Display problem, new motherboard.

I am posting really to vent. I have a sick iMac with display problems. It's got vertical white lines and loss of colors. ChumpUSA indicates that the motherboard will need to be replaced and it's going to take four to five business days to get the part.
I purchased the iMac for a client who I encouraged to switch. They trust me and have purchased two other Macs. They are doing fine, so they aren't soured yet. It's a difficult position in which to find myself. Computers have trouble and need to be fixed, knock wood, I've had very few hardware problems in my 10+ years using Apple products.
I'm just in a bad spot with the failure of the motherboard (poor quality?) and the length of time my client is without a computer for one of his employees.
We will work around it, of course. I just don't see why it would take a week to get a part.
Any advise or words of encouragement are appreciated.

Sorted myself but will post solution in case others need it.

  • My new MacBook Pro has display problems

I am new to Mac. I had purchased a brand new MacBook Pro 13 inches with i7 processor on April2 this year, Within 10 days the display screen started to grey out and later  on develop horizontal lines. I telephoned Apple support and when a telephonic solution  became unlikely I was asked to take it to an Apple Authorized service centre in my town. The technician there could not clearly explain to me what was wrong with the system, but I understood him to say that he has reinstalled the graphics driver and the system was trouble free for a prolonged time thereafter (at the service centre). I also understood him to say that should the problem recur again, he would have to replace the motherboard. I was on a travelling tour for a week after this and was not able to test out this repair (I took my old windows system with me for the travel) To my utter dismay the problem has recurred again after 28 days of purchase. I have attached screenshots. The button for uploaing videos is greyed out therefore  I will have to restrict myself to screenshots. All the three screen images occcur
in turn and the system becomes unusable and I have to use the poweroff button. The display problems start within 10 minutes of switiching on the system.
I took some time to discover these forums. The first time this problem occurred on my machin I posted this problem on mac-forums and I was advised to take it to an Apple store and let the apple genius bar worry about this one. I do not live wihtin any sort of manageable distance from such a place and the repair centre is an Apple Authorized Service Provider
Coming to the emotional aspects of this technological glitch. I feel like I have been hit by a truck.I had saved and scraped pennies to buy this dream machine and I believed I was escaping the ficleness of windows. But no windows system of mine (I have three) become so unusable
Will I have to spend time and effort to lug this machine to service centre to replace each of its component parts one by one ? Can I ever trust this machine to provide a presentation to an audience? What sort of an impression will I create if the system plays this trick on me in the middle of some presentation?

Shootis007, What is CC company? I googled CC and got many different answers.
I called Apple Support and told them my story and pressed for replacement and they told me repeatedly that there is no policy for replacement. The initial support person who attended my call asked me to take it to the seller and ask the seller for replacement. I dont think that is the way to go. I dont know what is his fault. He gave me a brand new system, the package was opened by me. Since I am new to Mac, I had taken a Mac user friend with me who showed me how to get started (right there in the shop) Neither the experienced Mac user friend nor I felt anything remiss at that time or later at the Seller level. Nevertheless I called the reseller and he explained his helplessness. I dont think it his fault at all.
Since I kept insisting on replacment I was put through to another support person who took pains to reassure me that I should get the defective part replaced and thereafter all will be well. For now I trust him. I have no other alternative
I really am puzzled. All you dear Mac users should know that the machine I dreamed of and really saved to purchase is giving me no end of troubles whereas my three windows machines sit there with their numerous stated deficiencies but gives me uninterrupted service

  • New Motherboard  problems backing up

The technician replaced my motherboard and now my Time Machine says "This backup is too large for the backup volume..." I reselected the TM hard drive to make sure. It only has 6 gigs of blank space. But I just want it to work like it did before where it replaces the changed files. I tried that link on macoshints.com and I just couldn't get it to work right in the terminal. It just says no such file etc.
I would love any help anyone can give me. Thank you

If you weren't successful in changing your MAC address in Time Machine using the directions in the Mac OS X Hints 10.5: Repair Time Machine after logic board changes post, Time Machine will try to make a completely new backup because of your new motherboard. That is probably why your Time Machine disk got overly full. This can cause all sorts of serious problems so launch the Time Machine interface and delete some old files in your backups that you are absolutely sure you don't need, leaving at least fifteen percent free space on your Time Machine Disk. Then launch Disk Utility and Verify your Time Machine Disk. If there are errors repeat Repair until Disk Utility reports no errors.
The next issue is the problem of changing your MAC address. If your hard drive name has spaces in it go to the Mac OS X Hints article and scroll down to the "Minor correction (escape the spaces!)" comment and follow those directions.
If that doesn't do the trick, you might want to ask on the Using Mac OS X Leopard Forum. More people who understand UNIX really well read that forum so it's more likely that someone who might be able to help you with changing your MAC address will see your post.

  • Internet problem on new motherboard

I have this problem since I installed my new motherboard - MSI Z77A-G45 Gaming...
Problem is when I start Windows SOMETIMES, I can not access web pages which use http, however I can enter on https sites. And rebooting helps (sometimes it needs 2 or 3 reboots). This is really annoying. If anyone else has this problem or knows how to solve it, please help me.

  • New motherboard was installed. Problem with restoring iTunes

Help! We had to have a new motherboard installed on our $1500 phantom box computer that was only a year old (Lesson learned, I know.) I found the iTunes folder with the iTunes music library and my files backed up in my hard drive. The Help section said I can move the folder into the library source. I re-installed the software, iPod updater, etc. and tried to drag the folder into the "Library" in the "Source" column. Nothing happened. How do I get the files to re-populate iTunes?

I have dragged the full folder "I Tunes" which has the following inside: iTunes Library (the database) and a file titled iTunes Music Library (an XML document)over the word Library in the left Source column. It gave me a plus sign when I dropped it in. Nothing happened except a new playlists titled "iTunes" are created in the source section which are blank. I went into File, Add folder to Library and clicked on the folder and OK and nothing happened.

  • T61 display problem on both Internal and External monitors

    Hi,
I have Lenovo T61 of Type 7662, Model CTO. One month back the right hinge of my laptop has broken. Now the display on the screen is not at all readable. If I reboot the laptop, it is getting loaded, but the display on the screen is not readable and also it is displaying 4 windows without any clear visibility.
I thought the problem may be with the LCD cable under Right hinge. So, I tried to check this with an external monitor. But, the same problem is occurring on the external monitor also. So, I couldn't find what exactly the problem is. If anybody has this kind of problem, please help me on fixing this issue.
    Thanks,
    RamPap.

well the GPU issue is fixable under free repair, but given that your hinge is broken, not sure whether the free warranty applies in this case.
Basically you need a new motherboard.
Also, can you post a picture of the condition of the hinge? (upload it to tinypic or flickr, then link it here).

  • MSI 648 Max - Display Problems

I recently bought the MSI 648 Max motherboard, as my system needed an upgrade quite badly.  To cut the costs down a bit, I’ve used some parts from my previous system (eg the video card which is an 2x AGP, 64 Mb, Kyro based card) but got new RAM, CPU and psu.
I put together the system (described below), loaded Windows ME, updated all drivers with latest releases, and the thing works but the quality of the display is really bad    ;( .  That is, I get lots of video artefacts (shadows, fading text, vertical lines, distorted colours, etc).  The video card was working fine on my other machine.  Also, Sisoft Sandra says that the card is operating at 2x AGP, as it should.
I am not overclocking; some of the BIOS parameters I used are as follows (based on the OPTIMAL DEFAULTS):
    AGP Aperture Size                     128 Mb
    DRAM CAS Latency                      by SPD
    Timing Setting Mode                      NORMAL
    MA 1T/2T Select                      AUTO
    Primary Graphics Adapter      AGP
Allocate IRQ to PCI VGA      NO
    CPU/DRAM Frequency Ratio      by SPD
DRAM Frequency                      167 MHz (for now)
    CPU Frequency                      133 MHz
    AGP/PCI Frequency                      66/33
    DRAM Vcore          2.6 V
    CPU Vcore         AUTO
The system temperature showed in the Health Status is less than 40 C (104 F).
I have tried the latest AMI BIOS (version 1.3), and then reverted to version 1.0, but I still have the same display problem.
I would really appreciate some help.

  • G5 Freeze - new motherboard, still freezing

    Hi.
A few months ago my PPC G5 started freezing while I was working. After a lot of tests, with updating OSX, and new RAM, Apple decided the problem was in the motherboard. I bought a new one, and after a looooong time waiting for the board to arrive and them to install it, Apple gave my machine back.
After a week working perfectly, when I used FinalCut Pro to encode a video, BANG! freezes again, and keep freezing even when using TextEdit or lighter applications. Sent back to Apple, and after some weeks they said "you need a new motherboard, but it is our fault, we'll substitute it for you".
Almost a month later, I went there to pick my computer. We tested enconding video in FinalCut togheter with Photoshop instalation and video convertin on Quicktime. Worked very well.
4 days later, the first freeze, and again I cannot work anymore. If I open GMail, this thing goes down. I'm using IStat Widged to monitor hardware, and it freezes even with no memory or processor hard activity.
Does anyone has some clue? Apple doesn't.
    Luiz

    The hatter,
Will try to be more specific:
I have two identical computers here, PPC G5 Dual 2.0 with 2.5 RAM, same storage devices, same display and same instaled softwares: FinalCutPro, DVDStudioPro, Adobe Photoshop CS2.
One year ago, one computer started reading 1GB RAM instead of 2.5. I restarted it and it came back okay, no more problems. In March it started freezing, but just once in a while. I reinstaled OSX, updated it and keep freezing.
I called Apple here, they said by phone: "maybe it is the memory, try to take it out and put again, maybe is the position in the slots". I did and no more freezes that day. But just that day, so I send it to them to test.
Took some weeks for me to get an answer, and came: "motherboard is the problem, we tested with another processor and it is fine". After a long time the board arrived (I'm in Brazil!), and Apple called me: "came and get it, your computer is okay".
Like I said, in a few days it started freezing again and I sent it to Apple: "wow, the problem is the motherboard again, the one we instaled is not working properly, we need a new one but you don't need to pay for it, was our fault". More waiting for the new motherboard to arrive. Apple called me: "we put your machine to be tested with our hardware test software. It is running since yesterday and it is fine. But if you want come here and we can test together". I went there and installed FinalCutPro with then, so we encoded a video while compressing another one and doing more things at the same time. Worked fine. It was Thursday.
On Monday I took a VIDEO_TS folder of a 8GB DVD I did here and put on Toast to burn in a 4.3GB DVD. This compression process is one of the freezers in the past. It worked fine. Next day I opened HandShake to make a video from a DVD. More than 5 freezes in one hour. I restarted the process 6 times. Since that, more freezes all the time.
I really dont know the tests the made, and the two computers are in the same room here, with the same conditions, same kind of use and same age, and behind 1000VA...
Sometimes I think this machine is placed over a indian graveyard like in Poltergeist movie.
But I'll talt to Apple phone like DaddyPayCheck said, and after that I'll came here again and tell you all about the solution.
    Thanks The Hatter.

  • Installing New Motherboard

A month or so ago I got some advice here in the forums with regards to frequent freezes, and hangs on my 4 yr old eMac 1.25G. I was advised correctly, that there had been a problem with a bad batch of caps for a power supply on the motherboard. Apple ran a repair extension program that has since expired, and there doesn't seem to be any way to contact them.
I even went to the nearest Apple store (3 hours away), and tried to get with a genius. I was told It would be about a 7 hour wait.
After looking around online, I've found I can buy a whole new motherboard for my machine for about $200 bucks. I'm thinking about purchasing it and installing it myself.
I have a service manual with instructions for the installation, and have been inside the eMac before just looking around.
    Any advice?
BTW: I don't have the discharge tool that the service manual calls for, so I am going to leave the machine plugged in and off for at least a week before attempting this to allow the display cap to discharge.
    Thanks
    Chris

I just replaced the logic board on my emac myself. It's a lot of work, but as long as you follow the service manual, you can do it. I did not discharge the CRT, since I was not working near it. Just use one of those wrist grounding straps. Here's some advice:
Keep track of all the screws, i.e. what part they belong to - since you have to remove SEVERAL components to actually get to the logic board. I wrote down on a piece of paper the name of the component, the order in which I removed it, the number of screws, and then put the screws right there.
You will need thermal paste (Radio Shack) when you put the heat sink back on the processor.
Be careful when re-connecting the down converter to the logic board. I had trouble getting the male pins lined up with the female socket, and I actually mangled one of the plastic sockets. Luckily, the pins still make contact, so no worries.
While you're inside, give the fan a good shot of compressed air to clean out the dust.

  • Need new motherboard for Equium P300-16T

    Hello there!
I have Toshiba Equium P300-16T, Model Number PSPC2E-003003KS, One day my computer doesnt start. no reply no signal on display. so I really think that motherboard is broken, or blow off! does anyone know how can i get new motherboard for my laptop?
i donno where to see the motherboard number or name. where can i also see this?
Please people! I really need help!
    Thanks

    Hello
I can imagine to find new motherboard will be pretty problematic and what you can do is to contact nearest Toshiba authorized service provider and ask for help.
They have access to Toshiba database and can tell you exact part number.
For you is important to get motherboard for PSPC2E model and it will be exact the same.
Problem is that mainboard is very expensive so think twice what the best option for you is: to exchange it or buy new notebook.
Do you want to exchange it alone?
