility Errors/ Mail Problems

My mail was working fine the other day, but suddenly it won't connect to any of my email accounts (gmail, university email account, etc). I tried installing Thunderbird and read my messages through that but it still won't work.
Additionally, skype stopped working too. It said I could connect but it would show that no users were online, when they were infact online. However, I reinstalled it and it solved the problem. But mail still won't work...
I looked at my firewall settings and they seemed ok.
The internet/network connections are working completely fine. I can browse normally with Safari. The only things that have changed are Mail and Limewire. Limewire no longer connects properly and mail can't seem to connect to any of my accounts. No preferences have changed to my knowledge. I even tried dragging the preferences folder to the desktop and let the preferences go to the default, however, Mail still did not work
AND I decided to run the processes in Disk Utility and it wouldn't even finish verifying the Disk! It said this:

Boot into Single User Mode (command s) and run the fsck. The instructions are there when you get to the prompt: /sbin/fsck -fy
Don't use an older version of 10.4 than 10.4.6 to be safe, ie if you have 10.4.0 DVD it is recommend to NOT use it. There are 10.4.3 and 10.4.6 DVDs of Tiger.
Best: have and use an emergency boot disk on another drive, just need a small 10-20GB partition and update it with minimal Apple updates, and run your disk repair utilities from there.
