Do I need to uninstall older version of Photoshop first?

Nowhere in the FAQs or Install instrucitons, either the text or video install instructions, can I find any reference to the need or lack of the need, to uninstall an older version of Photoshop prior to downloading and installing the newer version. Specifically I will be upgrading from CS2 to CS5.
Should I then assume it is not necesary? And if so would it be wise once the upgrade is done, that then I should uninstall CS2?

Forgot to mention I am using an older but competant desktop which funtions fine using CS2. Windows 32 bit, XP Sp3 Home Edition, 2.56GB RAM.

There is no need to uninstall CS2 before or after. You might find that some things are easier to do in CS2, creating PDF presentations etc. (now moved to Bridge)

If you have Reader 10.x or 11.x installed, there is no need to uninstall. Older, or much older versions should be uninstalled before installing a much newer version.

No, you don't have to.
Both versions can co-exist on your computer.
But keep in mind that Lr 4.3 updates the catalog created by Lr 2.7 (in fact it creates a copy of the catalog and updates the copy). Lr 2.7 is not able to read the Lr 4 updated catalog.
If you try to open it with Lr 2.7 you will get a message saying that this "catalog is too new".
Because Lr 2.7 cannot read the Lr 4 catalog I would recommend that henceforth you do your editing in Lr 4.3 only and use Lr 2.7 only to check things out (Lr 4 is quite a bit different than older versions).
If you would edit in both versions you would get two ever more diverging catalogs.

Need assistance removing older versions of Photoshop Elements. Tried Contol Panel......will not permit uninstall. Says that it is open, but not open from what I can determine. Tried to uninstall Elelents 9 and it says it is not there. Tried Elements 10 and it says error 1316......

Yes, you can.
It is best to use the uninstaller from Adobe. It is on this page:

Because I am having problems with getting Flash Player that works on my pc, I have saved the Adobe Flash Player Uninstaller to my desktop. It is helpful not having to go back to the Adobe page to get it when I need it.
After uninstalling old versions of Flash Player, remember to check that the new version you keep is installed correcly and working properly, go to the Adobe "Find Version" page and follow the instructions there.

Okay, if you're getting that message in addition to the the other messages, try the following procedure.
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Now launch Windows Installer CleanUp ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"), find any QuickTime entries in the list of programs in CleanUp, select those QuickTime entries, and click “remove”.
Next, we'll manually remove any leftover QuickTime program files:
(1) Open Local Disk (C:) in Computer or whichever disk programs are installed on.
(2) Open the Program Files folder.
(3) Right-click the QuickTime folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. (Note: This folder may have already been deleted if QuickTime was successfully removed using Add/Remove Programs earlier.)
(4) Delete the QuickTime and QuicktimeVR files located in the C:\Windows\system32\ folder. Click Continue if Windows needs confirmation or permission to continue. (Note: These files may have already been deleted if QuickTime was successfully removed using Add/Remove Programs earlier.)
(6) Right-click on the Recycle Bin and on the shortcut menu, click Empty Recycle Bin.
(7) Restart your computer.

As far as uninstalling goes, you will uninstall it like you do for any program, which depends on what kind of operating system you have. If you wish to retain albums and whatnot, maybe the following link can provide some guidance.

If you're looking to get a more through uninstall, then Revo Uninstaller is a good way to go. That will run the regular NI uninstallers and then search for leftover registry entries and files. You can also use MSI Blast.
