DNS Server problems with ASA 5505

Hi guys,
we setup a new ASA 5505 which is mainly used as our VPN gateway. The ASA is configured and controlled by our ISP (and this is where the problem starts )) and they somehow cannot manage to get the VPN settings really working.
So, here is our problem.
our machines(Windows 7) are configured to get the network settings through DHCP (Windows 2012 Server).
Before I connect with AnyConnect to our VPN gateway, the DNS Server setting in the network settings for the adapters(IPv4) are set to 'dynamic'
When I now connect, this setting is changes to a statc entry (which is our DNS server).
When disconnecting, it is not reverted back, which means I have to do this always manually.
What I do not understand is the fact, that the DNS server is set for all the adapters, shouldtn't it be only set to the anyconnect adapter?.
The interesting thing is, that when I connect to a different ASA, this does not happen. The ISP is now saying, that the machines are configured exactly the same and that they cannot reproduce, but I can't believe this.
This issue shows up at every machine which connects to our vpn, so it is not only a single machine which might be misconfigured.
Do you have any idea what might cause this issue?
btw, the second ASA (which works) is from our partner company, so we cannot simply copy the config
THanks in advance
Patrick

Nice to see someone from BT has addressed your issue
I have this exact same problem, seems completely bizarre, I'm pretty sure I had the same problem with the original home hub (i have the latest one now). Can you confirm whether the problem does affect anyone with a bt home hub and not just the one that the dyndns is pointing at? I'll try and confirm by hitting your domain from my home connection.

  • Problem with ASA 5505 VPN config

    Hi to all,
I have a problem with ASA 5505 remote access vpn. I have site-to-site VPN and I need that my VPN clients can access IP subnets that I have behind site-to-site VPN. All that I have tried I get and error to my log “Flow is a loopback”.
So what I need : for example I need that vpn client with ip 10.0.0.1 can go to 192.168.1.2
    My config:
    access-list Test_splitTunnelAcl standard permit host 10.0.2.3
    access-list Test_splitTunnelAcl standard permit host 10.0.2.4
    access-list Test_splitTunnelAcl standard permit 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
    access-list nonat_outside extended permit ip 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
    ip local pool VPN_Client_Pool2 10.0.0.1-10.0.0.200 mask 255.255.255.0
    nat (outside) 0 access-list nonat_outside
    nat (outside) 1 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0

    split-tunnel-network-list value Test_splitTunnelAcl
    Site-to-Site:

    access-list outside_3_cryptomap extended permit ip object-group DM_INLINE_NETWORK_2 object-group DM_INLINE_NETWORK_4

    network-object 10.0.2.0 255.255.255.0
    network-object 10.0.3.0 255.255.255.0
    object-group network DM_INLINE_NETWORK_4

    network-object host 192.168.3.55
    network-object 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
I hope that someone can post an answer and solve my problem

    A few things are required:
    1) You don't need the following 2 lines, so it can be removed:
    nat (outside) 0 access-list nonat_outside
    nat (outside) 1 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0
    2) On the ASA, you need to configure:
    same-security-traffic permit intra-interface
    3) Object group: DM_INLINE_NETWORK_2 needs to include 10.0.0.0/24
    4) On the remote lan-to-lan end, the crypto ACL also needs to include 10.0.0.0/24 as the destination subnet.
    5) The NAT exemption (NONAT) on the remote lan-to-lan end also needs to include 10.0.0.0/24 as the destination subnet.
Hope that will resolve your problem.

  • DNS Server problem with AX

my network only consists of the AX, my macbook, and my PC (which is rarely used anymore). At least once a week, sometimes more often, my AX reports a DNS server problem. I've plugged it in to the ethernet and the settings are they same and there is no other router involved. The AX is connected directly from the cable modem. I confirmed with my ISP that the DNS server numbers are correct and they show up in the proper fields as well. What may cause this and how can I fix it?

    Welcome to the discussion area!
Since the Express can only use the information that it receives from the ISP,
you might want to try the Open DNS settings to see if that will help. Just be sure to make note of your current settings in case you need to revert to them.

  • Problem with ASA 5505

    Good morning,
I'm having the following problem. I configured a ASA 5505 with VPN and a VPN Remote Access Site-to-site. Everything is working, but when I reload the ASA does not work anymore VPNs, Remote Access error 412 and the Site-to-site does not connect more to solve, I have to reset and reconfigure the ASA. This is happening dopo updating the ASA, I have version 842-k8 and asdm645-106.
Does anyone have any idea what can be?
    Thank you.

    David,
In order to understand why LDAP is not working run a "debug ldap 255" and then try to login or run a AAA test.
Attach the output to find out the issue.

  • Remote Access VPN Problem with ASA 5505

After about ~1 year of having the Cisco VPN Client connecting to a ASA 5505 without any problems, suddenly one day it stops working. The client is able to get a connection to the ASA and browse the local network for only about 30 seconds after connection. After that, no access is available to the network behind the ASA. I tried everything that I can think of to try and troubleshoot the problem, but at this point I am just banging my head against a wall. Does anyone know what could cause this?
Here is the running cfg of the ASA

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I made the change that you requested by moving the VPN pool to the 192.168.3.0 network. Unfortunately, now traffic isn't flowing to the inside network at all. I was going to make a specific route as you suggested, but as far as I can see the routes are already being created correctly on the VPN client's end.
Here is the route print off of the computer behind the (test) client:

  • DHCP Problem with ASA 5505

Hi. I have an ASA 5505 configured for Transparent Mode. The Outside interface connects to a router (RV042). The router manages DHCP. With the 5505 in the system, all computers can connect to the internet and to each other, except for a few. The problem computers can be made to work if they are set to a specific address, rather than automatically assigned by the router. Some of the iPads work correctly, some do not. At least one Apple Notebook cannot connect even if I enter a static address.
Consulting the documentation, I found that DHCP traffic (UPD Port 67 and 68) needed to be enabled via rules for the Inside and Outside interfaces. I did that in ASDM but now nothing works.
I have pulled the 5505 out of the system and restored it to the configuration that worked for most of the computers.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can pull a "show" run from CLI if it is useful.
    Thanks...

Understood. I tried adding the "inside_out extended permit ip any any" command, but it made no difference. Because the implicit rule (permit ip traffic to any less secure interface) is still in the access list table, it would seem the additional extended rule is not needed.
When I first received the 5505, it had an older version of firmware. At the time, when I entered any rule in ASDM it deleted the "less secure" implicit rule, which then broke the system since there was no path for internet traffic from inside to outside, as you have stated. With the newest firmware release, however, when I enter a rule, the "less secure" implicit rule does not go away.
So, with help from the folks here I have made progress. Right now the issue is that when the 5505 in Transparent Mode is between the router and user computers, the computers cannot reliably get addresses that are auto-assigned by the router.
Looking through the logs displayed on ASDM, I noticed the following curious statement:
"6 Mar 31 2014 07:16:42  fe80::1131:41c2:3627:8339 63575 ff02::1:3 5355 No management IP address configured for transparent firewall. Dropping protocol UDP packet from outside:fe80::1131:41c2:3627:8339/63575 to inside:ff02::1:3/5355"
However, I have configured a management IP address, and it is listed in the "show" document that I posted yesterday:
    interface BVI1
     ip address 192.168.1.10 255.255.255.0
    So, I am confused.
I appreciate the help. I am new to the 5505, although I participated as a "friendly" in the ASA program some years ago. I recall a similar problem with that setup. Regrettably, I can't remember how we fixed it...
    Regards...

  • Problem with ASA 5505 SSL login

I have an ASA 5505 that is hosting a SSL VPN. The user can not login. They receive login error. To the best of their knowledge, this problem started after the office Domain Controller was rebuilt. I have looked on ASA and in AD and cannot seem to trace the issue. Any ideas?

    David,
In order to understand why LDAP is not working run a "debug ldap 255" and then try to login or run a AAA test.
Attach the output to find out the issue.
Please check this out as well, to make sure that you have the correct settings:

  • VPN PROBLEM CISCO ASA 5505

Hello,  I have been trying to configure a VPN with Cisco Asa 5505 and Cisco VPN client 5.X for 3 weeks and I am not being able to accomplish it, so I decided to reset to factory defaults and start over again.
I used ASDM 6.4 VPN wizard to configure it (I selected exempt local network from NAT and enabled split tunneling, but I have tried other combinations as well).
Tunnel seems to be established properly since I do see an endpoint while using 'sh crypto isakmp sa' but 'sh crypto ipsec sa' shows no packets encrypted or decrypted, so VPN is not working as expected. I can't ping or rdp to internal LAN:

          #pkts decaps: 0, #pkts decrypt: 0, #pkts verify: 0

Thank you very much for your help

Yes, it was a VPN client problem. I was doing test with a WWAN card and it seems it is not compatible with windows 7.
    • The VPN Client on Windows 7 does not support WWAN devices (also called wireless data cards).
I should have read Release Notes before. Thank you very much for your help and effort.

  • Problems upgrading ASA 5505 memory

I am trying to get experience with 8.4 code on my 5505.  I purchased a Cisco 512MB memory upgrade and installed it.  It booted up once and I thought I was ok.  I then looked down and noticed that all lights were blinking on the front panel and I had no console access.
Since I dont have smartnet on my personal 5505, calling TAC for help isnt an option.  That is why I spent extra money on Cisco memory but it looks that didnt help.  I am assuming all blinking lights isnt a good thing but I havent been able find an explanation.
I will try reseating the memory to see if that is the problem.  I put the ASA on an anti-static mat and had it and myself properly grounded.
If this doesnt fix it, I will return the Cisco memory to the vendor and go back to the original installed memory.  The ASA 5505 worked fine on 8.2.5.
    Would appreciate any suggestions,
    Ron

    Ronald and James,
It has been over a month since you posted, so perhaps your issue was resolved.  I actually experienced the exact same issue with my personal ASA 5505 today following an upgrade to 512MB.  What really surprised me was James' comment that his worked for about 12 hours and stopped.  That's exactly what happened to me today.  It might have been 13 hours, but it was definitely in the ballpark.
The first thing I did was just disconnect power and re-connect the power to see if it magically went away.  (I've never had to cycle the power on my ASA before, so I was not hopeful this would work.  In fact, I was glad it did not work, as that would concern me even more.)
The next thing I did was disconnect everything, open the case, remove the RAM, blow out all of the dust using compressed air, and then re-install the RAM.  So far, so good, but it has only  been 15 minutes.
I'll keep an eye on this, obviously, but I am nonetheless curious to hear more about your situations.  Were you able to resolve the problem permanently or were you unable to make the upgrade to 512MB?
UPDATE - My ASA continued to have issues with the new RAM module.  It turned out to be a defective SIMM.  I contacted the seller and returned the defective SIMM.  They sent a new one and it works just fine.

  • Hello I'm having a no dns server problem on my time capsule

Hello I'm having this same problem:
    Sammy Stefanki
    Apr 11, 2012 2:20 PM
    Hi everyone,
I just bought a new AirPort Express and Comcast is my ISP. I ditched my old Belkin wireless router, connected the Comcast modem directly to my AirPort Express, and it appears to be working great. I can access the internet wirelessly and also play music using AirPlay through my stereo speakers.
However, when I open the AirPort Utility, the utility tells me that I have two problems with my AirPort Express:
Apparently I have no internet connection (the utility tells me that "Your AirPort base station does not have a valid IP address."), even though I can access the internet just fine.
I don't appear to have any DNS server addresses (the utility tells me that "This AirPort base station doesn't have any DNS server addresses and might have trouble connecting to the internet.")
Does anyone know if these are serious problems that I need to address, or can they be ignored? I don't want to start tinkering with the AirPort Express's settings until I am better informed, because right now everything is working as far as my access to the internet is concerned.

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.
BUT NOTHING IT STILL SHOWS NO INTERNET CONNECTON  on my capsule and NO DNS SERVER ...
I have tried to HARD RESET it resets ( with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN) and it connects to internet, it also says setuo complete in airport utility but once I go back into Airport utily cause Time capsule is still flashing amber it says NO INTERNET CONNECTION and NO DNS SERVER ...
anyone has any suggestions PLEASE and Thank you

Check the Ethernet connection to the AirPort Express. Make sure that the Ethernet connection from the Comcast modem is connected to the WAN port on the back of the AirPort Express. The WAN port is the one with the circle of dots shown over the port.
It sounds like you are connected to the Ethernet LAN port.

  • WRT54GS v6 DNS Server problem

Running this router for 2 years without any problems (even on Windows7 since las year), recently it won't let me conect to the internet, Network and Sharing Center say that the pc's configuration are alright but no DNS Server response is present.
(Windows 7 Ultimate x86 RTM, Bellsouth/AT&T ISP in Florida, US. DSL conexion, brand new ethernet cables and hardware kept in the best shape, Network Adapter: Realtek RTL8102E/RTL8103 Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20)(v7.2)
    ================================================================================
    What I tried:
Resetting the router and/or modem (connected to a Westell 6100), setting both to default settings over and over (Web based reset and reset buttons)
    IP Flushing in CMD
Getting to the web based configuration for my WRT54GS v6, releasing DCHP, renewing, default settings, etc...
Upgrading firmware to v1.52.7 (latest) to no avail, going back to original 1.52.6.
Device manager shows hardware working properly.
Windows 7 shows me a link to look at the properties of my WRT54GS, when I right click on it, I can also see the option "Enable", but everytime I use it I get "Connection Failed!"
     ===========================================================================================
I'm not much of a tech guy, and reading the forum didn't help me much, so I'm asking for some help please.
Ps: Installed default CD for it with its old EasyLink Advisor to no avail, also tried the latest Lela 2 EasyLink Advisor to no avail.
Also, there was no Default Gateway looking at an IPCONFIG in CMD, and now there is (192.168.1.1), which I use to get into its web based configuration.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

As your ISP is an DSL provider, Most of the DSL Modem has a DHCP on them, so they acts like an Router. So right now you connection type is NAT behind NAT.
To make your Linksys Router work with an DSL Modem. Login to the Linksys Router setup page and below the setup tab you need to change the "Local IP Address" to 192.168.2.1 and click on Save Settings...
Once the settings are saved, unplug the power from Router and Modem, wait for 30sec and then plug the power to the Modem and once all the lights are lid then you can plug the power to the Router and check if you are Online.

  • DNS Server Issues with Comcast and Airport Extreme wifi routers

I am having significant challenges with 3 Airport Extreme (latest gen) wifi routers and my Comcast Xfinitity service.  It once worked just fine, but now I continually get the blinking amber lights stating "No DNS servers" for each of the Airport Extreme (AE) routers.  My configuration is:
Coax cable -> Comcast Xfinity cable modem -> ethernet to 16-port gigabit ethernet switch ->->-> ethernet to 3 Airport Extremes around the house direct connected with switch
I have many wifi devices throughout the house (iPads, MacBooks, home automation devices) as well as direct-connected devices via ethernet (one PC connected to AE router).
Each Airport Extreme router is set with these settings in the Airport Utility app:
    Internet tab=  Connect using: DHCP
Wireless tab=  Network mode: Create a wireless network
Network tab=   Router mode: Off (Bridge Mode)
I have attempted to put the Xfinity cable modem in bridge mode, and use the Airport Extreme to serve up the IP addresses, but still lost internet connectivity.
I have also attempted to set the Network tab=> Router Mode to "DHCP and NAT" but get "Double NAT" error issues as well.
I have tried using the Comcast DNS server addresses (75.75.75.75;75.75.76.76) setting on the Internet tab for the routers and do end up getting a green light, but NO internet connectivity.
Lastly, I have tried using the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8;8.8.4.4) setting on the Internet tab the routers giving me the No DNS servers amber light error and again, no Internet connectivity for either wifi-connected or even ethernet connected (directly to Airport Extreme router) devices (like my PC) despite getting a green light on the router.
Any this point, it really seems that these AE routers are NOT compatible with the Xfinity cable modem or service… (and yes, I've tried power-cycling and restarting the modem, and then the AE routers, MANY times to little avail).
Should I move one of these Airport Extreme wifi routers to before the switch, and have the other 2 in Bridge mode after the switch?  Do I need to setup a specific range of DHCP reservation addresses for each different AE router?
Appreciate any insight anyone can share with this aggravating DNS server issue between Comcast & multiple Airport Extreme wifi routers.

I do not see anything wrong with your basic setup.. the issue is indeed the WAN ports of the AE.. AC version are having problems with some network equipment.
You have listed a stack of things you have tried.. but I want you to move the ethernet patch cable you use on each AE to its LAN port instead of WAN.
Restart the airport when you do that.. and then see if it becomes stable.
In bridge mode the airport moves the WAN port to LAN.. but the WAN port setup itself seems more problematic than the LAN ports.
There are other methods we can try if this does not work.. but in the end.. I would be tempted to take the whole lot back to apple.. they need to start making equipment that works with standard modems and switches.
BTW what brand is the 16 port switch?? Does it happen to be managed (smart type)?

  • DNS fails using router IP address as DNS server address with static IP

This is my first experience with a Linksys router so it might be normal behaviour but just wanted to check. With a WRT54G2 router I have a few PC's I want to use static IP. Up till now with other brand routers including Belkin and Dlink, I have been able to just put the router IP address in as the address of the DNS server when I use static IP. This seemed to work initially with the Linksys but now for some reason, if I don't code the IP addresses of the DNS server provided by my ISP, DNS lookup fails.  If I use DHCP for the PC's there is no problem.
Is that normal behaviour or is there something wrong I am doing?
    Thanks
    Larry

I decided to upgrade my Linksys 54G router to a "Ultra RangePlus Wireless-N Broadband Router (WRT160N)Version 1" . I have had problems with the wireless (as far as I know just wireless portion) connection dropping. I have done some searching I was able to find some settings to try, and it did work better, but not for too long. I have this router within arm reach away, so it's not a distance issue. I have tried many things for about the last 6months or so.
As a last resort, and I do mean last resort and against my better judgement I purchased " Dual-Band Wireless-N Notebook Adapter (WPC600N) Version 1". I was hoping it was a compatibility issue, but there was no difference.
I have heard of trying older firmware, but I can't find any.
I have been a Linksys fan for quite sometime, but as of recently I am thinking of reconsidering if I can't get this resolved with out spending any more money.

  • DNS Server Problem

    Hi,
I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 Enterprise on Virtual Box both are 64bit versions.
I setup the AD DS and the DNS Server role on the server and set the server IP addresses as follow:
    IP: 10.0.2.16
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway: 10.0.2.2
    DNS: 127.0.0.1 (to itself)
On the Win7 machine I let the IP addresses be obtained automatically and set the DNS server IP manually as 10.0.2.16 (the IP of the server machine). IP addresses from the Win7 machine:
    IP: 10.0.2.15
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway: 10.0.2.2
    DHCP Server: 10.0.2.2
    DNS: 10.0.2.16
But I still can't ping to the server. It says "request timed out" once and then "reply from 10.0.2.15: destination host unreachable"
I'm trying to join the Win7 machine to the domain on the server. But I get the error "the domain could not be contacted" every time. The details of the error is that the DNS server are not responding.
My guess: there is some problem with the DNS server setup but I don't know exactly what it is and how to resolve it.
    Thanks for any help!

    Thanks a lot!
I changed both machines to bridged mode.
I can now ping the DNS server from the Win7 machine. That was just stupid from me, got me stuck for 2 days...
