Do I need a base station to use AirTunes?

Hi. I'm new to the wireless world, so forgive me.
I have an AirPort Extreme Card pre-installed on my computer, but no base station. I connect to my DSL internet via ethernet cable. Not through a wireless connection.
I purchased the AirPort Express under the impression that I could stream music directly to the APX using my AirPort Extreme Card. The AXP is connected to powered speakers. Nothing is working, and I can't seem to find an answer to the very basic question: Do I need a base station (wireless signal) to make my AirTunes work?

Hello kyllmode. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is a wireless Internet router. You do not need to purchase another router in order to use the AX to stream iTunes, via AirTunes, to your powered speakers. The default configuration of the AX is pre-set to create a wireless network and is already enabled for AirTunes. You just need to make sure that you connect to the AX's wireless network, using the AirPort Extreme card on your computer when you want to stream audio.
Let's double-check your AX's settings ...
Perform a "factory default" reset of the AX
o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
To set up AirTunes on the AX, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Create a closed network (unchecked)
o Wireless Security: Not enabled
o Channel: Automatic
o Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
Music tab
o Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
o Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
o iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
In iTunes:
iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Do I need a base station?

Hi all. Sorry for the basic question. I just installed an AirPort Extreme card into my iMac (and checked with the Apple folks that my iMac accepts this card) but can't figure out what to do next.
I'm trying to get it to recognize a D-Link wireless router which also connects to a PC and Xbox. Do I need a base station or can the card connect to the router without one? If so, what do I need to do next.
    Thanks much.

dancecarbuzz, Welcome to the discussion area!
The AirPort Extreme card can connect to any 802.11b/g wireless network like the one created by the D-Link.
Open System Preferences->Network and enable AirPort. Then you can go to the menu bar, click on the AirPort icon and select the name of the network created by the D-Link.

This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support.
This is the message I have recieved in installing my AirPort Utility... Can anyone help me?

Old AirPort base stations and Time Capsules aren't compatible with AirPort Utility 6.2, so you have to use AirPort Utility 5.6. As you have already updated, you can't install AirPort Utility 5.6 by the normal way.
To install AirPort Utility 5.6 on your MacBook Pro, follow these steps > http://frank.is/mountain-lion-and-the-old-airport-utility/

  • HT4262 This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support.

In my Airport Utility a read the following message:
This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support." What do I have to do ?? I can use my airport.

I assume that your MacBook Pro is running OS X Mountain Lion ... correct? If so, version 5.6 can run just fine on this version of OS X; it just can't be installed in the traditional way.
Here are the basic steps to install version 5.6 under Mountain Lion using CharlesSoft's Pacifist:
If you haven't already download the AirPort Utility disk image file directly from Apple Support Download
Place the resultant AirPortUtility56.dmg file onto your Mac's Desktop.
    Run Pacifist.
Click on the Open Package option. Find the disk image file that you just placed on your desktop, and then, click on Open.
The utility is located as follows: Contents of AirPortUtility56.dmg > Contents of AirPortUtility56.pkg > Contents of AirPortUtility56Lion.pkg > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility 5.6.app
Drag AirPort Utility 5.6.app to your Mac's /Applications/Utilities folder.
You can now run the AirPort Utility from the Utilities folder.

  • Do I need an 'apple airport base station' to use the internet on my macbook?

I'm considering getting a refurbished Macbook Air next week, which will be my first Mac computer ever, and I was watching some of the introduction videos.
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#wirelessbasics
'Wireless Basics' - At about 0:55 seconds in, it says something about needing what sounds like an 'apple airport base station' to connect my Macbook to the internet here in my home. I currently have an HP laptop that easily connects to our Wi-Fi. I actually need some additional 'apple airport base station' thing to connect to the internet? I can't just connect like our Wi-Fi PC laptops do? Tell me I'm hearing this wrong, because I can't afford some additional 'base station' on top of an expensive Macbook, refurbished or not.

Any WiFI basestation should work but there are two caveats. First, configuring non-Apple basestations is more confusing for newbs than the AirPort is. Second, upgrading firmware can be a real pain for some 3rd party bases - they don't tend to let users know the updates exist and many require a PC to install.

  • Manual Static LAN IP address for 802.11n Base Station when using PPPoE

We have a network of about 75 machines. We want to replace our main router with the new Airport Extreme 802.11n base station. WAN connection is PPPoE so we'd use the NAT function. All IP addresses of our machines on the LAN are statically assigned.
Problem is our machines are assigned to find the router at a specific address: 192.168.0.254. The default base station IP in that subnet is 192.168.0.1. Is there any way to change the IP of the base station to 192.168.0.254 from the default of 192.168.0.1? We can do it if we have it join our existing LAN in bridge mode, but we want it to provide the main NAT functions AND connect to our ISP's PPPoE server WITHOUT having to change all our LAN devices to find it at 192.168.0.1. Possible?

The HH will only show devices which use DHCP in the list of devices, unless you've set the device to use a static IP in the HH Home Network page.  It's a bit of a silly idea and IMO the software on the router is terrible, but you do it like this...
    - Set the printer to use DHCP to get an IP address.
    - Log in to the HomeHub 5 and browse to the Home Network page (http://192.168.1.254/index.cgi?active_page=9130)
    - Find the printer in the list of devices and click on it.
    - Click on 'Yes' next to the "Always use this IP address" option.
    - Set the IP address on the printer statically and update your devices to use the new IP address of the printer (if it changed from what it was before).
That will ensure that the DHCP server in the HH5 doesn't lease the same IP to another device.  This will also allow you to see the printer in the list of devices.

  • Using a wire connected mac as wireless base-station by using airport extreme card

Is it possible to use a mac as wireless"base-station" for a iPhone by using an airport extreme card , if the mac is connected only by wire?
I created a network on my mac and my iPhone is connected to it, but it says the network is not connected to internet.
So can I connect the airport extreme card on my mac to the ethernet of my mac by changing the network settings on my mac?
If not, is there another way?

  • Dual band network using Mini as 11g base station to send airtunes to AX?

Here's what I'm trying to do: set up a dual band network, pretty much exactly as described in Apple's doc (with the AEn as the router, in 5ghz 11n-only mode and accessed by a CD2 MBP with 11n enabled ), but using a Mac Mini as an 11g software base station (via Internet Sharing) to connect a AX via 11g so I can stream music to my stereo via Airtunes. I've got the Mini seeing the AX, and iTunes on the Mini sees the AX for Airtunes, but the CD2 MBP does NOT see the AX, either in iTunes or with Airport Utility. I'm currently messing around with IPNetRouterX in order to get the Mini to bridge it's ethernet connection from the AEn to it's Airport port, but no succes so far. Any Ideas?

The problem is that the Mac mini is creating a different subnet for the AirPort connection. Therefore the MacBook Pro's Ethernet connection to the Mac mini can't reach the AX.

  • I have just bought an airport express and want to set it up as a base station to use in a hotel with my Ipad2.

At home I have a PC wired into a wifi router. How do I set up my airport express with this configuration please?

If you are on a Windows machine, you will need to download the Airport Admin Utility from Apple:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1391
From there, you can configure the Airport Express. Set up the Airport to:
    - create it's own network
    - share an IP
    - use 802.11n 2.4GHz (g,b compatible)
    - use WPA2 for security
Then, test that the iPad can connect to it.
Now, when you take it to a hotel and plug it into their wired network, the Airport will get the IP from the hotel and share it out to your iPad

  • How do I set up an Airport Extreme Base Station ("Snow") for use as fax (on

I'm on a PowerMac G4 Digital Audio version without a built-in modem. I already have a Linksys wireless network set up between my Mac and PC laptop. So... I don't want to use the wireless networking on the Airport...
I just want to configure the Airport Base Station to use the built in 56K modem so that I can fax directly off the Mac. I did that on my old computer that had a built in modem, but I need to know how to configure this G4 and Base Station modem to perform this task.
Please help me connect the right wires (does the G4 connect to the base station with USB?). Then the power cord, and an RJ11 line from the phone to the airport base...
And what software (the used airport I bought doesn't have a software disc).
    Thanks for any help!

Saxparilla, Welcome to the discussion area!
Sorry but the modem inside the AirPort base station (ABS) has NO ability to FAX at all.

  • HT4262 Can I extend a WiFi Network, using a 802.11n Airport Base Station with a 802.11g Airport Express?

Having a new Apple AirPort Extreme (802.11n) I need to extend the network since even the AirPort Extreme provides after about 30 Feet maximum only 50% signal strength in 2.4 GHz and maximum 41% signal strength in the 5 GHz band.
I have an Apple Airport Express (802.11g) but I am not sure that it can extend with it the network to get a better signal strength?
I know I can only use the Apple Airport Utility 5.6 to access the AirPort Express, but I can see also the AirPort Extreme though it (5.6).
Also, it seems that my "old" Wireless Motorola Cable Modem (SBG900) for the same distance (about 30 Feet), which is a 802.11g, gives still a better signal strength (62%) than the Apple Airport Extreme...
I guess I need the proper instructions how to, if it is possible.
    Any intelligent answers available? Thanks.

This is very confusing. The AirPort Express Base Station has three settings (under "Wireless" in the AirpPort Utility 5.6) "Create a wireless Network", "Participate in a WDS network" and "Join a wireless network".
Whereas the first is self-explanatory the second and third seem to indicate, that a relation with an existing Network can be created. This is also indicated, when selecting as the "Wireless Mode:" "Join a wireless network" and then selecting "Wireless Network Name:" where then all available networks 802.11 b/g/n pop up you can choose which to use.
Now, it does not make any sense, that if all these settings and selections are available, that the AirPort Express cannot extend an existing network, considering that the AirPort Extreme, which is a 802.11b/g/n can be connected to. Even the AirPort Utility 6.0 sees the AirPort Express 802.11b/g but when selected alerts that "This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support." And as said, that AirPort Utility 5.6 sees everything and has said setting options.
The way as I see this it is, that if I can pickup an existing network, created with an AirPort Extreme 802.11b/g/n with an AirPort Express 802.11b/g and have the option to "Join a wireless network" such AirPort Express should be able to broadcast the picked up and joint network. Otherwise the setting options for the AirPort Express are nothing else than a distortion of reality to me.
Also, before I got the new AirPort Extreme 802.11b/g/n I had an AirPort Extreme Base Station 802.11b/g (gray) and there I was able to extend the network via the AirPort Express 802.11b/g.
So the above comments do not make sense to me.
Hope you understand that and have a better explanation available.

  • Stupefyingly slows transfer between two AEBn Base Stations using bridge or

I bought two Airport Extreme Base Stations with Gigabit today to use to connect my front room's network with my back room's network.
The transfer speeds using Extend A Network, WDS, with WPA2 and NO ENCRYPTION are incredibly slow. It's about 1200Kbs (that's 1.2Mbs per second, about 200 times slower than it's "supposed" to be.)
Both base stations are using version 7.2.1.
I've tried using the 5Ghz N only, the mixed 8012.11n (802.11b/g), using different channels (1-11), rebooting servers, using FTP, using AFP.
I've moved both stations into the same room AND tried them in adjacent rooms.
Should I just return these things?

You could use DHCP Only......if......the DHCP server provided a list of fixed IP addresses for use on the AirPort Extreme.
Let's say that the OS X server was configured to provide the following IP addresses to the AirPort Extreme, for example only.
10.0.2.10 through 10.0.2.50.  Or, this might be in a different range of say, 192.168.4.10 to 192.168.4.50
The AirPort Extreme would be configured in AirPort Utility Internet > Connect Using a Static IP address of 10.0.2.10, or 192.168.4.10. You would need to manually enter in the Subnet Mask, DNS servers, and IP Address of the OS X server, etc.
Then, in the Network > DHCP Range settings for the AirPort Extreme, you would set it up to distribute 10.0.2.11 through 10.0.2.50 to connected devices, or 192.168.4.11 to 192.168.4.50
Any other AirPort routers that are added behind the "main" AirPort Extreme would be configured to operate in Bridge Mode, so they would simply pass through the DHCP information fromt the "main" AirPort Extreme to connected devices.

  • Use old apple base stations with a new one

Can I use an Apple extreme base station (A1034) with Apple express base station to use feaures like AirPlay and extend WiFi coverage?
Express station would be the main base then (A1034) would extend its coverage and use features.  Would this work or is it too old?
    Jamie

    Thanks for the info.
You are going to run into some problems.
The Mac(s) running Mavericks cannot be used to set up or configure the older AirPort Extreme.
But, even if they could, there is no setting on the older AirPort Extreme to "extend a wireless network".
If you could permanently connect the older AirPort Extreme to the AirPort Express using an Ethernet cable, you would have some limited use, but you would need to have a Mac running Leopard, or Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to set up the old AirPort.

  • Music streaming to Airport Express problem, second base station needed?

    Hi,
I want to stream the music throughout my house. I have 1 time capsule, 2 airport Express units (latest model) and a Mac Mini for the music. On the other hand, I have a macbook, which needs the time capsule for back-up (also wireless). Everything is connected and Internet is working, although, when I am "streaming" music, this does not go so fluently.
Should I need to buy another airport base station and use it only formusic, whilst keeping the Macbook connected directly to the time capsule?
I use 2.4 Ghz and 802.11n (b, g compatible). Airport express units are set up as "extend the wireless network".
    Thanks!

My problem is exactly the same. Only iMac speakers work stably.

  • Use Mac Mini (Mid 2010) as an Airport Base station

I'm moving, and these new house is arranged a little differently, I want to use my Mac Mini as an Airport Base station, and use 2 different Airport Expresses as wifi extenders.  From what I've been reading it should be possible. But when I go into my "Internet Sharing" option, Airport isn't possible there. Will this still work using "WiFi" option? Also while I'm asking, two of my other computers don't have WiFi at all (insane i understand), from what I've read it is possible to use the airport expresses as a WiFi extenders as well as a wired bridge to those two computers. Hopefully this all makes sense. Thanks.

Your best course of action is probably to spend a little money (<$100) and buy a dedicated wireless router.  I don't think you'll find anyone on these forums to say that connecting your modem directly to your mini is a good idea.
If you must do it the way you're proposing, then using Wifi like you say in your original post should work.  You'll also need to configure your AEs to join and extend the wireless network you created off of your mini.
