  • Can't succesfully install Oracle Database 10g Express Edition on Ubuntu

    Hi,
I've been trying to install Oracle Database 10g xe on Ubuntu 10.04 and when I execute the .deb package (oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.0_i386.deb) I get a quick installation that doesn't ask me for any configuration settings. When the installation is finished I don't get any menu in my Applications menu named "Oracle Database 10g Express Edition" as specified in Getting Started Guide (I only get some items grouped into an category called "Other" (Backup Database, Get Started, Get Started With Oracle Database 10g Express Edition, Go To Online Forum, Read Documentation, Read Online Help, Register For Online Forum, Restore Database, Run SQL Command Line, Start Database and Stop Database). As a consequence I can't access the Oracle Database Home Page.
In addition when I click on Start Database I get the following message: "Operation failed. josep is not member of 'dba' group".
I've tried to re-download the packages and to configure it by editing /etc/init.d/oracle-xe but this doesn't solve my problem.
can you give me some help?
    Thabk you in advance!

  • Can Oracle Database 10g and Oracle Database 10g Express Edition co-exist ?

I just installed Oracle Database 10g Express Edition. But I also want to access isql*plus for study purposes.
Can I download/install Oracle Database 10g without removing Oracle Database 10g Express Edition ?

I decided to download and install Oracle 10g myself and it was pretty quick to install. So I answered my own question : Oracle 10g Express is definitely able to co-exist with Oracle 10g no problem.
I want to post/share this answer for others who started with Oracle 10g express first - the journey I started.
The url isql*plus is displayed near the end of the installation together with the enterprise manager url. Pretty cool.
Now I can learn both Oracle 10g enterprise edition and Oracle 10g Express which is based on apex engine.

  • Running Forms on oracle Application 10g(9.0.4) on terminal Server

oracle application Server Installation guide for windows states that
Oracle Application Server is not supported on Windows operating systems that
include Terminal Services (for example, Windows NT Terminal Server Edition and
Windows 2000 with Terminal Services are not supported).
My Remarks : It means Oracle Application server cannot be installed on the Windows server on which Windows Terminal Services are on.
Please consider the following deployment scenario
    Server 1
    OS : Windows 2000
Software Installed : Oracle Database 10g
    Server 2
    OS : Windows 2000
Software Installed : Oracle Application Server 10g(9.0.4) on which Forms and Reports are deployed
    Server 3
OS : Windows 2000 as Terminal Server
Software Installed : IE 6.0 , that will act as Client Machine.
    I have following Queries
    1. Oracle does not allow OAS installed on Terminal Server, will it allow Terminal Server( Server 3) to act as Client and to run web base forms and reports on it.
    2.
In case It allow to run forms and reports on Terminal Server ( Server 3) does it means thin client machines connected to Terminal Sever can access Forms and Reports.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Ankur Diwan

The bottom line is that we don't certify running Forms using the features of a terminal server to serve up any part of those Forms. That doesn't mean it does not work, but its not certified or supported.

  • Running Oracle database 10g and 11g on same 5 RAC nodes

    Hello Gurus,
Could any body throw light if I can install and sucessfully run Oracle database 10g and 11g on the same Oracle RAC installation setup. My setup is below
    Number of nodes-5
    OS- windows 2003 or RHEL5
    storage- DELL EMC SAN
    Clusterware- oracle version11g
    File system-Automatic storage management(ASM)
After I successfully setup clusterware,ASM on the nodes,I would want to install 11g database on all 5 nodes .
Then Install 10g database on only 3 of the nodes using the same clusterware.
What are your views on the same.
Also FYI... as per metalink node 220970.1(RAC: Frequently Asked Questions) one can do such a setup.
what iam looking for is practical experience if anyone has implemented this in production system,if yes any issues faced and how tough it is to support.
    Thanks,
    Imtiyaz

You could run an 11g database and 10g database on the same cluster as long as you use Clusterware 11g.
The administration aspect will drastically change according to the platform you run on. As of now, it appears you don't know whether it will be Linux or Windows.
It would be practical to support the same database release.

  • Can you access non-Oracle database with HTML DB?

Can you access non-Oracle database with HTML DB? If not, will this be possible in the future?
I realize HTML DB is not an open-source product. However, it is necessary sometimes to get non-Oracle database info. JDeveloper supports this. It does not appear to me that HTML DB does. This is a major drawback to it being a product for more potential applications that rely on other database technology such as MySQL, etc.
If it is possible, is this brain surgery to do it. HTML DB offers fast simplified development and it would be good if it was built in. Does anyone know of an example of accessing non-Oracle database that is available?

    12282,
In general, HTML DB gives you access to Oracle database facilities. These include heterogeneous services. Please search this forum for keyword "heterogeneous" and you can follow the threads that interest you.
As for the comparison with brain surgery, I'd rank them about the same in terms of raw thrill.

  • Does Oracle OLAP comes with Oracle Database 10g ?

1.Does Oracle OLAP comes with Oracle Database 10g or do we need seperate software to have this ?.
2.If I create a Cube with Analytic work space manager the cube is going to be stored in the Database ( meaning the in the table space where OLAP is Stored).
    3. What is the difference between Analtyic work space manager and discoverer For Olap.
    Help is higly appreciated ..
    Thanks, Prasad

One thing to point out : The OLAP option is a costed database option, so while this is automatically installed and part of your database you do have to purchase additional licenses to use this feature. You will need to check with your Oracle account manager to see if you are actually licensed to use this feature.
If you have existing 9i OLAP cubes these can be quickly and easily migrated to 10g OLAP and the documentation explains how to do this. However, there are many new features that are part of 10g OLAP that will improve the performance of your data model that will not be enabled as part of a migration process. Based on my experiences it would be quicker and easier (depending on the size of your existing 9i OLAP cubes) to consider rebuilding your data model using these new 10g features. You should be able to export all the dimensions to XML templates from 9i OLAP and import the templates into the 10g schema and reload your dimensions.
For the cubes you will probably want to consider using partitioning, composites and compression to provide maximum flexibility and performance for your new data model. There is more information on these features within the OLAP documentation and in the many whitepapers and presentations on the OLAP home page on OTN.
For moving data from SQL Server to 10g OLAP much depends on the nature of the data transfer. If it is a one-off bulk data load then you could consider using the normal MS command line tools to dump the data out and transfer it to Oracle. Alternatively, you could consider using Oracle Data Integrator to manage the extraction of the SQL Server data and the data load process into Oracle 10g relational tables. If you decide to use Data Integrator this will require additional licenses.
If you can extract the data from SQL Server to flat files you can use Oracle Warehouse Builder (basic ETL is free as part of the 10g database license) to load that flat file data via external tables. Warehouse Builder can also be used to define your OLAP data model (think of Warehouse Builder as a more powerful version of Analytic Workspace Manager) and provides tools to load the data directly into your OLAP dimensions and cubes. You can get more information on managing OLAP data models with Warehouse Builder the Warehouse Builder home page on OTN.
There are no facilities to modify Discoverer Viewer to add customisations. You can add company logos, modify certain colors and/or hide certain features but it is not possible to add additional features. You may want to consider using BI Beans to provide this type of environment. BI Beans is the development framework used to create Discoverer Viewer. You can create customised JSP pages that look identical to Discoverer Viewer pages with the added benefit of providing your own specific features. You can get more information on the BI Beans home page on OTN.

How to install Oracle software remotely?
Remote Software Installation Steps: (For Solaris only)
If you want to install Oracle Software remotely, you should perform the following steps. These steps are applicable only if your source and target machine are running Unix.
For example, you can install Oracle Software from your home from Washington, DC to a target source in California.
    1. Pick your source server or machine for remote installation.
    2. Check that your CD is in your source CD-ROM drive.
    3. On the target machine, find your target machine name with the output of the /usr/bin/hostname
    4. On the source machine, login as a user.
    5. On the source machine, enable client access: % /usr/openwin/bin/xhost + target-machine-name
    6. Become root user by typing: su (don’t use -)
    7. Check that Volume Manger is running. # ps –ef |grep vold (if you see an entry that contains /usr/sbin/vold, Volume Manager is running. Then skip to Step 10.
    8. If not then do the following: # mkdir –p /cdrom/your-cd-file-name
    9. # mount –F hsfs –r cdrom-device /cdrom/your-cd-file-name
    10. Add the following line to your /etc/dfs/dfstab file: # share –F nfs –o ro /cdrom/your-cd-file-name
    11. Verify whether your source machine is an NFS server: # ps –ef | grep nfsd
    12. If you see an entry that contains /use/lib/nfs/nfsd –a 16, then nfsd is running and skip to Step 16.
    13. If nfsd is running, then type: # /usr/sbin/shareall
    14. If nfsd is not running, then start nfsd by typing: # /etc/init.d/nfs.server start
    15. Verify whether your source machine is an NFS server again by typing: # ps –ef | grep nfsd
    16. Make sure your source machine is exporting your product directory by typing: # /usr/sbin/dfshares
    17. Now, log in to the target machine by type: # rlogin target-machine-name –l user (not root)
    18. Then log in as the root user by typing: # su
    19. Go to the source machine by typing: # cd /net/source-machine/cdrom/your-cd-file-name ,then Skip to 24.
    20. If you cannot change to that directory in Step 19 and you do not have an auto-mounter on your network, then create amount point by typing the following commands.
    21. # mkdir /remote_products
    22. # /usr/sbin/mount –F nfs –r source-machine:/cdrom/your-cd-file-name /remote_products
    23. # cd /remote_products
    24. Redirect the target machine display to source machine by typing: # DISPLAY=source-machine:0; export DISPLAY (if you use a Bourne or Korn shell).
    25. Start the Web Start Installer by typing: # ./installer (or whatever the installer name program is).

  • How can I enable trace log in Oracle Database 10g ( in RedHat Linux)

    Dear Forums Members,
Could u plz drop a message about how can I enable $Oracle_Home/network/trace
in Oracle Database 10g (Operating system is RedHat Linux Advanced Server 3).
I will very greatful if someone reply my message.
    Thanks
    Aungshu

To enable Tracing for a session Level.
    ALTER SESSION SET TRACEFILE_IDENTIFIER = 'my_trace_id';
Enable the SQL Trace facility for the session by using one of the following:
    SQL> Exec DBMS_SESSION.SET_SQL_TRACE
    or
    SQL> ALTER SESSION SET SQL_TRACE = TRUE;
To disable the SQL Trace facility for the session, enter:
    ALTER SESSION SET SQL_TRACE = FALSE;
To enable Tracing for a database level.
Edit init parameter SQL_TRACE = TRUE.
Its not recomended because running the SQL Trace facility increases system overhead, enable it only when tuning SQL statements, and disable it when you are finished

  • Running Oracle Database 10g  Release 2 on computer with Vista Home Premium

Do you think I need all 3 of these downloads to sun Oracle on my computer at home? I have Windows Vista Home Premium.running on my personal computer at home
Oracle Database 10g Companion CD Release 2 (10.2.0.3)
    - 10203_companion_vista.zip (677,074,714 bytes)
    - Download latest Oracle Application Express (formerly HTML DB)
    Oracle Database 10g Client Release 2 (10.2.0.3)
    - 10203_client_vista.zip (616,067,114 bytes)
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/htdocs/10203vista.html

Windows Vista Home is not a supported platform. In this specific case it means you can install it and it will partially work. You will have your database up and running, but the Enterprise Manager will behave funny, and it will show several errors when you attempt to launch tasks such as backup, exp/imp, sqlldr, and all other tasks that require connection to the OS (tasks which require the connect as batch privilege). So you may get fun for a while, but if you are thinking about exploiting more EM features, then I suggest you to install a Virtual Machine and install either a supported windows on it or install Oracle Enterprise Linux and install the Oracle 10gR2 for linux.

I figure out you are trying to install 10gR2 on top of an existing 9iR2 Oracle Home. This is corrected at the Path definition window. Most probably you just click on the <Next> and by default the 9iR2 Oracle Home was selected. You must define a new oracle home for the 10gR2 install.

  • Can we create new tablespace in Oracle Database 10g Express Edition?

    Hi,
Can we create new tablespace in Oracle Database 10g Express Edition instead of using the default "users" tablespace provided?
    Please advise.
    Thank you.

Correct. The sum of all user tablespaces is not allowed to exceed 4 GIG.
You could try shrinking your tablespaces. Theres a script called maxshrink on http://asktom.oracle.com which is useful for this.
    You could compress your tables.
If you are storing lobs, you could consider storing them as bfiles.
Or upgrade to Oracle Standard Edition 1. Its not that expensive.
