Do You Think I Bought The Right MacBook Pro

Here is the story and I am hoping some of you with the new Macbook Pro will see this. Back in June I had a 12" Powerbook G4 with the 867 ghz processor. I bought a 13" Black Macbook with a 2.2ghz processor that I loved, but I had almost filled up the hard drive. When I saw the new Macbook I decided to sell my current Macbook, and get one of the new ones with a bigger hard drive. Pretty simple right? Then upon further review the firewire issue came up. I still have my old Powerbook (my daughters computer), and a Imac G5 all of which have firewire. Although I don't use it that much it was hard to buy a "NEW" computer that had less features than my older ones. Just for kicks I went on the Apple website, and saw a refurbished Macbook Pro 2.4 Ghz, 2gb ram,and 200gb hard drive for about $50.00 more than the new Macbook. So I figured for $50.00 more I got more ram, a bigger hard drive, a bigger screen, 2 firewire ports, and a lighted backlit keyboard. I realize any of these choices run circles around the computer I had just 4 months ago, but I probably won't be buying another laptop for at least 4 or 5 years. So I am torn between waiting a few weeks and paying $600.00 more to get the latest and greatest Macbook, or will I be so impressed with the Macbook Pro I just bought that I will not break a sweat? Also what do you all think about all of the glass in the new one (screen and trackpad}? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Unless there is a particular feature of the new Macbooks you require the 2.4ghz early 2008 (Penryn cpu) Macbook Pro would be an excellent purchase, as it has a good balance of features and will be very fast (note the GPU is still faster than the improved Intel internal GPU chipset).

Your best practical option is buying a 1TB external HD for $65
The "low" capacity of the SSD on the Air and entry level Retina are meant to be working platforms for these computers.
Meaning ALL your programs and your working data (stuff you use at least every week).
To try to use either the Air or Retina as a storage platform of any king (lots of pics, music, movies etc.) is both not indicated or practical.

There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris. It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.

Final Cut Pro X does run extremely slow on the fastest macbook pro

So I bought the fastest MacBook Pro 2011 2.3 GHZ i7 8GB to start editing with final cut pro x. Even put in two Solid State Drive (vertex 3 max iops) (Vertex 3) 256GB.
So already to start and than the dissapointment. Final cut pro x is so slow that it is impossible to work with. constantly green image, movie freezes al the time. and the beachbal is constantly on the screen.
I must be doing something wrong but Can't figure it out. Editing the same files under Imovie is smooth without any problems?

Your first going to have to remove all your personal data off the machine to a external storage drive, do not use TimeMachine when it asks as this will copy the entire drive and is unnecessary at this time (also takes too long).
You need to drag and drop copy your personal data folders (Music, Pictures, Movies etc) to a external storage drive, once done, unmount and disconnect this drive.

Next your going to follow the Zero Erase and install method for your OS X version, either 10.6 or 10.7, here
How to reinstall just OS X or erase/install OS X
10.7 requires your AppleID and password to install, so make sure to have that ready.
Once you reboot your into the real setup of OS X, which will require your name etc, so it's now your machine.
Install your programs, iLife package is only free for the owner of the machine.
If you have the 10.6 machine specific disks, then it's on there.
If your using 10.7, then you'll have to purchase it from the App Store.
Last, return your files from the storage drive, consider setting up a TimeMachine or clone on the external drive.

When I mess with the setting on my mac mini, it goes from saying that that is one of the devices to my macbook pro being the 2nd device. I think that something happened as a result of my using the migration assistant and now it thinks that my macbook pro and my mac mini are one and the same computer. Any ideas?

In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem. Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page. Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)

I'm have big problems using Text Edit on the new laptop--the curser does not go where I want it to go for editing, I cannot get the text to be a clear or as large
as with the older Laptop. Similarly, I cannot find a way to enlarge the menu bar. But the text edit is my biggest problem right now. I have reviewed all the preferences, particularly those in Universal Access, to no avail.
I finally gave up, used dropbox to send the text edit document to my old laptop, and continued with ease. But this is not the way it should work. I bought the
new laptop because the old one is showing signs of age.....

Yes, I did that. They have uppgrades for the dongles, but just untill Mac Os 10.7. Their solution is to buy a new modem from them or getting one for free if I sign a contract for 24 months! So, i think from that side not very helpful.
It is just that I do not want to buy a new modem, when it works in quite recent computers and after having spent money in the new Mac.

HT1414 having bought a new MacBook, I wanted to Sync my iPhone4 to it, but it insists the only method to do so is to "Erase and Sync" or "Cancel" which leaves no option to just use iTunes on the new MacBook Pro - how annoying is that???

I have had the iphone4 for 2 years now and I bought a new MacBook Pro, opened iTunes and it knew I already had other machines with iTunes sync'ed with it but it still insisted on offering one option or sync'ing with new MacBook - "Erase and Sync", which means deleting EVERYTHING on the iphone. What if I want my iPhone to dictate and get iTunes on the Macbook to match up with the iPhone??? Or at least get iTunes to relate to what my iTunes account obviously has on it and update that way. Come on Apple, as per usual, very pretty but not very practical!!!

You can only sync everything with your one syncing computer/iTunes library. Yu can:

You cannot download the same Apps that you have on your iPhone. They are two seperate stores.
The store you have on your iPhone is the same for any iDevice (iPad, iPhone and iPod)
The store on your MacBook is only for Macs.

I bought a new macbook pro and now every time i try to buy anything with my apple id it doesn't go through. I tried Ibooks and iTunes but neither one will work. I have registered this computer and even tried unregistering all the other computers but that did not do anything. I also checked my form of payment and that is not the problem either because i have no problems what so ever buying anything on my iPhone or my desktop computer.

Essentially you need to copy over the itunes folder

Over to your macbookpro I suggest using an ethernet cable as it is way quicker. Put it in the same spot on the new Macbook Pro

Storage space on the iPod would not affect shuffled playlists or playlist shuffling, though substantially full iPods may wind up skipping songs on larger playlists after a while, and require a restart. As for compressing the files themselves, you can automatically re-encode files to a lower bitrate by checking the box on the summary page when your iPod is connected to your PC/Mac.
As for the shuffle problem, after restarting your iPod (hold the center button and Menu for a few seconds, until the Apple logo appears), make sure you're telling the iPod to shuffle the songs in a playlist by repeatedly clicking the center button until the Suffle Menu comes up, then scroll to the right to turn it on. From that song forward, the playlists' contents should be shuffled every time the playlist ends, or is accessed from a new song.
Shuffle does sometimes turn itself off, I've found, so double-check the setting is still on. Also, iPods shuffle by randomly assigning a playlist order for your songs, which is different from traditional shuffle (on, say, iTunes or Windows Media Player, where the new song is determined at random upon the current track ending. The iPod only chooses a random order of songs when you shuffle, to conserve battery life and queue up songs coming up on the playlist in the event of a shock).

What do you mean " back up my photos or Apps"?
The photo sync is one way - computer to ipad.
You can transfer itunes purchases. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases
Copy everything from your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

What kind of wireless router are you using? more importantly which protocol are you connecting with? Are you and wife connecting using the 2.4Ghz band? or do you have a dual band router that offers the 5GHZ band? Are you both connecting vie 802.11 a/b/g or n?
The best thing to do is to go into SYSTEM PREFERENCES and select NETWORK, then select AIRPORT and click on the ADVANCED button.
Under the AirPort tab you should delete all the preferred networks and only add back in your network with the proper security settings and passwords.
If you hold down the option key on your keyboard while clicking on the airport icon at the top on your macbook pro. you'll seesome data that will tell you what band and mode you're connecting at, as well as in an indication of signal strength (RSSI) if you write down and post back that information it'll tell us what's going on.
