MY MAC BOOK PRO OR USB CABLE IS ENOUGH?, DO I NEED AN ADAPTOR TO PROJECT FROM MY MAC BOOK PRO OR USB CABLE IS ENOUGH?

What do you mean "project"?
What are you trying to accomplish?
BTW, typing in all caps indicates shouting, is considered rude, and is difficult to read.

  • Export HD project from CS4 - assistance needed!

I could use some advice working my way out of what feels like a sticky situation. Partially because I'm not extremely experienced with video production (espcially exporting), but also because I was a punk and broke that cardinal rule of not switching to HD before you know what you are doing. And thus my cousin's wedidng video has taken longer to edit and export to author a DVD than planned...
It is a big mess to unravel, so if anyone can offer any advice, I would appreciate it.
I have everything edited through Premiere in CS4. Trouble is I cannot figure out how to export the footage in such a way that 1) fills a widescreen tv all the way and 2) is actually the high quality I'm expecting.
    Some detail:
    1) I export into a widescreen format (my preferred export setting is H.264) but when playing the DVD on a widescreen TV, it plays as widescreen, but there is a nice large black border surrounding the entire image - it just doesn't fill up the entire screen. On a non-widescreen TV it doesn't look properly letterboxed and looks extremely close to a 4:3 ratio. You can see the difference between the widescreen letterboxed DVD menu, and the much thinner black 'letterboxing' of the wedding video. How can I fix this?
    2)
The quality just isn't HD like I was expecting, and like it looks like when editing in Premiere. In fact, sometimes it doesn't even seem as good as SD quality, especially when there is motion in the frame and when tracking movement. I filmed with two different cameras I had borrowed from various folks. One camera shot in 1440x1080, and one shot in 1920x1080. I didn't know this till I was pulling the footage in for editing. I don't know if this has anything to do with the quality on export - both look about the same in Premiere when editing. When watching the exported video, it does not handle any motion in the frame well at all - blurred motion is all over the place. It doesn't do this in Premiere. I'm wondering if it is because I should deinterlace the footage? I don't know if my camera recorded in 1080i or 1080p (and have no clue how to figure this out). Or, should I try to turn the 1440 footage into square pixels to correct the aspect ratio?
I've read some forum posts, and am wondering if the problem is that CS4 can't export HD footage for standard def. DVDs. I figured if the file size ended up being small enough to fit on a standard DVD, it would work just fine. I've exported. Perhaps this is the problem with the film quality? In which case, what suggestions are there for how to export?
Essentially, I could use any suggestions about how to export this footage in a format that will play on either widescreen or standard aspect ratio (I'm game for whatever will provide the best quality picture at this point, even if  I lose the sides of my footage converting to 4:3). Or, is it that I need to make some changes before even going to export?
Thanks for your thoughts. And yes, I am so incredibly, fully aware of the folly of moving to a format I know aboslutely zilch about. I actually had that thought when I was preparing to film the wedding and though - meh, I've had no real trouble before with any of my video projects, I've got to try HD someday! UHG!
    Thank you,
    Heather

I filmed with two different cameras I had borrowed from various folks. One camera shot in 1440x1080, and one shot in 1920x1080
That is not the end of the world. Set up an AVCHD sequence (1920x1080 50i for Europe, 60i for USA and non-anamorphic) and drop the footage into that. 1440x1080 will adjust itself.
If you want best quality export your timeline to BluRay (you need a BD burner) Forget about HD on DVD.
If you do not want BluRay you have to settle for less quality on DVD. (H.264 is not an option for making a DVD)
    See export settings:
Once exported load the two files (one for audio and one for video) into Encore, author and burn.

  • Need to transfer project from i movie to DVD, what would be best dvd app to go with iMovie

need to transfer imovie project to dvd...whats the best compatible app for imovie???

There is no acceptable substitute for iDVD.
Apple believes that the entire world has access to fast broadband and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. That worked for some, but is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple. Also, you can complain bitterly here, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between using iCloud and burning DVDs:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced.
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that.

  • IMovie HD/08: Need help merging projects from both versions.

I have some video that was imported using iMovie HD6 (saved to my internal hard drive with some editing already done) and some using iMovie 08. (Save to an external hard drive and unedited). I realized later that iMovie 08 lacks features available on iMovie HD6. I would like to move all video to my external hard drive and merge my projects. I would then like to edit the whole thing on iMovie HD6. I've noticed that I can simply drag my iMovie 08 project directly into iMovie HD6 and directly into my other project. However, it wants to save it to my internal hard drive. (No where near enough space on my internal drive for that). Is it safe to assume that if I were to move my iMovie HD6 project onto my external drive that it would then attempt to import/merge my iMovie 08 project keeping it on my external drive? Also, do I run a risk of losing any editing already done to my iMovie HD6 project if I move it to my external drive? If not, is there a right or wrong way to move it? Also, my external drive is connected to my computer via USB. Am I going to have any problems editing from my external drive because of that?

I am trying to transfer a movie project I made on my work computer (MacBook Pro, iMovie '08) to my home computer (iMovie HD, iBook). I've transferred the files using a Lacie, but when I open iMovie HD on my personal computer, it does not let me open the project I desire.
As you have already found, iMovie '08 projects, as such, are not backwards compatible with previous versions of iMovie. iMovie '08's project basically consists of a list of instructions detailing how a project is to be exported while previous versions of iMovie actually rendered physical file segments ordered properly in a physical timeline reference file.
I can import, but not the whole file, it keeps putting items in the trash. I have exported Mobile, Medium, and Large files.
Basically you have two options. You can either import your raw footage (the Event clips) and "re-create" a project in iMovie HD or export your iMovie '08 project, complete with edits to an HD compatible format (e.g., DV or AIC/AIFF) and import this file into iMovie HD. Unfortunately, this latter approach will not allow you to "manipulate" your previous edits.
Basically, I want to be able to open the file in iMovie, in case I wanted to duplicate it or edit it.
As indicated above, you can import iMovie '08 shared/exported files to iMovie HD but you then have to edit them as source files. To remove a previous edit, you would literally have to delete it from your new project in order to add another.
I also want to be able to continue burning copies of this movie slideshow to DVD (I created a DVD project using iDVD).
Previously authored and burned DVDs can be copy-burned by applications like Toast or used to create stored "image" files that can be used to burn new DVDs on an as needed basis in the Mac OS "Burn" folder or using the Disk Utility application. In fact the "image" file can also be created for this purpose from within iDVD.

  • Need to reinstall OSX - Saving actual project is it enough ?

    Hi all,
I have to reinstall my OSX. I would like to know if saving my actual projects files on a external drive is enough ? Theses projects are made with photos from iPhoto library. Does the project file includes all needed files to build the video ?
    Cheers,
    Ben.

Reinstalling the operating system shouldn't affect your Home folder within the /Users directory, and so it shouldn't affect your Movies or Pictures folders, either.
Your movie projects should be completely unaffected. Mine are never affected by an OS upgrade.
..HOWEVER; it's prudent to finish editing a movie before applying an upgrade to iMovie, QuickTime or the underlying OS, just in case an alteration to any of these may change the way that iMovie - or the Mac - handles your video project.
So wait till you've finished doing all the editing on your current project, then upgrade. The finished project should be unaffected.

  • How do I set up ethernet network having attached a MoCA adaptor from cable inlet into modem? It seems I need a "self assigned IP"?

I live in an old apartment building with very thick walls, and have a miserably spotty wireless network. In hopes of creating an undisturbed ethernet network for my computer and various other gadgets, I purchased two ActionTec Moca adapters, and set it up as suggested in a helpful review on Amazon: put one MOCA adapter "upstream" to the cable modem. The incoming coax with the Internet signal would plug into the MOCA "in" port then the MOCA's "out" coax goes into the coax on the cable modem. Then the LAN port on this MOCA goes into a LAN port on the switch/router. The Ethernet port on the modem goes into the WAN port on the same router. This "triangle" of connections is confusing to someone who is not networking savvy because they assume that all network connections have to be linear." The adaptors light up as they are meant to, indicating that the signal is there, and my iMac tells me thatDiagnostics window tells me that the internet connection appears to be working correctly." Only the little button in the Network Diagnostics panel next to 'Network Settings" is yellow. When I run the Setup Assistant, it says that "You cannot connect to ISP automatically, so you need to enter information to set up your connection. Selec the appropriate item then enter the required information. If you don't kow the infromation, contact your ISP." I checked "I have a DHCP Client ID and entered my IP address as copied from the network panel. It said congratulations you are now connected to the internet!" But then no browser window window would open, and Safari said "you are no longer connected to the internet". What did I do wrong?

I wouldn't expect the oMoCa adaptors to issue IP numbers, simply act as a passthrough to get the connection to the modem. It's not clear how you've got this set up or how the Airport comes into it.
From what you say the modem has several ethernet outputs - is this correct? - then you are directly connect to it by cable; and possibly an Airport Extreme is also connected to it.
Unless you are connected to the Airport either by cable or wireless it doesn't come into your own connection, though other computers may be connected through it.
If all this is as I described the modem must issue the IP numers and the Airport must have 'Connection sharing' in the 'Internet' section (after clicking 'Manual setup) set to 'Off (bridge mode)'. Then it simply passes the IP numbers issued by the modem through to any computers connected through it.
If the modem has only one ethernet output socket then it will be connected to a router (either the Airport or something else) through which everything else is connected, and that router should be set to issue the IP numbers as the modem will simply pass through the IP number issued by the ISP.
Whatever set up you have, you can only have one device issuing IP numbers or problems will result.
Your own Mac should be set to 'obtain an IP number automatically' or 'Use DHCP' (the same thing, and don't use 'DHCP with manual address). The number you are issued with will be in the 'local use' range, probably beginning with 192, and is not the same as the IP number seen by the outside world.

I do some VJ-type work, involving playback of QuickTime files from the computer to projections, and I get good results using ProRes 422. That's convenient, because ProRes 422 is such a great editing codec, too.
Traditionally, VJs use PhotoJPEG codec, which also works well, but it's a bad editing codec. So you would have to export an edited master, then convert.
If you want it to look as good as possible, definitely schedule some time to test the footage on the wall. You may want to change the color correction of your footage to match the projectors. And if you feed the video wall some flat gray, you can see if any of the projectors need to be  adjusted.
I'm not sure what application you're using for playback, but QuickTime Player 7 works well. It has an option to play fullscreen on an external monitor (View > Present Movie…).

  • Can I connect and use a Dell projection unit..several years old...with my new Macbook Pro?  do i just need an adaptor for the multi-pin plug?

I would like to use my old Dell projection unit with my new Macbook Pro laptop, but obviously there is no such plug in the Macbook.  Is there an adaptor I can connect and make it work?  Without the old "F" keys, how do I get the Macbook to provide output to the projection unit?  I don't see an icon on a button anywhere?
Thanks for any help...  trying to become a good Apple user.
    MarkT

You have to determine what connection options are available on the projector.  You probably will need a Mini-displayport (Thunderbolt) adapter. that can accommodate the projector.
    Ciao.

  • Need help transfering a fcp project from one Mac to another

I have two students who need to work on projects on the same computer at the same time-deadlines-and need to move one project AND all the files to another Mac. When we open this file it asks to reconnect everything and it's taking forever to match everything up correctly. Is there any way to scoop up all the files needed in one file as there is in IMovie so that all needed files are associated with the project and move together? Please help if you can, I have a fast external drive to put the files on.

Or make an exact copy of the media files from one drive to another and make sure that the drive names and directory structure are identical. fcp will not be able to tell the difference and the files should not need any reconnecting.

  • Help needed recovering project files from trash

Hi everyone, I am hoping that someone will be able to help me. I just did something stupid!
I created two new projects in iMovie this morning and then needed to clear out the mac in order to speed up a clip as I was getting the warning that my disk was full. So I copied a lot of files from iPhoto onto a hard drive and then moved them to trash including the raw files that I was using for these projects. (I got a bit carried away!) Yes the video files were in iPhoto and not iMovie Events as the last time I uploaded files iMovie was not playing the game.
The files are still on the mac as I have not emptied the trash and they are also backed up on an external drive connected to the mac, but I have emptied the iPhoto trash. I tried importing the files back into iPhoto from trash and only got so far before the disk full message came up again. But even those ones that I did manage to re import are not showing up.
Is there any way that I can continue with these projects or have I effectively ruined them? Do I need to start again from scratch? I hope not as they took me hours and hours to create and had pretty much finished them.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :-)

To see these "other" backups, you need the Browse Other Backup Disks or (Browse Other Time Machine Disks on Snow Leopard or Leopard) option.  It's available by Alt/Option-clicking the Time Machine icon in your Menubar, or by control-clicking (right-clicking) the Time Machine icon in your Dock.

  • I need to output a PAL HDV project from FCP as a PAL DV file with 4 audio t

I need to output a PAL HDV project from FCP as a PAL DV file with 4 audio tracks - specifically one stereo pair to be t1&t3, the other stereo pair to be t2&t4. This is the standard way requested by an international distributor of tv programmes. I understand how to set the sequence in FCP to output 4 audio tracks - either 2 stereo pairs (1&2, + 3&4), or 4 discrete tracks. But how do I then output this as a QT file?
The manual tells me that to export multiple audio tracks, File>Export>QT Movie has it's Config pop-up menu in the Audio Settings area of the General tab of the Sequence Settings. Well, that's set for 4 discrete channels, but the QT export settings only allow for 2 mono or 1 stereo output, and that's what I get when I try it. What it says in the manual just doesn't happen.
Exporting via Compressor, on the other hand, has an abundance of choices of 4-track outputs, none of which are labelled as anything resembling 'discrete'. Would any of those 4.0 settings suffice? Or am I likely to get myself into difficulties further down the line? As I am monitoring for this task on a 2-track audio system, I cannot confirm exactly what I am getting when I use any of those settings.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    John

Call me naive, but I've not heard of splitting the stereo pairs like this before.
What broadcaster? (perhaps one of our EU regulars will drop in...)
You can do all sorts of pairing but it is coincident tracks pairing- eg 1/2 + 3/4
    Sorry I can't offer anything.

I am traveling from the US to France and have a Macbook Pro. Can I just use a plug adaptor or do I need a power converter to plug in?

Just an adapter to change the US plug style to the one in the country you are going to. The AC charger will do the rest. It is rated for 120-240 volts and will adjust on  its own.

How can i transfer files from my hard drive to an USB drive to free up space when the operating system isn't working. or do i need to erase disk through disk utilities without erasing data (but will it delete my programs such as photoshop, office, creative suite?

Connect the computer to another Mac and put it in FireWire Target Disk mode, or use the Disk Utility to clone the drive or image specific folders with the USB drive as the target. After you've copied off everything you want, you'll likely need to erase the drive and reinstall the applications.
