Which DNS numbers should i be using, 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2 or 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220

The first pair of servers you list belong to Verizon's DNS; the latter two are OpenDNS. Your question is not black and white; usually, you'll use your ISP's DNS, but you may get more reliable/faster results with other values. I use OpenDNS at several of my clients and have had good results with it.

Is there a Terminal command that will pick up the DNS numbers utilized by a router?
The router options don't show any, though the router is set to use PPPoA to pick them up.

What do you mean by "pick up"?
I mean to show what the DNS numbers are that the router is using.
They are not entered in the DNS server field in Networks, TCP/IP tab.
If you mean refresh the client settings, the DNS settings are obtained as part of the DHCP lease (or PPP connection in the case of PPP).
The user/ OP is actually using PPPoA, when i googled PPPoA.. seems he is using Cisco perhaps.

Essentially the original poster removed the OpenDNS #s from his DNS server field in the TCP/IP tab (b/c they seem to make Adobe.com inaccessible to him)
removing them & allowing his router to "pick them up from the ISP" seems to solved his problem.
However he can not, find what the numbers are that are being utilized,
b/c they are not entered as usual in the Network, & part of the DHCP lease,
or in Airport admin Utility.
I/ we wondered, if there was a Terminal command that will show what the
numbers are that are being used .
Does that help clarify what I mean? Sorry to be so long winded.

Deleted my DNS numbers.. How do I restore?

While attempting to add Open DNS numbers, which I must have done wrong, my original DNS numbers disappeared. Can't get online at all. How do restore?

In *Network Preferences* you can have several locations. I have one I labeled *Open DNS* and one I labeled Verizon and several for Earthlink.

Unwanted DNS numbers listed - is my computer infected?

Hi,
Since yesterday my internet browser is redirecting me to some websites I don't want to go to. I did some research on my computer and is listing 2 DNS numbers that are different to the one I used to have, and if I renew my DHCP lease sometimes it changes those number for my normal one, but after saving the new settings and going back the two 'illegal' number are there. And because they are un-selectable, I cannot remove them. Is this mean that my computer is infected? How can I fix this and remove the files were installed on my computer that give these numbers?
I checked this issue and for PC appear to be as a hijack or infection issue. Will this be the same case for Mac?

I have found some archieved discussions about this, but none that went into detail about how to fix problem using proxies - I don't really understand what they are/ do.
I went into the Proxies screen, Only one box was checked, "Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV)" I unchecked it, and made no difference. There was also some stuff written in the "Bypass proxy settings for these hosts and domains" I deleated that and nothing different happened. Have also tried some other DNS numbers, nothing worked yet.
Any suggestions?

I still have no idea what was wrong with Safari last week, but I opened it today, and its all working! Hurrah!

Open DNS Numbers Question

I have a 2Wire Router/Modem from AT&T do i have to add the numbers to this or can i just add them to my computer via System Preferences?

The number is greyed out, because it is the one supplied by your router since your using DHCP. That's all fine. And you're right. Simply delete the OpenDNS numbers to return to the previous state. Some ISPs have slow DNS, so using OpenDNS is usually a good idea, but not absolutely neccessary.

Where Do I Enter DNS Numbers?

I have an imac and Macbook Pro that both connect wirelessly through a snow base-station connected by ethernet cable to a dsl modem. This set up normally works perfectly but occasionally I will experience some slow connection issues which I believe are usually related to the isp's network. So sometimes just to experiment I will try to manually enter dns server numbers into my settings. The base station is configured by dhcp to distribute ip and share single ip address using dhcp and Nat. Normally I leave those dns fields in the airport admin. utility blank and I suppose those are provided by the modem/isp.
I've been told to try manually entering dns server numbers if I'm having connection issues-but where do I put those in? Do I use the fields on the base station utility or do I use the network setting in system preferences on the macs themselves? I never have been clear on where exactly to enter those.

Either place. If you put enter them into AirPort Admin Utility they will be pushed out to all clients of the base station. If you put them into System Preferences, they will only affect that one Mac.

Open DNS follow-up report

Interestingly, after a very positive experience by adding the open DNS numbers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220, I found today that every time I tried to open Safari it knocked me offline. So I've now resorted back to the number originally assigned to me.
What's going on with Safari?

Check with Verizon and find out what the max download / upload speeds should be.

To realize faster download and uploads speeds you would need to upgrade your service.
This is more then just a DNS issue.

Open DNS

My very much up-to-date Safari has been exceptionally neurotic. The day begins at lightning speed, then slows down, then, from time to time, Safari simply knocks out my internet connection.
I've seen others here suggesting one could add 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 in their DNS menu. I haven't done it yet, simply when I click "+" to do so, my current numbers disappear. I was hoping the two series of numbers above could be added rather than substituted, so that if there was a problem with the two suggested numbers, I could revert back to the old ones, provided by, I assume, my internet provider Verizon.
Any thoughts on the above?

Problems setting up open DNS

I have been trying for several days to get open dns set up on my home network and imac and am running into a wall. I have installed the correct numbers on my router and even added them to my modem. I checked on my imac ethernet network settings and the dns numbers are displayed there correctly. I have been in contact with Open DNS through a service ticket and been on their forum and tried multiple solutions. I appear to be using the open dns connections but even after multiple attempts to adjust my settings, I cant get it to filter Adult sites (I did set up an account as directed). Im about ready to give up on the service but thought I would try hear to see if this might be a common issue and if anyone has recommendations??

if you are using their service you should see in your browser.
If you are able to access a pron site that you accessed prior to turning on filtering then this problem may be due to the browsers caching the information.
I would suggest you clear your browsers caches.
also clear the dns cache on your mac use the following command in your terminal
dscacheutil -flushcache
also use the following command to list what dns servers your mac is using and post the results so I can check them.
/usr/sbin/scutil --dns | grep nameserver

Airport Extreme with ATT Router for Open DNS use

I'd like my whole home network to have a filter on it so all computers and hand devices are protected. I get my internet with an ATT router which I can not change the DNS servers. ATT says they can not be changed. But I have an airport extreme directly connected to the ATT router. The extreme supplies wi-fi to the house. I can not change the DNS settings in the extreme. They are grayed out. I'm assuming it has something to do with the connection to the ATT router. Does anyone know how I can put a DNS address in the extreme?
Some of the settings on the extreme are:
Internet Tab: connect using DHCP, DNS Servers "grayed out", Domain Name "grayed out"
Network Tab: Router Mode (off (bridge mode))

Not sure what you mean that you cannot enter the DNS numbers on your AirPort Extreme configuration page.
Open up AirPort Utility and select the Internet tab
Look at the first DNS entry there. There should be a cursor at the beginning of the DNS Server Box. If not, click to set the insertion point at the beginning of the box.
Simply start typing in the DNS server number that you want to use.....208.67.222.222...... and it will overwrite the grayed out values there.
Do the same for the second DNS box....208.67.220.220.
Click Update at the lower right and you are all set.

A Concern About Open DNS

It is bad for download performance not to use your ISPs local DNS servers.
When you use foreign DNS servers, many websites will mis-identify your location, and send you to farther away places to download the website, rather than the local, faster location.
For example, your Software Updates from Apple, which go through Akamai, who will send you to a slower, more distant server for the download.
In addition, as the switch to IPv6 begins, sites such as Google/YouTube will not enable you for IPv6 because you aren't using your ISPs DNS server, which they use to decide whether to give you an IPv6 website address, or just the IPv4 address.

Adding DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:

Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:

Restart Safari, and repair permissions.

Cisco Linksys E3000 - Open DNS Error

I just purchased a Cisco Linksys E3000 and got it set up pretty much the way I want it. My only remaining problem is I wish to used Open DNS as my DNS server. On Line chat support says,"Please access router set up. Under the set up tab you will see the option for DNS1 and DNS2 please change it to 208.87.222 & 208.67.220 and save settings". I replied"I am on the basic set up page and currently I see Static DNS 1 thru 3 which are currently all zeros is that where you want me to put the new DNS numbers?"
I made the changes as directed, saved and also flushed the DNS cache in Windows and in Firefox, rebooted and everything worked great.
The problem is if the computer goes to sleep or is shut down when it restarts it cannot find the DNS server! What am I missing?

Thanks for your help. This one really has me baffled
As you can see below the static DNS is set to 3 adddresses for Open DNS and everthing works fine.untill either the computer goes to sllep or is shut down. Then the router can no longer locate a DNS server. The only way I can find to get everything working again is to zero out the address for Open DNS and reboot the router which somehow reestablises the DNS servers as:

You can also this below and I hope you have some idea of what is happening. I never had this problem before with any other routers on this system.

Open DNS better than Comcast xfinity DNS?

Is OpenDNS better than using Comcast/xfinity's DNS? If yes, how do I switch over?
I go to into Airport Utility and enter in the 2 openDNS numbers, something like 222 and 220, but at the bottom of the page right now (because I am using Comcast's DNS) there's a web address something.comcast.net Do I need to change that info too? If so, what do I put in that field?
