Display problem after upgrading MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard
Immediately after upgrading my MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard OSX, the display has been exhibiting vertical gray 'banding' extending up from the bottom of the display. Each band is about 1 inch wide. The display seems dimmer as well, and I can't brighten it up.
I'm in the process of upgrading to Lion (Snow Leopard was the intermediate step) and am hoping that resolves the problem. Any advice/suggestions?
I do not have answers for you, but I'll be waiting to see if someone has a "fix" for this. I am running snow leopard on a MacBook Pro, and I have a dim screen problem that doesn't brighten also. (no lines in mine, though)

Authorization problems after upgrading MacBook Pro
I just purchased a new MacBook Pro (upgrading from 1st generation Intel MacBook Pro) and am unable to get working without the authorization message constantly popping up. I reauthorize (it says I am successful), but the songs (I purchased through iTunes) still will not play due to the authorization message. I have tried deauthorizing from my old system, still no joy.
I see many other messages alluding to this problem and tried burning to DVD (I don't have any CD's hanging around) and then re-importing. This does not work. Is this really a conscious decision on Apple's part, as I seem to see from some other posts, to trash all purchased content from iTunes, or is this an innocent technical bug which will (hopefully) be soon addressed? What bothers me is this seems to date back to at least July for many users.
Please advise. All my purchases (music, audiobooks, movies) have all been legitimate, through the iTunes Store and I am going to be more than upset if this has nefarious legal sources, rather than an innocent technical foulup.
If this is a simple PEBCAK (problem exists between chair and keyboard) I am happy to flout my studity for all to see. Just help me solve this problem.I had a similar problem with iTunes when I upgraded to the new 7.5 version. I didn't upgrade my system software or hardware, but I found the Article: 306424 helpful. My problem was with some music that I had purchased with an older Apple ID. I went to the Apple "password recovery" webpage to reset my password for the songs that wouldn't play using the old ID. It worked fine.
If it is any consolation, I am an experienced Mac technician and I am very religious about maintaining my system so that upgrades and updates to software go well. I'm not saying that you haven't maintained your system, but you may want to "repair permissions" using disk utility. I find this step very important to do before and after any software installation or upgrade. I hope this reply helps in some way and best wishes on solving your particular issue. -
Upgraded macbook pro to snow leopard as lost original discs
I backed up with time machine and did a backup with time machine. The backup did not work so lost all photos, videos etc but have them on another computer (not mac) Any suggestions how to get the iphoto, idisk idvd etc back. I am considering downloading ilife which has all of the apps on but am not sure whether compatible
Don't have any PCs, so can't address that issue. However, replacement discs for the originals are available from AppleCare for a nominal S&H (about $20 USD). I strongly suggest getting them, since they contain the Apple Hardware Test program, which comes in handy. For the TM issue, see Pondini's TM FAQs for some TS steps.

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and foolishly upgraded to Yosemite. Now have numerous problems. Is it possible to go back in time with Time Machine and reinstall Snow Leopard? Then upgrade to Lion or Mavericks? Any other ideas on how I can exit Yosemite?
Once you get yourself back to Snow Leopard, if you still want to upgrade somewhat, I would suggest the following:
1. Get an external hard drive that you can use for experiments with new OS versions. You could partition it into 2 or 3 partitions. You could then clone your existing Snow Leopard system to one partition using Carbon Copy Cloner (well worth $40) or SuperDuper ($25).
2. Buy OS X Mountain Lion for $20, through the Apple online store (I don't think it's available through the App Store). Apple has decided to make it very difficult for anyone to get Mavericks unless they have already downloaded it.
You will receive two e-mails from Apple, one containing a PDF with a redemption code, and one with the password you will need to unlock the PDF. Using the code, you will download Mountain Lion from the App Store, where it will appear among your Purchased items.
After ML finishes downloading, its installer app will launch itself. When you see this launch screen, QUIT the install app immediately! Go to your applications folder, find the Install OS X Mountain Lion app, and copy it to a safe location outside of your Applications folder. Keeping one or more copies will allow you to reinstall without unnecessary aggravation if you later need or want to do that. At this point, you can re-launch the Installer in the Applications folder and let it run. You can install it on a clean partition on your external HD, or you can allow it to upgrade the Snow Leopard clone you created on your external drive, or you can do both. This should allow you to test how everything works for as long as you like.
3. If you left yourself a free partition on your test drive, try a clean install of Yosemite and set everything up from scratch (do not migrate anything). This will allow you to see whether your problems with it were related to something in your Snow Leopard system. -
I have a macbook pro running snow leopard. Just recently I cannot view youtube videos and other online videos. I recently updated my flashplayer plugin and I believe that is the problem. Is the latest flashplayer plugin compatible with 10.6.8? If this is so, I need to find an older flash player plugin to reinstall. I do not want to upgrade from 10.6.8 at this time because I have 18 yrs. worth of financial records on Quicken that I have read will not work with Lion and I've read bad things about running music programs on Maverick.

1) Quicken 2007 for Intel (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks) is a full featured app that can be downloaded from Intuit for $15 and will work with your data file if you are using Quicken 2005, 2006 or 2007 (if you version is earlier, let me know for more instructions on easy conversion):

Try these in order:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
I'm using a macbook pro, running snow leopard. Yesterday I got around to emptying my trash for the first time in quite awhile and was surprised by how much there seemed to be in there. Immediately after a question mark symbol appeared on all my hard disk folders. If I click on these question marks I get a message saying ' the item can't be found'.

Not sure where these hard disk folders are located that you are referring to? Finder, Finder tool bar, Finder side bar, Desktop, Dock?
More then likely they are an alias that not longer point to the orginals, thus the question mark.
I would reboot. Delete icons if an alias and just recreate by dragging from the source. Try right click (control) click to remove. -
I have a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. After connecting my HP Photosmart D110 to it, the printer works but the scanner doesn't. The message is"The scan cannot be performed because another program has control of the HP imaging device". Can anyone help?
Found the answer on the HP site. It's the original software that works with this printer OS X 10.6!!

I upgraded the operating system on my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard to Lion via the web. Now I need to erase the hard drive and restore it to factory settings, so that I can pass it on. How do I accomplish this? When I insert the Mac OS X install disk, the only option is to erase the free space. Any insight would be appreciated.

Once you are running off of the DVD you will be able to do a clean install of SL
To boot off the DVD with the system up running Lion insert the DVD. Open Sytem Preferences->Startup Disk and select the DVD then restart the machine.

Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard, Win 7 & Ubuntu, can't upgrade to Lion
I have new 13" macbook pro with Snow Leopard on it. With a combination of boot camp and some disc partitioning trickery, I got windows 7 and ubuntu on it as well. Furthermore I also have a shared data (fat32) partition on the machine (so 4 main partitions - win,mac,linux,shared - plus swap partition, efi, etc).
I just download Lion and I'm trying to start the installer, but when it asks me which partition I want to install it on, all options are greyed out and the Macintosh HD partition says somethign to the effect of "this disc cannot be used to start the computer". Is there any way for me to get lion installed without having to erase all my extra partitions and start this whole agonizing process over again?You may be out of luck without formatting your HDD. See this article from Macworld:
(At least Recovery HD should be created. In our testing, it appears this special partition is created only when you install Lion onto an internal drive formatted with a GUID partition scheme. In addition, that internal drive must initially have only a single partition; or be a multi-partition drive that was partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant and not further modified afterwards. So not everyone will get this useful feature. Apple has confirmed some of these restrictions.)

I tried Onyx, CleanMyMac, iFreeMemory or just purging but still i still have to restart to get it back to normal after closing all the applications... im not really impressed with the memory swapping thing,Even though my inactive RAM is like 2GB its so SloW! Anyone knows how to fix this problem?It's hard to say why your machine is slow, but that machine with 8 GB of RAM should not be slow. Could be any number of possible problems. I can see the server, I can choose the drive, but when try to open a folder the message on Finder is: You don't have permissions to see the content.

I have a windows server 2008 and a NAS working with SMB protocol. Both with the same problem.

Any Question ?Not knowing how much RAM is installed in your iMac, your iMac can take a total of 8 GBs of RAM.
Before upgrading to Mountain Lion, I would strongly suggest installing the maximum 8 GBs of RAM.

You can purchase and download OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store in the OS X dock.
Before installing, it would be prudent to make a backup copy of all of your important data or your entire current system. Either using, optical discs, USB flash drives or external hard drives.
This is too insure protection of your data in case something goes wrong with the install of OS X Mountain Lion.
