Display sleep issue

Hi all,
Recently I started to have issues such as unable to select some of my applications running in the background after waking up from sleep display mode. This is not computer sleep, just the display sleep. I am suspecting that it is display sleep mode because the issue seems to only happen after the display is waken up. When I try to select my Mail app. for example, which is in the background, via the Dock or via the app. switcher mode, it can't be done. The app. doesn't want to come into the foreground. I had to force quit the app. via Terminal and then its ok again. This is not only happening to Mail app. but any other apps that are in the background. It seems to be happening randomly on various apps, not just one. At times, the app. is still open, which is indicated on the dock, but the app. switcher is not showing it. In conjunction with this problem, when I shut down the computer, it will come up with a menu saying to confirm shutting down the machine, otherwise it will shutdown within certain time. I try to click "yes" but it can't execute, like I can't select it at all. Still, other times, the Dock will stop working, ie. can't launch any apps. I had to to a kill and relaunch from terminal to activate it again. Initially I suspected that could this be due to that I am running low on hard drive space, which interferes with the virtual space that os x uses. By running low, I mean I am only left with 10 to 15GB out of a 200GB hard drive. I am running 10.4.11 on a macbook pro 17" santa rosa, 4gb ram. I am thinking this is less likely the issue.
Any clues, I would appreciate to hear from you all. Thanks.

Hi BD,
sorry I didn't get back to you earlier, thanks for the educational info. That will help me when I am low on hd space. After using Applejack, the system seems better. More so, I checked the console log, and I think I had another culprit. Apple's remote desktop enabled function (allowing my machine to be controlled remotely) kept crashing. I had teleport function that kept coming up with error messages as well. So I disabled both functions in the end, and things were better. Well, until I got hit with a blank screen syndrome where external and internal display didn't work. I suspect this could be a nvidia gfx bug failure. Either that or the logic board was malfunctioning. In anycase, I send the machine in for a repair and things are working well, hopefully for longer term. Thanks again for your help BD!

  • HP 15-r030nr display/sleep issue

Started having an issue recently with my HP 15-r030nr.  If I move the laptop slightly, or adjust the display screen back or forth, the display goes blank, and the laptop seems to go into sleep mode.  But I can't just get it out of sleep mode, I have to move the display back and forth until a certain position brings back the display.  The screen is at the login prompt as if it was in sleep mode, so it isn't just a matter of the screen going blank, something else is happening as well.  Is this a loose connection issue, or something more?  I noticed that when the display starts going out, the wlan light is flickering as well, almost in time to the flickering that the display is doing.

  • Using computer in closed clamshell with second display sleep issues

    Hi,
I'd really appreciate someone's input here - this article (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3131) guides you through using a macbook pro in closed clamshell with a second display - the trouble is that my machine goes straight back to sleep within seconds of me waking it up?? - I'm using the 'allow bluetooth devices to wake this computer' setting.
    Can you help?
    Thank you.

When my monitor wakes from power-saving mode, the screen is all snowy.

I have issues too- though they are different. Monitor comes on showing a blue screen, this last 5-10 seconds, either at this point or just before the blue screen I get a flash of the desktop. The screen then goes blues again and the desktop appears. Sometimes there is a brief flicker of corruption.
I did a safe reboot and redid permissions. After that the monitor would not come on at all until i reset the PRam.
I also cannot the seat the card properly so i cannot reattach the bracket the screws the card into the case...

  • Display sleeps after 1-2 minutes running Windows 8.1

Both my MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch (Early 2013) and my wife/son's MacBook Pro 13-inch (Late 2011) are dual booted with Windows 8.1. Both have the same display issue; the display goes to sleep after approximately 1 to 2 minutes (1:20 to be precise). The issue didn't appear until the 2nd day after the install on my MacBook Pro Retina and it has been an ongoing issue for my wife on her 13-inch. Is it related to the 5.1.5621 or 5.1.5640 Boot Camp drivers? Can I remove those drivers and try to go back to the previously released set of drivers? That is when I notice the issue show on my MacBook but honestly there were so many updates through the process that this is just a guess. It's more of a nuisance than anything. After finding and installing Lubbos for the heating issue and TrackPad++ for the trackpad options I was hoping I could solve this as well. Has anyone heard of a fix for this? The only display/sleep issues I've been able to find are not similar to my issue, from what I've read anyways. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having the same problem and have been working with my company for a week trying to resolve this. We've tried the following:
    - Altering MTU settings (700 - 1400)
    - Turning on/off wireless and connecting via Ethernet
    - Turning on/off encryption
    - Tried DigiTunnel VPN client
None of this seems to work.
I am able to connect fine via Windows installed on the same MacBook. It's just the MacOS side that disconnects.

  • 10.9.2 update sleep issue with NEC monitors confirmed

After updating from Mac OS10.9.1 to 10.9.2, both my friend, who lives in another city, and I find that attempting to put our MacPros (2010, think his is a 2009 model) attached to a NEC PA 301 (mine) or PA 271 (his) series pro monitors to sleep experience a frozen screen and cursor followed about a minute later with an expected and desired sleep mode. My computer does something slightly different than his in that the background of the dock turns a golden yellow when the screen freezes. Both systems start up from sleep correctly.
If I only use my Apple 30 inch Cinema Display, the sleep mode works as expected.
Spent two hours with Apple Care (level one and level two) people that didn't have a clue what was going on. Called NEC and they had no explaination.
Any thoughts of wisdom of what is going on with the sleep issue that occurred right after we put the 10.9.2 update?

    Andrew,
This is not an AppleCare issue, it is an Apple bug that you didn't want and  will be addressed by AppleCare representatives. Your are helping out the communnity.  If they don't believe you, refer them to this discussion. They never tell you about the 90 day software exception clause for free techsupport when one updates to a major MacOS change. I found that sending in a known bug where many people are experiencing it through AppleCare where they end up uploading your OS data to their engineers gets more attention than going to Apple.com/feedback. The more people who report it, the quicker it gets addressed.
As far as going back to 10.9.1, didn't you do a back-up before you did an Apple "fix" that you can go back to? My problem is that every day my calendar, documents, email, etc change a lot so I am reluctant to go back to my back-up which I hate to say is only on TimeMachine now. My other backups (mirror copies) occur nightly and I didn't notice this bug till a day later.
You pay good money for only quality equipment so a wierd bug like this should not occur on a little update.
I have reported this to Apple and NEC but need others to light a fire under those in charge to make a change and not have us wait for one or two updates later.
If you want to request NEC to jump in to getting this fixed, send a message to the NEC monitor product manager (Art Marshall): [email protected]

  • Macbook Pro and external monitor sleep issues.

I recently upgraded to a new 13 inch MacBook Pro to replace my previous one.  With the upgrade, I'm now on the latest OS and I have a Thunderbolt instead of Mini-displayport output.  I have a Dell U2410 monitor which has worked great up until now, but I now have the following behavior:
When the laptop sleeps (or puts the display to sleep) the monitor begins to turn on and off.  It goes to powersave mode and immediately wakes up, realizes there's no signal, and goes back to powersave mode, etc etc etc.
When I wake the computer up from sleep, the monitor's behavior stays the same.  The laptop never detects the display and begins sending a signal.
If I unplug and replug the adapter, all is well.
There seem to be two separate issues: whatever signal the computer continues to send down the display cable after sleep seems to confuse my monitor, secondly, the computer never again sends a real video signal down the line after it wakes up.
I'm on the latest 10.8.3.  My adapter is the same adapter I have been using for years, an apple mini-display port to DVI adapter.  Supposedly this adapter is still compatible with the Thunderbolt port.
I've seen lots of issues online about wake up issues with the latest OS.  Is there a workaround for this yet or do I have to uplug my monitor anytime I sleep the computer?

    Hi Steve,
I have had the exact same issues after adding a WD Thunderbolt Duo external drive to a Mid 2011 iMac and then daisy chaining the Dell U2410 monitor off that.
My Mini DP to DVI cable ceased working properly - sleeps issues.
After buying one of these adapters of Ebay:
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-in-1-Mini-Displayport-to-HDMI-with-audio-DVI-DP-ada pter-3in1-convertor-Macbook-/110861703462?pt=US_Audio_Cables_Adapters&hash=item1 9cfdf5926
I then tried all the different cables that came originally with the Dell U2410 with that adapter, and none of then would put the U2410 to sleep properly. The backlight would stay on, or "No Displayport Cable" would float around the Dell display with the backlighting still on. Or otherwise the Dell would try to go to sleep and then wake up again and cycle like you found.
Apples Mini DP to VGA adapter was sleep successful with the VGA cable (Analogue) but the output picture was not as sharp as DVI or Displayport, plus there was RF interference with the cable.
After lots of internet searching I have found a near perfect solution:
A HDMI to DVI cable with the HDMI end connected to the Ebay 3 in 1 adapter, which then connects to the Thunderbolt port.
Connect this to DVI-D 1 on the Dell U2410.
On the Dell in Menu - Other Settings,  disable DDC/CI
Now in OSX Settings - energy Saver you will have to tick:
"Put Hard Disks to sleep where possible" and select a short time frame for "Computer Sleep"
I have found that the display would go black but the backlighting on the Dell U2410 would stay on, when the display went to sleep on the Mac as per the Energy Saver "Display Sleep" setting.
The backlighting on the Dell would only turn off when the time for 'Computer Sleep" has elapsed and the external Thunderbolt hard disk went to sleep as well.
The Dell U2410 would then wake up correctly as well when my iMac woke, with this setup.
Cheapest solution for you would be to try an Apple or Ebay HDMI to DVI adapter and then use the DVI - DVI cable that came with the Dell.
If that fails get the 3 in one Adapter and use my Mini DP/Thunderbolt to Ebay Adapter to DVI-DVI cable setup.
I'm assuming your new Macbook Pro comes with the HDMI port ?
I believe the Sleep Issues with this monitor are all related to appropriate signal on the cable, and only the HDMI to DVI solution will work correctly on Mac's connected to the Dell U2410.
    Good Luck. :-)

  • Waking from sleep issues

Hi, I have a 17" G-5 i-sight imac, running os 10.4.8, and have been having wake from sleep issues similar to what others have posted. These first showed up in late August. About 25 % of the time, when waking the computer from sleep the screen remains black, and after about 10 seconds the fan starts running at full speed, The only way to stop this is to hold in the power key until the computer shuts down, and then restart. What's interesting is that this only seems to happen using my apple wireless keyboard and mouse; when using a usb keyboard and mouse there is no problem. Could this be a bluetooth-related problem? The bluetooth settings are all correct (allow bluetooth device to wake computer, etc). The apple care guy basically said he didn't know how to help me, and it's driving me crazy! The only wired keyboard/mouse I have is from my 233 bondi blue imac, so just using that to avoid the problem is not a good option. Please help!
    Jerry

If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following line:
    reset-nvram
press the return key on your keyboard
    set-defaults
    press return
    reset-all
    press return
Your Mac will reboot. Once it's running, put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong.
Still didn't work? Might be time to call AppleCare or see an Apple Genius or a technician.
    Cheers!

  • Pb 12" 1.3 GHz sleep issues

To any and all that may advise:
    pb 12" 1.3 GHz 512 MB
    OS 10.4.2
Recently my pb has been having intermittent sleep issues. I have tried resetting the power manager, and this has not resolved this issue. AHT gives all green lights for hardware operation, so I'm thinking this is a software/open firmware issue. When I close the display to sleep the machine, it appears to sleep normally, with the flashing led indicator in the latch, yet when trying to wake from this state sometimes I get a blank screen with no action at all, i.e. it will not wake normally. This issue seems to be time related, in that I can sleep the machine momentarily i.e. close the lid, sleep the computer and within 5 minutes it behaves normally. In other cases i.e. longer than 5 minutes, it wakes to the black screen.
I have had colleagues that have complained of similar issues with their pb's and I curious as to how I might resolve this issue, and if there are many of us out there with a similar issue. So far, I've had 5 people who have complained of similar problems in my small circle of mac using friends! Any help and advice on how to ascertain if this is hardware or software would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time and efforts here.
    Sincerely,
    Sean

Unless you are no longer under warranty, I would suggest calling Apple Care. Ask to speak to a product specialist, and they should have a good idea of how to fix the issue. I have never encountered this issue myself so I cannot help you directly, but usually if anyone has a solution it's going to be Apple.

  • "Disable Screen Saver" hot corner no longer prevents Display Sleep

I am not sure whether it started only after I upgraded to 10.5.7, but I certainly have this very annoying issue right now.
I have "Disable Screen Saver" assigned to the top right "hot corner". Some time ago I could place my mouse pointer there in order to prevent activating of "Display Sleep" (as well as gradually dimming before jumping into bed).
It no longer works. I have my pointer in the right corner, and nevertheless the display first dims, then goes to sleep.
Is this only my problem? Any ideas how to fix it? Thanks!

    Anybody?

  • Visualizer won't prevent display sleep?

I've seen other posts related to this but haven't found the exact issue, so here goes (and thanks in advance for your insights):
Instead of using appleTV, I hardwired my nice, huge sony tv to my macpro with a DVI-to-HDMI cable.  I did this because I like to have the iTunes visualizer running during parties and such (because, APPLE, the ATV won't freaking do it!)
The problem is that the iTunes visualizer apparently doesn't count as "activity," and the displays (including my tv) go to sleep after the interval that I've set in system preferences for display sleep.
I know that I can fix this by simply changing my system preferences when I intend to use my TV in this way, and I know that this isn't hard to do.  But I want to make sure that there isn't an option that I've missed.
Is there a way to tell the OS, one time and permanently, not to put the display(s) to sleep if the visualizer is running?
    Thanks again y'all!

The same thing happens on both my MacBook Pro (15", late 2011) and Mac Mini running Mavericks. After the screen saver appears, the computer's display won't sleep if the Playstation DualShock 3 controller is either plugged in (via USB) or connected via Bluetooth.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I noticed that my controller is sending a bunch of data that's not related to any physical button or axis.

  • MBP15 Retina: Cant wake from Display Sleep

I've bought my MBP15 with Retina a week or two ago.
You know how your display turns off after a minute of leaving you Mac idle?
When I touch the trackpad or any key on the keyboard to log back in, the display turns back on for 1 second, then goes black again.
It continues to do this everytime I touch a key or the trackpad. Turns back on for 1 second, then turns off again. I can't log in, and have to force-shutoff the Mac to get back in.
This is very unfortunate, as I'm from Guatemala. We don't have Apple Stores here. So I can't just walk in and get it serviced.
Anyone has a solution? I've already done a permission fix on the Disk Utility, to no avail.
+ If I close the lid to make it sleep, then open it up again, it turns back on no proble. It's only when the display sleeps.
    Thanks so much everyone.

    Hi Nikolaus
I have the same issue. Having got myself in the habit of a quick swipe across the Magic Trackpad to reawaken my external 27" display from display sleep, this bug is very annoying. It happens for me when connected to AC power, so the problem is not restricted to running off battery power.
I shall report this as (another) Lion bug here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Please feel free to add your own complaint, too - the more the merrier

  • Watching dvds in front row = displays sleeps

hi all - i gots the following problem
watching dvds in front row = displays sleeps - or at least dulls back until i use the trackpad to wake it
i assumed that this would not be issue with front row as it would be obvious that i wanted the dvd shown full screen - any ideas?

Wow, I never found this before. I played the dvd in front row on best performance (battery setting) and the display went black. I closed front row and opened it in dvd player and it played for 15 min and never went black.
Any way I went into energy saver and adjusted custom to never turn off display then opened front row. That seems to have worked.

  • Power/sleep issues after upgrading to 10.8.5

    mac mini
    2.6 GHz intel core i7
    512 SSD
    16 GB RAM
everything was working beautifully for quite a long time, in fact, i've never had any issues at all.  upgraded to 10.8.5 build 12F37 last night and now the computer won't wake from sleep.  it has to be forced off and then restarted in order to get it to "come back".
reset the PRAM and the SMC, i'm hoping that resolves the issue, but i'd love to hear if anyone else is having the same issue and how they solved it.
    thanks!

Also it happens without the MBOX 2 connected, which is USB audio interface by the way, and with just a Seagate external USB 3 Drive connected, which I use for backing up and has worked fine without these sleep issues up to 10.8.4.
So it is like this...you put the computer to sleep, it goes to sleep, external drive spins off, after a few seconds external drive spins on again for no reason, display stays in sleep, but not rest of the system, as when you wake up a good indication to see whether it has woken up from deep sleep or just display sleep is that if you had wifi on and connected, when it wakes up now it is always connected to wifi, whereas when normally the imac wakes up from deep sleep the wifi connection(just the connection not the wifi interface) is off and is looking for it and connecting to it after you have woken it up. Something totally going wrong with the power management since 10.8.5, no doubt. Ι initially had installed 108.5 from the software update window, done the combo update on top now, and still no change in this behaviour. Strange that it let's me install the 10.8.5 combo, as before, if you had installed the update, it would not let you do it again...Not sure about what this is...
I had different but still sleep issues with an imac late 2009 i7 27inch, after a certain update in Snow Leopard, where again I had done the update through the software update window, instead of downloading the combo one...back then it was that it wouldn't actually go to deep sleep, just display sleep.
It is so frustrating that this happens. The biggest issue is that if you leave the computer supposedly at this sleep for a long time it does not wake up from the mouse or elsewhere...!!!!
And another update, removing the Seagate MyBackup(USB 3) or whatever it is called, putting the computer to sleep, and waking up, it does actually behave as it should, it wakes up and the wifi is looking for the connection and connects after a few seconds, it is not connected as when you have a USB device connected(the MBOX 2 or the Seagate external USB 3 drive in my case) which it seems wakes up the computer from deep sleep(which means it is on and the wifi connects in the background)immediately after a few moments you put it to sleep(observation is that MBOX keeps on going on and off sleep as led's go off and on at regular intervals and the same seems to happen with the external drive....).
The cure...in Snow Leopard with the sleep problems after an update, was to re-install leopard and do the combo update, meaning re-installing the whole system, which is quite a pain in the back side. I hope this is not the case in Mountain Lion otherwise we should be compensated for Apple ruining our system and organisation. The only cure I see for the minute and I am not sure if it will work is to revert to an earlier Time-Machine Backup which was made when the system was still in 10.8.4. And if this works, I will not do the 10.8.5 stnadalone or combo update until Apple start becoming serious with us, and not mess with our work and computers which they sold to us as the perfect machines...
On another note my 27" i7 2012 imac had also these backlight uniformity problems, where part of the screen is slightly darker(on the right hand side, nothing major but noticeable as the same colour has a different hue in the brighetr area of the screen) so I am quite fed up with this drop in QC at Apple, not only in hardware but in software...I am currently waiting for a replacement, but this is nothing to do with this update.
I seriously hope that they release 10.8.6 soon and that it will solve these issues which people who installed 10.8.5 already are experiencing. In fact even their suggestion, if it will be one, let's see, for people to consider going to an earlier backup where the system worked fine(what I am considering to do now), will be unreasonable and undermine their ability to create problem free updates and software which affect basic functions of the system such as sleep, and they will have no excuse, as it is not us who did something wrong to our system, it is their update which they fed to our systems through their software update, and let's say as the ordinary mac user thought it would be good to do...so there is an element of fooling people there as well...What if someone just bought their mac recently and did not have a backup but had already set up(customised) their system to a signinicant degree before the 10.8.5 update? I believe that we should be covered and compensated for such things, as I have lost time and money dealing with these issues in the past.
Don't they properly test these updates, with all their fleet of different mac models, testing them with general peripherals connected to them, that people normally use, such as USB DEVICES, Audio Interfaces, External USB Drives? Come on they make billions for god's sake. We're spending 2 grand on a system that is touted as heaven on earth and it does many things brilliantly, but does fail on some, and what I really get is all these ridiculous issues every now and then which make me lose time and money, as I just want to have a system that sleeps and wakes properly!!!!!!! I AM NOT HAPPY, and it is Apple's Programmers which messed it up for me again...No bonuses this month please.

  • Multipoint Server 2012 - Display Sleep

I have several WMS 2012 boxes with Atrust m300 zero clients. I am having an issue since upgrading from WMS 2011 that my zero clients displays don't sleep. The direct connected ps/2 stations display will sleep, but all other clients won't.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn690048.aspx
Per this technet article it sounds like I would need to enable the SessionIdleTimeout regkey to disconnect the idle sessions. I have enabled this key, but it does not appear to be doing anything on my multipoint server.
I guess my question is does anyone with USB attached zero clients have display sleep working in some fashion?

Windows Multipoint Server is not a supported platform at this time. See http://www.novell.com/support/kb/doc.php?id=7006589.

The issue we are having is that the WmsShell account should be logging
