Display frequency

I have an iMac 20" Core Duo for 15 days now. I noticed right on the second or third day that the display is different from the previous G5 iSight model. I'm having an issue which might not be a problem but a feature...
When I'm fairly close to the screen and move my eyes to the left or to the right (as I move a finder window or an app window) I notice a kind of screen noise: the screen appears like having a grid or becomes textured. It is better seen with grey objects like the metal skin of Safari. When I move my face parallel to the screen surface I can prolong the effect. I think it is because the moving of my eyes puts them in phase with some kind of refresh frequency wave going on in the LCD display (like a cathode ray TV). When my eyes are fixed on some part of the screen I don't notice any of this. I think I've made myself clear although this is hard to explain.
Can it be a problem with my display?

mymango,
You don't see it probably because you're using an iMac G5 and not an Intel Core Duo. Or because it is something that requires much atention in looking at the screen (and close to it, say 8 inches) ... The coating, though, must be the same as I see the sparkle/gelatin you mention. That doesn't really bother me.
It remains to solve the question whether the 'effect'/grid I see is caused by the display coating... or by the display or graphics card itself.

  • Jumping Display T500 Switchable Graphics

    Hi guys
So my dear T500 that has servered me so well over the past 4 years all of a sudden developed the weirdest graphics glitches that were definitely hardware related, as they happened even in the BIOS screen. So I had the mainboard changed and all seems well except.....
The machine dual boots between Windows 7 64bit Ult and Debian Jessie with XFCE. In Linux (and with Fedora and Ubuntu live USB boots) both cards work flawlessly.
In Windows the AMD card works flawlessly. The Intel card however causes the display to jump left and right, kind of like you grabbed the picture at the bottom left of the screen and pulled it outwards and then let go - constantly - to the point where you cannot see a stable display at all.
This error only happens in Windows when the driver loads. No issues in BIOS screen or the Windows booting screen. If I change the display frequency it changes the severity of the effect. If I change the display resolution to anything lower than native 1680*1050 it works fine although obviously the text and graphics look like crap at non-native resolution.
This machine has a replaced mainboard. The RAM has been changed. I am now completely clueless as to what could be the cause. I'd really like to fix it as I love this machine and it serves me very well as a backup deveopment machine etc etc
    Any help greatly appreciated
    Thanks in advance

You'd have to replace the CPU to be sure.
If it was screen related, it should be failing the same way with the discrete card too. You might want to double check the screen cable and connectors though. Do be very careful and 100% ground yourself. The T400 and presumably T500 has a really sensitive backlight fuse.

  • Xserve's mini displayport (dvi to vga) not working with snow leoapard

I am using a Acer 20" display with the mini displayport to vga. and since I updated to snow leopard it is not working anymore. If I change the resolution it is recognized but it is a very bad resolution and as I have a wide screen the resoltion that works looks horrible.
I saw that the update 10.6.2 had some updates including mini displayport problems, but it seems like it did not fixed the problem that I have!
I tried to call the apple support hotline but I got kicked out twice after the agent asked for my serial number and online I could not find anything that could help me to fix my problem.
so if there is someon out there with the same problem or an idea how I can fix that problem I would be very happy!
    greetings from spain / barcelona!
    cheers!

If there are listed options available, changing the refresh rate of the display frequency in the Monitors preference pane will sometimes yield better results at given resolutions.
I have to Xserves connected via a KVM switch to a CRT monitor; one Xserve is using the DisplayPort/VGA adapter, the other is straight VGA from the video card. I had to fiddle with the refresh frequencies to get the images to come close to matching.

  • Color Correction + DVD/MPEG Compression Produced Noise

I recently color corrected a 3-hour rock concert using FCP and a broadcast monitor. When played from the timeline the concert looks great however after outputting, MPEG compression and authoring a DVD there's video noise over the image. Almost snow like but different. I'd post a screengrab but I can't seem to take one in DVD Player. Any advice?

That's exactly right Jonathan, you need to add the 2:3 pulldown, and I can tell you all why. (I read the post from Max Average, but I'm not commenting that separately)
The DVD specification simply does not support video marked as 23.98 fps (which is how Apple wants to call it) or even 23.976 fps (which is what MPEG-2 calls it). This means that for NTSC DVDs you can only use MPEG-2 video files which are marked as 29.97 fps. This is true whether your encoder (like Compressor) is letting you be aware of it or not. There is no "native 23.98 frame rate" on a DVD and the right way of making the decoder believe it is 29.97 instead, is to use 2:3 pulldown. Any other method would just be wasting bandwidth/bitrate or picture quality, depending on which way you want to look at it.
The 2:3 pulldown process, as specified by MPEG-2, is a way for the encoder of describing to the decoder which of its already decoded fields it should be repeating (displaying once more) and when. These field repetitions are designed to increase the interlaced displayed frame rate from 23.976 to 29.97. This "new" frame rate must be explicitely written into the .m2v stream, to be accepted by a DVD authoring tool, e.g., DVD SP.
I am sure many of you may wonder why it is called "pulldown" when in fact the frame rate seems to be going "up" from 24 to 30, as I did myself back in the nineties;-)
The way to wrap ones head around that, is to think about what whould happen if you just mapped 24 FPS film frames onto the NTSC TV standard which has to display frames at nearly 30 fps on a TV. Of course the movie would run 25% FASTER on a TV than it did at the cinema/picture theatre. In that perspective, the solution had to be to SLOW DOWN (pulldown) the presentation speed on a TV. The engineers of that time (this was long before color TV was even invented)
were faced with a need for film (Hollywood movies) to be translated for TV broadcasts). Of course they could not change the 30 fps used for TV broadcasts (29.97 fps came much later when colors were added;-), so they had to come up with a scheme which made each film frame seem to last 25% longer on the TV screen, than it would have otherwise. "Pulling down" the display frequency from, the physical 30 fps to match the experienced 24 fps was accomplished by letting every other frame be displayed for 50% longer on the TV. On average that is of course 25% longer (slower) which was the goal.
I may be monitoring this thread for further comments.

Does anyone know where the part after the . at the frequency come from ? Shouldn't it be 400000.0000000 or 399990.000 for the last point ?

Without see the code generating data this is only a guess, but here goes.
The fact that the error starts so many decimal places out says to me that its probibly related to rounding error when dealing with floats. The basic issue is that floating point numbers aren't represented exactly in computers. There is always some rounding error involved.
The fact that the error grows at a fairly constant rate tells me that the error is being compounded over time as a value is added back to itself.
Given that you are incrementing the frequency value by an integer amount, carry the frequency internally in the code (and operate on it) as an integer. Only convert it to a float as it is about to be used. This will still give a little error -- that's unavoidable -- but at least the error won't be compounding.
Of course that "solution" is dependent upon the assumptions I'm make about your code being correct. It would be helpful to see the code.

  • Simultaneous Editing of Multiple Files in Soundtrack

I have an 8track Logic Project where I have a cough in the middle of a bell ring. There is bleed of this over all the tracks. Can I isolate that region in Logic, and export an audio file for each track region to Soundtrack Pro, and then edit them simultaneously? I want to be able to Display Frequency Spectrum View for 8 tracks simultaneously, and edit the cough out right there. Rather then editing the cough out 8 times, once for each track. I have several songs with coughs in them so this would not be efficient. I know there may be a better solution for removing my cough, but regardless I am interested to learn if you can use Frequency Spectrum View on multiple audio files simultaneously. Thank you for your help.
    -Chris

You say you have several hundred files with 3 columns of data in them. You want to take out the 3rd column from each file and create a new file that contains all  the 3rd columns.
This seems to imply the output file will have several hundred columns in it. Is that correct?

  • NX6600 VTD256 intermittantly found as new hardware on XPPro startup.

    Hello everyone,
I'm having a problem with my NX6600 VTD256 intermittantly being found as new hardware when starting up my computer. When the found new hardware wizard pops up I simply choose no for the installation and reboot. Every time I've done this with 1 exception the following startup is normal with the card found. ( the 1 exception was catastrophic and is documented in the linked thread)
Here is a link to the thread I have going in the MotherBoard section of this forum because I first thought it to be an IRQ issue. All my system Particulars and what I've tried are in the thread. Warning long read!
Thank you in advance for any suggestions that may be offered.

    Hi Richard,
I did follow the advice in the windows drivers we recomend here thread and downloaded Driver Cleaner and used it following the instructions for removing Nvidia drivers. This is my second fresh install of winXP. Both on a new formatted hard disk.
    Here are my IRQ settings.
Although I disabled all the periphials I could in the Mobo Bios. USB, Serial ports, Parallel Port, and LAN. I also removed the 2 dvd's from the computer and had only 1 sata HDD. 1 gig mem stick, and the VGA card hooked up. I there were quite a few open IRQ's and nothing was sharing any. Here is what happened:
    Quote
It didn't take as long as I expected!!!!
I disabled everything that I could in the Mobo Bios Sound,USB, Lan, Serial Ports, Printer Port and disconnected the power and cables to the 2 DVD's, and power and cable to #2 SATA drive! Had to start up about 30 times and Pooof I think my VGA card just went belly up!
On the last 4 startups the resolution is stuck on 640 X 480 X 60 Hz  4 Bit. Now the found new hardware wizard does not come on but the "Your screen resolution is set at a very low level would you like windows to automaticlly adjust it?", comes on!  I clicked yes but nothing changed! I tried to go to settings to change it but the only setting I could access was the Display Frequency and when I changed it and clicked OK nothing happened it reverted back to 60 HZ!
I checked in Device manager under Display Adaptor and it says the device is working normally, All the drivers seem to be there as well.
What now?  I tried to restart it 5 times and it is stuck on 640 X 480 X 60 Hz 4 Bit.
    Quote
Well my panic attack is over! Hehehehe The fun never stops with computers does it??? Grin
What I did do before reading your reply was, BTW I just finished with it and came on here to post and saw your reply,
What I did do was uninstall the NX6600 with device manager and restarted after I hooked everything I had disconnected back up to the computer and re enabled all the disabled devices in the Mobo Bios.
Well Windows found the video card and I reinstalled the drivers that came with the installation cd.
And all is well again which leads me to the conclusion that I have a VGA driver problem.
I then removed the Nvidia drivers removed norton system works completely from the computer. and installed Nvidias V.91.31. worked fine for a few startups then the found new hardware wizard came on with 640X480 60Hz resolution. rebooted and all was good. Then I tried the method in the windows drivers we recomend here thread removed all the nvidia drivers with Driver Cleaner, Disabled norton and installed Nvidia's V77.77 drivers. the problem came back again.

  • 3D capable computer

I have a 20" iMac and I also have Windows Vista separately with Boot Camp. In light of the recently aired Golf Masters in 3D, does anyone know if this iMac of mine (2007) or any others can support 3D viewing? Since the 3D is being offered online only to Windows Vista and Windows 7 and not to Apples, it would be cool to see if it was supported. I guess I could try it and get back to you unless I'm wasting my time trying to download these 3D players and getting glasses. This is something I have never heard of so, anyone? If you don't know what I'm talking about don't bother responding. There is all the info at Masters.com/3D

    Hi Tiery,
all those 3D-display/-glasses solutions mentioned there are using a display frequency of 120Hz.
To my knowledge no Mac internal or external display is capable of 120Hz.
So therefor you would have to buy one the there mentioned 3D-display/glasses solutions.
Secondly not all Nvidia graphics cards are compatible with their solution. Only Geforce series 8 and above are.
For me that leads to the point that if your iMac doesn't have a compatible graphics card, you are out of luck anyway.
If your graphics card is compatible, you have to buy at least one the mentioned 3D-display/glasses and use this with BootCamp Windows.
Not sure if all this effort is worth it.
    regards
    Stefan

  • Power manager issues

    Hello,
I am running Vista Home Premium 64-bit on a T61 with all the latest drivers and the latest version of power manager (2.36).  I have noticed that when the system is on battery, the screen will go blank/turn off every few seconds and then come back on.  Also if I touch the touch pad sometimes that will trigger the screen to go blank/turn off.  This behavior stops once I plug the laptop into an AC power source.
I am wondering if there is any solution to this problem.  It is very annoying and forces me to uninstall the power manager if I want to use the laptop on battery power alone.
    Thanks for any information.

    Hello Paul,
check in Powermanager if it is allowed to run down display frequence for power saving purposes.
Also check Ati Control Center, if option is enabled over there.
This behavior is a feature, not a failure.

  • External Display Problem - Frequency out of range with lid closed

I have read this - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86286 - it should work, but it does not.
I have a black macbook, an apple usb keyboard, a usb mouse and a19" gateway lcd display (max resolution 1440x900). Everything used to work great. Now for some reason no matter what resolution & mhz I set the external display and the macbook to it will not work with the lid closed, I can set bot to the lowest settings (640 x 480) and when I close the lid and wake the mac the message on the external display says "Frequency out of range." I will work fin in either mirror or extended mode with the lid open. Any suggestions? I've tried resetting the pram already and run the disk repair on the start up disk.

I never did figure it out - but the problem has been solved..
I did tried to trash a bunch of preference files - no joy.
I fixed it the old fashioned way - I installed a fresh system (don't waste your time with an archive and install - it just imported the corrupt files). Works fine now..

  • Out of Frequency Problem with Apple Multiple Scan 720 Display and Mac mini

If a resolution with a horizontal and/or vertical frequency not compatible with your display, in this case an Apple Multiple Scan 720 Display, is selected in the Display preference pane of the Mac OS X 10.4.10 system running on a Mac mini (Early '06), you will recieve a message on your screen about being "out of frequency" and the power management feature will shut down and restart your display repeatedly. The following solution should restore your display to proper function. It may apply to other displays and Macintoshes running Mac OS X, but it has only been tested specially on this setup.
    1. Shut down the Mac mini with the power button (press and hold for 5 seconds)
    2. Start the computer up with the Mac mini Mac OS X Install Disc 1 (press the power button, insert the disc, hold the C key down until the progress bar starts up)
    3. Click on the language, then select Utilities > Terminal...
    4. Type "cd /" and return
    5. Type "cd Volumes" and return
    6. Type "cd your hard drive name" and return (you need to enclose the hard drive name in double quotes if more than one word)
    7. Type "cd Library" and return
    8. Type "cd Preferences" and return
    9. Type "rm com.apple.windowserver.plist" and return
    10. Type "exit" and return
    11. Quit Terminal
    12. Select Utilities > Startup Disc...
    13. Select the OS on the hard drive and click on Restart button, holding down the Shift key until the progress bar starts.
    14. Log in to the account that had the display problem in Safe Boot mode
    15. In System Preferences select Display, select a resolution with the appropriate frequency, 60 Hz should be fine, then close System Preferences
    16. Restart the computer, log in to the account normally, and the display should be functioning properly.
DO NOT SELECT AN INAPPROPRIATE RESOLUTION/FREQUENCY FOR YOUR DISPLAY IN THE DISPLAY PREFERENCE PANE! BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID!
Mac mini (Early '06)   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Apple Multiple Scan 720 Display
Mac mini (Early '06)   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Apple Multiple Scan 720 Display

Just a correction and an elaboration:
It should be Startup Disk... with a k, not a c.
Both the resolution and the frequency must be appropriate for your display to work properly. Check your documentation or the manual information available on your display for the appropriate resolutions/frequencies. Evidently the Apple Multiple Scan 720 Display is considered so old that no allowance was made for it in the Display preference pane of Mac OS X 10.4.10.

  • Display out of frequency

just installed solaris 10. I believe it's supposed to boot into the desktop invironment, however when it does, my monitor shuts off and displays the message "out of frequency" if this were a linux system i could edit the x11 settings. however this is obviously not linux, and i have no idea where the file is to change the resolution settings.
    any help? thanks.

    Hi.
*If you can't login into your machine, use ssh.
If you use xsun X-Windows server run kdmconfig and if you are using Xorg (recommended) run /usr/X11/bin/xorgconfig.
You can select there your monitor type and resolution.

  • Newbie question: Why is "learn sound model" greyed out when trying to remove background sounds in a file using the Spectral Frequency display?

I am trying to remove background sounds in a file using the Spectral Frequency display. The first edit on a new file, this process works fine:
    1. use brush to cover sound
    2. right click, learn sound model
    3. effects/noise-reduction-restoration/Sound Remover
The next time I try to remove another sound in the file, "learn sound model" is greyed out. I have to close the file and reopen to be able to make another edit. What on earth is going on? Can it only learn one sound model or something?
I'm a newbie, so thanks in advance for your advice!

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Problems with displaying high frequency sine wave

    Hi all,
I don't why LabVIEW has problem with high frequency display.
Someone plzzz explane me how to see a better grapth on grapth?
check this function waveform generation.vi in examples go to search and type "waveform"
    set the feq to 1k.
    Thanks and regards

I think that this is related to LabVIEW, but more basically to the Shannon theorem : if you want to describe a periodic function, you need to take enough samples. First, expand the x scale to see a delta t of 0.001 s (ie a period of your 1000 Hz signal). Remeber to set the autoscale property on OFF. Then go to "sampling info" and increase the sampling frequency. See the result...
