Disk Utility - Scan Image for Restore - Freeze

I backed up my wife's iBook by starting her computer in target disk to my iBook which has a huge external attached. After about an hour, the image process was complete. Apple disk utility help says next to scan image for restore (not too sure why because I'm not restoring anything unless her drive dies). I begin the scan image for restore and get the progress bar that never shows and progress. Just keeps spinning/scanning for hours and I have no option to shut if off. Can't move external to trash because it in use, etc.
Does this mean the original disk image may be bad? Do over?
I'm using Disk Image as a solution for a total disk backup if a drive fails. No messing around with reconfiguring apps, etc. (i.e. plug and play) Is this the best way to do this?
I come from the Mac Plus days. Hopefully I can contribute to the new OS discussions at some point. Thank you much!

What format is the external drive?
Is it Firewire or USB?
Does the external drive have one of those front button touch things, like a My Book?

It can take quite awhile, and the progress bar isn't accurate at all, but it sounds like something is wrong.

  • Disk Utility: What does "scan image for restore" do?

Before restoring a disk image, I know that I need to use Disk Utility's "Scan Image for Restore…" feature.
Exactly what does this feature do?

    I asked because I didn't know.
I was helping someone upgrade his PowerMac G5 from the original 80GB hard drive to a 1TB drive.
Since the G5 can accommodate two internal drives, I could have simply added the new drive and used Disk Utility's "restore" feature to migrate his data directly from the old drive to the new drive.
But it was more convenient for me to work at home so I removed the old drive, and brought it home along with the new drive.
I couldn't connect both drives to my MacBook Pro, since I only have one SATA drive dock. So I did it like this:
    1. Connected the old drive to my SATA dock.
    2. Create a disk image from his old drive, saving it to an external USB drive.
    3. Disconnected the old drive from the SATA dock and connected the new one.
    4. Restore the disk image to the new drive
Of course, when I tried step 4, I got an error message about needing to do a scan first. That's what led me to this question.
I have a follow-up question: When I created the image, I didn't bother changing the default image format, which is "compressed." If I had given the matter a little thought, I could have created a read-only image, since I would never need to change the image.
If I had used read-only, would Disk Utility have created the checksums on-the-fly when it created the disk image?

  • Disk Utility: after creating the .DMG (compressed image) When "scan image for restore" finishes it displays "unable to scan (internal error)". Since the process was scanning for about 1 hr is this a fake warning?

External 500GB drive is partitioned with 400GB for Mac OS extended (journalling) and 2nd partition formatted today as "ExFAT".
Yesterday I tried to create a disk image of my HD to no avail - this was compressed on a FAT partition. I got a warning after running the <scan image for restore> saying "unable to scan (internal error)"
I rang Apple support who suggested formatting a partition as MAC OS extended (journalling) and choose to save the image as "read/write'. The image process stopped writing at about 200GB and then the file size jumped to 499GB (ie the size of the HD). But the process did nothing for about an hour so I foce quit disk utility (as suggested by apple support)
My current attempt was to format the external drive again; this time with a 400GB Mac OS extended (journal) format; plus a 100GB ExFAT format partition. The new image was created after about 2.5hrs with a compressed size of 149GB. However, after running the "scan image for restore" facility I got the warning message "unable to scan filename " (internal error). The process was scanning the image file according to the progress bar - this took about hour - thus the warning is a puzzle.
If anyone can say more about this error I would really appreciate knowing tips for using disk utility. The screen grab is below.
"unable to scan filename " (internal error)
    thanks

Thanks for a quick reply <baltwo>. You’ve answered that it is not a fake message!
fyi: I thought that I would use my external Buffalo for two purposes; namely the smaller ExFAT partition for copying stuff to my win7 netbook. The larger partition was to be used as my imac image of SL. So this was my first attempt at using disk utility - the idea being to hold an image backup at another location. Plus I now have the Lion thumbdrive ready to upgrade from SL and so being cautious wanted to have a SL image backup
Anyway I followed the apple instructions using my mac 10.6.3 install DVD but it would appear from other discussions that <unable to scan (internal error)> is not unique to me.
I’ll get back to apple telephone support for further advice.
I would though be grateful for an “idiots’ guide to making an image backup of my internal HD that runs SL 10.6.8
eg should I have just one partition on the external USB drive? format it as Mac OS extended? create the image as compressed or read/write? Basically I’ll do whatever will work!!
    thanks again

  • Scan Image for Restore?

I created a disk image last night to prepare for my upgrade to Snow Leopard and then this morning moved to the final step of "Scan Image for Restore" and I was wondering if anyone had any insights into how long this would take. It's been running for about an hour now and the progress bar doesn't show any progress, just shows the fast moving blue hashes in the bar. Is this normal, or is it possibly hung up on something? Note, the light on my external drive continues to blink, which makes me think it is doing something, just not sure if it is progressing and this just takes several hours, or if something is wrong. Any help is appreciated.

It can take a very long time, depending on size of the Image, and even slower via USB.
I think a much faster, better, more useful method is to clone your drive, then you'll have a bootable version of exactly what you have now.

  • Scan Image For Restore Question...

So I made a backup image of my HD.
After running "Scan Image For Restore" this is what showed up in console...
    Mar 16 17:15:38 localhost authexec: executing /usr/sbin/asr

Mar 16 17:36:46 localhost kernel: jnl: writejournalheader: error writing the journal header!
    Does that look right?
Obviously there was an error writing the journal header because it was read only correct? What about the "strategy err"? - Is that how the log's suppose to look after running "Scan Image For Restore"?
    Thanks in advance folks!

  • Scanning image for restore

How does one scan or imagescan a diskimage for Restore in Disk Utility?
    Hans

Thanks for your reply, Kappy. Unfortunately that didn't work. I'm trying to clone computers. Disk Utilities doesn't let me drag the mounted disk image to the source field.
The cloning, however, works great with Carbon Copy Cloner. I mount the disk image as you suggested, then select it as a source and the HD i want to clone as the target.
I'm doing all this with an external firewire drive. I boot from the external drive which has the disk image of the source computer on it. Then I tried to use Disk Utility as you suggested, but it didn't work. So I used CCC.
    Thanks for your help.

  • I upgraded my internal Boot Drive, used Disk Utility to image and restore..

...Time Machine still recognizes my external drive as the backup disk, and I can still go back in time to bring something back using it.
The problem is that, time machine thinks it needs to backup everything that is on my restored internal drive. So what I have now is this--
Full Backup from original Leopard launch
    Incremental Backups
Full Backup (in progress now) since imaging my old internal drive to a new one.
My question: how can I turn what is happening now (a full backup of the present), into an incremental backup (where it should leave off, since it is an image of the same drive)?

Unfortunately, nobody can tell you what you're likely to be able to restore. You can only try. See Recovering deleted files for some suggestions.
The encrypted sparse bundles are the big problem. If all the individual "bands" of the sparse bundle are still intact, you should be able to recover them, although if the recovery software is unable to recover the directory structure, I imagine it may be difficult to piece them back together.
However, if even a few bytes of a single band file have been overwritten, the entire sparse bundle is ruined. You'll never get it open again. A recovery service is not likely to be of any help in that case.
BTW, you definitely need to be posting in the Snow Leopard forum, as there are some fairly significant differences between Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion. You risk getting answers that make assumptions on the system you are using, and that won't apply to you.

  • DISK UTILITY -- "New Image" problems

Maybe I don't get how this works. I used an external USB drive to back up my MacBook Pro, making an image un=sing Disk Utility "New Image." THis seems to have worked fine. When I attach the external drive and double click on the DMG file it open and I seem to have access to all contents.
Today I tried to make a second "New Image" on the same drive of my iMac24" and everything runs and makes a DMG file, but when I click on this one I get a msg saying the disk image "couldn't be opened" with the reason given being "no mountable file systems."
Does this make perfect sense to somebody?
Have I completely misunderstood the use and practice of the "new image" in Disk Utility?
    Thanks.

Hey. If you want to make a DMG image of your iMac, you will need to boot off the install DVD and use Disk Utility from the DVD. To create the DMG is the same process: Select the "Macintosh HD" icon on the left hand side list of Disk Utility, click the "New Image" button, leave "Image Format" as "Compressed" and its up to you for Encryption, I always leave it as "None".
Select to save your DMG image on the external hard drive and click save. Once the image is done, click on "Image" on the menu bar and click on "Scan Image for Restore...".
    That's it!
    Good luck

  • Asr fails to scan DMG for restore

    Hi everyone,
I have an Applescript droplet that customizes an app based on the contents you drop on it, and send off some parameters to a shell script for packaging into a dmg, etc. The problem I have is that once I create the dmg and place items inside it, I am unable to scan it for restore, which is essential to distributing the new customized app. The code for my shell script is below:
    #!/bin/sh
    *cd /Volumes/Work/ProdIngestWorkspace*
    *hdiutil create -size 100m ProductIngest.dmg -fs HFS+J*
    *hdiutil mount ProductIngest.dmg*
    *mv /Volumes/Work/ProdIngestWorkspace/M3TAFormsDesktop.app /Volumes/Work/ProdIngestWorkspace/$3\ Ingest.app*
    *cd /Volumes/untitled*
    *mkdir -p Applications*
    *cp -r /Volumes/Work/ProdIngestWorkspace/$3\ Ingest.app /Volumes/untitled/Applications*
    *mv /Volumes/Work/ProdIngestWorkspace/ProductIngest.dmg /Volumes/Work/ProdIngestWorkspace/CompletedDMGs/$3Ingest$2.dmg*
    *sleep 60*
    *diskutil unmount /Volumes/untitled*
    *sleep 60*
    *hdiutil convert /Volumes/Work/ProdIngestWorkspace/CompletedDMGs/$3Ingest$2.dmg -format UDRO -o $3Ingest$2*
    *sleep 60*
    *asr imagescan --source /Volumes/Work/ProdIngestWorkspace/CompletedDMGs/$3Ingest$2.dmg*
diskutil is unable to unmount untitled, it keeps saying the resource is busy., so hdiutil can't convert it to read-only, and then asr can't scan it. However if I manually unmount it then try to scan it in Disk Utility, I get an error that the dmg is an invalid argument. What gives?
    TIA,
    Andrew

And we have something strange: from other machine the ping is ok (to CAM server) but when we submit a https://CAM_server_IP:6789 through browser it shows "Page cannot be found" error. The only way to get the CAM Web GUI is put in the CAM's server Web Browser https://localhost:6789 . Doesnt work if we use the IP address of CAM server "Page cannot be found" error. Only "localhost" works. What we have been doing to get the CAM Web GUI is to export the CAM's server $DISPLAY to another Solaris server and opening CAM's server Mozilla and typing with "localhost:6789".
    Hi Bastian52
Do you have a correct DNS record for your CAM host ? Can you do a nslookup and resolve your management host ok ?

  • I have an external hard drive that shows up in disk utility but Verify and Restore are greyed out.

I have an external hard drive that shows up in disk utility but Verify and Restore are greyed out. I am trying to determine what is wrong with the drive.
I need the data on the drive and it won't show up in Disk Warrior. I have tried different Mac's and different USB cords only to find the same outcome. When selected in Disk Utility the information read as such...
Disk Description : WD Elements 1023 Media                      Total Capacity : 500.11 GB (500,105,740,288 Bytes)
Connection Bus : USB                                                               Write Status : Read/Write
Connection Type : External                                                     S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
USB Serial Number : 575837314135304D36373132        Partition Map Scheme : Unformatted
As the drive shows in Disk Utility there must be some life left in it surely. There is a possibilty that the physical connection between the USB cord and the external drive is damaged but since the drive shows up I believe it's unlikely... before I give it to the pro's is there anything else I can do to diagnose the issue?

    Hello,
I have just experienced the same thing!
Although my external drive shows in Disk Utility, it does not show in Finder.
And the Verify/Repair buttons are also greyed out.
Also, although the drive is 2TB. DU shows it as having Total Capacity of only 4.14GB! (Which should be the Free Space).
I was wondering if you solved your problem, & if so, would you share your solution.
I´m afraid to Erase in case I lose all my Data on the drive.
Thanks in advance for your reply!

  • Disk image for restore won't verify

Hi - I'm preparing to send my G4 Pbook (10.4.11) for repair.
It was recommended that I make a disk image of the HD "just in case".
So I booted from the original install disc (10.3), launched Disk Util and made a new image on an external drive. Read only, not compressed. About 3 hours later I had a DI and decided to "verify" it. It would not. So I rebooted from the normal system and tried to mount the new DI. It would not and gave a message "the DMG is faulty and it may damage your hard drive if you mount it". So I trashed it, emptied the trash and used DU to erase that external drive in ready for the next try.
DU Help files are short and pretty clear. What did I do wrong? Can someone please give me a procedure I can succeed with?
    TIA
    d2

Don't make a disc image. You cannot boot from one and they can be finicky. They are not what you want. Instead you want to clone your hard drive to an external Firewire hard drive. It's done as follows:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the drive to which you will restore or backup.
Source means the drive you are restoring from or backing up.

  • Disk Utility: Create image fails with input/output error

Starting to create an image and saving it into an external hard drive (MacOS extended Journaled).
It starts after less than 60 secs it comes out with an error : Failed to create the image (input/output error)

If you don't mind I'd like to discourage you from backing up a drive onto a disc image file no matter where you plan to save it. Disc image files can be very problematical when it comes to trying to restore the backup. Furthermore, you cannot boot from a disc image. If the disc image file becomes corrupted then you have no backup.
I would like to propose that you think about a better way to backup your drive. You can clone the drive to your backup drive. It's easy to do using Disk Utility's Restore feature. A clone backup is not only bootable but you have direct access to all the files on the backup.
In order to make a bootable clone open Disk Utility. Select Disk Utility Help from the Help menu. Search for +duplicating a disk+. Click on "Duplicating a disk" at the top of the list of articles. Follow the directions.

  • Disk Utility - Create Image Fails

    Hello all -
I'm trying to make an image of one of my hard drives as a back up. I've followed the instructions in Disk Utility help, but when I click "Save" to try to create the image I get a failure message "Unable to create <Disk Name>. (Resource Busy)".
I've tried saving to the destination with a new folder, that did not solve the problem. No other applications are running and both the source and destination disks are mounted and appearing on my desktop. The source is a USB connected drive, destination is a firewire drive, and I can read and write to both the source and destination disks.
Anyone have any idea what this failure message means and how to correct the problem? Thanks - Randy
