Do I have to use GarageBand's templates?

Hi.
I want to use GarageBand to create podcasts, but do I have to use their templates for design? I have a website already and GarageBand's templates, though nice, don't match. Can I create my podcast files and store them on my own server, and use a link that GarageBand generates to submit to the iTunes directory? And if I have a link on my page that asks you to subscribe to the URL that GarageBand creats (in the Subscribe button) will that work?
Thanks,
Scott

Oh, sorry. Yes, I was referring to the iWeb templates.
So far I've been saving to disk (and of course, iWeb publishes all of the websites that I've made, and some of them are photoshoots with a lot of images...takes a long time), but the folder structure is different from the navigation that I have on my website, so I have to do some mods to my server structure.
Including the RSS code is a little hairy, but I think I've got it figured out. I'll keep experimenting.

  • Unable to use GarageBand under Lion: File not found.

I used Migration Assistant to copy all files, folders, applications, and settings to my new computer. The new computer can't open earlier GB projects I created NOR can I start new projects. Even Apple's own GB Demo Songs refuse to open. My old computer is an iMac Intel Core Duo running Snow Leopard. My new computer is an iMac Quad Core i7 running Lion (10.7.2). The message I receive when attempting to open old projects and demo songs, or create new projects, is the same: "The file couldn't be opened."
I reinstalled iLife and downloaded and installed all updates, but it still wouldn't work. I then re-installed all Apple Jam packs (though some wouldn't install completely in the much-newer environment) and I continue to get the same message, "The file couldn't be opened." My assumption is I need to delete one or more plist files but I don't have a clue where to begin.
I searched the knowledge base and forums but could find nothing about this, but I find it hard to believe somebody else hasn't had the same trouble. I'm hoping it's an easy fix! Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Hi, me too I have a similar problem. I have a macbook air mid-2011, Lion 10.7.2. I have been using GarageBand for a while now, even under Lion. And since this weekend, I can't open any of my files, nor can I create a new project. It says "Files cannot be opened". I do have the permission to read and write, so I don't know what's wrong. I did a test as a Guest and tried to open GarageBand, and yes I can do it. Still I don't know how I could create or open a Garageband project under my username. I have also tried to find my files with Time Machine but still GarageBand cannot open my old files. Any clues? Anyone?

  • How to use Garageband to record interview

We want to record an older relative talking about family history, and people have recommended using Garageband.    I have it on my iPhone 5 but wonder exactlly how to use it.  Has anyone done this?  I have tried recording myself with the microphone icon but have not been able to find the recording or to play anything back.

    Hi tingold1,
GarageBand on your iPhone is one way to record your interviews, particularly if you want to be able to do a lot of editing on the resulting sound file. See this page for an introduction to GarageBand -

  • Chapter Markers using GarageBand

I'm posting this in both Apple TV and Quicktime forums.
I have successfully used GarageBand 3.0.4 to easily and quickly add chapter markers to H.264 Apple TV movies. Much faster than the QT Pro text list method.
Started with an iMovie containing titles and chapters, exported to Apple TV format (m4v file using codec H.264). Opened GarageBand using New Movie Score, set preferences to Export>Movie Full Quality. In Control menu, turned off Snap to Grid. Selected the video track, and track editor allows adding/naming chapters.
Don't worry if the video & audio tracks don't match up. I used my iMovie project timestamps for the chapter times in GarageBand, then verified by watching in GB video preview window. If one has 5 second titles, it's not an issue to have to mess with tweaking the exact timing. One can also add sounds, picts, etc with GB, although I prefer iMovie for better control & tools.
The Share>Export to Disc saving process is quick, and yields the same quality H.264 file with a slightly bigger size. Imports to iTunes, syncs with Apple TV, and shows the chapter titles on the timeline when viewed on the tv (same quality as original ATV movie).
The following are links to some previous forum discussions about chapters:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5265574#5265574
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5266201#5266201

Additional note. While the GarageBand chapters and audio modifications have worked great in several H.264 movies, I was apparently wrong about adding photos or mixing in short title clips in the video track. The GB video editing is too basic, and can handle only one video in the video track when using Movie Score mode (might be ok in Podcast mode, which is unacceptable for Apple TV quality).
Best way is to get the movie totally set with titles etc in iMovie or FCP, then export as Apple TV movie, which can be imported to GB for chapters. I have noted that the chapter timing needs to be slightly ahead of the apparent desired spot in the GB video track (15-30 frames), in order for it to hit correctly when viewing on the Apple TV. Using 5-6 second title sections makes it easy since one can place the chapter marker anyplace in the title area.

  • GarageBand '09 Slow and Beachball when using "Example Ringtone" Template

I'm pretty sure this is just an Apple bug that will need to be squashed at some point, but I'd welcome some other thoughts or advice on this repeatable situation.
    Situation:
When launching Garageband all is well until I choose the iPhone Ringtone from the left AND select "Example Ringtone" from the main panel. This bug does NOT occur with either "loop" or "voice" ringtone types or with any other project type (Piano, Electric Guitar, etc)
However, if I select iPhone Ringtone AND "Example Ringtone," I get a beach-ball for a good 2-3 minutes during which my external drives are thrashing.
I have two externals a MyBook USB 500GB for Time Machine and a LaCie 1TB FW800 for other stuff.
If I disconnect the MyBook and perform the same tasks, GarageBand beach-balls for less than a minute...still obviously something wrong there, but better. If I disconnect all external drives, then GarageBand beach-balls for maybe 5 seconds under the exact same conditions. The presence of these external drives is triggering this GarageBand bug!!
I also have iLife 09 on my Unibody MacBook with no external drives and under the same test condiditons, Garageband takes about the same 5 seconds to load the Example Ringtone template.
Soooo, for some inexplicable reason, Garageband is causing massive reads from my external drives making this template pretty much unusable.
Is anyone else having this problem with this particular template and external drives? Can anyone else reproduce if they haven't had the opportunity to try this before now?
    Am I missing anything?
    Thoughts?

Well, hopefully this new information will be helpful if anyone else runs into this issue. At least until Apple gets a fix in.
The bugged template is called 01. Example Ringtone and is located in the
    \Macintosh HD\Library\Application Support\GarageBand\Template\Ringtone folder
Interestingly enough, these templates, according to command info were actually created in GB4, no idea if that is part of the problem.
Anyway, I tried swapping out the template mentioned above with one of the same name that I created and the bug went away.
    My steps were as follows:
    1) Launch GB and select the Example Ringtone template...wait a long time until GB eventually stops beach-balling
    2) GB automatically saves this template under a new name. Usually My Song# and places it in the GarageBand folder of your user directory
    3) Rename the file from #2 above to 04 iPhone Ringtone.band and place in the template folder mentioned above
    4) When making future ringtones, use the 04 template rather than the 01 provided by Apple until they get it fixed.
Note, you could just replace the Apple provided template rather than adding a new one, but I opted for this approach so I could check after software updates to see if the original problem had been fixed.
I'm still open to the idea that I might have this all wrong, but the evidence seems pretty compelling.
Use Apple's template and 3 minute beach ball. Replace it a near duplicate and the problem goes away.
Hope this helps and if anyone from Apple happens to fly through it would be great to hear about this.

How do I use GarageBand as a amp/speaker to listen to my Electronic Drum set? I have a MIDI-USB cord already but I can't figure out how to listen to my set through the software using my computer speakers?

If you want to listen to the sounds of your drum set, you should use an audio cable and connect it to the computer's line-in, then create a real instrument track.
If you use a Midi/USB interface, you'll have to create a software instrument track and select one of GB's drumsets as the instrument. Hopefully your drumset's midi notes are mapped to the right sounds in GB.

I teach music and are using Garageband. I need to find away were my students that are working on a project can export the files and save them somewhere, so when they 7 days later open Garage band can import there song with all the correct  midi-tracks. When I export the song to Icloud the song become an Mp4 file (I think).  And I can import the files via Icloude.
This is because too many times the song has been sabotages during the week
    Dan Sweden

    Dan,
your students could store their projects in iCloud, only you would continously have to change the AppleIDs of the iPads, so each student could store the songs with their own AppleID.  I don't think this will be feasable.
The other possibility would be to share the projects to iTunes and to download them to iTunes  on a Mac at the end of each lesson. Does your school have Macs? This will not work with PCs.

But then iPhoto 2008 (slide show) possibly or Quicktime 7.6.6 do not cooperate. Before I did the upgrade to Snow Leopard, the new iTunes and Quicktime I had no problems with the set volume being retained in the old Quicktime. The reason I need control over the volume is that all these music files are uploaded to YouTube.

When I use Garageband the window is so large that I can't reach the bottom corner to decrease the window to fit inside the display so that I can see the top and bottom of the window at the same time.
    Any suggestions?

You can reduce the window by grabbing any edge or corner.   You don't have to use the bottom right anymore.
You could also temporarily move the dock to the left/right so you can reach the bottom.

  • I use Garageband 09 to record voice overs via podcasting, female narrator noisy, but keep getting an intermittent clicking sound. It's not the metronome. I have a good quality external USB mic plugged in. Any ideas?

I use GarageBand 09 to record voice overs via the Podcasting then Female Narrator Noisy utility. I have a good quality external mic plugged in. I keep getting an intermittent clicking sound on the audio track. It's not the metronome as that is turned off. I have to edit out the clicking after recording. I can see the spikes on the waveline. Any ideas how I can prevent this happening?

Hi again and thanks so much for replying.
The 'mic jack' on the old mic is both wide and large, measuring about an inch and a quarter from the base (where it comes out of the black encasing) to the edge of the tip (sort of cone shaped). As I can't plug this in directly to any port in the back of the Mac, I thought it might be possible to to buy some sort of adapter so that I could plug in the jack at one end, with a USB connector at the other end to go straight into the Mac. But I see from your comment that you are suggesting a smaller jack itself (i.e., large size jack to small size jack and then plug in to the small round port, instead of jack to USB port)?
At the Mac shop I bought a USB adapter to connect up a second monitor (screen). I've just dug out the package and it's called a mini display port to VGA adapter. But back to the mic issue, I don't want to use the old mic really, I'm just trying to eliminate whether or not my usual mic, or its USB cable, is at fault and causing the clicking.
I looked on Amazon for a suitable adapter but there was mention of these little gadgets having a sound card. As the Mac obviously has its own internal sound card, I couldn't see the point of another (exernal) one, unless it was actually required to convert the sound from input to output (playback) or something. One review said sound quality was lost but the person had a problem with his speakers, not a ticking sound while playing back recordings - which is obviously my problem.
I do have a headset that I used to use for Skype. It has a pink and a green jack. I could plug one into the "headphones symbol' port and try recording again with Garageband. At least the jack is the right size. Again, this is just for the purpose of eliminating whether my good mic on a stand with the anti-popping sheild is at fault.
While my Mac does have both inbuilt speakers (I don't need external ones) and an inbuilt microphone, the latter is not of a high enough quality for voice overs, hence buying an external mic etc. But whatever is causing the clicking or ticking is obviously affecting the quality of my recordings. As you can imagine, it is very time-consuming to edit out the ticking spikes and if the noise appears during speech, you can't edit it out at all.
Please keep the suggestions coming. I am determined to get to the bottom of this for my sake and everyone else who is suffering from the same problem!

All measures in a GarageBand '11 project need to have a tempo. You can adjust the Tempo in the Master Track automation curve and vary it, but you have to set a tempo.  When recording the "No tempo" section disable the metronome and ignore the tempo. Just set the tempo automation for that part slow enough, that the duration of that part is long enough.
