.dmg problems

Hey good people,
I'm sure this is a silly question with an easy answer.. but nevertheless I have to ask it because I can't seem to figure it out by myself..
I got Virtual PC in a .dmg file, and want to install it. When I open the .dmg file it mounts up like it should and inside is a file 1.5GB without any file extension. I tried to open it, but it is not recognized by any program. I then tried to open it with Stuffit-expander, but it just starts up and shuts down again after a few seconds (I guess Stuffit doesn't understand that file eighter). I also tried to just drag (copy) the file out of the mounted .dmg volume, but still couldn't open it after that..
Does anybody have any ideas what I should do? Is it possible the file is an ISO file or something ...that I have to create a CD from it and install Virtual PC from that CD ??
Would appreciate any advice!
Thanks guys
Stian Andre

I agree with you that these forums should only be used to discuss issues of technical usage etc.
I'm glad you agree.
But I have to disagree with you when you're saying that I asked for assistance on stolen downloaded software.
Ummm... by your own admission, it was
What I wanted help on was to figure out how to deal with the .dmg file I had, because I'm not exactly sure about how they function yet, being a PC-person up until now. How I should extract or convert the information in them etc was the help I meant to ask for.
A .dmg file is a self mounting file. It is an image of a CD or DVD. When you double click it, the image is mounted; kinda like inserting a CD/DVD into your drive.
I obviously shouldn't have mentioned what it contained (that was a mistake I really agree on and I certainly see that my question is not expressing that intent), because that was what you focused on, comparing me with a common thief and all, witch I have to tell you I'm not.
What I focused on is discovering from where you got the .dmg file from. If it was from a legitimate source then I would have been able to further assist you by dowloading it myself and seeing if I could replicate the symptoms you were experiencing. Since the source was not legitimate there is nothing we can do to assist.
Anyways, I don't intend to turn this into a discussion about filesharing, because I see with your strong opinion that you have already made up your mind in that regard.
You are correct, I do have strong opinions on this. Theft is theft. One can try and disguise it or whatever but at the end of the day it is theft.
I'm sure you're a real rightful fella that has never downloaded a single mp3 or anything.
I have never obtained software or music via questionable means. Everything I have is fully registered.
All right, so to end this the right way I want to say that I didn't mean to bring down the quality of this discussion group with my question. I surely should have formulated my question in a different way! I'm sure most of you see that. I think these groups are awesome, even though some here are aggressively interested in criticizing genuinely well-meant asked questions.
Stian - when you download a file from a questionable source and, inveriably, encounter problems what do you expect us to say.
Your question about what is a .dmg file is legitimate. Part of the fault finding process though is to try and replicate the symptoms. There is no way that I, and I would contend others, would download a dodgy file from a dodgy source. The solution to your symptoms is to delete the .dmg file and buy Virtual PC. If you insist in continuing to download various files from questionable sources then expect to encounter problems.
My computers are very mission critical to me. They are used to provide solutions to my clients. That's how I earn my living. There is no way on this earth that would risk infecting them with dodgy files. Is your computer mission critical to you?

    hi,
i have a copy of adobe cs3 from my college, and i am having problems installing. i skipped the verification. and then i noticed it would only install about 3 components, not illus. photoshop, or flash, then i let the verify run, and then it came up with an error of "input/output error" how is it possible to save the files on the dvd, what are my options?
also, another sidenote, i have had a weird problem with i tunes, since 7.6.2 and my software is all up to date. if i run i tunes, it could be 10 secs or after about 10 mins. the pinwheel comes up and wont go away, how can i check in system monitor if theres somehting fishy, has anyone heard of this problem ? i was thinking to downgrade since i have not had problems until i upgraded

    HI Gene,
"This usually works fine but now and then I get an error that says " Unable to create disk1s10.dmg Input/output error." Have you downloaded and installed any 3rd party software or changed any preference files since you've successfully done this before ??
If your profile is correct, you might try updating from 10.4.8 to 10.4.11. If you do, make sure and Repair Disk Permissions when it's finished.

  • "Lightroom_4_LS11_mac_4_1.dmg" problem downloading

Why do I get a warning after downloading Lightroom 4 stating that the disk images "Lightroom_4_LS11_mac_4_1.dmg" is not recognized and coudn't be opened?  How do I fix this?

find another dmg file on your computer an click it.
if you do not see the same error message, your adobe dl is corrupt.  delete it and re-download.
if you do see the same error message, you have an os problem and could try:
Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With panel use the dropdown menu to select DiskImageMounter then click on the Change All button. If DiskImageMounter is not displayed in the dropdown menu then select Other. Navigate in the Open dialog to the /System/Library/CoreServices/ folder where you will find the application. Select then click on the Open button in the dialog.

  • Time Machine on WD MyCloud - DMG Problem

    Hello,
Recently I've bought an external drive: WD MyCloud, which is connected to my wireless router by ethernet so I can access it anywhere.
Inside of WD Software there is Time Machine options, I've just enabled and then I've set on OS X Time Machine on to the WD MyCloud.
The first "problem" is that is on DMG file and I'm not sure if its the best option, because when I use to backup up on TM to other external drive, the backup was made into normal folders and then I could just go to a specific date (without opening time machine functionality on OS X) and just restore a file.
Now I can't do anything with that DMG (not mount), but I'm able to access to files over TM functionality on OS X .
The second "problem" is that every 3 days it says me that TM needs to create a new backup to increase the "reliability" of the backups and when I access time machine to restore its like it restarted and deleted everything.
What am I doing wrong and how to fix it?
    Thank you in advance,
    Sílvio

Time Machine and the drive you bought are not compatible, if you want to use a NAS, use a Time Capsule.

  • Safari 5.0.6 Leopard DMG problem

I am currently running a few updates on my OSX 10.6.8 system, as listed in Software Update, to get ready for Lion.  I download the updates from the support downloads page rather than let Software Update perform the task.  It's just a thing I have about software updates.  Nothing personal against the automatic Software Update process.
On attempting to install Safari 5.0.6 and opening the Safari5.0.6Leopard.pkg it reports:
"Safari can't be installed on this computer. This update requires Mac OS X 10.5."  What????
    This is a bit weird.
I downloaded the dmg again, same problem.
Why would Software Update suggest that Safari5.0.6Leopard is required and then when I try to install it, report that I need OSX 10.5??

Thanks Carolyn, I was a ware that I have access to the App Store and can download Lion whenever I wish.  That is not the question here.
I'm running 10.6.8 already and Software Update listed (amongst other things) Safari5.0.6Leopard as an update irrespective of any desire I might have down the tack to instal Lion.  The fact that the update process then says that I need OSX 10.5 to install the update is the puzzle.
Is the text in the dialog error message wrong and should it be saying effectively that I need Lion installed first before Safari 5.0.6 can be installed???
    Beats the heck outta me.

  • Instaling ML on Macbook pro late 2008 from dmg problem

    Hello all
a friend of mine has a macbook pro late 2008 with snow leopard installed.
He wanted me to clean install the machine and install ML on it
i checked the requirements and i saw that this is possible
went on my mac mini and restored the image file to a usb stick and holding option key while booting i started the process
first erased the hard drive and then  back to main screen press install ML
the next screen after confirming that i agree  the dialog box was reading tyhe instalation files..it went throughh till the last bit and then just stuck there!
left it almost all night and nothing happened
Any ideaw on how to proceed?
Maybe the installation image that i have used is only for my mac mini and that is the reason that this happens?
a possible solution is to install snow leopard again and inform him to buy the software so as to be machoine specific from the mac app store?
Any help will be much appreciated
    Many thanks

Your friend has to purchase OS X Mountain Lion with his/her Apple ID. If you install OS X Mountain Lion without having purchased it with his/her Apple ID, he/she won't be able to reinstall OS X Mountain Lion if it gets damaged, so this is dangerous.
He/She must purchase OS X Mountain Lion, so he just have to open  > Software Update and install all available updates. Then, open App Store and purchase OS X Mountain Lion, so it will be downloaded into his/her MacBook and the Mountain Lion installer will show up when the download finishes, so just follow the steps to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
He/She should make a backup of his/her files with Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner before upgrading, and also, check if the applications are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com
The OS X Mountain Lion version used is the same for all Macs (except the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, and the Late 2012 Mac mini and iMac because of driver problems), so this is not a problem

  • Dmg's problem remains after 10.5.1 (and Help problems)

I did a download-and-install of the 10.5.1 update. Immediately after, loaded up some dmg's, and found that the problem with unmounting was not fixed in this round. Every few attempts, clcking on the eject icon in the Finder sidebar causes the window to vanish, and the dmg is not unmounted.
And, trying to use Finder Help, it was unresponsive.
I had Console open during all this, looking at the windowserver log; the dmg problem showed up as:
Nov 15 17:57:23 [99] kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGXGetWindowWorkspace: invalid window id: 5a
    Help's ailments shows up as:
Nov 15 18:06:53 [99] kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGXSetWindowListTags: Operation on a window 0x6 not owned by caller Help Viewer
Nov 15 18:09:55 [99] kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGXSetTrackingAreaOption : Invalid tracking area
Maybe after 10.5.2 this will go away??

Sorry to hear that. There seem to be several others with the same problems who have posted to this forum.
As for the window closing while trying to unmount, activate something other than the disk you want to unmount (say your internal hard drive), then click the eject button for the drive you want to unmount, this will at least keep the window open.
For unmounting, try the command line unmount solutions at
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5808848&#5808848
Perhaps the next update will fix it, so until then, leaving them mounted till the shutdown seems to be the solution (hopefully the command line fixes it for you).

  • Cannot mount anything after upgrade to 10.5.1 (external WD drive & .dmg)

Hi It's my first time here.
After I update My Imac G5 to leopard and run true many problems, thank to time machine because I had to restore my entire disk twice.
I update to the lastest level of Leopard 10.5.1. Since that update, Leopard doesn't see my extarnal disk WD 500GB and when it try to mount-it, there is errorlog that said it's not a good format. Also Leopard refuse to mount any .dmg file.
I download the 110MB 10.5.1 update because I tought the automatic download is not the same. But again, it refuse to mount the .dmg file!!!
Maybe I missed something basic here. I am realy stuck...
Any idea of what is the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Disk Utility crashes and dmg files won't mount

My girlfriend's Powerbook has been acting up for a while now, and we still can't seem to get it working properly.
One day, her Adobe programs just stopped working. Tried several things, but nothing worked and she ended up reinstalling OSX. That fixed the problem, but then she noticed she could no longer open DMG files. Accordingly, she tried to run Disk Utility but then found that it would always crash when trying to open.
She ran Disk Utility from the install disc, but nothing turned up. She also tried looking up several methods of fixing the DMG problem (deleting various files), but nothing's worked.
If I remember correctly, she also tried using the 10.3.9 combo updater some time ago, but that didn't help. We're actually not totally sure about that, so we're trying to reinstall the 10.3.9 combo updater, except for the fact that Apple has only made the file available as a DMG (which she obviously can't open).
So can anyone please help us get Disk Utility to stop crashing, and get those DMG files to open/mount? I have the crash logs but they're huge, so I'm not so sure if I should post them. Thanks everyone!
PS. I can open DMG files for her using MagicISO (I'm on a PC), but it's a bit of a pain transferring those larger files to her.
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

What files did you try deleting? If you don't know what a file does or why you're messing around with it, you shouldn't; that's just asking for trouble.
Let's assume for the moment that you have a corrupted preferences file. To find out, go to Users/Library/Preferences and locate the com.apple.DiskUtility.plist file and drag it to the Desktop. Now relaunch Disk Utility and see if the problem continues. If not, then use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions, and then you can Trash the file on your Desktop.
You should also use your OS X install disc to boot the system and use Disk Utility to Repair Disk, to see if there are any problems. If it reports any errors that it can fix, keep running it until no more are reported.
If there's an error that it cannot fix, stop using your system immediately and make a backup of everything; then get a disk utility such as DiskWarrior to see if it can fix your drive. If your drive cannot be repaired, you will need to replace the internal drive and restore from your backup (if you have one).
    Hope this helps,
    Mulder

  • With the upgrade to 10.5 I cannot see the option to share apps under preferences sharing. Am I doing anything wrong?

I upgraded to itunes 10.5 on my Windows Vista Desktop and my wife's Windows 7 laptop as well.
On my desktop I use my login/account information.
On my wife's laptop used her login/account information.
Enabled home sharing on both the computers and authorized both the computers.
On my desktop when I open itunes and go to preferences screen and in there under sharing I don't see Apps listed anymore.
So I cannot share the apps I bought using my account/desktop with my wife's account/laptop.
By the way I am able to see music and movies across both the computers and can even share it. Just not the apps since the options is now not available under preferences >> sharing tos hare apps.
I am using iphone 4S and my wife uses iphone 4.

  • Codec Overrun And Invalid Checksum

Over the past 2 months, I have been having issues downloading the iPhone SDK. I started attempting to download the dmg from the iPhone Dev Center from 2.2 and since the day Apple releases 3.0. I have downloaded over 30 times and every single time, I tried to mount the DMG, it is either Invalid Checksum or Codec Overrun. I tried downloading other DMGs and what strikes me was that any DMG below 1GB, seems to mount successfully. Those that are above (like the iPhone SDK), are giving errors. Even if I skip the validation part, which forces the DMG to mount successfully, I would end up failing in installation.
There are countless written cases around this when googled, and I've tried every one of them, short of a complete re-installation of Leopard. And even that, I am not sure it will work as some have written to say that they have tried but unsuccessful. From changing the router, to stopping internet sharing to disabling all firewall and security and even repairing all disk permission and clearing all cache! Majority of people have this codec overrun issue, none has actually posted a resolution. What bugs me was that even RAR files that I download gets CRC failures and I am not sure if this is related to the DMG problems.
If there are anyone out there who has this resolved, please share... you will save a lot of people with tremendous amount of hassle. If any Apple Technician is reading this, please acknowledge and rectify... this is the single most frustrating problem with Leopard. Do a google on 'Codec Overrun' and you will hit countless users expressing their frustration over this issue. I had zero problems with downloads on Tiger, but ever since Leopard, this is showing up so often and I am surprise it only exist on the Macs. I am not sure who's fault lies with such download problem, the ISP, any hardware, the software or the OS... but I am certain that this has every bit to do with the Mac OS. It doesn't explain why Tiger is perfectly ok with downloads and eversince Leopard, it's not.

Strongly suggest posting to the appropriate forum under OS X Technologies where the Unix and developers hang out.

  • Problem with DMGs and error: "No Mountable File Systems"

Problem with DMGs and error: "No Mountable File Systems"
The files are not corrupt. The problem is occurring with all DMGs that are apparently formatted in MS-DOS FAT16. No the file will not mount with Disk utility or any other disk mounter programs I have found.
This is now the second time this occurred and now effects my MBP and my iMac. First time i spent days with Apple support and the only solution was ultimately back up the data, reformat the HD, start over from scratch and reload everything. That lasted about a month before the problem resurfaced and is now an issue on both iMac and MBP.
I tried to identify all the programs I installed immediately before the error, as I am convinced it is the result of a software conflict.
    Recent programs includes:
    1) upgrading from Parallels 5.5 to 6.0 on both machines.
    2) using an HP secure II usb drive and setting up a secure disk.
    3) installing new itunes 10
    4) new update to Flip For Mac.
The files affected are downloaded dmgs, including personal brain and google earth, both which are formatted in FAT16.
Any help or thoughts? Apple has now spent hours trying and they say i now have to reformat and wipe and start over. That is unacceptable and based on pasted experience the problem is likely to repeat itself. having to wipe and rebuild a HD ever month is not an solution. i need to fid the root problem.
In the meantime, anyone got a real solution on how to extract the data for a DMG using a different method?

  • Unable to create "filename.dmg" (error -60008) {Disk Utility Problem}

    Hi:
I’ve used Disk Utilities awesome capabilities many times, but am now running into my first real problem.
I am trying to create a 100 GB new blank disk image, using the “Mac OS Extended (Journaled) option for format, 256-bit AES encryption, a single partition-Apple Partition Map, and Image Format as read/write disk image.
When I implement this, it asks for the AES password then repeatedly crashes, albeit in slightly different ways each time. The most informative was a Unable to create “filename.dmg” (error -60008) message. I can’t find anything explanatory about this in Google
I’m wondering if this has something to do with my upgrade to Lion (OS 10.7.4) yesterday from Snow Leopard.
This error occurs on both my home and work iMacs. It seems to reliably occur about 1/2 way through typing in my password. The error occurs whether I use 128 or 256 AES encryption.
There is more than adequate space on the hard drive I am attempting to place this image on. Disk Utility is version 12.1.1 (353) and all is running on a 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5 iMac.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you
PS: This is a duplicate post from the OS Lion forums ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/18410534#18410534 ), but since a) it occurs on both my Intel iMacs, b) I totally rely on Disk Utility's capabilities, so this loss with the Lion upgrade really hurts, and c) we've had no luck in the Lion forums, we're hoping someone here has seen this issue and can help. Much appreciated.

Hello, I believe that's an authentication error, thinks your not an admin account. Might try this...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, move this folder to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost /
    reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
