Disk Utility/Repair Disk

Hello - my wife and I are using older Alum. G4 PBs (1.5 and 1 ghz, respectively) and both are getting a little buggy. Both are near maxed out on their HDDs (hers 2.74gb avail out of 74.41, mine 3.78gb avail out of 55.77)
I expect that I'll be upgrading her HDD in the near future, but until then what can be done with Disk Utilities? I did 'Permissions Verify' and 'Repair' on her PB this morning, but I see in other posts something about using another Mac connected via FireWire to do Disk Repairs. Any info on this would be appreciated. Will use on each machine via the other in turn, if it'll be helpful. Thanks

Regarding the previous two comments about available disk space, I'm not sure why you would need 10% free space. I have a 500GB internal hard drive and that means I would need to keep 50GB free, that doesn't even make sense.
The only two situations that this would make sense would be:
1) if you're dealing with large files. The computer fragments files on the hard drive when there isn't enough consecutive space to store the data, so if you're dealing with 10GB video files in Final Cut Pro, then yes, it would be bad to have limited free space. So you wouldn't want to fill up your hard drive if you're dealing with lots of big files. But if you're dealing with normal files, then this shouldn't matter. 2) Mac OS X makes extensive use of Virtual Memory (VM), which requires free disk space on your startup disk, aka your boot volume. If you startup disk is nearly full, your Mac's performance will degrade considerably. If you're running application(s) that are using lots of memory for various reasons, your computer will use your hard drive to cache data just like it does in your RAM. So, you wouldn't want to fill up your hard drive if you think you'll need lots of virtual memory.
In addition to the above, it could simply be hardware issues. Your hard drive could be going bad. If you'd like to check to see if you're having issues with your hardware, you can check out the Apple Hardware Test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2684
Until you do AHT and/or provide further information about the above two items, I don't think anyone will be able to help you further diagnose your issue.

    Hi. I’ve been experiencing some mildly squirrelly behaviour with my system (vide infra) so decided to repair the two internal hard drives on my computer. The primary hard drive is a 74.53 GB ST380013AS that came with the system; its S.M.A.R.T. Status is “verified” and Disk Utility repairs permissions just fine. However, the second internal drive (Maxtor 6L250S0, 233.76 GB, lower Bay, Journaled HFS+), despite being verified by S.M.A.R.T. status and apparently running OK, fails to unmount when I ask Disk Utility to repair it- I get the above error message in red. I have repaired this disk with DiskWarrior (v3.03) and all appears to run AOK. Can anyone tell me why I cannot get Disk Utility to run on this secondary (eg, non-startup) disk? I have tried many times and the error is reproducible. Thank you!

Type: sudo lsof | grep Leave a space after the p in grep, then drag the icon of the problem volume to the Terminal window. The pathname for the volume is pasted in for you; press Return. Then enter your administrative password at the prompt, and press Return."
    At this point, one now has a list of the open files/processes on the volume that will not unmount. You can use Activity Monitor to terminate these processes if you wish, and then the volume will unmount as it should.

    Why this cannot be repaired/ is it a serious problem?

    This has been around for a while. ::grin::
    This article gives some info about this in earlier OS X versions. Even though this article has not been updated since 10.6, this same ARDAgent.app has given this same warning when repairing permission.

  • Disk Utility & Repair Disk Permissions & Unknown User on External Seagate

    I have a new iMac running Leopard and don't do stupid things to my mac. I have a couple external Seagate Freeagent drives but 1 of them is giving me a little trouble. So I figure, I'll try to repair disk permissions on it but the problem is when I go into Disk Utility, the Repair Disk Permissions option is NOT available. It's there, I just can't select it; it's grayed out. Why? I'm an admin! The other externals have this option available but not this one, so I'm not really sure what to do. I've about 300gb of family movies on it that I'd rather not wipe out just to be able to do a disk permission repair.
    Whenever I do a command+i on the drive I do see an UNKNOWN user but this article, http://www.pcworld.com/article/145425-1/quickand_easy_folder_sharing_in105.html, leads me to believe that Apple hasn't done jack squat to allow us to fix the problem.
    Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

    I don't know how you manage to repair permissions on externals without system files on them but what I said is quite true.     I did have Tiger installed for 3 months before I got Leopard, but my externals have known nothing but Leopard.
    That doesn't matter. the ownership of files on your external were set in Tiger and it remains in leopard. that's what causes the "unknown" user to show up.
    The problem I'm having with one of the drives is that starting yesterday it's having difficulties mounting. Sometimes I restart the computer and the drive doesn't show. So in order to get it to show, I have to power down the external (which is and appears to be running) and then power it back up, and if that doesn't work, usually reseating the USB works.
    Then again... My problems started happening after I installed CandyBar and applied some folder changes. I have since dumped it.
    whatever problems you have with that external they have absolutely nothing to do with Candy bar. all candy bar does is change a few icon files on your main hard drive. that can have no effect on mountability of anything.
    This sounds to me like a hardware problem with your external. the drive could be failing. the USB bus could be failing either on the drive or on the computer. One thing you could do is check to see if there are any firmware upgrades for that drive. Look at the manufacturer's website. also try testing the drive with another computer if you can.
    On another note... Anyone use CandyBar and NOT have any problems or really like it? Maybe it was just a coincidence.

    I just upgraded from Tiger to Leopard 10.5.8 and everything very nearly went well, thank you.
    Very nearly, because at the end of repairing disk permissions, when opening "Show details", now there is appearing following remark:
    "Permissions differ on "System/Library/Frameworks/CoreVideo.framework/Versions/A/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- ."
    This message stays on, even after repeated repair runs.
    Any reason to be worried?

    It's innocuous. It's the result of some upgrades. Nothing about which to be concerned. The message will be repeated each time you repair permissions.

  • Disk Utility Repair Disk Permissions now Documents folder is empty

    After having trouble downloading a file (error message said disk was full but I had 12g free) I decided to try the 'Verify Disk' and then 'Restore Disk Permissions' actions in the Disk Utility application.
    Now my 'Documents' folder is empty! No disk space has been freed up so I believe the files should still be there, I just can't see them. When I choose the 'Get Info' action on the 'Documents' folder it says 0 files.
    Can anyone help? Please and thanks.

    Use that to search your whole drive for some file you're missing, search for files only, include invisible files.
    Or we could make the Finder show invisible Files & Folders by using Terminal &...
    Open the terminal and type or copy/paste:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true
    Reverting to the default of NOT showing hidden files:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false
    *Restart or Force Quit Finder* required to take effect.

    I don't know about that one. Browsing other discussions I see some have just dismissed it as being part of that group although it isn't specifically mentioned. In Leopard (a long-standing issue it seems), people applied updates and they all cleared. It looks like you're up to date now so that might not apply unless you reapplied the update.

  • My MBP won't boot anymore after "repair disk" and "repair disk permission"

    My 2011 MBP 15 with Lion stopped working after I attempted to use Disk Utility to "repair disk" and "repair disk permission". 
    It was having weird issues before I attempted the repairs, it was freezing every few seconds no matter what I am doing, the whole thing would freeze with only the mouse movable. then after a few seconds it goes back to normal again. This happened after I downloaded and installed some updates from Apple. I don't know if the updates would cause this or it's something else.
    In Disk Utility, "Repair Disk Permission" took 5 hours.  While "Repair Disk" resulted in "Disk utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files".
    Now when it boots, there's a loading bar under the Apple logo, it loads half way and shuts down itself. 
    I can still get into CMD+R Utilities though.
    Any idea how I can extract the data out of the disk?  I'm going to format and do a clean install.

    A stopped loading bar is indicative of a failed firmware install that didn't complete, it's trying to install and is failing.

    Lastly it could be your boot drive is failing or something wrong happened with the update and accounting for all the to the other issues.

  • Disk Utility says disk can't be repaired but it is still working

    Recently my MacBook Air had some performance problems--many programs crashing, etc.  I ran Disk Utility and it came back saying the disk is corrupt and needs to be repaired.  I rebooted and ran the Disk Utility repair function but Disk Utility said the volume could not be repaired and recommended that I back everything up, wipe the drive, and restore.
    The thing is that my computer is now functioning normally.  Disk Utility still says there's a huge and unrepairable problem, but aside from that, everything is working fine.
    I have a time machine backup, so I could wipe and restore the drive fairly easily, but it would take some time to do it.  I'm in the middle of some important things for work and so I'd rather put this off for a couple of weeks, if I can.
    A few questions: (1) is there other software, aside from Disk Uility, that I should try to repair the disk?  (2) How much of a ticking time-bomb do I have with this problem?  Though reformatitng and restoring would be a hassle right now, it is less of a hassle than if my computer were to fail completely minutes before a presentation.  So, if this is an urgent problem, then I'll probably address it now.  But, if Apples have been known to soldier on for months despite error messages like what I've received, then I may take my chances and wait to reformat/restore until a more convenient time.

    I've got regular time machine backups and just backed up some of my data by copying some key folders to an external drive.  I'm bit paranoid about backup integrity and would ideally like to do another full backup to a different drive using a system other than time machine, in the event that something goes wrong with the time machine backup.  Any recommendations on good and affordable backup software to do a backup of my TM backup?
    One other question: I seem to encounter problems like this pretty frequently.  I'd say once a year or so, my drive fails completely or gets near enough to failing that I have to wipe and restore.  (I've never had a TM backup fail to work, though the last go around there were some hiccups which has led to my backup paranoia.)  I've had this happen on multiple computers, so I'm becoming pretty convinced that the problem lies somewhere in my data.  Is it possible (even likely) that there's something in my data causing this recurring problem?  If so, is there anything I might be able to do to try and pinpoint and address this problem?  I'd love to go one year without having to wipe/restore my machine!
    For a while I thought I just had bad luck.  But I think this is like the 4th or 5th time this has happened in the past 4 years and every time, I'm restoring from a backup, so I come back with the same data.  It's the one constant since I've had 3 different machines over this same time period.

    I suppose it is serious bug in Mac OS Lion managing FileVault and wonder what the help could be?

    Most likely culprit is your Lacie drives which are notorious for flaky power supplies which cause just the sort of erratic behaviour that you describe. Have had similar issues myself. Lacie has been good about replacing my power converter-- twice. If you have seven of them, good luck finding the bad one or more. Like I said, the behaviour is erratic. Sometimes it'll work sometimes not. I can't comment on Samsung drives because I've never used them and have never heard anything about them. Same with Softraid. Why not just use Disk Utility. Sounds like you're ready for an external hardware raid. This will be much faster, much more reliable, and may even be cheaper than seven firewire drives. Check out G Tech, and Maxx Digital for starters.

    There is nothing in that message that requires repairing. That is why it keeps showing up.
    The permission database has to be updated every time the system is updated. If they miss a change that they have made in the system, it will get flagged as you see, but doesn't mean anything is wrong.
    That KnowledgeBase article also must be updated to reflect the things they missed.
    All that message is saying is that the directory derby is now replaced with a link to another directory (the l vs the d). However, mine doesn't have a link. Did you install anything that might have updated derby?
    If you open Terminal and enter this code, can you post the line that has derby on it?ls -al /usr/share/
    I'm repairing permissions now to see what pops up for me, but that will take a little while.
    Edit: I looked into the Derby directory and Derby is a Relational Database Management System used by Apache. So, did you install something that modified Apache, PHP, mySQL or something like that? It might have altered the link.

    I have been having some issues with a Kernel Panic on my MBP. I am trying to solve them with the help of the X-Lab, but when I do the disk utility>repair permissions I get the following messages:

    Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Permissions repair complete
    Does anyone think this may be a contributory factor. If it is unlikely that these are not to do with the Kernel Panic, any ideas as to what they are and what I should do.

    I repair permissions on Macitosh HD (boot volume)  every-other week.  I've noticed that the same permissions seem to need repair each time.  Here are the last seven lines from the Disk Utility window from the May 19 run:

    I might be overly sensitive, but I detect certain similarities between these results.  In fact, it looks like Disk Utility repairs exactly the same permissions every time and those permissions are corrupted shortly after they are repaired.
    What's going on here?   Should I be alarmed? Or should I panic?

  • Disk Utility repair failure: You need to restart your computer. Hold down...

    While trying to backup my macbook pro (running 10.5.8 leopard). I kept getting the gray window that forced me to shut down my computer. After some research, I conluded that I needed to check my HDD for damage. I ran the Verify Disk option (Repair Disk option was not yet "clickable"), and it says
    First Aid Failed
    stopped verifying HD because the following error occured:
    Filesystem verify or repair failed.
    In the text box below that, it says
    "(It should be 771886 instead of 771889)
    Invalid volume directory count
    (It should be 148275 instead of 148272)
    The volume Macintosh HD needes to be repaired.
    ERROR: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
    I then tried the Repair Disk Permissions option and it came up with three difference
    Library/application support/proapps
    System/Library/privateframeworks/browserkit.framework

    In the Verify Disk error, it says that it needs to be repaired, but the repair disk option is still not clickable. I don't know what to do from here. Is there someone more tech savvy than I who can help?

    You cannot do rewpairs from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair:

    Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.
