Displaying NEF thumbnails in File Open Window

I have Photoshop Elements 10 with Camera Raw 6.6.
When opening a file directly from the camera (Nikon D7000) all the raw .NEF images are rendered in the open dialogue window.
But once the files are transferred to my computer, when opening the same files from the computer the .NEF files only display as icons in the window. When you select one, it is rendered as an image by itself in the footer.
Is there any way of having the .NEF files rendered as images in the open window when opening from the computer disk ?
This is a convenient feature for selecting images to work on, that is supported by other software (e.g. Picasa) and, as I recall, earlier versions of PE did it for previous NEF formats .
Thank you

I’m using Windows 7 ultimate with Photoshop CC. The NEF files are from a Nikon D-200 camera so it’s not a new camera.
Anything you can pass along will be helpful. I shoot with both raw and jpg so can see what the nef file subject matter is by looking at the jpg file, but it would be convenient to see a thumbnail of the nef file when I try to open the files

As much as any of us don't like paying for what we think Adobe or Microsoft should have supplied, the fact is it won't happen despite years of some of the most bile-filled threads on the subject.
I'm in the "pay the $20 and get on with life" camp.
Ardfrey provides PSB, INDD, and AI thumbs in their codec as well.
And now Mac users have Quicklook. PSD and PSB thumbs at the Finder level.

I use a cad cam software that allows you to create, edit and manage the links on the left hand side of the File>Open window.  This is the area that usually contains "My Recent Files" "Desktop"  "My Documents" etc.
The ability to change and manage these links is great as it gives you the freedom to setup links that you use all of the time right there and easy to get at.  I attached a screen shot of what Mastercam's look like.
It would be great to see this feature in Photoshop!

  • Photoshop CS4 (11.0.2) crashes when file opens (Windows 7 x64 Pro)

Did a recent install of Windows 7 x64 Pro and installed Adobe Web Suite and updated all adobe programs. When I use photoshop to open a file, the file opens then photoshop hangs and windows says it has stopped responding then closes. This is a fresh install of windows...
I used drivermax to backup drivers from a previous install and install those drivers on the new install. After that I installed the newest graphics drivers via nvidia's website.
I installed all updates for the suite then I cleared my preferences, none of this worked.
Please let me know where I can find the crash log and any other logs so I can post that info here.

I would do exactly as Curt suggests, and check out Event Viewer. This ARTICLE goes into more detail about what to look for. Be sure to follow every link, in every warning, or error message. Do not get frustrated with warning and error messages, that are 100% code - just look for one written in words that you can understand, and especially with any, that have links.
    Good luck,

  • File open window closes

for the last week or two, if I want to attach a file to an email in thunderbird, the finder window opens and closed after about 1 second, before I have had a chance to select a file.  The only way to attach a file is to drag into the window from a separate finder window.  Similarly, the 'file...open' dialogues in firefox and safari do the same, but not in chrome.  However when asked what application to open a specific file type, a finder window opens and closes immediatey - for instance I can't get downloaded files such as getfile.aspx to open in adobe reader as is their target because I can't set the target because the finder window won't stay open.
this seems to be a macOS problem since it exists in safari, thunderbird, as well as firefox.
    any clues from out there?
    thanks,

I think it's a good idea to check with Nikon; while you're talking to them, ask what format their cameras' videos are - from what I've read, AVI is not the actual format it's recorded in, but I'm not an expert on that - see the link to the Wikipedia article:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AudioVideoInterleave
Also try to shoot another video in a lower resolution - don't process or do anything to it with the camera, just take out the SDHC card and see if that'll work. I suggested the MPEGStreamclip because if you can drag it into that app, you could immediately convert it to a .mov or .dv file and that should work with either Quicktime, iMovie, or whatever.
At this point, you also might want to consider trashing any preference file of any application you've tried using with that video just in case any of them have become corrupted.

  • .wmv files opening Windows Media Player

I put simple links on my web pages to allow visitors to load
wmv format videos on their pcs. I do not want the video starting
automatically with any player, I just want the "save to" window
opening at the click on the links. Actually this is working with
Firefox but not with Explorer. What do I have to do to avoid the
videos opening automatically in Explorer ? Thanks

    Two options:
    1) Zip the media file/s. When visitor clicks on a link to a
    zipped file or
    folder, it will download.
    2) Use a force-download script in a language supported by
    your server. The

  • Until a week ago my upper panel used to have A. a back arrow B. a google box, now to do the same thing, I have to to file, open window!!

how do I get these important features back? as far as I know, firefox didn't upgrade itself while I wasn't looking.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: command+Shift+F).
Press F10 or tap the Alt key to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily if the Menu Bar is hidden.
Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"
    * If items are missing then open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"
    * If a missing item is in the toolbar palette then drag it back from the Customize window on the toolbar
    * If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up.

  • The File/Open settings

    Hi there,
The default appearance of my File/Open and File/Save window has changed, and I neither know how nor do I know how to change it back.
The problem is that when I File/Save, it would open the File/Save window and display the folders/files by in a List (vs Thumbnail, Detail, etc.) by Name, which is what I desire.
But, somehow that changed. When I open the File/Save (or File/Open) window, the display is now in a List (which is prefered) by Date with the most recent at the top. This is definitely not my preference and is a setback to certain tasks I do.
I reset my defaults by doing alt-ctrl-shift upon start-up, but that has not affected my File/Save-File/Open window.
Can anyone tell me how to get back to where I was before? I am somewhat desparate for this fix and have no idea how it changed. So, heck, if anyone knows certain keystrokes I might have inadverdently hit that affected the change in the first place, I'd love to know what they are do I don't duplicate them!
    I am on Photoshop CS3.
    Thanks! I appreciate your help!

Thanks for the reply! It turned out that "Version Cue" was enabled, so I disabled it. However, the same problem still occurs. My "File/Open" does not open sorted by name. And my "File/Save As" functions also are not sorted as they had been in the past. I think they are sorting by type, not name. I simply want to find the place that tells Photoshop what the default sort should be.
It has always been unclear to me how Photoshop decides what view to give me when I want to open or save a file. Sometimes it opens to a view that I was just saving to or opening from, and sometimes it goes back to My Pictures.
And I erred before. I have Photoshop CS2, not CS3.
    Looking forward...

  • Office for the Mac - file open slowness, freeze, or crash

When I select the File - Open window, any of the Office programs take a few minutes to display all of my files in the Documents folder. When they are finally displayed, any attempt to scroll through the list or go to a specific file results in the Mac's spinning wheel being displayed. Quite often, nothing happens after the wheel stops spinning. Sometimes, it just continues to spin. Consequently, it is almost impossible to use the File - Open window in Office to select a file to open. The only way I can do so is to use Finder to display my files in the Documents folder and then selecting them in that program's File - Open window.
When the wheel is spinning, Force Quit says that the specific Office program being used is "not responding." Usually, I use Force Quit to close down the Office program if it has frozen, crashed, or been slow using the File Open window.
I spent an hour yesterday with Microsoft Support on the problem. The conclusion of the tech was that I had too many files in my Documents folder. I pointed out that other programs such as FileMaker Pro didn't have this problem. The tech's response was that Office has to scan the entire Documents folder every time the File Open window is opened, but that FileMaker Pro stores a list of the last files in the Documents folder and doesn't rebuild the list every time.
I am skeptical of this "answer." The problem didn't exist until a few months ago.
My computer is a MacBook Pro 2.3gHz with 16 GB of RAM and a 750GB hard drive which has about 500GB free. This is a fairly fast machine with a Geekspeed of 10688. I was running the latest Mac OS Yosemite 10.10.1. The problem first surfaced with Office for the Mac 2008 about 3-4 months ago running Mac OS 10.10.1. I installed Office 365 yesterday, and and Mac OS Yosemite 10.10.2 today, and nothing changed.
The only solution that I know of is to take a lot of time to segregate my files in the Documents folder into more subfolders (I already have quite a few). That I am loath to do, because the solution doesn't work very well. It takes about a minute to select a subfolder in the File Open window, and then about another 30 seconds before Office allows me to scroll through a relatively small number of files (e.g., 100 files) in the subfolder.
When this question was posted to the Microsoft Community, I was directed to an article talking about problems with Office and Mac OS. None of the solutions worked, probably because the article considered only Office X and Office 2004 for the Mac and OS 10.2 and 10.3.
    Help, please!

    1) Verify that Office is fully updated. v14.4.7
    2) I suggest you run Font Book and vailidate your Fonts. Microsoft installs duplicate fonts and after you clean up your fonts, this has often fixed odd issues with Office.
Office 2011 Duplicate Fonts to Delete
    3) Delete the com.apple.LaunchServices file in your User's Library/Preferences folder. Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar and test. More info
    If this fails to fix....
Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.
Put a few test files in the Shared folder. Data in the Shared folder can be accessed by another User. When you "Switch Users", you can access the files in the shared folder. After you log into the new test User, drag from Shared (it actually copies). Put the test files in Documents.
Open Word. It won’t be in the Dock in the new User. Go to Applications to open.
Do you still see the issue?
If yes, you can eliminate the number of files in your Documents folder.
If no, then you might want to do a clean up in Documents.
*Remember to drag files back from Shared when you log into your main User.

  • Seeing all open windows in 10.7

I just upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5. I miss being able to use a hot corner to see all open windows. I cannot find that in 10.7. Does anyone know where it is?

Thank you, brenden dv. I found that and used the hot corners to show the windows open, grouped by application. One thing that confused me was that the Help Center window stayed front and center, even though I was clicking on other windows. When I closed that window, then the correct application window opened up front.
However, the problem remains that all the windows are grouped by application, and it is almost impossible to tell which window is which when I have 3 or 4 windows open from one application, since they are stacked so tightly on top of one another. This means that I often cannot get to the window I want.
Grouping windows by application makes no sense from a user point of view. When I want to get to a certain file, I do not think, "Oh, that is a Word doc, I better get to Word." No, I just want to see my doc and click on it. Who still organizes all their files by the application that created it? No one I know.
OS 10.6.8 had a hot corner that showed icons or large thumbnails of all open windows, all shown separately on the desktop, so all one had to do was go to the hot corner, find the window and click on it, and voilå, that was your window, front and center. I cannot find that in 10.7.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Detail info in file/open

I understand we no longer get thumbnails in file/open (thankyou apple and microsoft). But what happened to the detail panel for tiffs? I see it for jpegs (like who works with jpegs anymore). But not for tiffs. I have photoshop CS6 and am on Windows XP.  I have the file/open function set for 'list.' I find setting it for anything else too cumbersome. And toggling bk and forth between file/open in photoshop and bridge is beyond cumbersome. How is this an improvement?

Oh well, I see you are viewing info for tif images and I can't but, as you said, it may be an XP vs Windows 7 issue...were you viewing this using Windows 7 or are you on a mac, which is a whole different ballgame?. The thumbnails accessable for 'list' view in all previous versions of Photoshop did the trick for me on another level. Using 'thumbnail' view doesn't work...it takes forever to load. I could use 'detail' view but I really like to see as many images listed as possible. So I use 'list' view.
Oddly, I get the information for jpeg images when hovering over an image name in 'list' view, but not for tiff images. That was what I was asking about...hoping that there might be some setting in photoshop. Actually, with all previous versions of Photoshop, hovering over an image name gave me a thumbnail, which I understand is now not accessable because of some dustup with apple and microsoft. As for the information, indeed, it is the same with CS5...I can see the info for jpegs but not tiffs.
It's a shame I've lost a valuable function and can't make something else fill in. As they say, it's not a bug it's a feature. Well, I will be upgrading to Windows 7 soon, which may solve some of my issues. I have Windows 7 on my laptop (but not CS6 because it's not powerful enough to support the program). I'll have to check out the info feature there.
I appreciate you folks being there for these questions. Between this, my new tablet and soon a new phone, it's info/tech overload at the moment for me.

  • Bridge CS3 Stopped showing NEF thumbnails

I use a Nikon, formerly a D70, now a D90. I always shoot in raw and JPEG. I have had Bridge CS3 on my iMac for about a year and a half with no problem. About a week ago it stopped displaying NEF thumbnails. I just see the NEF icon. I can open the NEF images, and JPEG images show as thumbnails. To my knowledge I have not changed anything, although my son sometimes changes some settings. I have my computer set to automatically download updates. Reviewing the threads in this forum I see some similar problems, but not this one. Anybody have an idea?

I have ACR 4.6.030. I do not see a 4.7 on the ACR updates. The next appears to be 5.1, which is for CS4, no CS3. I appreciate your input. If you have any other ideas I would be interested. I still have not been able to get it to work. Very odd, since I had always been able to see NEF thumbnails, taken both by the D70 and D90.

For sideloaded content the nook pulls the metadata from ePub file itself.  I would suggest looking at a program like Sigil or Calibre that will let you edit the metadata in the book to make it appear like you want.
For the PDF vs ePub - No, that's the way PDFs work (think of them as graphics, not text), wheres ePubs are Web Pages - so  no you can't them to behave exactly alike without converting the files.

  • Have CS 5 Installed on my iMac and works ok. But installed on my new MacBook Pro it won't open NEF files from my Nikon D810. Displays NEF icons, but when I try and open them the response is: Make sure latest RAW updates are installed. If problem persists

Have CS 5 Installed on my iMac and works ok. But installed on my new MacBook Pro it won't open NEF files from my Nikon D810. Displays NEF icons, but when I try and open them the response is: Make sure latest RAW updates are installed. If problem persists follow link: http://www.adobe.com/go/kb407111. Have installed Bridge 5.0.2.4; Raw Ref Version 7.0.0.308; DNG converter_8_7_1.dmg; Bridge 5.0.2 Update 2. Also same problem with Lightroom which I don't normally use. Lightroom_3_LS11_mac_3_6.dmg installed.

In the link you posted it states that the Nikon 810 requires ACR 8.6 or newer.
Version of ACR are specific to versions of Photoshop. You cannot use 8.6 nor even 7.0.in CS5.
I believe that ACR 6.7 is the latest that will work with CS5, so make sure you have this installed and get rid of ACR 7.
Having 2 versions of ACR will cause problems.
You have already downloaded DNG Converter 8.7.1.
Have you double clicked the DMG file to allow you to install DNG Converter on your computer?
Be aware that DNG converter is a stand-along application and not a plug-in.
You need to open DNG converter at select the FOLDER that contain your .NEF files.
Don't open the folder and try to select individual files, it doesn't work that way.
After converting your D810 files to DNGs you can then open the DNGs in CS5
The problem is your camera didn't exist when CS5 & its version of ACR was developed.
i don't use Lightroom, but the list mentions Lightroom 5.6 as needed to open D819 so your 3.6 version of LR won't cut it.
