.dmg sidebar

I have a .dmg file that I am unable to show the sidebar in. When I go to the view > show sidebar in the finder menu, the "Show Sidebar" is grayed out. Any suggestions?
Thanks

You are welcome.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

• Can't mount dmg files, Applications button in sidebar automatically closes Finder, and Flash won't work in browsers

Although these problems don't seem to be related, they all started occurring at the exact same time. To reiterate
1) Any time I try to mount a .dmg file, the setup window automatically closes
2) Any time I go into Finder and click on "Applications" button in the sidebar, the Finder window automatically closes
3) Flash player does not work in any browser
I have tried repairing permissions and this doesn't work.
Can anyone help?

Have you repaired the Disk. You must boot into the Recovery HD to repair the disk. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782

• External Hard Drive won't mount - tried Disk Warrior, am backing up as a .dmg...will this work?

Hi Guys,
Hopefully someone can help! Fairly desperate situation here...
I backed up around 700GB of data to an Iomega external hard drive (supplied by the client), using my Macbook Pro...all was fine when I unmounted the drive at the end of the backup.
The client took the drive away and called me to say he mounted the drive in Windows (on a PC), and he was able to work with the files for a time, but now the drive won't mount...
I collected the drive, hooked it up to my Mac Pro, but OSX tells me it can't mount the drive. It shows up in Disk Utility in the sidebar, but not on the desktop...
I tried repairing the disk using Disk Utility and with Disk Warrior, both tell me the disk cannot be repaired...
I am currently making a backup of the drive as a .dmg file, using a program called Disk Drill...it's slow as I expected, but I'm still not sure the .dmg will mount...because surely it's just making a copy of the data exactly, of which some part is not mounting (a mount directory or something???)
Is there any way you guys can think of me somehow taking the data and backing it up onto another disk?
Specialist recovery services seem to think there shouldn't be any problem recovering the data, and of couse, as a costly last resort, that's what I'll have to do, but does anyone know how they may go about doing it? It is something vastly complicated such as a command line thing?
Sorry about the length of this question...just hope someone can help!
Thanks in advance...

You didn't say what format (filesystem type) the disk was.
However, I'd say your analysis is probably correct. Something has corrupted the disk. You can make a disk image copy to the .dmg which will preserve the data, such as it is, but I doubt extremely if it will fix any file system corruption.
Furthermore, if both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior have said the disk is unreadable I'm dubious that anything else will magically repair it and that recovery probably consists of snuffling through the disk block by block.
However if the filesystem is FAT (Windows) there may be other (Windows) utilities that can fix it.
You said you 'backed up the data'. Does that mean you still have the original data on your MBP? Are you trying to recover the client's changes?

• Bug or Feature? Eject selected dmg closes Finder window

In Leopard (on my machine at least), if you
1. mount a dmg,
2. select this dmg in the sidebar of a previously opened Finder window (not the new one that pops up with the mount), and then
3. click the eject icon,
the host Finder window will close as the dmg unmounts. Is this a bug, or a feature?
In Tiger, if you do this the window remains open, and your mounted devices will be shown in the second column. While this could be mildly confusing (the devices show up twice in the left-right hierarchy), at least you are left with a Finder window and a chance for further navigation.
If this is a feature in Leopard, I think it's a questionable call: there you are with a single Finder window open, then poof, you've got nothing and it looks like the window's been lost due to a crash. Perhaps you could argue that since you selected the dmg, ejecting it could only mean you want to close the host window, since your selection will be gone and what the window should show is undefined. Actually, nah, this doesn't make sense to me for an advanced interface.
Of course, maybe this is just something afflicting me...

Don't know whether to classify it as a bug or a feature. The old behavior was sorta illogical, the new behavior is logical, but silly. Anyway, if the thing being ejected (dmg or drive or whatever) is selected so that the Finder window is displaying its contents, and you eject it then window closes. If something else is selected and you eject whatever by clicking just the eject button next to it (but don't select it), the window doesn't close because the object ejected wasn't the window being displayed. Logical. New. Annoying.

• .dmg file crashes Finder

I have a .dmg file that crashes Finder after mounting. The mounted image icon appears on the desktop, but not in the Finder window sidebar. When I try and open Finder crashes and starts up again.
I have tried verifying and repairing the file in Disk Utility and everything checks out fine.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Just to add a bit to Niel's coolest solution for this problem I have seen yet:
1. You will want to relaunch Finder to create a new Desktop folder: just hold down the option key and click on the Finder icon in the Dock and select relaunch
2. You can then move any good files you had out of the OldDesktop folder back into the newly created Desktop folder
3. You can then toss the OldDesktop folder with the offending files into the trash
And Niel: bravo! Finally a decent solution the Finder-Desktop problem! This is GREAT!

• Missing sidebar/sidebar will not open, finder issues

Hi, i no longer have sidebars on my finder windows, and clicking the button in upper right corner just toggles the toolbar, does not bring up sidebar. I trashed the Finder and sidebar .plists for this user, repaired permissions... no change. Very occasionally the sidebar appears out of nowhere on one window, then won't open on the next. I am noticing other Finder strangeness, such as the battery indicator always says "calculating", and i'm having trouble opening any .dmgs (Stuffit also hangs when it tries to open anything), and response is very sluggish. This doesn't seem to be occurring in the other user on the iBook. Given that i've already trashed the Finder and Sidebar prefs for this user, twice, with no result, what can i try now?

Yes, thanks, i just discovered i can drag it back out from the separator dimple. But i hadn't reduced it, and new windows are still sometimes randomly showing up without one, without me doing anything.
Now the Finder suddenly hung completely and i had to command-key restart. Seems to be working fine in the other user account. Unfortunately the user account in which i have the problem is the one i use all day!
These issues seemed to start when newly-installed Stuffit 11 hung and had to be force-quit while expanding something (yeah, i tried trashing its prefs too).

• Genius sidebar gone with update 10.0.1

Does anyone know how to enable the genius sidebar, as it has completely disappeared after the update and replaced by the Ping sidebar, which I don't find any use for?

Just copy a version of iTunes 10.0 back into your application folder and drag it onto your Dock.
(Get the copy from a backup, make a copy of iTunes before updating, or download it directly from Apple:

• Start application from .dmg

Hello
I'm wondering what happens if you start up an application from a .dmg file. Will it also place preference files and the like on your Mac or will it just start without putting a single file on your Mac?
And what kind of .dmg file should it be (read/write or dvd/cd master)?
Thanks!

Every user has a folder whose icon is represented by a House image on the sidebar when they are logged in as that user. Those folders for all users are under:
Macintosh HD -> Users
The Desktop folder, the one that has your wallpaper and hard drive is under the home folder of the logged in user.
So if your user is Guest,
Macintosh HD -> Users -> Guest -> Desktop folder is the path to the wallpaper folder.
In the Unix system, Macintosh HD, and any mounted disk, flash drive, or media is actually in
/Volumes/Macintosh HD/
So /Volumes/Macintosh HD/ is the actual path in Unix to your hard drive.
and /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users/Guest is the actual path to the guest folder.
The Shared folder in the Users folder is one shared by all users on the hard drive.

• Dmg's problem remains after 10.5.1 (and Help problems)

I did a download-and-install of the 10.5.1 update. Immediately after, loaded up some dmg's, and found that the problem with unmounting was not fixed in this round. Every few attempts, clcking on the eject icon in the Finder sidebar causes the window to vanish, and the dmg is not unmounted.
And, trying to use Finder Help, it was unresponsive.
I had Console open during all this, looking at the windowserver log; the dmg problem showed up as:
Nov 15 17:57:23 [99] kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGXGetWindowWorkspace: invalid window id: 5a
Help's ailments shows up as:
Nov 15 18:06:53 [99] kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGXSetWindowListTags: Operation on a window 0x6 not owned by caller Help Viewer
Nov 15 18:09:55 [99] kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGXSetTrackingAreaOption : Invalid tracking area
Maybe after 10.5.2 this will go away??

Sorry to hear that. There seem to be several others with the same problems who have posted to this forum.
As for the window closing while trying to unmount, activate something other than the disk you want to unmount (say your internal hard drive), then click the eject button for the drive you want to unmount, this will at least keep the window open.
For unmounting, try the command line unmount solutions at
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5808848&#5808848
Perhaps the next update will fix it, so until then, leaving them mounted till the shutdown seems to be the solution (hopefully the command line fixes it for you).

Recurring "connection failed" when selecting TimeCapsule in the sidebar (internet connection works fine). Clicking "Connect As" starts the cyle over again but ends in "There was a problem connection to the server" message. Only fix is resetting TC.
The TC is the wifi base station, also have AirportExpress on the network, both of which work fine. The TC has an external disc connected as well, which is also visible in the sidebar but also cannot be connected to. Several MB computers use the network, all of which either can or cannot connect to the TC disc depending on when it is acting up.
Any ideas other than clicking "connect as" or powering down the network every time?

Read up how to install 5.6 utility into ML.. it is pretty easy.
I downloaded 5.6
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Download unpkg
http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Open the dmg to get the pkg.. drag it onto unpkg.. and it will create a directory under desktop with all the files.. drag the application to the utility directory.. or just run it direct.
Google if you want more explicit instructions.
Much easier with a real tool instead of a toy.
Hold the option key when you select firmware update.. all the old ones will appear.
But this will not work on newer Gen4.. only on every other model and early Gen4. .I do not know when they turned the corner and started this only 7.6 nonsense.

• Can't seem to delete MPlayerX.dmg from my MacBook

Hello!
Recently I was directed to a streaming website that automatically downloaded a file called MPlayerX.dmg, which seems to be some sort of adware judging by other peoples' experiences with it. I did not actually install the file, but when I went to delete it from my Downloads folder, I found myself unable to empty the trash. Instead, this message pops up:
I don't really understand how it's in use if I never installed it, and it's definitely not in my Applications folder. Any help would be much appreciated! It doesn't seem to be doing anything to my Mac but it is rather annoying just sitting there. I'm using a 2011 MacBook Pro, running Mavericks.

The disk image contains malware, so it's a good thing you didn't install it. Locate it in the sidebar of a Finder window under DEVICES and click the eject button. You should then be able to delete the file. Never follow a prompt on any website to install or update software.

• .dmg on desktop

When I download things like Sibelius Scorch, I find an icon on my desktop that looks like the hard drive. It will be labeled as InstallScorch.dmg, or whatever I have downloaded.dmg. This is true with many of the things I download. My desktop is becoming quite covered with these .dmg icons. Are these something that I need, or after installing the folders etc. can they be deleted? If I need to keep them, is there somewhere else I could put them on the computer so I don't have my desktop cluttered with them?
Thanks for any help

Hello Kaye.
When an application is provided/distributed as a
bundle which is downloaded as a .dmg file which is
short for disk image, double-clicking on the
downloaded .dmg file mounts the disk image on the
Desktop with an icon that looks like a hard drive. To
actually install the bundled application on your hard
drive requires dragging the application from the
mounted disk image to your Applications folder which
copies the application from the mounted disk image to
your hard drive.
When finished, drag the mounted disk image to the
Trash can in the Dock to unmount the disk image or
with the mounted disk image selected, at the Finder
menu bar go to File and select "unmount" and the name
of the mounted disk image. You can also unmount a
mounted disk image via the Finder Sidebar.
You can then delete the downloaded .dmg file.
Thank you Allan. This helped me solve an identical issue!

• Installation problem on new macbook pro i7 How do I get a DMG or firefox icon on desktop?

I can't see anything but the name label on the DMG file. The blue dialogue box only has the applications folder in it. I tried installing both 3.6 and 4 beta versions with the same result.

Make sure that Firefox gets installed properly.
Open the DMG file and drag to Firefox program to the application folder on your hard drive.
You shouldn't double-click the Firefox application to run it from the disk image, but drag it out of the DMG folder instead.
• Copy file from mounted DMG to the Applications folder?

I'm wanting to copy file (application) from a mounted DMG to the Applications folder. Something like:
tell application "Finder"
try
copy "Volumes:Dropbox Installer:Dropbox.app" to folder "Volumes:Macintosh HD:Applications"
end try
end tell
(But that doesn't work).
Preferably overwriting the existing application in that folder. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

tell application "Finder"
duplicate file "Volumes:S001TEST:S001-S001c-TEST.zip" to folder "Volumes:Macintosh HD:Applications" with replacing
end tell
I tried this principle in Applescript (Mavericks) and received error...
Finder got an error: Can’t set folder "Volumes:Macintosh HD:Applications" to file "Volumes:S001TEST:S001-S001c-TEST.zip".
"001TEST" is a disk image with filename of "S001TEST.dmg"
Any ideas why this won't work?

• Is there any way of dragging and dropping an iCal event showing in week view across to a date in the left sidebar monthly calendar?

Hi, Im not a frequent forum poster, as most of my questions can be found already answered on them!
This is a question Ive had for a long time and it amazes me that no-one else seems to ask it. I check at each OS upgrade but its never there...
Is there any way of dragging and dropping an iCal event showing in week view across to a date in the left sidebar monthly calendar?
I was able to do this years ago in MS Outlook, and utilized it all the time when I needed to push things back, now I have to open the event and select an new date in the drop-down calendar for each & every event I want to move to a new month at the end of the month.
If its definitely not possible, how to you ask apple to consider including it - it doesnt seem like a particularly difficult task.
Thankyou
Andrew.

Andrew,
Is there any way of dragging and dropping an iCal event showing in week view across to a date in the left sidebar monthly calendar?
No, but you can use cut/paste. Cut (⌘X) the event, then click on the week where you want to move the event, and Paste (⌘V).
If you have a suggestion for Apple to change that method use: Apple - Mac OS X - Feedback.
