Do I really need to change my router?

I havea D-link gigbit router I've been using happliy for some time. It's also configured properly for VPN connections, which was tricky. Why must I change to the slower speed router that Verizon sent me?
Or can I safely ignore the broadcast voicemail I got that says that my service will be interrupted if I don't change routers?
Advicxe appreciated...

  • When do I REALLY need to change toner cartridges?

I replaced my original black cartridge already, but I have never replaced the color cartridges. Black is currently indicating "low" and the color is indicating "very low", yet I am still getting excellent quality prints.  However, just today, the printer started to cycle through "Cleaning" after each 1 page job. Is it time to replace?
    Thanks--

    @rain007
That is great news! You  stated that these were the original color cartridges...if these are the original starter color cartridges that shipped with this printer than the predicted page count is around 600 pages not the 1300 I started earlier. The 1300 pages count yield is for color cartridges that you would buy to replace the started cartridges that ship with the original printer.
Let me explain...this printer ships with what we call "starter cartridges", cartridges meant to get you started printing and usually have to lower page count. You replace these with a higher page count cartridge (the ones I started in the early message) soon after setting up the printer or within the first year, depending on how much you print.
Because you are at 3005 pages on the color cartridges, I would replace the color cartridges if these are in fact the orginal starter cartridges. While you might not be seeing the issue or a degardation in your print jobs today, it will probably presist in the future because you are still using the starter cartridges. But again this is going to be your preference.
    Does this make sense?
Looking forward to hearing what you find out about your firmware. Please let me know if you have any questions about this above information.

  • Need Advice on Best Router to Connect to Fios Actiontec M1424WR

From reading several of the postings I too want to connect a second router to my network to increase my connections speeds.  Currently I have fios 35/35 but of course I never reach such speeds wired or wireless.  So many routers are available but I want to make sure I purchase one that will do what I need.  What then would be the best router for me to use with this Actiontec.  I live in a 3 story home and my actiontec is on the top floor of my home.  Assistance would be appreciated.

Try a hardwired connection to see if you get the speed. No need to change the router out if you get 35Mbps or higher out. Even the oldest ActionTecs/Westells are capable of doing 100Mbps. If you're trying to get such speed on Wireless and have confirmed it's coming in, add an Access Point such as the Trendnet Easy-N Upgrader (Make sure your devices support Wireless N as well!) and shut off the FiOS router's Wireless or re-purpose it for Wireless G devices.

I am now living in the UK and need a UK account for my apple ID but my US account won't let me change it because I have some store credits. It is only about 7 or 8c and I no longer have an american credit card to charge any more to it to use up the credits. Hold on,
Have you talked to your carrier to confirm the unlock?
What was the procedure you did to unlock the phone?
Standard unlocking procedure once processed by the carrier:
    Backup in iTunes
Erase the phone (ignore restore terminology here)
Plug the phone to the computer and then launch iTunes
    Wait for unlock notification.
    Restore the backup.

**** little info about your equipment.
If you just replaced the router with an Airport Extreme or Express:
disconnect the modem from power, disconnect the new router from power, connect the modem to power and wait till it os fully started up, then connect the new router to power. After a while the amber light will turn to flashing, then after a while it will turn to green. Then with AirportUtility (in Aplications/Utilities) it should be configured with the password.

    Hello SalsburgD
The first thing I would check is to make sure that the router is using the recommended settings to get online. Another troubleshooting step is to create a new Network Location and then join your network to see if that changes things.

  • Dynamic Routing Protocols - what do I really need to know?

Ok, ridiculously broad question I know but....what I'm trying to figure out is, let's say I'm in a large coproration and I have multiple field sites in different areas of the country so the network setup may be somewhat complex but when it comes to setting up the dynamic routing...is it as simple as let's say, configuring a router to use BGP for whatever portion you designate then just letting it be? is it somewhat challenging to initally configure dynamic routing protocols (i.e. how often have you found yourselves worrying about admin distance, areas (I don't even know what an "area" is yet either so if anyone could explain that I would appreciate it), etc..
So in short, are dynamic routing protocols "Set it and forget it" or do they require a ton of planning to setup? I'm familliar with the differences between them (i.e. OSPF, RIP, EIGRP,etc..) and the differences in link state and distance vector but I just wanted to ask about the setup of the protocols themselves.
    Thanks!!

You can exchange routes between protocols with redistribution.
The problem with the question is, as you say, it is too broad to really answer properly.
All routing protocols have different considerations so what you might do for EIGRP you may not do with OSPF and BGP is different altogether.
As a general answer if you are enabling it across a WAN all take a certain amout of planning and design and they all rely heavily on what you have done with your IP addressing in terms of summarisation etc.
The actual configurations to get a basic setup running are relatively simple, certainly for IGPs, but as your network grows you may find the configurations becoming more complex
BGP is a very different in that there are many different commands you can use to influence the path traffic takes but even here to setup a very basic BGP peering only requires a few commands.
But no routing protocol in a large environment should just be configured with no thought as to how it is going to work, traffic paths, number of routes etc.
You can do it but you may well find as your network grows you will end up having to revisit the whole thing because it is not working as you intended.
Like I say it's too large a question to really answer because each routing protocol is different and may or may not meet the requirements of the network.
If there are more specific questions then please feel free to ask.
    Jon

  • I changed my router password, now I need to login each time....

I have a MacBook Pro and recently changed my router password (from ASCII to HEX). Now my MBP recognizes the wireless signal (full strength) but I cannot pull up web pages without re-detecting my network and typing in the new password. A minor annoyance, but it would still be great to have it back to where it would remember the password.
    Thanks,
    John

Changing the keychain worked the first time that I did it, but has not worked since. I still have to find my network and re-login. I also checked my keychain to make sure it was remembering the correct password.

  • Need help on which router to buy for my BB 8320

Now i know 8320 is dated but at this point i am not planning to change anytime soon .
So I have a router which is kinda old, it didnt really occur to me since it worked. When i got my bb 8320 i was in a hotel and i could connect through their wireless without any hassle. I could surf, use youtube, name it.
When i got home i couldnt do anything, i spent countless nights trying to figure out waht was wrong then i realized its my router. If only BB said somethign it wont support old routers then i wouldve saved myself hours of self-loathing.
Anyways I also have gone to my friends house, and i could connect to her linksys router without any hassle. i was the one who set her router up and we bought it this year. i didnt do anything special, configuration-wise or w/e.

  • I REALLY NEED HELP WITH MY CURVE 9300'S WIFI!

    HI !
i have a blackberry curve 9300, OS5. I got it secondhand. It worked really great, but the problem started when I've done that thing within the host routing table. Though my wifi is connected, I can't use the internet. whenever I tried the BB browser and any other application (e.g. facebook, opera mini, etc.) i get a message that says 'i am not in an area that supports blah blah...' or 'unable to connect to internet please try again later'. I checked the browser under browser config and it is set to my local network provider. i changed it to hotspot browser, saved it. But whenever I go back it also goes back to my local network provider. i have tried almost EVERY troubleshooting I've read on this forums and in other forums but still no luck. The problem worsened when I did a security wipe on the emails, contacts, etc.
    -APN settings are disabled
-default browser set to hotspot browser
    -firewall disabled
    -data services are on
Everyone said that it has nothing to do with that activation enterprise so I did not configured it after wiping.
I also tried doing a hard reboot (pulling the battery out and waiting for 5 minutes before turning it on) but it will only fix the problem for sometime and it will go back again.
Calling my network provider would just suggest to get a plan when in fact, I was able to use the device's wifi well before without any plan.
I don't want to upgrade my BB to OS6 coz it easily drains the battery of device and I cannot afford doing that because I go out a lot.
I also tried changing my sim card and network provider but wasn't successful.
I also tried deleting the name of my local network provider in the service book under options.
What do you think could be the problem? Any suggestions? I really, really, REALLY, need help.
PLEASE ! THANK YOU VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE!

    Hi miochan984,
    Welcome to the support community!
A supported data plan from your mobile network provider may actually be required to use the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones application as well as the browser. I would recommend verifying with them which services they support over a Wi-Fi connection without a data plan.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

  • Wireless - G Range Expander. I really need help.

I am completely computer illiterate and nobody I seem to ask knows anything about computers. So, please, use layman's terms because I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.
I currently have a Belkin router that says "Belkin Wireless G 2.4 Ghz-802.11g" downstairs. I play video games in my room (upstairs). Most of the time, my latency is really, really high in my room and it's at times unbearable. When I bring my laptop downstairs to play closer to the router, it works great. I can't ALWAYS play in downstairs and for those of you addicted to MMORGs, you know how bad it is when you're trying to do something with a group and you keep disconnecting. Anyway, somebody told me to buy a range expander and I have without even reading about what kind to get or anything like that. I've bought the Linksys Wireless - G Range Expander. I did the auto-configuration thing and it recognized my router's name and all that but wouldn't connect to it. On the Linksys FAQ it says:
    9. Can I modify the wireless standard that the WRE54G Range Expander will use? * Yes, you can choose from 3 different modes. These are: “Mixed”, “G-only”, and “B-only”. Choose “Mixed” for a network that consists of 802.11b and 802.11g-compliant devices. Choose “G-only” if wireless clients and access points that are making use of the Range Expander are comprised of all 802.11g-compliant devices. Choose “B-only” if wireless clients and access points that are using the Range Expander are all 802.11b devices.
I think that's what I need to do. HOW do I modify the wireless standard? Or what am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help you can give me.
Message Edited by emmamaat on 12-09-2007 05:20 AM

Get a computer and connect it to the range expander, make sure you press the reset button on it before anything else.... then set a static IP on your computer...
the reason behind this is you would need to change the IP address of your range expander to follow the IP segment of your existing netgear router.... after setting the static IP 192.168.1.x subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.1.1 on the PC, launch a browser and type 192.168.1.240 then use admin as your password... if you are on the setup page of the range expander, look for the IP address and set it to 192.168.0.240 same subnet and gateway 192.168.0.1 if needed...save the settings and it should normally just expire on you... after changing that, get the range expander and press the auto config button while beside your netgear router... wait for the lights to blink, then release and wait for it to turn blue.... if you have wireless security, connect the range expander instead on the router wired first (as if it was a PC) then go to a computer connected to the router and access 192.68.0.240... admin as password then change your wireless security to the same one as your router... save the settings then turn the range expander off... detach it then turn it on again... try checking the lights if both turn blue...you can place that on the least range you get from the router and it will repeat the signal for you....goodluck and try to get someone tech savvy fo help you just in case..
