Disk Volume Needs to be repaired... corrupt files..

Hi,
I am using a macbook pro with the latest version of os x 10.6.2
I went on utilities, Disk utilities to verify the disk. After It has been verified..it generated those two message indicating
" The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired."
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
If you could provide me with the procedures to how to boot up from the disk, and get it fix.
it will be greatly appreciated thank you

Mac 101:
Insert your OS installer disk. Re boot while holding down the 'c' key until you see the cog wheel then release. Select your language. From the Utilities menu select Disk Utility and select your hard drive from the left side column. Then click on Repair Disk. If DU cannot repair the disk you will need a stronger disk repair utility like DiskWarrior.

  • Volume needs to be repaired

I just recently had a new hard drive and a logic board put in.
I ran ONYX for the first time today and am getting a "volume needs to be repaired" message.
What causes the volume to need to be repaired? And why already?

    TuckerdogAVL wrote:
The steps also don't address one knowing that the volume needs repair, hence running "Onyx"
We can only speculate it had to do with a hardware issue with your old logicboard.
Onyx isn't a backup program. It's a clean up utility.
It has initial "checks" that also can be performed with Disk Utility, likely the developer of OnyX saw a need to check a users drive before performing cleaning and maintenance aspects.
Some folks in the Apple community feel these aren't ever necessary and there isn't a reason to do "routine maintenance."
In the past there was some performance issues if certain maintenance wasn't performed because Unix was designed to run it's tasks during the middle of the night, so people had to do them manually to regain their performance. OnyX, Cocktail, Yasi and other programs sprang up to address the problem.
However Apple addressed the cause in later OS X versions and it's not a issue anymore for anyone to worry about.
But it did take considerable time to get everyone to relax and not fret over having to do any routine maintenance, people were doing more harm than good.
Now I recommend OnyX as a troubleshooting technique, not a maintenance technique anymore because Mac's don't require any routine maintenance.
Because OnyX does have those initial checks and then it does allow cleaning of cache files which can become corrupt and cause unexplained issues.
Since it's all nicely wrapped in one neat package, it's like flushing one's system and allowing it rebuild which can cure strange behavior, browser cache poisoning for instance.
    https://www.networkworld.com/news/2010/020310-black-hat-wi-fi-attackers.html
And before anyone says "that issue has been addressed" keep in mind there are always new attacks occurring, caches get corrupt on their own, so sometimes it's just easier to flush out all the caches and let them rebuild again.
Since OnyX doesn't hurt anything, and it may cure the problem, there is nothing wrong in trying, if the initial checks show a bigger issue at fault like the "this volume needs repair" then that's right in the users face to report back here so we can recommend further action.
Why does this message show up? ... but "why" is elusive.
Most people don't know why without detailed examination of the hardware, so they can't answer your question.
Only we can "guess" that it had something to do with your logicboard being replaced.
Repair the drive and if it occurs again, you likely have a failing drive, replace it.

  • Power PC G5 -,"The volume%@needs to be repaired."1)

Hi folks, turned on our G5 this morning to be met with our usual screen saver, but no Dock, no hard drive on the desktop, no apple logo no finder in the top left corner and everything to the right of that apart from spotlight showing. Restarted the computer holding down the shift key with everything seeming as normal now. Restarted again and every thing worked and looked normal, so I went into Disc Utility to verify the disk but this message appeared before end of verifying -

  • "HFS VOLUME NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED"

Since yesterday, my computer has turned off unexpectedly 5 times...
when running the Utility disx app... it says the "HFS VOLUME NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED"...
I've used the repair button to do it, and eventhough it repaired something, it didn't really repair the HFS vol... 'cause it keeps giving me the same error, over and over again...
    HOW CAN I REPAIR IT?
WHAT EXACTLY IS THE HFS VOL?
    HOW DOES IT BREAK?
    PLEASE HEEEEEEELP

    Hi majjo84;
I would not recommend that you reinstall the operating system. I don't think it is necessary. Also if you are short of free space it will fail unless you do the reinstall using Erase & Install instead of Archive & Install. If you do the E&I, you will lose everything. So you must make sure you have a good backup before you even think about the reinstall.
I think that clean the disk be removing things you don't need is the way to go.

This is a directory issue that Disk Utility cannot fix. Although it manifests itself as a software issue sometimes it may be hardware based. See DiskUtility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing avolume http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1901?viewlocale=en_US". You can try using a utility like TechTool Pro, Drive Genius or Disk Warrior to repair and replace the directory. Another option would be to use the Archive and Install feature to reinstall. If the problem returns after correction you may have a failing or failed HDD.

  • Hard Drive Volume Needs to be Repaired - Please help!

I actually posted this question before, so if you happen to read this for the second time, I do apologize for that. The reason I am posting again is because I couldn't solve the problem, and when I called Apple care today, they asked me to extend my Applecare to 3 years first or pay a one-time $49.99 fee (I bought my mbp in May). I understand this process, but right now I do not have this budget so I need to find help here. I really appreciate all your help in advance.
I ran Disk Utility the other day, and while verifying and repairing the "Disk permissions" seemed to work okay, when I clicked "Verify Disk," a pop-up windon said (I don't quite understand what the following message means):
    First Aid failed
Disk Utility stopped verifying “Macintosh HD” because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit
....and the disk utility screen showed:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid node structure
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
However the "Repair Disk" buttom is faded grey and inactive, so I couldn't repair the HD volume right away. I tried to insert the Installtion CD and started up the computer by pressing down "c" in order to start up and repair the HD using the CD. However, even though I was finally able to see the active "Repair Disk" buttom in the "install mode" with the CD inserted, when I clicked the repair buttom, it still showed the exact same message as I mentioned before (the bold texts). I then guess I couldn't repair the volume HD this way either.
The other thing I don't understand is I actually ran the Apple Hardware Test using the installation CD too, but after both normal and extended check, it said my HD is fine - there's no problem found. So I really don't know what is causing the Disk Utility message and the HD volume failure.
Could someone give me sugesstions what to do to fix the problem? I really really appreicate all kind of assistance! Thank you very much!

Claire, the message you received when you ran Disk Utility's disk repair routine from the Installation Disc 1 simply means that there are problems with your drive that Disk Utility can't fix.
It's possible (but not certain) that the current full version of Tech Tools Pro <http://www.micromat.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=164&Itemid=8 5> could repair your hard drive. But you would have to buy the application.
For no-cost approaches here are two suggestions:
1 It's possible (but not likely) that simply doing an Archive & Install from your Installation Disc 1 might fix the problem. If you don't have a convenient way to back up all your data to an external drive or DVD, it may be worth a try.
2 A complete erase (using the "zero" option in Disk Utility), followed by installation of the OS from your Installation Disc 1 should get the drive back in good shape (as it passed Hardware Test). This will of course erase all your applications and data files, so they should first be backed up somehow.
    Good luck.

  • Need Help Opening a Corrupted File in MS Office Word 2007.

I use Microsoft Office Word 2007. I need help in opening a corrupted file. I tried to open but am getting messages: "cannot be opened", "unreadable content", "do you want to recover contents?" "Do you want to search
    for a converter?"
Anyone have any ideas on how I can get this file to open? :/
    Thank you,

    From Microsoft Documentation:-
If a file has been damaged and you cannot open it by normal means, you may be able to recover its content by using the Open and Repair
    feature.
    Click the
    Microsoft Office Button
Browse to the file that you want to recover, and click it (do not double-click it).
Click the arrow next to the
Open button, and then click Open and Repair.

  • InDesign - need a "Fix my Corrupted File" Upload Service

There are frequently posts on the forum for people who have corrupted INDD files. This means lost work and frustrated InDesign users.
The Indesign team should offer a "Fix my File" upload link to its customers.
For each corrupted file, you will help a customer, and in the process, hopefully improve the overall stability of the product (which has issues) and benefit everyone...
Adobe: If you are afraid that you will be swamped with requests to "Fix my File", then you should probably just get out of the SW business now...

Zak Williamson wrote: "If the documents are fundamentally corrupt in some way, theres no way to repair them." and then later "As I mentioned to Casey, it's rarely possible to repair a truly corrupt document"
I definitely don't want this to sound like a flame or a whine, but I find that statement quite flabbergasting. Somebody at Adobe must understand the format of an InDesign file well enough to be able to edit out the specific element that is causing InDesign to complain about the document. I do file repair for another company (www.qsatoolworks.com) whose file format is probably more complex than an InDesign file. In over 10 years I've only had 1 or 2 files I could not repair at least to the point of recovering the textual data.
What led me to this forum is that a customer contacted me to help them recover an InDesign file. They just migrated from a PowerMac G4 with CS2 to a Mac Pro with CS3 and a few of their files won't open. ("ID may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application.")
We have tried them on another Mac with CS2, and they won't open there either. "Something" must have gone wrong when the files were transferred to the new Mac.
(Naturally, the old hard drive has already been reformatted.)
Knowing what I do about file formats (but understanding that my knowledge is nearly worthless in an InDesign file) I have to assume an InDesign file contains an object map with pointers to the various objects in the document. The idea of telling the customer "your 32 page booklet is lost" when the problem could simply be a screwed up pointer is horrifying to me.
Here at QSA ToolWorks we charge $120/hour for recovery service, success or failure. We've saved lots of people from their own recklessness, and created a passionate user base in the process. We've made our product more reliable (and fixed some bugs) based on the knowledge gained through file repair; Adobe could do the same, but if they don't want to provide such a service, perhaps they should consider training third parties to do it.
I'd like to address one other comment above. Harbs wrote "I've been lead to believe that Adobe has utilities (which they use internally) to analyze and possibly fix corrupted files." Of course, I don't know whether Adobe has such utilities, but I suspect they don't. Because I can do Helix database repairs, people likewise assume I have "special utilities" that can fix corrupted files. (We've even been accused of keeping them secret so we can use file repair as a source of revenue!) I don't. What I do have is a deep understanding of the file format. Beyond that, a file editor and a couple of AppleScripts I wrote to display the object fields in a human-readable format are all the 'special' tools I have. If Adobe has any sort of tools for analyzing files, I suspect they are much the same. In other words, without extensive internal knowledge, they are worthless.

Started verify/repair permissions on disk0s2 Silver Book
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired
Anyone know what that means? Is there a problem I should be concerned about?
    Thanks!

I'm not sure, but this issue has been around for a very long time. Looks like 5 years at least:
Disk Utility Warning: SUID file xxx has been modified, will not be repaired
Apple has a document on it that says you can ignore them:
Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore - Apple Support
It would be nice if this "warning" didn't occur if it wasn't a problem, since it's still generating concern 5 years on

  • Did a backup & erased hard disk - Now need to recover the .dmg file? How?

Hi there.... thanks for your help!
I used Carbon Copy Cloner (found on versiontracker.com) to make a complete .dmg backup of an entire Powerbook G4. I copied the 28GB .dmg file via ethernet to my Time Capsule and that worked just fine.
I did a 7-pass secure erase on a the PB and have booted up from Tiger OS discs, but cannot find a way to access the Time Capsule to restore the machine.
    How do I do this??
    Thanks again!
    DL

I think I figured it out!
I restarted the Powerbook with a Firewire 400 cable attached, I realized that I could select "T" on the keyboard and make it a target drive. I mounted it on my machine, which is connected via ethernet to my Time Capsule (Aiport is much too slow...). From my computer, I went to Disc Utility and restored the .dmg file from the Time Capsule to the connected Powerbook.
    It seems to be working....

  • Hard Drive Volume Needs Repair...........Please Help

    My Power/PC G4 with dual 1.25g processors with OS 10.4.11, is running very slow. I get the spinning beach ball whenever it tries to load anything from disk. I used disk utility to verify the hard drive. I got the following message;
    Volume Header needs minor repair
The Volume needs to be repaired
    1HFS Volume Checked
    Volume needs repair.
    I followed the instructions in Disk Utility to start my computer from my OS 10 install disk. The Disk Utility instructions gave the following instructions;
    1. Insert OS 10 Disk
    2. Hold down option key and start computer
    3. Select Install and click arrow
    4. Open Disk Utility
    5. click install
    6. open disk utility and click to repair
I followed the above but once I did step 3, I was on my way to do a new install.
Followed everything asked for on the screen, the next click was to start install.
Never once anywhere did I have the option for #4 above (open disk utility). I dont know what I am doing, just following directions. I aborted the operation as I did not want to clobber my installed 10.4.11.
Please tell me what I did wrong or how to get Disk Utility running from my OS10
install disk so I can run disk utility repair.
    Thanks

Click here and follow the instructions. If there's no Disk Utility option in the Installer menu, use fsck.

  • How to repair xls file? Microsoft Excel report me what file is not Excel format.

I need help again(( i have .xls file that cannot be opened by Excel. It reports that this file is not excel format. Can i recover it?

When an Excel file is corrupted, then you can try several methods to recover it:
    1. First of all, you can try to repair the file manually in Excel, as follows:
    (1) On the File menu, click Open.
    (2) In the Open dialog box, select the file you want to open, and click the arrow next to the Open button.
    (3) Click Open and Repair, and then choose which method you want to use to recover your workbook.
You may find more information about this at:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/repairing-corrupted-files-in-excel-HA001034656.aspx (for Excel 2003)
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/repairing-a-corrupted-workbook-HA010097017.aspx?CTT=1 (for Excel 2007)

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/repair-a-corrupted-workbook-HA102749554.aspx?CTT=1 (for Excel 2013)
    2. Second, since Excel 2003, it provides a "Document Recovery" mechanism so that when Excel is shutdown abnormally, the Excel file being edited will be recovered when Excel is launched next time, which makes the file recovery possible.
    See below:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/recover-your-office-files-HP010354299.aspx?CTT=1
    for more detailed information.
    3. If 1 and 2 does not work, then you may try third-party tools such as DataNumen Excel Repair at
    http://www.datanumen.com/excel-repair/
It provides a free demo version so that you can try to see if the data you want can be recovered or not.
    Good luck!
