Distraught 12yo wants to return nano

I'll try to be brief- hard after 2 frustrating days. Son got his first iPod for xmas (2g 2nd gen.) iTunes 7.0 started to download, quit with an error box about C:\Doc and Settings... iTunesSetup[1].exe is not a valid Win32 application
(an error I saw posted more than once in here on Xmas Day)
Of course our iPod came with no cd backup of this program to install (WHY is that APPLE?) Got a friends cd with iTunes issued early in 2006, loaded it.. purchased some songs, uploaded cd's from home.. son went to download onto his iPod.. gee, that won't work cause 2nd gen iPod's need iTunes 7.0 BUT YOU'RE NOT TOLD THAT SINCE NO USER MANUALS COME WITH THE iPODS! For what we pay, why are they so cheap with basic support materials?!? (manuals, cd's)
Since I've yet to see a plausible answer to solve this "not a valid Win32 application" error,
HOW DO YOU GET A CD with the iTunes 7.0 ?? if I can upload it that way, perhaps my son's Christmas can still be salvaged without having to return the Nano and get a less expensive and sophisticated MP3 player that at least is simpler to download songs on to. (can you say Sandisk)
Sorry to sound bitter, but if you're a parent who's had a devastated child at some point, you'll understand.

Hi, I am new. I can help with the manual bit of your question. Most manuafacturers of electronics are posting their manuals in pdf format. It saves paper, cost and Co2 etc etc. here is the one for your nano
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/iPodnano_2nd_Gen_FeaturesGuide.pdf
or go to apple home page www.aaple.com, click on the support tab, click on the manuals tab
then click on your product ipod, click on 2nd gen nano and your will have a list of manuals, second one down should be iPod nano (2nd Gen) Features Guide (Manual), Click on this and it will download in pdf format for you to read on screen or print.
I am having fun with an 11 yro and a 2 gen shuffle. He loves it.
