Does 2+ monitors cause a significant performance decrease?

Howdy.
I was thinking about getting a second and larger 27" monitor to use primarily for working, while bumping my current 20" to the side and using it to watch movies while I work (which is what I currently do but it kind of hogs up a bit of my work area as I have dvd player in the corner of the screen).
I was just curious as to how much of a performance impact you will get when running a second and larger monitor. On my 20" I typically get around 11-15 fps doing 3d work, so with another monitor being used for video playback will I get a bad performance hit?
My current card is a 7300GT with a first gen Mac Pro.
Thanks for your time.

Thanks for your reply.
It's a Dell 2707WFP so I'm sure it would work just fine, as I have a 2007WFP right now.
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Monitors/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=e n&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=222-7315
All I would be doing really if I got the new monitor would be using the large one for work and using the smaller one purely for video watching. At night I would use the large one for watching movies when relaxing.
I'm definately hoping that the 8800 GTs (or better) will be available for Mac Pro's v1 but in the meantime I would think that a single 7300 would do the job. As you said it should run a 30" and a 20".
Thank you for your help.

  • JDev10g: General performance decrease with JClients like Oracle BC Browser

    Hi,
I'm observing a significant performance decrease of JClient applications (homegrown and Oracle Business Components Browser)in JDev10g compared against JDev9i (9033)?
    Can anyone confirm my observation?
Just create a default Dept-Emp business components package and start the Business components browser. Scroll to some data (it takes some time...) and resize the window (takes even more time)!
My guess: JDev9i-style data binding for JClients is simulated in JDev10g with ADF-Data-Binding?? My own application is a simple "recompile"-migration of a JDev9i project with JDev10g. Does this apply to Oracle Business Components Browser too?
My own application runs still faster with JDev9i!
What is the problem? Any hints are welcome!
    Thanks,
    Markus

    Excellent Blog. Thank You
Small clarification on Step **6) Oracle Home Directory, ...a) Resize the Root Partition**
Ubuntu 11.10 has Gparted available as a Ubuntu software download, DONT use that while trying the above step, instead download the ISO file from http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted/files/gparted-live-stable/ gparted-live-0.12.0-5.iso (124.6 MB)
Burn that ISO file on a Blank DVD, reboot the Ubuntu , during startup select Boot from DVD Option if not already selected. this will take to Boot Menu Options of Gparted Live then select the first menu option, and this allows to do further action such as Re-sizing .
and once you have chosen and executed step a) . do NOT run step b) also that is "Setup External Storage"
I hope this minor clarification can avoid some confusion

  • Severe Samba performance decrease after u6 - u7 upgrade

I just upgraded my Solaris 10 x86 system from u6 (kernel 138889-08) to u7 using LiveUpgrade. I have samba sharing some ZFS filesystems, and the first thing I noticed after the upgrade was a severe performance decrease in reading files via smb.
For example, using smbget from a MacOS client to retrieve a particular test file, pre-upgrade I was getting about 30Mb/sec, but after the upgrade to u7 I'm only getting 100Kb/sec. If I boot back to my alternate boot environment that still has u6, performance returns to normal. This happened when u7 was first released, so I just ignored it and went back to u6, and now I tried u7 again yesterday and applied all of the current security and most recommended patches (including the latest samba patch) and am still experiencing the same behavior.
I don't currently have any socket options or other performance tuning in my smb.conf, it is about as simple as possible with just a couple share definitions.
Any ideas why the upgrade would cause such problems for samba? The only troubleshooting I can think to check is that the network card (e1000g) isn't getting errors all of a sudden after the upgrade, but netstat -i shows everything is working as expected; 0 errors/collisions/etc.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Matthew

  • Does OS X throttle hard disk performance on the boot drive?

Does OS X throttle hard disk performance on the boot drive?
I was upgrading my boot drive on a Mac Pro (1,1) from the original Seagate 7200.9 250gb drive to a new Western Digital Caviar Black model 1tb drive.
What surprised me was that disk benchmarking tools (both AJ System Test and Xbench) showed that the new drive had a 30% decrease in speed tests (primarily writes) when actually serving as the boot drive. Put back in the original drive, and while not as extreme as the new drive, it also shows slower write speeds while serving as the boot drive vs serving as an extra internal drive.
In Xbench, the writes are both sequential and random unchached writes, AJ System test is less descriptive, but the write speeds on the new drive are painfully slow to watch.
Hardware-wise, I'd think this new WD
Is there something in the OS that impacts this? Is it something that can be tuned or tweaked? I feel like I'm not getting the most bang for my buck on the new drive (or the old for that matter).
That said, the new drive reads more than twice as fast as the old, and I can feel the difference significantly on boot up (login screen appears faster) and all my startup items load up much faster after logging in.

    R C-R wrote:
Keep in mind that benchmarks don't really mean much unless test conditions are the same for each test. Benchmark each drive used as the boot drive & you get a relative comparison of their performance as a boot drive.
Which was really all I was after in the first place, and more as a curiosity than anything else, but it was just too unreal to see the drive lose half its read/write speed just because it was the boot drive. I'd expect, and accept, some relative drop in performance, but there seems like there was something wrong.
My problem gets stranger at this point. I was about to give up on using this drive, it was actually painfully slow to use and I'd gone back to my original drive. I thought I'd give it one more chance as part of some external drive enclosure stuff I was doing.
I put the drive back in Bay 1 on my Mac Pro, and it took forever to boot up, and when I ran benchmarks on it, they were only 5-10% of what I'd seen as a scratch drive, yes, that's 5% total. I actually got a score of 5.04 on Xbench. As a scratch drive, the thing gets in the 90's, and as boot drive it was getting 40s to 50s.
Anyways, after avoiding temptation to throw the thing against the wall, I tried putting it into an eSATA external dock, and booted from it. I am typing this from that boot session right now. The system booted up lightening fast, and benchmarks in Xbench are comparable to when it's a scratch drive, and AJA System Test just showed read/write speeds of 98 MB/s. This is what I would expect.
So now my issue appears to be that my Mac Pro, for some reason, is throttling, make that strangling, this particular hard drive when it is placed in Bay 1 and used as a boot drive. Some kind of hardware issue on the internal SATA bus? Incompatibility with this drive and Mac Pros? It's gonna take some more research or testing I guess.
Very frustrating. Reminiscent of my days with Beige Boxes running WindowsXP; certainly not the "it just works" experience I've grown to love since switching a few years ago.
I'll post back when I find out more.
Thanks again for the followup, and interestingly, I didn't get an email notification of an update to the thread. Odd.

  • Performance decrease due to build options

I am trying to use the performance monitor remote tool to mainly view the process processor time for multiple processes on my WEC7 device with a native application code, however, the OS build with the required build options shows a significant decrease in
performance to the point where it eventually crashes. Is there a work around for this performance decrease due to build options?
I asked in the native application development section but received 1 response which was only a question to
    my question.
    Thanks,

    Hi Jaydeep,
You create one J2ee library project. In this project include all required external jars. Build it and deploy on the server.
Now, these jars are available on server. So, just make a reference to this library project in your webdynpro application.
To accomplish this, goto webdynpro application's property. These select webdynpro references-> Library references.
Here add the refernce as following:
    <Application provider>/<Library project name>
By default application provider name is sap.com.

  • Clips from Project bin to source monitor causing video output to go out of sync(CS6 and CC)

Any footage I double-click or drag from the Project window to the Source monitor causes my video output to go out of sync. When I put the clips in the timeline, video goes back in sync and I'm able to view video output.  My monitors are connected to a Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt(9.7.5) via component and HDMI. Is this normal behavior in Premiere or is there a setting to enable this? No issues doing this in FCP7(clips from Project window to Canvas).
Can someone with an I/O from AJA, Matrox, or Blackmagic please test this out for me. Thanks...

    Hi Joe,
How do you have your audio setup? Try the following.
    - Set your OS system sound to Built-in or Line out audio
    - Select Blackmagic for both Video and Audio in Preferences> Playback
    - Select System Default Input/Output from Preferences> Audio Hardware

  • Significant performance change in spatial join

    Hi,
I have 2 spatial tables in Oracle 10g: one (PT_SOURCE) has a point column with over a half million records and another (TRJ_TMP_BUF) has a polygon column with 2 records. 2 spatial R-tree indexes were built on the 2 table respectively. I tried a spatial join to see how many points fall into one polygon. The SQL statement is:
    SELECT a.id, d.name FROM pt_source a, trj_tmp_buf b, TABLE (SDO_JOIN('PT_SOURCE', 'SHAPE', 'TRJ_TMP_BUF', 'SHAPE', 'mask=ANYINTERACT')) c, pollution_source d WHERE c.rowid1 = a.rowid AND c.rowid2 = b.rowid and d.id=a.id
The first a couple of run of the query took about 2 and a half hours to complete. 2 days after I tried the same query again. It only took about 2 minutes to complete! I'm pretty sure that the workload of the server was in the same level as in the first run. I'm wondering if there is something going on with the spatial indexes that may cause such significant improvement.
BTW, I imported the same data set into another server that is configured similarly and runs another instance of Oracle 10g. All the spatial indexes were built. This time the same query took about 2 hours to complete. Does any body have any explanation about this? Thanks in advance.

    Hi, Dan,
I'm sorry that I made a mistake in the file names. The second trace file is for the database that is faster.
I set a less file size for the second trace file. That might be why its space was limited. I ran the query again and set the file size to 5 MB (the same as for the first trace file). The newly generated trace file for the faster database is as following:

  • Why Does 3D Reposse cause crashes and work so slow?

Why Does 3D Reposse cause crashes and work so slow?   I get the pinwheel of death when I use this feature.  It works at a snails pace.  I liked the 3D Type effects in iIllustrator.  Why couldn't Adobe have added all the Reposse features to Illustrator instead of craming all these new features into Photoshop?
They're worthless if the program needs an hour to process every selection.

What are your OS specs, your Video Card and your Preferences > Performance settings?
Why Does 3D Reposse cause crashes and work so slow?
My guess would be because it has to create a whole bunch of polygons and your computer-set-up may be insufficient for the task.

  • Does Adobe offer an app to perform a batch conversion from Canon CR.2 raw files to TIFF files?

Apply Adobe Photoshop to astrophotography requires numerous images to be converted from a raw CR.2 file to TIFF files. Does Adobe offer an app to perform a batch conversion from Canon CR.2 raw files to TIFF files?
    Thanks.

Note the option to open the first file and apply settings.
Personally, I'd be nervous of batch processing RAW files because they can need significantly different treatments file to file, but it is doable.  I would assume that Image Processor would allow the XML sidecar files, so you would have the option of looking through and fine tuning any files that were not up to scratch.
You do not need to use that option.   There are two other options.   If the RAW file has never been process by ACR then ACR would use your defaults for the cameras used no ACR dialog UI will display.  If the RAW file has been process by ACR there are ACR settings either in you ACR database or in your RAW files sidecar files in the same folder as the raw file these will be used.
I will often use the Bridge to process groups of RAW image files that look like they have similar exposures looking at the thumbnails the bridge displays.  ACR will open for the group of RAW files.  I will process one RAW file and sync the settings to the other image in the group.   I may also  make other ACR setting for some in the group like crops or spot healing for dust that may be in some sykes  because my sensor needed cleaning. When I'm done all I do is click on the DONE button in ACR so it will save out ACR setting for all the raw files in the group.  No image files are saved.   When I use the image processor script I never use the open first RAW option and the Automate Image Processor Pro plug-in script does not have that option open first RAW  in ACR and use the setting set for all other RAW files..

  • How to monitor a VIP's performance?

Could I get any advice regards how to get the statistics of a VIP performed and how to monitor it?
    Any comments will be appreciation.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Gilles,
How much is too much? :-)
We are monitoring parameters like flows/second and active local connections but I have been looking at parameters telling us how far we can go before seeing performance decrease.
We are terminating SSL on the CSS and if about 800 SSL sessions per seconds per SSL module is the limit, what would be a good parameter to watch?
I couldn't find anything in the MIBS that tell us how many SSL sessions/sec are served.
Any help would be greatly appreciated :-)
    Thanks,

  • Dual Monitor Causing System Problems?

Hi, I'm new to this site, so I hope this is where I ask this question! My design group switched to G5/Cinema Display screen from old g4 setups mid 2005. I retained my Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2020u monitor to use as a secondary display for pallettes, extra files, etc. It's hooked up using a dvi-vga adapter.
My new G5 had hiccups from the start, but around March 2006 I started getting Kernel Panics almost every week, serious slow-downs, Adobe app crashes, etc. It got to the point that I was troubleshooting every week, but could never put a finger on exactly what was happening. IT archive-installed 10.4.4 after we discovered the system had been updated to 10.4.6 and we thought that would solve the problem. While that solved the issues that were relevant to 10.4.6 glitches, it didn't fix everything and little, persistent problems remained, including stalls, crashes and kernel panics. After removing suspect fonts, wallpaper, icons, updating software, repairing permissions, tossing preferences, and other troubleshooting over and over, we (I.T.) finally switched my cpu to another one in the department using data migration (just my user information, not software or other files). Still the same hiccups and even new glitches appeared (InDesign crashing on spellcheck, Photoshop not granting me access to save changes to files, etc.), including two more Kernel panics (within 5 minutes of each other) in the two weeks since we switched hardware. More troubleshooting fixed the app-specific problems, but there are still the persistent annoyances occurring.
I again did all the troubleshooting mentioned above and finally someone mentioned that I'm the only designer in our group using a dual display set-up. Could there be validity to the non-cinema display monitor causing these problems and if so, what is the solution? I've disconnected the second monitor for now, but would love to have it back. Also, we work with a server (for instance, the kernel panics only happen when I try to place a file from the server into InDesign CS2 using the place command, so there's another avenue to go down if the monitor isn't the issue.)Thanks!

I only just disconnected the monitor, so it will take time to tell if that's a factor. As for the kernel panics, although it's always the same scenario (placing images from server through InDesign) they happen very randomly; it's not happening every single time I place a file. In fact, I just placed an image on the server into an ID doc I have on my desktop, no problem. So I can't say for sure that it has happened when working from my desktop or only when working on the server.

  • Monitor and record server performance

    Hi all.
This is not really Arch related but a general question. I have a web server that has services crashing. I think it may be due to low mem. Is there any software or some method that would allow me to monitor/log server stats/performance and then see a graph over time.
My hope is to be able to see if services fail due to mem outages, or some other reason. I would also like to know better what my peak times are.
    Any suggestions are greatly welcome.
    Thanks alls for your input
    Cheers,
    P.

What is the best way to uninstall and reinstall the Focusrite MIDI interface driver. And to uninstall and reinstall the Subtlesoft Midipipe (which is required to get the correct mapping for a Yamaha drumkit)? This was done for me at the Apple Store One On One session in a prior attempt to fix this problem but obviously it did not work. I'd like to try it one more time with the drumkit connected. I did see a screen at one point which allowed me to select the inputs from the Focusrite but I could never find it again. I don't think it was a Garageband menu but somewhere else, maybe during the driver or software install for the Focusrite. I would love to get back to that screen again and take a hard look at it.

  • Performance Decrease with ComboBoxes

Memory consumption and bad performance decrease when closing and reopening panels containing ComboBoxes.
    Context:
    - Running localMode
    - Jdev 9.0.3.1 DE
    - Business Component Version 9.0.3.10.62
    - jdk 1.3.1_02
Panel (within an JInternal frame) with some JUComboBoxes with LOV-Binding to ViewObjects, only with a few entries (2-20)
We observed, that the count of JUIteratorBindings encreases with every new Panel (re)open.
After closing the Internal Frame (including the Panel) the IteratorBindings of all ComboBoxes keep alive and a set of new ones are added to the PanelBinding when opening the (same) Panel once more.
    Is it a bug?
Have one to remove the IteratorBindings explicitly?
Is there any configuration possibility, that the IteratorBindings die with the Panel?
    Has anyone the same problem?
    Roswitha Stepputtis

Yes, we experience similar problems. My suggestion would be to simply hide (setVisible(false)) your internal frames and reuse them when you open them again.
So, instead of dynamically re-creating your JInternalFrame instances, you keep a reference to them once they are created and reuse them each time they should be made visible. I think this will make your application more efficient as a whole.

    Hi,
Please check the memory available in your system.
Also please try the following -
    - Open your Captivate project which you wish to publish
    - Go to menu item Edit > Preferences
    - In the Preferences dialog, go to Project > SWF Size and Quality
    - Uncheck the checkbox Advanced project compression
