Display Questions for Current T410s Owners

Hello all,
I am in the market for a new laptop and I have boiled it down to the T410s. There is only one issue that concerns me about the actual laptop, the max resolution size. Currently I am using a 15 incher @ 1920x1200 which gives me lots of screen real estate. I do not find the text at all hard to read and I know that it would be presumably smaller even at 1080p on a 14 inch screen which probably wouldn't bother me either.
My questions to the board are:
Has anyone been in the same boat and actually bought a T410s? Do you miss all of the screen space that you used to have or did you just get over it?
Also has anyone successfully replaced the screen with a higher resolution option? Even a 1650x1050 wouldn't be a bad option. This could include unofficially supported screens among other things. Basically, just wondering if a screen change out would work.
Thanks!

I don't think a 1680x1050 screen panel exists for the 14.1" size.

  • When Windows 8 comes out, will there be an upgrade option for current TouchSmart owners?

I just read a little bit about Windows 8 and noticed it was a very touch oriented OS. Once HP adapts their TouchSmart line to this new OS, will they offer a way for current owners to upgrade to Windows 8 and the (presumably) new TouchSmart software?

No one here would be privi to Apple's plans on the matter. Submit your feedback to Apple requesting such a feature:

In the interim, there is a reminder program for pretty much every need and taste in the App Store.

  • Question for S10-3t owners

    Hi Folks,
I'm seriously considering purchasing an S10-3t, but I have a question for you.
Is there a reason everyone is choosing the low-end model?
I'm looking at the one with 2 GB, faster processor, larger hard drive, Windows 7HP, Bluetooth.
I've priced it out and it is about $110 more than the best price I've seen for the low end model ($399). It seems like the price difference is probably worth it.
Note: I am pricing it out with and additional 8 cell battery to go with the 4 cell it comes with, and there is currently a 15% off promotion until June 3
    Faster processor:  $10?
    Extra memory:  $30
Windows 7 HP upgrade:  $80 (according to Microsoft)
Bluetooth:  $15-30+ (Seems really handy for 3G tethering and/or external peripherals)
Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
    Thanks!

The following is from a post I put on the forum on March 17.   The prices shown is what the models cost at that time.
I originally bouth the S10-3T with the N450 chip and 8 cell battery from a retail store in US. I returned the unit to the store and opted for the S10-3T with N470 chip and 4 cell battery. Lenovo includes Windows Home Premium and Bluetooth.
I bought the 8 cell battery as I was not sure which I would prefer. The 4 cell battery is nice because its flush with unit. Its good for me during my daily commute. The 8 cell battery is definitely needed for long trips. The 8 cell sticks out and is personal choice if you like the added bulkiness.
Prior to returning the N450 model, I recorded the Windows Indexing results and ran Geekbench. For those deciding which model to purchase below is a benchmark and average price comparison of both machines.

  • Question for C6-01 owners

Hello.  I just received shipment of a C6-01 from Nokia.  I like it... build feels good, it seems as good as all the Nokia phones I've had before.  But I have a question for those who have the C6-01.  When you look at the camera on the back of the phone, is the LED flash mounted at a slightly different angle than the camera lens?  On this new phone it looks like the flash is on slightly different plane.  If you would look at your phone and tell me if this is consistent I would appreciate it... I want to make sure this one's not damaged.

Hard to show in pic... hopefully you'll get the idea.

  • Multi-Display Question for Late 2009 Mini

Hello, I have a very quick question. I was looking at attaching an additional monitor to my late 2009 Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2.26 GHz. It has two ports for video, the *Mini Displayport* and the *Mini DVI*. I was looking at springing for the $20 adaptor so that I could add a second VGA monitor via the displayport but I am curious, is there any additional hardware required to run a second monitor from my mini other than the adaptor? I would like to add to my desktop space so I want more than just a mirror. Is there any chance that someone here could please point me in the right direction?

Thank you! I appreciate your response. I didn't know that communities like this existed before I started trying to research my question here.
The adapter I was considering: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A
I already am using a VGA adapter for the Mini DVI port which is what I run my current single screen off of.
The overview for the adapter seems to suggest that I can use it to extend my desktop (which is more than just creating a mirror?), but I am not sure that the model I have has that capability. I read somewhere that you need to add a second video card but I am not quite sure if that only applies to PCs.

  • Display Questions for MB Purchase

The hard drive in my current Dell laptop (yuck) is dying, so it's time for me to buy a new laptop. This seems like the perfect opportunity for me to purchase a Mac! The best Mac laptop I can afford at the moment is either a refurbished 2.0 GHz Aluminum MacBook or a refurbished 2009 White MacBook. Before I decide which of these to purchase, I need more information regarding MacBook screens.
    1. Do these latest-model MacBooks' screens display true millions of colors, or do they display artificial millions of colors (thousands of colors plus dithering)? I know that Apple recently settled a lawsuit related to this issue in MacBooks and MacBook Pros -- and I think an iMac lawsuit is currently underway -- but I don't know if Apple is currently using displays which show true millions of colors.
    2. I've read that some MacBook displays are actually better than others -- 9C8C, 9C89, 9C5E, etc. Is there a comprehensive and up-to-date list of MacBook displays with descriptions of which is best?
    3. Might I be able to request a certain display if I order my MacBook in-store or by telephone? For budgetary reasons, if possible, I wish to purchase a refurbished MacBook instead of a new MacBook.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I truly appreciate your willingness to help me, but please understand that I've already done both a Google search and a search of the Apple Discussion forums regarding MacBook screens. For instance, those searches enabled me to obtaine the screen model numbers that I included in my original post.
There are many reports regarding Apple settling the recent MacBook and MacBook Pro dithering court case. However, I have been unable to locate any information regarding the terms of that settlement. Has Apple volunteered to use true millions of colors screens in laptops, have I missed fine print from Apple explaining that its laptop screens continue to use dithering, something else?
I've been able to uncover that MacBook screens are not created equal to one another, because Apple obtains MacBook screens from a number of different suppliers. And while a significant number of Mac users seemingly feel that MacBook Air/Pro screens are superior to both the White MacBook's screen and even the Aluminum MacBook's LED-based screen, others Mac users argue that at least some MacBook screens are comparable to more expensive Apple laptops.
As you can imagine, the thought of purchasing a MacBook that uses a potentially inferior screen makes me reluctant to purchase a refurbished unit from Apple +sight unseen+. But if there is a way for me to be 99% certain that any MacBook I buy will have an excellent screen -- such as making a special request to Apple for a certain screen model number -- I will be less afraid to buy.
Of course, I'm imperfect and the internet is a huge place. So it is entirely possible that I missed important sources of information on this topic. Please post links of any sources you feel might shed more light on this issue. Thanks!

  • Question for Mac Pro owners w/Pioneer DVR-112D superdrive: what firmware?

For those whose Mac Pro came pre-installed with the Pioneer DVR-112D superdrive, what firmware revision is it running?
The reason I'm asking is that I have an aftermarket 112D, bought from OWC, that I purchased for it's rip/burn speed advantage over the pokey, possibly riplock crippled, Sony DW-150A that came with my Mac Pro. This advantage was indeed gained, but at the expense of living with some quirkiness with the drive, namely the "two-ejects required" problem discussed here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthre...highlight=112D
This quirkiness has gotten worse since the latest Mac Pro EFI firmware update on 09/27/07. Now if I'm watching a movie from a DVD in the 112D tray, any extended pause (and by extended I only mean more than a minute or so) causes an unrecoverable error in DVD Player and I'm forced to restart the DVD Player and restart the movie.
My suspicion is that this all has something to do with some (overzealous?) power management feature in Mac OS X that's not playing nice with the existing 112D firmware (I'd be interested in hearing any other plausible theories).
Currently, my 112D firmware is at revision 1.06. There a number of updated firmware revisions for the 112D circulating on the internet, PC centric, of course and mostly related to disabling region-locking etc.
I'd like to match my 112D firmware to whatever Mac Pro owners with a 'bona-fide' 112D enjoy, if it's publicly available somewhere.
    Thanks.

The latest Pioneer DVR-112D/212D OEM firmware is v. 1.22 dated august 7, 2007. My general practice is to Avoid Apple firmware on OEM drives, it often disables features and is most infrequently updated.
My 112D is at version 1.21. Over the years I have successfully updated the firmware in my Pioneers using the Terminal app DVRFlash. But DVRFlash doesn't support the 112 or 111 series (yet). I wondered how you had updated to 1.22. I know it can be done by connecting to a PC, (which includes Bootcamp, but not Parallels) but I don't have ready access to a PC. At the moment I am waiting for Leopard before going Bootcamp way.
    Any advice?
Hope this isn't hijacking the thread.

  • GPU? Graphics drivers? Question for Penryn MBP owners.

I have a Penryn 2.4 MBP (current generation) and, after one graphics update and several os upgrades, I am still experiencing bad graphics.
Some times, very rarely, I still have corrupted text. It is self-healing, after a while it goes away. If I try and take a screenshot of the window with corrupted text, the screenshot is ok.
I have still flickering and big, white boxes in on-line videos, like the ones on youtube. Even in this case the problem appears to be self-healing. It goes away after a while and I do not think that it is heat-related, sometimes it happens when the components are not very hot.
Scrolling sometimes is bad. For example, in single-column Finder window, sometimes I cannot see the 1/3 bottom part of the column, which appears empty, when I scroll.
Frankly all these problems are absurd and I started thinking that they are hw-related. It's impossible apple is not able to offer stable and good graphics drivers/subsystem. Anyway, I have no problems when using non-apple applications, like firefox (but in Firefox I still see big white boxes in videos).
    What is your experience?

This may be an old post, but for those still looking for an answer you can get the 13.12 (December 2013) AMD graphics driver from https://www.dropbox.com/sh/915fpdtgbgoksct/kOY7bKHgKq Select "Download->Download as .zip".
I only modded the driver for the windows 7 64-bit install, so if you using windows 8 under bootcamp you'll have to follow the included instructions yourself.
Please let me know/like this post if this works for you. (It would be great if you could report whether it worked based on using Win 7 or Win 8)

  • DPS Question for Master Collection Owners

I own the Master Collection and am not interested in subscribing to the Creative Cloud at this time.
My educational institution has a much easier time fiscally in one-time outlays (licenses) rather than monthly (continuing) subscription models.
For this reason I am interested in DPS however not in the Creative Cloud.
I have been having a bear of a time finding out any information regarding non-Creative Cloud DPS pricing.
I sense a real push from Adobe to the Creative Cloud where DPS is concerned.
I am interested in leveraging DPS in a classroom setting with approximately 40 computers, all licensed with at least Web and Design Premium.
If possible, I would be grateful for pricing for the Professional and Enterprise licenses for DPS.
Additionally, if anyone could explain the differences, along with costs for uploading apps for review and distribution by Apple, this would be wonderful.
Thanks in advance for any assistance, either from kind and knowledgeable forum readers, or Adobe staff-
    Timothy

Thanks Bob for your swift reply. I greatly appreciate the ability to correspond related to my query.
The goal is to teach students to integrate the Creative Suite CS6 (in this case, primarily Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign/Incopy) and Lightroom4, into a convergent newsroom environment, with final portfolio in the DPS.
We are designing a curriculum where the final project for students will be a student-created magazine/journal to be distributed via the appstore for alumni outreach.
We have a campus site license with Adobe however our IT staff have no information on DPS, or at least they are unaware of it at this time.
Currently I am working on writing a grant with a deadline of next week, Friday January 25. I want to include costs for licensing of DPS for Education, however I have requirements to adhere to.
In particular, I am not permitted to allocate monthly subscriptions into a grant of this type, rather, the licensing costs must be based on 1-time outlays.
If there were additional charges necessary to upload a finished magazine, that would be fine, but monthly charges (ie subscriptions) would not be possible.
Thank you again Bob. I have attempted to contact Adobe Education via this forum and email however it remains (now, and in the past) challenging for me to actually speak with someone.
Cordially with appreciation for your expertise, and willingness to share your perspective-

  • Black Friday deal question for current subscribers.

As a current subscriber is it possible for me to switch my plan to the black friday deal pricing? I've only been on my plan for 2 months.

You might want and have to wait. The iPhone 4 is good but next year the iPhone 5 could be at the 4s price now and 4s be free.
Apple does not let specials really go through unless there a new phone or iPad etc. Verizon doesent allow an early early upgrad since they let go the yearly upgrade. You can add a line but is the iPhone 8gig really worth it? You have to ask yourself that.

  • Interesting question for original iPhone owners

    Hi,
I was looking at the back of my device today while it was out of the case (more then usual) and when looking at the two lines of text (below the word "iPhone" but above the memory size icon...in my case mine says "8GB" with a square around it, if you look at the two lines really closely it looks like the lines of text are not straight (more on the right part of the two lines verses the left part of the two lines.
When I turn the phone sideways looking at the text, then it pretty much looks aligned. I'm wondering if what I'm seeing is just an optical illusion when looking at it right side up or are the two lines really not imprinted on the device in a straight line?
Intersted to hear other owners in their findings. It's kinda bugging me now so I wanted to ask other people if they see the same thing as I do.

Are you referring to the second line, beginning roughly with the IMEI number? Using a Schaedler Precision rule, magnification glasses, and a lot of squinting under a halogen lamp, it appears the capital letter height of IMEI is approx. 1/64th of an inch taller than the capital letters ~ FCC ID ~ on the far left of that line. 1/64th is the smallest unit on this ruler. The IMEI on my phone is aligned on the upper portions of the FCC letters, but not along the IMEI baseline of that second line. It's optically insignificant to me, especially since it's on the back and in a case. Hope this helps.

  • Info for current iPhone owners

    From Gizmodo-
Do you plan on upgrading your now-obsolete iPhone on July 11th? Great—good for you big spender. Here's the skinny. AT&T informed us that anyone who bought an iPhone after May 27th will be able to swap out their handset with no additional charges for an iPhone 3G. What about everyone else? If you signed a 2-year contract with AT&T when the iPhone came out (which you pretty much had to), you'll have to sign another new 2-year contract to score a new iPhone 3G. The good news is that AT&T will allow you to overwrite your old contract with your new contract. In other words, you're just locked into another 2 years, not 3.

good to know! This sounds standard! Good news, everyone can stop the panic. Breath deep!
