Display turns off when booting from CD

I have a 15-inch Powerbook. I need to reload the OS because my son changed the password and I need to reset it. But when I press "c" at the startup, the screen goes black. It does the same thing when I try to load open firmware at startup. Any ideas of how to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you soooo much! Pressing the command button launched the startup manager, where I was able to choose to start from CD manually. I didn't know about startup manager. Thanks again.

  • Macbook display turns off when booting Snow Leopard DVD

I have mid-2009 Macbook Pro and I hate Mountain Lion. I want to do a clean install of Leopard using the DVD (grey) that came with my computer. I loaned it to a friend recently and he had no issues. But everytime i try to boot from the SL DVD (hold C at startup) it behaves normally, until about the time it would go into the DVD startup screen. At that point the display turns off (not the whole computer, just the display) as if it has gone to sleep. And I can't get it to turn on again. I've also tried booting and holding Option and choosing the DVD as the boot drive. No dice.
Awhile back I created a Lion install DVD. I can boot to it just fine. But i don't want Lion either. Any ideas why this is happening?  Thanks!

Press control shift eject, then any key to toggle the display from sleep/wake.

  • Display turns off when i am talking

Display turns off when i am talking (emidiatly) - when conversation is terminated display is working back again - if i plugin  headphones evrything work fine
I restored  the device twice nothing helps.

The display is supposed to turn off when you hold the phone to your ear (so your ear doesn't touch any controls). If it happens when you are not holding it to your ear this usually means that your case is covering the sensor that turns it off when you hold it to your ear.

  • External display turns off when macbook isn't charging...

I have my old 2007 white Macbook hooked up to an external display. Recently I have been wanting to calibrate  the battery while using it on the external display, but every time I remove the charger from the Macbook the external display will stay on for a couple of seconds then turn off, it will only come back on when I click the mouse or press something on the keyboard, but then it will go back to sleep. Note: when my Macbook is connected to the external display I keep the screen closed.

When you are looking at the displays in the System Prefs, all you have to do is click and drag the tiny rectangular bar from the main screen to the external monitor screen (this designates the primary monitor).
Once you've done that, all you have to do is close the lid. Your screen will flash a couple times, but the external monitor will then remain on and working, and you dont need to keep your lid open.
FYI, I would turn down the brightness of your MBP down all the way (for both the screen and keyboard). I have found that this reduces any heat build up that it may have from running with a closed lid.
    Hope this helps!

  • Back light remains on when display turns off when on battery

    Hi,
Sorry for the long subject line, but it basically sums up the issue.
I'm using Windows 7 64-bit on a T61 with nVidia Quadro NVS 140M discrete graphics. I installed the latest Windows 7 drivers from Lenovo, including the driver for the video card. This was a completely fresh install of Windows 7.
Everything seems to be running great, with the exception of the LCD back light when I'm on battery. I have the power settings set to "turn off display" after five minutes. When I idle for five minutes the display indeed goes "black", but I can still see it "lit".
With the back light still active I'm having to close my lid to ensure my battery lasts a decent amount of time.
Has anyone else experienced this on Windows 7 and better yet know how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance.

Could be any number of things.  Something failed on the monitor (power supply perphas).  Maybe the cable fatigued and a wire broke inside.  Maybe your video card has failed.
In other words, too many variables.  You need to eliminate them as best yo can.  Try the monitor on a different computer.  Try a different cable and/or check cable connections.   Try another monitor on your computer.
Try a smc reset but it probably won't change anything.

  • Airport Card turned off when resuming from sleep - New since 10.6.6

I use safe sleep regularly, as I use my laptop at both work and home. Ever since the update to 10.6.6 though, I have had to manually turn my Airport connection back on after resuming from sleep.
Previously, although it was unreliable about connecting to a preferred network (an unrelated, but equally frustrating issue*) at least it would remain on. Now I've had to add the icon to my Menu bar just so I don't have to dig into System Preferences every single time I reawaken my laptop.
Does anyone know why this is happening, and if there is anything I can do to prevent it? I apologize if this has been asked before, but when I searched I was unable to find anything.
*This issue is unrelated and not the focus of my post, but if you happen to know about it I would absolutely appreciate your input.
When resuming from sleep, despite being between 5-20 feet from my preferred router I will often receive a dialog asking me to select from a list of SSIDs and enter a password even though that information is already saved. Then, once I complete this information Airport doesn't actually connect and the only way to resolve the issue is to turn Airport off and then back on. After this, it will automatically connect with no problems and remain connected until I put the computer into Sleep mode again.

Maybe check in your keychain and verify the password saved is correct for your wireless router?
Do you broadcast the network name?
Could you describe "unreliable about connecting to a preferred network"?
Is "use secure virtual memory" checked in the Security preference pane? If so try unchecking that maybe? If it's a hibernation issue sometimes that could cause weirdness.

  • MBP display turns off when external monitor is attached

    Hi there,
Over the last few days I have been trying to get Windows 7 to work with an external monitor. I am running a Mid 2012 15" Macbook Pro with a Nvidia GeForce GT 650M GPU. I sucessfully installed windows 7 in bootcamp and everything worked flawlessly until I try to connect my monitor with the mini displayport via a VGA <-> Displayport adaptor. When I connect it the monitor powers on, with the windows desktop and is responsive but the mouse dissapears and the MacBook Pro's monitor turns off. The mouse is still useable but invisible, so its very difficult to do anything. I have tried to update the Nvidia drivers as well as  trying everything I can think of and haven't been able to  find a solution. Has anyone else out there exerinced this, or found a solution?

Okay, so a little update. I have determined that the problem is the nvidia driver. When I roll back the driver to the "Microsoft Basic Display Adaptor" driver and connect the monitor then it behaves as excpected. The external monitor isn't detected and everything continues to work properly.
So is there anyone out there who is running a Mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro with an external monitor in either Windows 7 or 8.1? If so please let me know what your setup is and what driver version you are using. This is driving me crazy. Thanks.

  • Tungsten T3 turns off when removed from cradle

When in the cradle the battery shows as 100% charged. As soon as you pull the T3 from the cradle it turns off and can not be turned on. tried hard reset. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Post relates to: Tungsten T3

Sounds like your battery has failed.
You could try an "in-cradle reset" to recalibrate any possible life left in it, but with the age of the device I'm guessing it's just kaput!
Press the Reset button while it's charging in the cradle then leave it alone for a few hours.
If still no joy, batteries and repair can be found at usedpdaparts.com or directfix.com.  If you're a DIY type of person, there are videos on directfix.com that show you how to do the battery replacement yourself.

  • IPhone 3G Screen turns off when lowering from ear during call

I have my 3rd iPhone; bought it yesterday (last one stolen in Denver Airport). The screen works normally when using the functions other than the phone. When making a call everything is normal but when I put the phone to my ear, I have noticed that the screen does not turn off, however, when lowering the phone to look at the screen during the call, it goes completely blank despite the call still being connected. I tried pushing all the buttons to no avail. I did a reset and also a software restore without success. I discovered that when I lowered the phone during a call and the screen goes blank, I put my warm thumb over the little horizontal sensor above the screen and it would come back on. If I released my thumb it would turn off (the exact opposite of what should happen). I called apple, they said to return the phone because there probably is a hardware issue. I bought it at an ATT store in Santa Barbara, CA; I am told there is a restocking fee to replace the phone!! Amazing, buy a new product, its defective, return it for a new one, and they extract $20 additional dollars from you. Anyone else with a similar problem.

If it is not in a case and it is defective the only way that the AT&T store will swap out the phone for a new one without the restocking fee is if it's under 14 days. After the 14 days you have to bring it to an Apple store for repair or a replacement. I recommend purchasing the iCare warranty through apple, because it will extend the warranty to 2 years on the phone, and when your phone breaks the apple store will replace it on the spot if they can't repair it in the store instead of sending it out for repair and you waiting for it.

  • MacBook Pro turns off when unplugged from outlet

I have a MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo 2.26GHz
2 days ago when I unplugged it from the wall it shut off. It has been doing this since even though the battery is fully charged.
Once it is off I am able to turn it back on not plugged in and use it for the full length of the battery without problem.
Anyone would know what would cause this? and how to fix it?
    Thx

I would try the SMC reset.

  • IMac display turns off automatically.

    Hi everyone!
I have a problem with my iMac. The display automatically turns off while using the computer and I can't continue using it without forcing it going to sleep. The display turns off when the screen brightness is NOT at maximum level. If I reduce the brightness, the screen turns off. If the display it's at the maximum level, no problem, works perfect. No matter if the computer is just turned on from a cold start or if it's running since hours with high temperatures. In System Preferences there's only one option selected in the Enegy Saver section (Allow power button to sleep the computer).
Any ideas?  It's really annoying working with this problem (especially at night with the brightness at maximum).
    Hope somebody can help me!

  • Mac display turns off?

    Hello everyone,
I don't understand why my Mac display turns of automatically when another electronic device is brought near it. The system is still running but the display just goes black and Mac logs the user out. The other day I got off the phone while working and I put the phone on the left side of the Mac just above the speakers and display went black. I pressed the keys but in vain. I removed the phone and put it back in the dock. The display comes back to life with me logged out.
The happened many times after it and before the incident but the thing I observed it, the display turns off when an electronic device is brought near it. The weird thing, it turned off when I put the Mag Safe pin on the speaker noticing that the power is full. Is it due to some kind of interference of the Mag Safe's(other devices) magnetic field with Mac's power ciruits? I also noticed that this happens only when the device in context is on or plugged in. I just want to make sure that thats the reason or my Mac has some problem!!

You should call Apple service number they will surely help you. You should find it in your computer's documentation. Good luck!

  • 8330 display not turning off when holstered.

    Hi,
Last week for some unknown reason, my 8330 no longer shuts the display off when holstered.  Additionally, the display no longer turns on when removed from the holster - I have to push the on/off key to turn the display on.  The holster is a genuine BlackBerry holster and the magnet is still very strong and intact.  Any suggestions as to why this has happened would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried a Battery Pull:
    1. Remove the battery while phone is turned on
    2. Wait a few seconds before inserting it again
    3. Allow the long boot up process to finish (takes a few minutes usually)
This clears most software issues that occur on blackberries from time to time. You could also use Quickpull, a free app that simulates a battery pull without physically removing the battery: http://store.berryreview.com/product.asp?id=27660&n=QuickPull-Free
A battery pull reclaims memory lost during application usage and clears minor software errors that creep in over time. The blackberry runs an OS just like your PC runs windows and the battery pull is the equivalent of a reboot/restart on your computer.
What device OS are you running? Options>About, 3rd line down says v4.x.x.xxx?
    Cheers,
    Kijana
