Do you offer any device like a dvd reader for my iMac?
I'd like to watch a series of DVDs i have and i'm only able to do so on my laptop. Does anyone knows about it?
i bought a samsung external cd and dvd burner earlier this year after an extensive look for an external optical drive under $150
i found that on the cheaper end (as in under $120 in Australia) it was hard to find a dvd player whose company OFFICIALLY supported use with macs (in case there were any problems).
Samsung do list there drives as mac compatible - that was a very good thing for me and my choices. Mind you i've never been too impressed with samsung phone support service when it comes to my wife's galaxy s2 and the two times i called them, but that's another story
i picked up a cheaper samsung (about $35) which is the se 208db. i have used this to rip (so far) 150 cds and there has been no problem. it can be a little noisy in that process, but nothing too major. i' m assuming you won't be playing yourdvds on very low volume. I picked that one up as i thought if it fell apart or had any major dramas for my use, it would only be a loss of $35
and i must say that at $35 i dont expect this to last a few years with heavy use but i'll be stoked if i can burn all 800 cds that i am planning to and get more than a good year out of it - i think there is a 6 month or 12 month warranty on it (i can't remember) but hey, it's only $35. so 6 months of major heavy use is a happy minimum for me and more than one year of heavy use is a bonus
there is also a samsung se506ab - this is also a blu ray PLAYER (not burner). this was my second option - at around $100
i also looked at philips options but they didn't have that MAC support that i was looking for for piece of mind
others here wil say all external drivers will play with macs however i know there have been a few instances found here and other forums where people have had a few issues and the companies washed their hands of the problem
when you get an idea what might be what you are looking for also look at the reviews on amazon - always useful
i also believe the apple optical drive is over priced (by quite a bit) (eg compared to the samsung se506ab which plays blu ray and the reviews on its reliability are not as good as i would hope for - but hey....you know if you end up with a problem, apple will replace it

Preparation
Before you connect any device to a new library go to the Devices tab of the the preferences panel via Edit > Preferences (Windows) or iTunes > Preferences (Mac) and ensure the box next to Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically is ticked. You can now safely connect the device to your computer without the danger of media being automatically deleted or overwritten.
If this device contains contacts or calendar items that are not already on the computer you are using, and that you wish to recover, then make sure you have at least one contact & one event in the applications that will sync with the device (e.g. Windows Address Book or Outlook under Windows, iCal & Address Book on a Mac).Dummy entries will do, but there must be at least one if the data is to be retrieved from the device in step 7 below.
Transfer purchases
You can transfer your iTunes Store purchases into a new library, after connecting the device, with the menu itemFile > Transfer Purchases from <Device>. You should be prompted to authorize the computer to your iTunes account if you have not already done so. If your device holds content from more than one account you will need to authorize each one.

Back up (iOS only)
If this is an iOS device you should now right-click on it (control-click on a Mac) in the left-hand column of the iTunes window and click Back Up to make a backup of the current settings and application data on the device.
Recover other media
iTunes only permits the transfer of iTunes Store purchases. If your device contains other media that you've ripped from CD or downloaded from other online stores you can either go back to the original sources or use third party software to extract your data from your device. There is a list of some of the software available below.
Recover other purchases
Your device may not have held all your iTunes Store purchases. You can recover qualifying purchases from your account by visiting the home page of the iTunes Store and clicking on the Purchased link in the Quick Linkssection in the right-hand column.

Restore (iOS only)
Having backed up your device, and rescued all the media from it that you can, you should now restore the device from the backup that you took earlier to ensure that the device is properly associated with this new library. Right-click on it (control-click on a Mac) in the left-hand column of the iTunes window and click Restore from Backup...
Sync
Set up your preferences for syncing Music, TV Shows, Podcasts, Info etc. then click Sync. For a device that holds calendar or contact information you should be prompted to restore or merge. Click merge to copy this information into your computer. Your device is now properly associated with your new library and you shouldn't have lost any data.
Backup your library
For the future you should backup your library to a separate hard drive or network share as restoring a backup is much easier than the process above. The user tip Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy gives a suggested way of doing this effectively for Windows users. Mac owners can make use of Time Machine, or useCarbon Copy Cloner which does a similar job to SyncToy.This is the ipod touch forum.

I am unable to download updates directly to iPad 2 , now trying to reinstall one from scratch but download keeps stopping and the restarting. Can you offer any advice, this happening when trying to download to laptop in itunes as well. Have tried to download on different broadband lines without success. Is this an apple problem due to high demand or something else?
Everything has worked well until about a month ago, up to date iOS 5 and itunes installed. Tried resetting numerous times, turned off all apps still no joy. Ipad was great but now feeling buying one was mistake. Also recent music purchase was useless and tunes would not play correctly.Since this is happening on the iPad and the computer, it might be worth a try to reboot your router - unplug it from power for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again.
Quit iTunes on the PC, reboot it and the iPad as well
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons -
The "Pin as app tab" produces tabs that do not persist across sessions. I have this problem on two installations (PC and laptop, both running Win7), and it's really annoying (since the Permatab Mod no longer works in Ff4). Can you offer any assistance?

No, not that I know of. If there were, it would be harder to use than
a + b + c + d + ...The first is a comma-delimited list of columns, with a function name and parentheses.
The second is a +-sign delimited list, with nothing else needed. -

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect to your computer & click on the "Update your device using iTunes".
Tip - You may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. After you update to iOS 5.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

Being disabled you offer a lot. Do you offer more storage space in the cloud for disabled people?
I haven't used or have a lot of things on my old IPhone and IPad. My phone though is full and I can hardly use it. I don't have any idea how much storage I have on my phone so I am wondering since Apple is helping through the Accessibility program do you offer more space in the Cloud?
I have a Ipad, Iphone and a PC with a lot of memory. What my problem is I am not under memory problem it is I have duplicates of to many problems using and running Adobe product. Nothing installs like it should so I keep trying and now I don't know what is what. I need help from Adobe but I cann't seem to get any. I have done so much to just download files and nothing downloads like it should.

Have a new 24" Alloy iMac and well, having moved my main computer from a PC to a MAC is great, iLove it! Problem though is there are lots of times where I could utilize a 2nd CD/DVD drive. Apparently the external drive for the MacBook Air is exclusive to that (which doesn't make any sense to me - Apple would sell a ton of these if they made them non-specific rather than to only a small % of sales). So I've been poking around here on the forums and I've seen some referenced to MacSales.com site - but with such a beautiful machine as an iMac, I can't bring myself to getting one of these butt ugly things. Found a handsome LG CD/DVD with Lightscribe external drive, but no evidence of Mac support.
Where can I get, or how can I get an external DVD drive for my Mac? I'd rather avoid patching if possible.
Better still: Apple - update the MacAir drive to be universal for your machines please!
Thanks!OWC (macsales.com) would be a good source, since they are very Mac-centric and should know what works well and what does not work well with Macs and Mac OS X.
They may be boxy and "ugly" but those full-sized tray-loading drives are the most reliable type. Plus with a tray-loader, you can read the strangely shaped and mini- discs that would choke a slot-loader.
If you want more style, LaCie is also Mac-oriented and they have some choices.

Dual Layer DVD reader for Sun Blade 2500?
Can anyone recommend a dual layer DVD reader that will work with the Sun Blade 2500 (Silver)? Either something to replace the built-in single layer reader or something that will work externally either via firewire or USB.

I know this sounds crazy but I recently installed an Airport express and an Airport Extreme, I worked on it for several days and everything seemed to finally working like it should using manual configurations so it is all right as far as function goes. Later on I found out I had to do a restore on my new IPod and the latest iPad. No other changes were made to the system using snow lepoard 10.6. I tried for several days to restore these devices with no explanation of the problem. I could not use wi-fi or cellular to update any of the devices. Don't ask me why but I shut the computer down and removed every usb device except for the wireless key board that came with the latest iMac system. I made sure everything was the latest version of my applications. It did not affect my DSL or connection to the internet. I even removed the thunderbolt cable so I had 1 usb connection to the computer. The system was setup just like it came out of the box. I brought up iTunes and connected the USB cable to the iPad and selected restore. I had used iCloud to back everything up when I first bought the iPad and iPod. I also made sure iOS 6 was installed. I clicked restore and it loaded without any problem in just a few seconds without having to sync anything. I checked when it was done and it worked exactly like it did when I first bought them from Apple. The only strange thing that happened was I purchased a brand new generation iPod from Apple (which was made in China). I had not installed any apps for several weeks and had no problem with them. This seems crazy to me that you would have to reset he computer to it's original setup in order to restore the latest iPad and iPod software and devices. The only item that I did not have any problem with was the iPhone. Has anyone had this problem? If so how did you deal with it. Was it the airports, made in China the new iOS or the new iTunes that is causing this? gillie70
Try a reboot of your ipad. Hold the Sleep/Wake button and Home button simulataneously. Keep holding, ignoring the red slider, until the Apple logo appears. Release the buttons and let the ipad restart. A reboot often fixes numerous problems.
Also are you aware that by suncing with a different computer it is likely the personal stuff you had on your ipad from your imac will be removed?
The ipad is designed to sync with only one device. -

I'm trying to secure some files by encrypting a disk image (DMG file). I'm doing everything through the terminal so that I can script it.
For the first step I want to mount the disk image file. But, I'm struggling to find a way to mount the disk image so that it becomes a normal part of the file system. Under Linux I would do something like this:
$ mount -t ext3 /dev/hda1 /home/steve/projects/privatemount
Under Mac OS X, I can't get it to work. I found a hdiutil command but there are all sorts of issues between it and the Finder. The closest I've got is this:
$ hdiutil attach -verbose -nobrowse -mountpoint /Users/steve/Projects/privmount /Users/steve/Projects/private-encrypted.sparseimage
Which mounts it as a directory from terminal (great), and doesn't show it up in the Finder as a removable device (great). But, the problem is that you can unmount it (hdiutil detach) while you're accessing the directory i.e editing a file. This is no good because I could lose files (seems like a bug to me). If I edit the file from vim from the command line then lsof shows the file being used. But if you access the file through the Finder i.e edit it with textmate, then lsof doesn't see the file access!
Does anyone know what the magic incantation is to mount a device from the terminal as you would a normal UNIX, have the Finder not show it as a removable device, and ensure that you can't unmount it while a user is accessing the contents?

Yeah that works but it shows it as a removable disk (as your second post pointed out). I'm hoping there's a solution where it won't show up as a removable disk. It's just annoying not being able to stitch together a seamless file system from a bunch of disk images!

I receive a newspaper link biweekly and was always able to download the material and read it at leisure. I recently updated to the latest version of firefox and since then I am not able to get the publication. A widow shows that the information is being received from the host. At a short time the window disappears but I do not see the publication.
@sanjampet: I have already read the link you provided and none of the solutions work, which is why I posted here.
Safe mode just doesn't activate. I hold shift for as long as possible until eventually I get the prohibited symbol. When I hold shift I see the apple logo and loading icon and then eventually prohibited symbol, its as if I wasn't holding shift at all, which makes me wonder if the shortcut is even correct? And I know its not a problem with my keyboard or my timing of pushing shift because holding alt/option works as usual.
Holding C to load from the installs disc doesn't work either, which eliminates all the solutions based on that. Its the same as safe mode - I hold the button until I eventually get prohibited symbol.
I also tried selecting my Mac hd via holding alt key - same result: prohibited symbol.
I also tried selecting my installs disc via holding alt key and a strange thing happens: I see the apple logo and loading wheel but this time it is stuck on the apple logo and loading spin thing for about 20 minutes while there is lots of noise and activity coming from the CD drive..
I also tried resetting the NVRAM/PRAM, which DID seem to have an affect (screen was brighter + startup sound was louder) but I still see the prohibited symbol like all the other times.
I'm yet to be able to get past the prohibited symbol, the only way around it so far is to load the windows partition if my HD.
