Do I need to add Base Station MAC address to list?

Hi, If I choose to use MAC address filtering on my Airport Extreme Time Capsule, do I need to add the wireless MAC address of the Base Station to the list of allowed MAC addresses???  I'd feel real bad if I set up a list, didn't include the base station's MAC address and then could never get in to the network again because I, in effect, locked myself out???  I doubt that address needs to be included but I would like some feedback on that.
Second, does the one MAC address filter list apply to the Guest Network as well if I should choose to turn it on???  If that was the case, I would just turn off MAC address filtering why guests were present.
thanks..  bob

No. Timed Access would be for wireless devices....computers, mobile devices, printer, etc., that are connecting to the Time Capsule. The Time Capsule does not connect to itself in this regard.

Sometimes, users lock themselves out by mistake by entering incorrect times for devices to connect, and they often forget that they can connect to the base station using an Ethernet connection and get back in that way.....since Timed Access only applies to devices that connect using wireless.

  • Do I need a airport base station to extend my network or can i use my network router?

I bought a Airport express to enhance my current wifi in the house, and i can't seem to get it to enhance it. There is one room that dont have wifi and it is the room i bought it for. Now when i talked with apple they said all i needed was the express and it should enhance it, but i can't seem to get it to work. Do i need a airport base station of some sort or does my current router work fine. I just need some help and its been 3 months and its getting old. So i appreciate any help.

Do i need a airport base station of some sort or does my current router work fine.
I'm afraid that this will not help you, but at least you will have some accurate information.
Using wireless only, the AirPort Express can "extend" or "repeat" the wireless network that is provided by another Apple "n" wireless router.
Using wireless only, the AirPort Express can NOT "extend" or "repeat" the wireless signal if it is being produced by another router from another manufacturer.
In this case, you will need to connect the AirPort Express to the other wireless router using a wired Ethernet connection. Post back if you need more information about this type of setup.

  • Browser corrupting MAC address access-list in 1232 AP

We're having a problem with an access point when we try to build Mac Address filter tables using the browser inteface. Here is what we have:
    Product/Model Number: AIR-AP1232AG-A-K9
    System Software Filename: c1200-k9w7-tar.123-8.JEA
    System Software Version: 12.3(8)JEA
    Bootloader Version: 12.3(2)JA4
Something is corrupting browser generated Mac address filter lists and causing us to have to manually remove the lists using the CLI even though the CLI was never used as the list was being entered initially.
When the browser works, the CLI shows the table as:
    permit 0040.965d.db6b 0000.0000.0000 (3799 matches)
    permit 0016.e3ec.3e06 0000.0000.0000
    permit 00a0.f8ec.9dcd 0000.0000.0000 (7814 matches)
    permit 001c.26c8.3f60 0000.0000.0000
    permit 001a.731e.4f6e 0000.0000.0000
    permit 0040.9652.50ff 0000.0000.0000 (5899 matches)
    permit 0040.9649.08c0 0000.0000.0000 (2010 matches)
    deny 0000.0000.0000 ffff.ffff.ffff
When the browser doesn't work, it shows up like this in the CLI:
    permit 0016.e3ec.3e06 0000.0000.0000
    permit 00a0.f8ec.9dcd 0000.0000.0000
    permit 001c.26c8.3f60 0000.0000.0000
    permit 001a.731e.4f6e 0000.0000.0000
    permit 0040.9652.50ff 0000.0000.0000 (179 matches)
    permit 0015.7032.7e37 0000.0000.0000
    deny 0000.0000.0000 ffff.ffff.ffff (69 matches)
    permit 0040.9649.08c0 0000.0000.0000
With the last permit entry that follows the deny being one that we tried to add.
Is there a way to use the CLI to edit the list so that it can be updated by the browser? Any ideas why the list is getting messed up like this in first place? Do we need to upgrade the AP's software?

Are you IE. If you have Google toolbar check if you have any Pop-up blocker or Anti-spy in the system blocking this . Try disabling them . If it doesnt work try using Mozilla Firefox.

  • WRT610N: Cannot enter MAC address in MAC address filter list

My WRT610N cannot accept a very specific MAC address in any position of the MAC address filter list.  It is a valid address and it was working fine in the filter list of my WRT54G but the 610N will just not take that specific address!  What is this all about?

I recommend to replace the WEP only device instead of taking the risk of a hacked network.
And just forget about the wireless mac address filter. Anyone, who wants to crack your WEP network will collect enough accepted MAC addresses during the cracking process. It's just not worth the trouble to set up the filter and keep the list current...
Thanks for the diligent follow-up gv but I can't replace the WEP-only device for now.  (I need to go through a conversion process for that device to accept WAP and that will take a fair amount of time)  I understand your point about getting accepted MAC addresses but, at least, it requires a bit more effort... Maybe I will return the WRT610 and stick with my old WRT54 until the 610 gets fixed...

  • Do I need a separate base station to stream to a AX

I have an Intel Imac and I want to stream airtunes to an AX.
I do not currently have a wireless network. My Imac is connected to the internet directly through an ethernet cable from my dsl modem.
Can I stream just by connecting the AX to my stereo and turning the airport in the imac on, or do I need a separate wireless router first. The AX documentation makes it look like I need another AX or AE that I would use as a base station?

AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - iTunes Setup
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
    o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
    o Set time automatically: (unchecked)

    o Network Name: <enter a name or leave default>
    o Radio Mode: 802.11n (b/g compatible)
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
    o Channel: Automatic

    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX

  • Do i need an extreme base station if i have an airport express?

I just got an Apple ibook G4 laptop through a program at my school which is Airport ready. I'm not really that computer smart. At home we have 1 ethernet cord attached to a different computer but I want to set up a wireless connection in my room just for my laptop. Can I do that with just an airport express base station, or do I have to have a stationary one first? Would it be easier just to buy the extreme base station even though it costs more? Also, how does the express work? Do you just plug it into the wall, or does it have to be connected to some sort of phone jack, or what? Again, not computer smart at all. HELP!!!

bcbandtiger, Welcome to the discussion area!
Since an AirPort Express (AX) won't support a wired (Ethernet connected) computer, you can't solve your problem that way.
If your only goal is to create a wireless network for the laptop, you need either the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) or any other inexpensive 802.11b/g compliant wireless router. These will provide an Ethernet port for you wired computer and create the wireless network for your laptop.
Do you just plug it into the wall, or does it have to be connected to some sort of phone jack, or what?
It would plug into your home Ethernet connection.

  • Mac-address access lists

I have a single remote device attached to a 1700 sereis router. I need to ensure that if anyone disconnects the device, they can't easily plug anything elses in to the router and hence wanted to use a mac-adddress access list.
I have created an access list as follows:
access-list 700 permit xxxx.xxxx.xxxx 0000.0000.0000, but there appears to be no way to add this to the Fa0 interface on the router.
Can anyone confirm if this is possible on a router or does this only work on a switch?

No, its the Ethernet local LAN interface of a routed link so no bridging going on.
    Config below:
    interface FastEthernet0
description Mufulira Post Office Post Office LAN
    ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 255.255.255.248
    ip access-group 120 in
    no ip redirects
    no ip unreachables
    no ip proxy-arp
    no ip mroute-cache
    speed auto
    full-duplex
    no cdp enable
IP access lst 120 defines just a single host allowed in to a group of servers.
I'm having to tie everything down as much as possible as its for a remote ATM on the end of a Wireless backhaul link and our Risk people are trying to insist that we use mac address security as well. I am already running a GRE tunnel and IPSec 3DES over the routed portion of the link.

  • Need to add an e-mail address to an e-mail symbol/link

Hi, I have an envelope symbol in my .fla file and I need to assign it an e-mail address. I can find the symbol in the library but am not sure where to add/insert the actual e-mail address. The .fla is a template if that is relevant - Thanks, Chris (I am using Flash CS4 and MS Web Expression is my design app.)

If you cannot find that symbol at all in the file when you run it, then place one on the stage and add some code for it. Since your file is using AS 2.0, click on the email symbol and assign it an instance name in the properties panel, let's say you name it "emailLink".
Then, in the same frame on another layer add the following actionscript...
    emailLink.onRelease = function(){
         getURL("[email protected]");
When you run the file online it will open an email window with the address already entered.  If you test it while in the authoring mode, you are likely to have a browser window also appear, but this only happens when testing from your pc.

  • I REALLY need expert opinion with my mac/fcp shopping list!

I work in TV and I'm buying an hdr sr12 so that i can work on my own projects, move my skills along etc...
To edit the footage I'm thinking to buy a 15" 1st generation macbook pro and fcp studio 2??? is this what i need? could i get away with spending less and getting different versions of either? - Any advice is a huge help. It's taken me weeks to get this far.
    Cheers Dan

will i get away with a powerbook g4 and an older version of fcp to edit the hd footage?
It depends on the flavor of HD and which version of FCP you have. For example, FCP HD (version 4.5) only works with one flavor of HD: DVCPro HD. If you're working with HDV, you'll need FCP 5 or higher. For AVCHD, you'll need FCP 6 and an IntelMac. Other HD incarnations have their own requirements.

  • Add radio station to the radio list?

    Hi,
I have my own radio station, I would like to list it on iTunes radio list, how do I go about this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Neil

There is no mechanism for getting a station added to the iTunes Tuner list. No one outside of Apple knows who's running the server that maintains the list since 3Com shut down Kerbango, the previous host of the list, and for some unknown reason Apple has not provided any way of contacting the current provider or administrator for making changes or additions.
I can only guess why this is the case; perhaps Apple doesn't want to bog iTunes down with potentially a huge list of stations (there are after all hundreds if not thousands of iTunes-compatible streams available) and so only provides a sampling.
You might want to consider listing your station through Live 365 or ShoutCast or another such streaming service. That would get it to the attention of a lot of people.

  • How do I clone my computer's MAC address on to the AE base station?

This is just driving me nuts. I've looked at responses to this question on the internet, and it appears that the Airport Extreme Base Station can't perform a function that nearly all WAN home routers have been able to perform for a decade: "cloning" a MAC Address. My internet provider uses the MAC address of one of my computers to identify a valid connection, and my old Belkin router just cloned the computer's MAC address. If the AEBS can't do that then it's a rather serious design flaw, and if I'd known that I'd never have bought the device. I noticed that there's something called a "Client ID" so I input my computer's MAC Address for that, but the Base Station still can't connect to the internet.
I don't want to have my ISP reset my valid MAC address (even if they could, which isn't clear to me) because I may need to connect to the internet directly in the event of problems... say the Base Station malfunctions.
I bought the base station so that I could connect peripherals to it, but if it can't connect to the internet that renders it practically useless.
Are there any workarounds? Anyone have any ideas?

I can see that no one is bothering to respond to this question, so I thought I'd post a resolution. I don't know if one can alter the ID of the AE Base by cloning a computer's MAC address. The next best thing would be to easily alter the MAC address that the ISP identifies as legitimate. If you have COMCAST's telephone modem (which has a battery backup so that it can't be rebooted by simply unplugging it) you can adopt the following procedure to reset the MAC address.
    1. Reset the base station, by depressing the reset button in back with a pen or paper clip.
    2. Unplug the base station.
    3. Reset the Comcast cable modem, by depressing the reset button in the back with a pen or paper clip.
    4. Plug the base station back in.
    5. Use the Airport Utility to set the parameters of Airport Extreme.
This procedure will force COMCAST to recognize the Base Station MAC Address as legitimate for provisioning.
It's not an ideal solution, but it works. If the Base Station fails and you have to use a direct connection to your computer you can follow a similar procedure to reset the modem, and recognize a new MAC address.
Again, the fact that you can't use the Base-connected drives for Time Machine is just plain dumb. Apple originally touted this as one of their main selling points, and then just backtracked. They need to reintroduce this functionality in the next update of Leopard... and it wouldn't hurt to issue an apology for having misled people. The stone wall just ****** people off, as it should.

  • Software Base Station and Tiger

I have a mac with an internet connection which I can share with other macs via airport using the sharing control panel. fine.
However what i want is this:
internet connention -- mac -- airport express -- computer
ie I want to share the internet connection via airport to an airport express and thence to an other computer (that doesnt have a wireless card) linked to the airport express via ethernet cable.
Is this possible? I have tried but there appears to be a problem as you need to have the Mac sharing the intenet connection via airport whilst the airport iexpress is being set up. May I am attempting the impossible. Any tips?
    thanks

However, when the AE is set to join an existing
network I found the the tab relating to ethernet is
all greyed out and there is a message kindly
informing me that the ethernet port is disabled when
the AE joins an existing network.
    Any work around? or impossible?
    Impossible.
In order for the ethernet port to be active, you need to be using WDS, this is not possible with a mac created software base station.
You either need another Airport base station or a wireless adapter for the other computer.

  • Airport Extreme Base Station to connect MacBook Pro to internet?

With a new MacBook Pro do I need an Airport Base station or something other purchase (product) to connect to the internet wirelessly while I travel?
Thank you very much in advance for your time in this matter.

    Duane is correct.
The wireless is built in. Whoever you are connecting to will have a base station. If you want wireless at home you need a base station connected to your internet connection.
    Good luck.

  • HT3486 I have a old 2005 airport base station

Will it still be compatible with my newer devices?

Almost certainly, but some features are unavailable with a circa 2005 AirPort Base Station. It is capable of 2.4 GHz only, while newer ones support both 2.4 and 5 GHz. However, I know of no wireless device that requires 5 GHz so yours will work. The 2.4 GHz spectrum is crowded and thus more susceptible to interference from competing wireless networks.
Newer base stations also use the faster 802.11n protocol. Yours is capable of 802.11b/g only. Also, you will eventually need a newer base station to comply with IPv6 requirements. This is not a major problem today, but it will become one in the future.
If you want to stream video or use AirPlay then you may not be satisfied with its performance.
