Dock settings not always appliying

On several of my network accounts, the dock settings I have set up in MCX aren't applying when the user logs in. I have everything removed on the user (forget exactly why I did this, instead of simply not managing the user, but I was having extra dock items appear such as SysPrefs when I didn't want them sometimes) and then I have both group and computer group settings configured. However, sometimes only the Finder will appear. It's been a while since I've actually seen it, but I get reports of "oh last week none of my dock icons were there..." Why they couldn't tell me THEN, I'll never know. When I have seen it, often logging out and back in corrects it but sometimes it doesn't.
Any clue why they would load inconsistently like this?
XServe running Server 10.6.3, 30-odd iMacs running 10.6.3 (although had the issue with 10.6.2 server/client as well).

THAT WORKED and all is back to normal.
By the way I did not lose any of the icons on my dock either. All the apps light up under the icon and they now mimimize correctly!!
Thank you very much capfred!!!

Try deleting com.apple.dock.plist from the preference folder located in your user Library.
You can open the hidden library in Finder's menubar,  Finder > Go > hold the option key down > select Library.
Edit: you'll have to add back program icons to the dock that you moved there.

  • Dock settings not saved?

Hello. I'm on an OS X Server 1.0.4.11 on a PowerMac G4. I'm logged in as a user in the Administrators group, but my Dock's current settings are not being saved - when I login again, the dock reverts back to the items that I've removed and doesn't have items that I've added. Any suggestions?
    thanks
    David

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Is this just for new settings that won't stick? Or have all your original settings reverted to the defaults? Have you started up from your Mac OS X install disk and used the Disk Utility to "repair disk"? Do you have a backup of your important files?

  • Initial View settings not always working

A user recently reported this problem:
She opens a PDF for the first time through our website by click a link on an HTML page in IE. The PDF opens in a new browser window to the default view and first page, as specified in the initial view settings.
She advances several pages into the file to a page with links.
She clicks one of these links, which takes her to another page in the file.
    She closes the browser window.
She returns to the original web page and clicks the link to the PDF again. The PDF opens to the LAST page viewed -- not the first page as specified in the initial view settings.
I'm seeing the same behavior on my PC. The versions of Acrobat Pro and Reader I have are 8.1.3. I've tried turning on and off the web browser settings in Acrobat and Reader (Allow fast web view and Allow speculative downloading ...), but I'm getting the same results.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Rob Miles

Thanks, Bernd. I forgot to mention in the original post that the "Restore last view settings when reopening documents" option IS disabled (unchecked), both in Acrobat and Reader. The behavior described occurs with this option disabled.

  • "Up to"-Geometry Settings not always honored in Settings

Sometimes when I transcode files for a certain purpose (e. g. making small files viewable on a netbook with slow hardware), I use the "Up To" scaling option in the Geometry settings.
Sometimes the height of the output exceeds the constraint. This has happened both with the "Up to 854x480" and the "Up to 640x360" preset. What's going on here?
In one example, the source material was 720x492, pixel-aspect 1.0, the setting was "Up to 854x480", and Compressor set the output size to 720x492. Padding is set to all 0.
In the other example, the source material was 720x480, CCIR NTSC SD pixel aspect, scaling set to "Up to 640x360", and the output was created as 640x480.
I've filed a bug report with Apple, but no idea if something is being done about it.
I was curious if I could possibly have done something wrong, or if others have had the same experience, as I haven't yet found anything about it in the communities/forums.
    Bernd

Delivery of the 'Up to 20Meg' service has been right on time. However, I am 8 days through my 10 day 'training' prog & so far I am not impressed. I expected to reach about 10Meg with my distance from the exchange but I am a long way off this figure, & I have scorned Virgin repeated target customer advertising why I patiently waited for this upgrade to take place.

  • "Show Photo Settings" not always active window in "Media"

I am trying to change the viewing time of photo clips in my movie. When I click on Media, sometimes the "show Photo settings" tab is active, but sometimes not! very frustrating...any iaeas? I have saved the project, closed imovie, reopened...it's very skittish!

Hello, and welcome to the discussions.
First, close iMovie and reopen it and see if it now works. If not, delete iMovie's preference file. Close iMovie, go to your Home folder (YourUserName)/ Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist Be sure to select the correct one; if you have another version of iMovie the plist file for it might have a number such as iMovie7.
Drag the plist file to the trash. iMovie will create a new fresh one for you when you relaunch it.
Reopen iMovie and see if it works now.
Be sure you have a photo selected when you try to click on 'Show Photo Settings.'
Post back if none of the above resolves the problem.

  • Have imac desktop with OS X.6.8 with three users two screens show dock third does not all dock settings same any suggestions

Have imac desktop OS 10.6.8 with three users. two show dock items, one does not but all dock settings are the same for all three. Any suggestions as to problem solution?

I found the problem. It is in Parallels 6 application. When windows applications folder is shown in dock Parallels uses 100% cpu and somehow effects ability to show dock and it remains hidden. I expect Parallels is working on this problem.  Temporary fix is to not have folder shown, then dock returns to screen.

  • Printer settings menu does not always change when switching printers

I am running OS 10.3.9 and also seen this issue on a 10.4 machine. When switching from one printer to another the printer options drop down menu does not always transfer to the correct menu for the newly selected printer. It stays at the menu for the last used printer. I am using several different Sharp printers as well as some HP models. The applications being used are Office 10 Word and Power Point. If anyone has seen this and has a fix I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks

I don't have a solution but have also noticed that the printer in the menu is sort of like spinning the wheel of fortune.
Hopefully there is a solution but my guess is that it has something to do with a printer preference file that can get hijacked by different printers and applications.
I have noticed that a printer driver when installed will usually appear as the default printer even if it was not selected as such. I have also notice that different applications will do different things with different printers so I hope someone has a solution.

  • Group dock settings in WGM don't take effect

    Hi,
when I change the settings for the dock in a group, users logging in still get what they had before. I set it to always manage this setting.
I've tried both adding it to their dock and not, nothing works. Is there a secret "Apply now" button somewhere?
    Clients and Server are 10.4.6.
    Any hints would be appreciated.
    Torsten
This quote from the manual does not prove true for me: "You can update a computer’s managed preference cache regularly. The computer checks the server for updated preferences according to the schedule you set. The cache is also updated automatically every time a change is made to any of the managed preferences within Workgroup Manager." Rebooting doesn't do the trick either.

Keep in mind that there are Dock settings at the Computer level, at the Group level, and at the individual User level. The system will try to combine them in a reasonable way.
If a setting for each User is managed always, group settings will have little or no effect.

  • DOCK hiding not working in 10/4/9

After upgrading to 10.4.9, my dock will not automatically hide/show with the mouse. I must move the cursor off screen and click for the dock to open. Once open, the image is static and I cannot scroll through the application names as before. I can select an app, then I must click on the desktop to hide the dock.
I have trashed doc.plist and restarted and reloaded system software. No change.
    Any suggestions?

That's the odd thing though. I've done this with 10.4 no problem. Settings always worked. For some reason though, even though the clients are able to login using a network user, none of the preference settings sync.
For example - I always put a loginwindow message on as a sort of "test" to see if preferences are being set. If that works, then I rarely have a problem. No matter what I do, though, I cannot get the loginwindow message to display on the 10.3 clients. It works really well on 10.4, but not at all on 10.3. I've tried this on multiple 10.3 machines, as well, (and they're both based on different system images) but it still doesn't work. When I get back to work on Friday, I'll have to see if preferences will work for network users; that's the one thing I haven't tried.
Other than dumping the directoryaccess preferences, is there another preference setting that could be dumped on the client that may make it grab prefs from the server?

  • Trackpoint in Thinkpad X121e not always working

    Hi,
my Lenovo Thinkpad X121e runs with ArchLinux x86_64 and all packages updated (no testing versions). All worked fine, but since a while i have the problem, that the trackpoint sometimes does not work. This occurs randomly at startup. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. If it works, it keeps working all the time the machine is running. If it is not running, after a reboot it will most likely work. This problem seems to occur randomly at about every tenth start of the machine. I remember that the trackpoint did work without problems in the past, but some update in the last few months has killed it. I currently cannot figure out, why this happens.
I attached the dmesg and lsmod output for the working and non-working state of the trackpoint. If you need more info, please ask. I hope someone can help me :-)
    Thanks.
Edit: Added also the Xorg.0.logs for working and non-working states.

OK, ignore my last post pointing the finger at udev.
I poked around in the kernel code; it was actually kinda fun. Now this looks more like either a hardware problem (unlikely) or a driver bug (more likely) to me:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1894892
Thought I'd pass along what I found.
During a boot, the kernel will "walk" all the buses looking for devices. The methods used to find them on some buses (like PCI) are well defined, while others are not (like the serial bus). On those buses that aren't well defined the kernel will (probably) literally "probe" the bus trying to not only find a device, but also determine the exact chip installed.
It's the second case that's involved in your problem. The serio driver found the Synaptics touchpad device (via probing). If you look closely at the kernel log, you'll see it's attached to your i8042 (PS/2) chip.  But... since this touchpad device has a "passthru port", it has to perform extra steps to determine if there's a chip on the "other side" of that touchpad chip. In your case there is, and it's your Trackpoint.
If it's successful in finding the Trackpoint chip, the drivers/input/mouse/trackpoint.c kernel driver file will put the following in your syslog:
IBM TrackPoint firmware: 0x0e, buttons: 3/3
Which is what you see in your logs when it works. Since you don't see it when it fails, then the code probably isn't being executed or it's failing with an error condition.
Now... when a driver finds a device, it usually (but not always) creates some virtual "files" in the /sys directory... and that's what will happen if that trackpoint.c code is executed...
input: TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint as /devices/platform/i8042/serio4/serio5/input/input11
So... one question is... "Does it create something in /sys when it fails?". From looking at the code, I highly doubt it.
Although this looks somewhat improbable, if the error path for this section of the code in the trackpoint_detect function of /drivers/input/mouse/trackpoint.c file is executed then it looks like it might match your error:
    psmouse->private = kzalloc(sizeof(struct trackpoint_data), GFP_KERNEL);
    if (!psmouse->private)
    return -ENOMEM;
Perhaps you might want to put some sort of printk call in there to see if that's what's happening. Heck, also add one to the top of the function to see if it's even being called.
    Good luck.

  • Why does New Report.vi not always minimize the document?

I’m using Report Generation Toolkit for Microsoft Office to generate documents based on bookmarks in a template document. It works very well and I’m pleased with it. However, it usually (not always) opens up the template document and displays it while inserting the data in the various bookmarks. The process really slows down when this happens. The document is to automatically print to the default printer when the print button is clicked without opening up.
I’m using the New Report.vi with Window State set to Minimized, Report Type to Word and the template document’s path and file name sent to Template. All other settings are default.
After the bookmarks are inserted I use the Print Report, Dispose Report and Simple Error Handler vi’s. There are no errors displayed.
    OS: XP-Pro
    LV: v.7.1
    Report Generation Toolkit: v.1.0.1
Word: Office 2003 (Office 2003 was installed before installing the Report Generation Toolkit.)
    Thanks,

Attached is a sample of the printing vi along with a subvi for support. Also attached is a sample template. This vi is a much simplified version of what I'm using. However, it also opens up the Word template. It opens and closes very quickly, but it should not open at all. In my final program, it really chokes up when the template opens.
I hope you can find something about it.
It's not clear to me what is meant by "WindowState input of no change."
    Thanks,
    Dave J.

  • Pages slow to load or do not load, then time out, sometimes stopping page from loading will reveal it or stopping and refreshing it, though not always.

pages will not always load or take forever, if i stop it from loading and refresh it it may load right away though not always. It is like the old days @ 33K, never used to happen, basically have all the same plugins have always had.
has been doing this for several months now, finally can't take it any more, all malware, virus, scans are clean, settings are the same for last ? years.
do get script problems from time to time but not very often.
loading say New egg, will take forever or will not completely load page, have backed up all bookmarks, etc: removed and reinstalled but no change.
any Ideas would be of great help. I have been using Firefox, since it's inception and don't want to switch browsers.
    Thank You,
    Mark

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Safari 5.1.7 local storage not always clearing upon reset

There are several threads through out this forum regarding cookies being accepted regardless of settings, but much of those seem to be fixed by one of the recent security updates (seperate from an actual Safari update), including fixed for me. But, have noticed that "local storage" items do not always clear out upon a reset of safari (all boxes checked). In fact, sometimes, it takes two or three resets to completely clear them out.  I have verified this behavior on several mac's running SL each yeilding the same.  I just wondered if anyone else has seen this, or has found a solution (or if this is expected behavoiur). Does this indicate a security threat within the browser?  I have used the feedback to Apple to report this.
I did find this explanation, however:
    https://developer.apple.com/library/safari/#documentation/iphone/conceptual/safa rijsdatabaseguide/Name-ValueStorage/Name-ValueStorage.html

    BDAqua,
Nope. It's very erratic. For example, just now I cycled several times between the inbox and the smart mailbox and even closed and re-opened. The inbox showed messages. Then I quit mail and re-opened, the inbox was empty. It took a couple more cycles of quit and re-open to get an inbox display. But as soon as I got it back on, and then closed or changed mailboxes, it disappeared when I went back to the inbox.
Hellofa way to run a railroad.
And just for reference, when I first had this issue last week under 10.6.8, I read several posts on this forum wherein other users had problems with the inbox display. Other than the smart mailbox "fix", I never did find a definitive solution or explanation as to why it is occuring.
