Dock crashes macbook pro

I have installed Leopard and upgrade twice, once with archive install. When I touch the dock I get odd video and then a crash (freeze). This does not happen in safe boot mode. Where should I start trouble shooting this?

Navigate to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.

  • Crash MacBook Pro 2010

    Hello,
I don't know why my question is not here anymore as I posted this two days ago?
    So again:
    Hello,
history of my MacBook Pro 17 inch from 2010 can be read here Black Screen on MacBook Pro i7
As you see there was always a problem with the graphic card. Nevertheless it worked flawlessly until last week.
I remember that I upgraded to 1Password 4. Since then I had unexpected crashes of Firefox, Finder and at least also the computer shut down without warning.
When I was installing an upgrade for Parallels the MacBook went down, when I tried to restart it: no volume was found!
I started from an extern hard drive copy, which I had made with Carbon Copy Cloner. With DiskWarrior I was able to save the data but not to repair the intern volume. Also Disk Utility could not do that. So I formatted the intern volume and did an clean installation of Mavericks without importing any user content
As I worked now from the extern hard drive, copying the saved data back to the intern drive, the MacBook suddenly crashed again and I even could not start it from the extern drive anymore!
I went to Comspot (Apple Dealer) where they checked the hardware. No problem was found. Strange enough, when they repaired the intern volume with DiskWarrior it was there again! But the extern hard drive could not be repaired with it.
Now I felt really frustrated and alone.  With this hint https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5279792?tstart=0 I was able to save the data from the extern hard drive.
After days of installing a clean Mavericks and installing all Applications manually I am now nearly back again where I was before (did NOT install the 1Password 4, but old version 3)
    BUT:
    - I have unexpected crashes of the Finder
    - sometimes when I click New Start, Finder crashes and a new start will not be done
    - some Applications quit directly when they are started (Winclone 4)
I feel that the whole system is not as stable as before and are frightened.
    Here is the etrecheck:

Have you checked third party software support sites?
Sometimes you can have an updates to 2 3rd party softwares and they suddenly don't play well together.

  • Motion crashes - Macbook Pro Software update and Firmware update

Anyone out there that is working with Motion 3.0.1 on one of the new Macbook Pros (Santa Rosa) and has installed both the Macbook Pro Software Update 1.0 and the EFI Firmware update (for the 15 inch models)???
Motion 3 crashes on the Macbook Pros with the MBP Software update installed (see thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1028746&tstart=45
The solution so far is to wipe the hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch EXCEPT the software update 1.0. However, I'm trying to find out if anyone has installed the Firmware update, which requires the software update to be installed first, and if they are running smoothly.
    ???

I just restarted then tried to open InDesign again and it let me download a java update that seems to have fixed it.

  • Aperture in full screen mode seems to crash MacBook Pro with Retina

    To anyone who has an idea;
I have a brand new (couple months old) 15" MacBook Pro w Retina (16GB RAM, 2.3GHz i7) and I can repeatedly crash it just by running Aperture in a full screen mode and flipping through the photos (I have 21000+ photos and I was cleaning them so it required a lot of flipping back and forth, deleting but no editing). It appears as if it was running out of RAM and not releasing it back. I have all the latest updates installed (always) and I know this is not related to my machine since within the first week of having it I noticed a dent on my screen and Apple sent me a brand new machine. I could replicate this behaviour on both machines.
To mitigate the restarts, I use FreeMemory Pro app set at "freeing" RAM once it drops to 4GB but if I push the Aperture too fast (and I do not mean major editing but just simply going through many photos in full screen mode, viewing them), I still crash it.
I was wondering if there is anyone else with something similar and if you have any tips. I have reported it to Apple.

    Hi,
I'm having exactly the same hard- and software configuration like you, Gordito73 - up to date of course as well. Aperture continues to crash after it really seams to run out of memory while editing lots of photos with many different effects. -.-

  • Connecting thunderbolt HD crashes macbook pro

I have Macbook pro 17" early 2011. running Mavericks 10.9.1.
Every time I connect thunderbolt drive (Lacie 2 TB rugged portable) Computer has kernel panic and crashes.
This corrupts the partition map which I have been only able to repair by a reinstal of OS.
This does not occur on my 11" AIR also running 10.9.1.
After 3 crashes partion map so damaged I cannot reboot & have to reinstal.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Wow I had no idea, what anti virus - malware software do you recommend?
You're running Mavericks so you already have it. OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware, and has for the past several OS X versions. Keep it updated with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Use of discrete graphics causes hard crash - (MacBook Pro 2010 with ML 10.8.2/3)

I have a client with a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro. He was having crashes with Lion so I upgraded him to Mountain Lion 10.8.2. The crashes did not go away.
I troubleshooted and with the help of gfxCardStatus noticed that every time his machine went to use the discrete graphcis he got the gray hard crash screen and system had to restart. Back then I tried a beta of 10.8.3 and it didn't help.
I noticed that if I created another user account (profile) it would not crash when the discrete graphics card was called upon.
So, I re-installed the OS (to 10.8.2), created a new profile and manually migrated pictures, documents, keychain, mail, movies, music and re-installed the relevant Applications. Everything was working fine and my client went on a trip to Europe and soon the crashes began again. Then he upgraded to 10.8.3 and the crashes got even more frequent (it seems 10.8.3 puts more applications on the discrete graphics list so it switches even more).
I am wondering what could have caused the crashes to begin. It was before he upgraded to 10.8.3. Some application or something he was using must have changed a setting or corrupted something to cause the crashing to begin. I haven't done this yet, but I'm sure if I create another user account it won't crash on it.
Any ideas where to turn my attention to see what is causing the shift from his working user account to a crash-causing one?
He has iLife, Office 2011, Final Cut Pro X, iPhoto Library Manager, VLC, Audacity, DropBox, FileMaker Pro 11, Flip4Mac Player, Fuze, GotoAssist, Handbrake, Skype, iSkySoft DVD Creator, iSkySoft Video Convertor, Onyx and Skype.
I know there are *MANY* others having problems with the automatic graphics card switching and it seems some are having more problems when gfxCardStatus is installed?

    is this your MacBook:
TS4088- MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Take a copy of the article with you when you go for service. They need to run a SPECIAL diagnostic to decide whether you have this problem. Do not leave until they run the special diagnostic. The "overnight run" does not detect this problem.
If they confirm you have the problem, they will replace the graphics chip, which is part of the motherboard. be prepared to hand over your Mac for depot repair. (Your backups must be up-to-date).

  • DVI adapter crashes MacBook Pro

    Hello,
I have a MacBook Pro with a DVI output, So I bought a DVI to HDMI adapter just like this one: http://www.sanace.com/IT/images/dvi-hdmi.jpg
Whenever I plug the adapter into my MacBook Pro (with or without any HDMI cable) it crashes by shutting down abruptly after a few seconds.
    I found this thread: http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10743123#10743123
and it seems the be the exact same problem, but there are no answers.
    I have Mac OS X 10.6.3
    Thank you

If your MBP works properly in all other respects, I would certainly suspect a faulty adapter first. Besides, the adapter is a lot cheaper to replace than the MBP.
You have one of the older MB Pros. This forum concerns the newer, unibody models.

  • AMD Radeon HD 6570M crashes (MacBook Pro 2011)

This is a problem I've been having with my new MacBook. Only a month or so after I got it, there is one major problem: The Graphics Card (AMD Radeon HD) crashes. So far, it has only happened while running BootCamp, but I don't want to blame it on windows (yet). Here is exactly what happens (every time):
    1. Screen goes black for a few seconds, gets some lines through it, and then goes back to normal
    2. Pop-up from toolbar says "Graphics card driver for the AMD Radeon HD 6570M has stopped responding and recovered sucessfully."
    3. Nothing happens for a few seconds...
    4. Screen freezes, black lines go through it, then a few seconds lator I get a grey scratched screen with color splotches
    5. Black-bordered blue screen that says "Your computer has shut down to prevent harm" (or something like that)
One thing I've noticed is that it has only happened while playing a certain game, even though this game takes very little graphic processing compared to other stuff I've done on this computer. Of cource the obvious answer is "stop playing that game" but that still leaves a problem, that I would be avoiding.
Note that this does not only happen while connected to a monitor. Also, as said in some other posts, this model of MacBook overheats very easily, and this only happens when it gets VERY hot. Could that be related?
Has this happened to anyone else? Or should I call in for a replacement computer? OR can anyone tell me what to do?
    Thanks!

    Hi Jason,
Sorry you're having a tough time.
For video and rendering playback options, the software option is the only choice. 512GB VRAM on AMD and Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB. This is a late 2011 15" Macbook Pro.
Right. You need 768 MB VRAM for hardware acceleration for the Mercury Playback Engine. In speaking with engineering and researching past posts, your GPU is underpowered and you will probably continue to experience performance issues and unexpected behavior with current versions of Premiere Pro.
It is recommended to roll back to Premiere Pro CC.1 (7.1) and to avoid certain effects listed in this post: Performance crippled by 7.2 update - GPU Acceleration. See the recommendations from QE engineer, Peter Garaway.
It might be time to begin looking at updating your hardware in order to take full advantage of your Creative Cloud subscription. We have an outstanding hardware forum should you need advice on upgrading your computer.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Java install on mavericks crashes MacBook Pro

After installing java to try to fix adobe in design crashing now my MacBook Pro won't start. Gives me grey screen with Apple logo while trying to boot. Then Apple disappears. Help.

wow thanks for the very fast reply! I'll stick with it then and see how it goes. I love the thing though. It's very sexy!! Bit peed that they bumped the 7200rpm drive up to 200GB today but never mind, not fussed by the CPU as it'll only use the battery more and this thing is fast enough!
Will the upgrade convert all the OS into the full 64bit?

  • Installing crashes Macbook Pro Retina

    Hi,
I'm desperatly trying to install PS 6 on my new Macbook Pro Retina.  But the installer always stops at 80% and crashes the computer.  I have to switch it off and on.  Didn't get any error message (well, haven't found any yet ...).
    Any idea or hints?
    Cheers,

  • Final Cut Crashes MacBook Pro

I have repeatedly tried to export a project I just created to a DVD, and each time my 2009 MacBook Pro 17 inch reboots because of a problem that occured.  It also randomly does this when editing videos occasionally as well.  Is anyone else experiencing this same problem with Final Cut?  It is very frusterating to not be able to export my project and put it on a DVD without my laptop crashing.  Let me know if anyone has suggestions they would be greatly appriciated.
    Thanks

It sounds like you have something going on with your system beyond your ability to make a DVD. That could be hardware-related or a software issue.
    Has FCP ever worked reliably?
I'd start by using Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager to trash your preferences.
    Other trouble-shooting steps:
Open Disk Utility and verify disk. Run Repair Permissions.
    Run Apple Hardware Test.
    Good luck.

    Step 1
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
If Numbers crashes in the guest account, go to Step 2. If it doesn't crash, post your results.
    Step 2
Any or all of the following third-party system modifications that you installed could be contributing to the problem:
    DivX
    EyeTV
    PGP
    ToastIt
I suggest you remove them, one at a time, according to the developers' instructions, testing after each one. If you've encrypted the startup volume with PGP, you'll have to decrypt it in order to carry out the test.

  • Chrome crashing MacBook Pro since updating to 10.7.5

Updated my mid-2009 Macbook Pro OS to 10.7.5. Since then, any time I try to use Chrome, it crashes the laptop - the only way to restore is to power off and power back on. How do I fix this? Thanks!

    Thanks....I first  uninstalled/reinstalled Chrome - no luck.
Then restarted in safe mode, installed 10.7.5 update client combo, installed Chrome. Same issues - Chrome freezes, I get the color wheel and then the entire machine locks up. The only way to get out is to power off and power back on.
I've found some other posts about this, but none seem to have a simple solution (I'm not a programmer/tech person). I am guessing there are incompatability issues of some sort since the update. I do wish someone from Apple would pay attention to the posts - they are becoming more frequent and someone should respond.

  • Graphics card crash - MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Snow Leopard

    Hi,
Yesterday I was playing Age of Empires III for Mac, and at the start of a Skirmish mission, where there wasn't much going on yet, the game seized, and then after a while the screen started flickering to black in these big horizontal chunks... I was unable to quit, restart, force quit, nothing.
Pretty much the whole bottom of the screen went black, while a middle part was flashing on and off.
I'm afraid there might be something wrong with my graphics card.
Here's the crash report after I force-shutdown my MBP, and started it again:
Also, the MacBook Pro is only a few months old and there seems to be other problems:
    1. There's dust under the glass of my screen!
    2. When I try to put a CD in, it gets caught on some stuff, and I have to jimmy it around to get it inside
    3. The bottom of the laptop creeks really loud when it's on my lap (which isn't often, but still, worrying and not very Apple-ish noise every time I handle it), the case moves, etc.
What should I do? I've had laptops repaired in the Apple Store a few times before, and they always ended up coming up worse than they went in. New problems, etc.

    Hi
The dust & cd & creaking won't get better, regrettably - so back it would go, for me anyway - unless you really feel it'll be made worse.
Later mbp's have an auto graphic switching setting in System Prefs-Energy Saver - try switching that off -
    assuming the crashes are repeatable.

Since you haven't had good luck at your local Apple Store, maybe you should consider sending your Mac off to the Repair Depot for diagnosis and repair. Call Apple and tell them about all of the troubles you have been having. You might also try running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test--if you get any error codes, that would point to a specific hardware fault.
My niece did this, and the turnaround was really fast. She sent hers off on a Tuesday evening, and got it back the following Thursday morning. From what I hear, the repair depot is really good.
Be sure to make a good backup of your data before sending it in. Sometimes they erase the hard drive and reinstall the OS during the troubleshooting process. If you have replaced the RAM, send it in with the original Apple RAM.
If the problem is intermittent, be sure to include a screen shot and the crash report.
    Good luck!
