Display blown up

Hi all, I seem to have turned on the magnification that has the desktop blown up, and can't get it back to normal, i.e. you don't have to go up/down or left/right to see all of the desktop.

Thanks for looking, I found the answer on another post on page 4-5.

  • Blown 23" Cinema Display -- main board? or Inverter?

I bought an Apple OEM Nvidia Geforce 3 for my G4 Cube, and the idea was that it should power my 23" Cinema Display (clear). But the monitor became blown when I connected it to an incompatible video card -- although the power light comes ON, the screen fails to illuminate.
I'm hoping that someone can contribute to a diagnosis of my Display's problem. Here is the situation:
The online Authorized Reseller "The Mac Support Store" sells various parts for this monitor. There appear to be two choices:
    1) The main board for the 23" Cinema Display is offered here:
    http://www.macsupportstore.com/product.asp?pf_id=922%2D5582
    and...
    2) the inverter board is offered here:
    http://www.macsupportstore.com/product.asp?pf_id=922%2D5581
But which one should I buy?
I realize this is pretty lame, inviting a stranger to diagnose a monitor he's not seen, but... you never know. Maybe you know what you're talking about. You probably know more about it than I do.
Is there a good reason for suspecting that the blown Display is the main board? Or the inverter board?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I don't know whether this will be of help but last year I started having all sorts of problems with my 23" Cinema Display. I replaced the power supply 'brick' - but still had problems (blank screen etc) - read lots about issues with these displays. I was running 10.4.11 - In the end I tried re-installing the system on another drive up to 10.4.8 - and it's worked fine ever since (it also cured a number of other weird problems) - ok, so I can't get the latest itunes software - but at least I have a screen that works. It seems that anything above 10.4.8 causes problems on my G5 Dual Power PC.

  • Can I tell iphoto not to display pixelated blown up thumbnails first?

I find it quite frustrating that when you double click on a thumbnail to see it full-screen, while iphoto is loading the full-rez image it displays a pixelated blown-up thumbnail for a second or two. I would much rather just wait the second or two for the full resolution image without having to look at the terrible pixelated image. Is there a way to change that behavior?
Better yet, is there a way to increase the resolution of the actual thumbnail files? (I don't mean just the size it displays at, b/c bringing that up too high just slows iphoto thumbnail view to a crawl.)
    Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The answer to both questions is no. About the only way to reduce the effect would be to get a faster Mac and that's reasonable (unless you're looking for an excuse to buy that new Mac). I just that that time to blick a couple of times to keep the old eyeballs moist and don't even notice the effect.;)
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Display USB ports blown, please please help!

Please try and offer some type of suggestion....
i got a second Apple Cinema display the other day. The white, plastic kind.
so, now i have two. yay!
except when i plugged in the new/ second display into my powermac G5, it immediatley put the cpu to sleep...hmmm
woke it up, and the display was working fine.
except the USB ports didn't work anymore...
i needed the USB ports though for my mouse and keyboard. so, i plug my original apple cinema display in again, works great
except ....the USB ports on that display are now not working either!!
    ARRRGHHH
So, this free new display either..
    - blew out the usb ports on TWO displays, which makes no sense.
    - plugging in the second display changed a setting in the Mac that allows the USB ports on the display to work....
    no clue
    i've restarted
    unpluged and replugged both displays
    click 'detect display'
    no effect
Please try and offer me a suggestion on this!
otherwise I guess it's off to the shop to get a USB hub (the usb ports on my Powermac still work fine)

  • I need help with working with old newspaper photos. The photos need to be blown up and displayed on a traveling exhibit. Is there any training available for this?

The photos are from newspapers going back to the early 1900s and they are now on microfilm. I can get them digitized at 600dpi but that still doesn't make them ready for placement on a large display. Besides Adobe help I use Lynda.com but I can't find anything dealing with this very specific topic. Anyone have an idea of a training program that deals with this subject?

Thinking back to when I've seen displays of newsprint that's been greatly magnified, being able to see the halftone screen pattern seems important.  It gives the display a look of authenticity.
You say the library can scan at 600 ppi.  If that's 600 ppi of a greatly reduced image on a piece of microfiche, it may not give you the resolution you're looking for, and it's entirely possible that getting a quality optical print then scanning it would give you better.
I don't see how you can plan how to proceed in anything like specific detail if you don't have an image that represents what you're really going to be starting with in detail.  Perhaps getting one scan might be a good idea.
After that, you just need to figure out what ppi your final overall panel design is going to be at, and upsample the newspaper clippings to match, so that they're the size you need them to be.

  • Using LCD TV as Display

I have a 12-inch iBook G4, and I wanted to use my LCD screen as my display. I bought a Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter, when I connected it up the picture looked grainy. It looks like it wasn't scaled up just blown up (if you understand that). I can understand this because the computer isn't really sending a digital signal, just a video output signal (i don't think that makes any sense either). Is there any adapter that will make it look just as good as on my computer, or a setting i can change. Thanks in advance!

The problem is the way the iBooks are designed to output a secondary video signal. In most computers, attaching a secondary monitor gives you the option to either mirror your first display (ie, a copy) or extend your desktop (giving you twice the space for, say, icons).
iBooks, on the other hand, only have the ability to mirror. The ability to extend your desktop to the external monitor has been disabled in the firmware. This means that your iBook, essentially, sends the *exact same* video signal to both screens. What you see on your laptop screen is what you get on the LCD. Including resolution.
If I recall correctly, you can scale that image down, but not up. The grainy image your describing is the signal being, as you said, blown up by the monitor itself.
Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do about this. There are ways of hacking this problem, but none of them are supported by Apple.

  • HT4108 Unable to read a movie from my iPad to an external display

    Hi everyone,
I fear the worst here. I downloaded a TV show from iTunes and watched it fine on my external display (a full blown HD tv). Then I downloaded an HD movie from the iTunes store but my iPad2 says it's unable to play protected content. What gives ???
Is there a work-around to this or does my gut-feeling tell me Apple has restricted the use of an external display for some commercial reason ?
What's the point of buying full HD content if you can't watch it on full HD gear ?
Thanks for your thoughts on this !

    try this:

This helped meRe: not copied to iPad because you are not authorized for it on this computer

One workarwound is to do the following:
    1. Remove the digital content from iTunes (but keep the files)
    2. Rename all .m4v files to .mp4 files
    3. Add the files back to iTunes
This seems to fix the problem for me
    Hope this helps

  • Using Element 31" LCD TV as display

I have a 2008 macbookpro15 with the big video output plug on the upper right side as you face the computer. In the past I have used it successfully with my 2008 vintage 46" samsung to display photos stored in iphoto. (mac output to HDMI input). now with this new TV I get the MAC screen turning opaque gray blue, a line scrolling up the screen and then a message in 5 languages saying I have to restart.meanwhile the TV screen says "no input". when I push the power button it will not restart and the only option is to hold the power button down for a minute and then it shuts off. everything else (DISH DVR & Panasonic blue ray) works with either HDMI inpute just fine. Don't suggest I go to preferences because once it's hooked up, it's locked up in the warning message mode. thanks.

The problem is the way the iBooks are designed to output a secondary video signal. In most computers, attaching a secondary monitor gives you the option to either mirror your first display (ie, a copy) or extend your desktop (giving you twice the space for, say, icons).

  • No preview displayed in Aperture and Preview after Lion "upgrade"

    Hi everyone,
something (well, maybe many things) has been blown by Lion...I'm only just trying to figure out what exactly is.
Generally the system performs well but I have a big issue with previews within Aperture 3 and in Preview/Quicklook itself.
I'm testing Lion onto a late 2009 unibody macbookpro 13", 2.0 ghz, 8gb Ram; Aperture library is managed, around 100gb, all files are from Canon 30D and 350D, plus some jpegs and videos from a Powershot A620 (I didn't test the videos imported in Aperture yet, in SnowLeopard everything was fine).
In Aperture 3 (I have upgraded to 3.1.3 before installing Lion) my Canon 30D files are displayed correctly both in browser and viewer...Canon 350D files (raw images) aren't...well, the small thumbnail in the browser view is looking fine but when I double click to display the large image..it suddenly disappear! gray or black background, no image at all...back to browser view and the small thumbnail correctly display the image.
So i tried to regenerate the preview...nothing, same behaviour...if I press P for quick preview nothing is displayed, I get nothing even if I press M for master image.
Ok, I said...let's try this...I decide to export a photo, as master, onto the desktop...fine, the image icon is good, correctly displaying the image thumbnail...if I select it and press the spacebar i obtain ...absolutely nothing,a gray window that should be my image.
This happens also for the 30D files when I export them ...within Aperture they're good.
I also tried to export a version (jpeg)...all I obtain is a totally black jpeg.
Seems that Preview is not working anymore or uncapable to display any raw format, only jpegs are correctly displayed, I mean original jpeg shot.
I went through all the basic library maintenance for Aperture, repaired system permission before and after Lion installation...nothing changes.
Anyone experiencing a similar behaviour under Lion? Is Preview not working only in my system? Any suggestion?
I'm trying to find something to fix this...I have Time machine backups, Aperture vault backups so reverting back to SL is only a matter of patience and time...but I would like to stick with Lion and keep testing.
Any help or suggestion will be appreciated...I'm also searching for similiar behaviour (mostly for the problem with Preview) in the Lion OSX forum, this is heavily affecting Aperture.
    Best regards,
    Alberto

I found a solution that worked for me. Seems like my firewall did not accept the afp connection permissions anymore after installing lion... Since everything worked well turning off the firewall.
So if you don't want to keep your firewall disactivated here is what worked for me:
    - Leave your firewall activated.
    - Turn OFF afp file sharing in the sistem prefs
    - Restart your Machine
    - Turn ON afp file sharing
    - You should now get a message if you want to accept afp connections...
    - click YES
Thats it... Everything fine on my network now.

  • Displaying a user logo in a Crystal Report dynamically at run time

Using Visual Studio 2010, CR for VS 2010 on a Win 7 64 bit dev machine.  The software app that I'm creating is a full Windows application (not for the web).  Compiling my app for .NET 4.0.
Actually, in January, 2012, we purchased the CR 2011 full version and subsequently installed this version for use within the development environment (VS 2010).  References that I use show (for example) CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine version 13.0.2.
I have hundreds of hours of experience using Crystal Reports within VB, dating back to VB 6 and CR 8.5.  In a software app that I am currently writing, (where I am using VB in VS 2010 and CR 13.0.2), the Graphic Location formula within a picture "placeholder" is not working.  I am using a parameter called pUserLogo to set the path to the graphic location at runtime, but to no avail.  The picture that I'm using as a placeholder is not changing at runtime.
I have scoured the internet for solutions to this problem.  I have also attempted to upgrade both the CR for VS 2010 (a.k.a. CR developer version) as well as the CR runtimes (both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions), but this has not helped.  The picture is never replaced at runtime while working within the IDE (i.e. running the app from VS, nor after compiling and then running as a full-blown application).  I have also tested this on another development machine.
I eventually gave up trying to use the Graphic Location formula method, and instead went with a method that uses a DataSet within a DataTable to set the image (of an image column) as posted online.  This method actually works within the IDE.  However, if I then install my app to another PC (Win 7 64 bit as well), the CR crashes the app.  After extensive searching online, I found that referencing a DataSet in VS 2010 inside a CR, led to many other issues, such as having to use the 'useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy=true' statement in app.config.
Further, I read that using a DataSet within CR in VS 2010 meant that you had to compile for .NET 3.5, rather than 4.0.
Eventually, I created restore points on both PC's and then upgraded everything to 13.0.6.  But this did not help either method.
All I am trying to do is 1) let the user of my app select an image before the report is created, and then 2) display that image on the report.  This particular report doesn't even need to reference any database, as all of the numbers that I'm displaying in the report are simply parameters that I update during the report's creation.  It is a very simple, straight-forward report.
I would be happy to setup a GotoMeeting so that someone at support could see what is happening and could also review the code.  There are many more details, such as what errors I've encountered along the way, and what web sites I've been to in researching these issues, but I will leave that for continued discussion.
    Regards,
    Dominic

An older discussion on this issue can be found at:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2548723/unable-to-programically-set-graphic-location-in-crystal-report
Since I couldn't get this method to work, I then tried the method as described here:
    http://adf.ly/91637/banner/aspalliance.com/1097_Importing_Dynamic_Images_to_the_Crystal_Report_without_Database_Overhead_using_Visual_Studio_2005.all
The second method, which uses a DataSet within a DataTable as described in the above link, does work, and it correctly displays the image, but only in the IDE.  When tested on a "client" machine, opening the report causes my app to crash, with no exception or error message except for the "...has caused the application to stop working".  Previously, before introducing said DataSet into the report, the report loads and displays fine on my client machine.
Further research led me to these two threads concerning the usage of the crdb_adoplus.dll which is necessary when using a DataSet in VS 2010 with CR.  It seems that the folder dotnet1 is not accessible, and thus there are workarounds for this issue.  See these two threads, below:
    http://scn.sap.com/thread/1802638
    http://scn.sap.com/thread/1665437
Again, I followed the recommendations that I needed to set the Startup flag 'useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy=true' in app.config.  However, the workaround where I should target .NET 3.5 instead of .NET 4.0 is not reallly an acceptable option to me (and I don't know if it will work, anyway).
So my question remains; Can anyone please tell me if A) They have any issues using the "picture placeholder/formula" method for loading a picture at runtime, and/or B) If there is a fix for the DataSet issues apparently inherent in using VS 2010 with a Crystal Report?
Thanks in advance, for your reply.
    Regards,
    Dominic

  • Satellite Pro A100 (PSAACE) - Display is not working

    Hi all,
Got a problem that's confused me.
A few weeks ago my very old Sat Pro a100 (PSAACE) started to refuse to display anything on the screen.
This is from boot, i.e I press the power button from cold, the system whirls and fan goes both nothing appears on the screen.
I left the laptop alone and noticed it popped up on my network, so I remote desktop connected in and everything was working, but still no display on the actually laptop.
Thinking it might be a wierd setup I started Pressing Fn + F5 to swap between displays, at this point I managed to get a display back on the laptop screen.
However on next boot it did the same, this went on for a few days with me pressing Fn+F5 to get a display.
Then the Fn+F5 stopped working, I could still remote desktop in and use the laptop but I couldn't get anything to display.
In windows the ATI Mobility 1400 had disappeared from Device Manager.
I figured the VGA controller board had blown so ordered a new one.
I have now fitted this, and it hasn't resolved the issue. The Fn+F5 workaround is working sometimes, but gives a very weird display looking like corrupted fonts etc
*However if I do a screen grab of this and view on another PC the fonts and screen appear normal!!*
The Mobility 1400 is now recognised by Windows but still nothing on the display at either during POST, boot or Windows.
Fearing BIOS corruption I re flashed with the 6.00 official BIOS.
All in all the machine works great, just no display or by pressing Fn+F5 I can sometimes get the +corrupted display+.
Lastly I've hooked on an external display, at no time do i get any display on it regardless of Fn+F5, or windows, POST etc..
Any thoughts? Would a faulty LCD/FL cable cause these type of problems? or even a faulty inverter board? or since I have no external display am I looking at a main board fault?
Happy to carry out any further tests anyone can think of.....
thanks in advanced for the help
    Richard

    Hi,
you are correct I see nothing on external monitor, regardless of Fn+F5.
I can boot the machine and log into it remotely though remote desktop, vnc etc once in I can use the machine as normal just without a screen.
On the occasion when Fn+F5 does bring back a picture, its very distorted - almost to the point of corrupt. However a screen grab of that and then viewed on another machine shows the capture to be perfect.
So the fault lies somewhere between what the main board and the screen.
As I noted previously this laptop has a seperate VGA controller card which I have replaced with a know working one.
I have no replaced the RAM, and CPU on the off chance. The only thing I dont have is a new mainboard lol
    Still no different.
    any thoughts?

  • Display is not working on Satellite P500-1DZ

    Hi
P500-1dz display went black. No sign of anything on the screen so tried a new screen. Still no display.
Put in new Inverter. Still no display. Replaced the ribbon cable on the back of the screen.
    Still nothing.
Hooked it up via the VGA port to an external screen. Works Brilliantly so am assuming its not the graphics chip.
Toggled Fn+F5. The external screen turned off but nothing on the laptop screen. Toggled back to external screen to a perfect display on that one.
Have installed the latest driver for the nVidia chip.
Still no display on laptop screen.
Help please! Going gaga trying to find the problem.
    Have I missed something????

I thought about just buying a complete new screen with new ccfl light installed..but here is what I did..maybe i did it wrong?
I left the OEM screen/light alone, and replaced the inverter itself, which on my P500 series toshiba the inverter isn't grounded or anything, just dbl sided tape basically to the lid...no change...
then i got a new bulb and connected it to the new inverter with the light basically just sitting on the keyboard and the light didnt light up...
Then i replaced the LCD cable with a known good one, from what I was told at least...did samething as above and light still didnt light up.
I took out the OEM ccfl light and it appeared fine, no blown filiments or visible damage..
By everything works fine, just won't turn the light for the screen on?
Just hate to spend the money on a new screen if the light wont turn on again, figured the light wouldn't need to be installed to turn on

  • Output to external display

My Imac has blown graphics card on the logic board, else the machine runs perfectly except for the black screen but the screen works in safe mode. If I use an external display can I overcome this issue?

    Hi Mdn,
My Imac has blown graphics card on the logic board, else the machine runs perfectly except for the black screen but the screen works in safe mode.
I don't think it can have a blown GPU ( It's a chip rather than a card. Who gave you that diagnosis? ) since if that chip was bad it would always be bad.
It seems like a software issue to me.
Have you tried starting from the install disk?
Here's a post from Mac OS X forums by kisuke3 answering:
"I'm having issues with my intel based G5 Power PC which is running OSX 10.5.6.
When I boot it up lines appear across the screen & the machine freezes. If I boot in Safe mode I do not get this issue.":
"safe boot does not load start up items. So if its not happening in safe boot it could possibly be the startup items or login items. Obviously you need to delete those startup items
    1. Boot into safe mode
    2. Go to system preferences>accounts>Login items Delete everything there
    3. Library/Startup items Delete everything here as well
    4. check System/Library/Startup items Delete only 3rd party softwares
    5. Download Onyx or Main menu and clean system cache, run maintenance scripts and disk permissions "
Booting from your installer would also verify that it's software related.
