Does Front Row DVD player have any options and preferences?

Are there any preference options for watching DVD's in Front Row?
I have been watching DVD's on my Mac through the DVD Player which has lots of useful options like Zoom and De-Interlace etc. But DVD player leaves the mouse pointer on screen and Front Row seems to be a better way to watch films.
My problem with Front Row is when I play a DVD like West Wing it needs to be zoomed to fill my 17inch screen and it needs to be played De-Interlaced. I can't find any way to access options in Front Row DVD player to do this. With no mouse pointer I can't get a drop down menu so is there a short cut key that would give me some options?
Thanks

Welcome to the forums!
But DVD player leaves the mouse pointer on screen
Not if you drag it to the bottom of the screen.
Front Row seems to be a better way to watch films.
Debatable for the reasons you mention!
I much prefer VLC to DVD Player:
You should definitely consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

  • How do I keep the screen from dimming in Front Row DVD Player

Nothing against the standard DVD Player program, but when I'm using the remote Front Row has more functionality. When I use it plugged in, there is no problem, but on battery power the screen auto-dims like normal and then brightens again and dims again...on and on. It proves to be very distracting.
Is there any way anybody knows to keep the screen from dimming like that while im in front row DVD player?
    Newmac

Go to System Preferences > Energy Saver and change the time for screen dim in your prefs for battery operation. You can always change the setting back to the existing setting later, if you like.

  • Front Row DVD Player settings

I would like to have the front row dvd player use the settings from my Apple DVD Player but it seems the current version of front row does not use those settings. On my TV, a 1080p sony display, the image quality is highly depended on these settings.
On previous versions of Front Row, this was not the case. There is no Apple documentation that I was able to find outlining why this limitation is in place nor any workarounds. I was also not able to find a way to downgrade to the previous version to restore functionality either.

You can't view cover art with the DVD Player. You never specified that you're using Video_TS folders, how could we have anticipated that? Maybe you should have provided that information up front. You will need a mouse. If you don't have a mouse and a keyboard and Front Row is not the solution for you, maybe the Mac mini is not the right option for your media needs? Perhaps you could turn on sharing via VNC and remote control your Mac mini from one of your other "many" Macs? There probably are solutions/options available to you, but if we don't understand the original situation, we're not going to be able to provide you with solutions.

  • 10.5.3 and Front Row DVD player crashes

I have been using Front Row with 10.5.2 to play DVDs - seamless experience
Upgraded to 10.5.3 and have been getting regular crash out of front row to home page.
    Is this a known issue?

    Rasterblaster wrote:
Start frontrow GUI using the iMAC remote 'menu' button.
Select DVD and play via the Frontrow GUI using remote only to pass through menu
    Symptom seen:
In the middle of DVD playback MPEG codec glitch (i.e. blocks formed when b or p frames not propertly decode), on other occasions playback stops, image changes to the desktop (what ever it is called in mac speak) then after about 1/2 secs the playback resumes.
Yesterday spotted after I finished watching the standard leopard DVD player icon was left on the screen with an error code (sorry I didn't note the code).
This has happened with a couple of DVDs from the same box set (disk is clean/not scratched). The issue didn't happen with 10.5.2 (but different box set). So I don't know if Apple played with the DVD player in 10.5.3 or its integration with frontrow?
All the readme for 10.5.3 says about video is
''Addresses an issue with stuttering video and audio playback in certain USB devices"
This is not directly related but you never know?
Did you do the usual HD and permissions repair before and after upgrading?

  • Why does front row not have simple organization?

I currently have a hard drive hooked into my macmini which is hooked up to my TV. On my hard drive I have over 1000 movies, all purchased through iTunes. However when I use front row and i goto the movie section, I have to scroll through every movie to get to the one I want. There's no way to scroll by letter, only one by one. This is horrible and takes forever. Can apple do an update that makes the right button on the apple remote for scrolling letter by letter. For example, you click the right button to goto movies starting with B, C, D, E, F, etc. Then the down button for one by one scrolling. Also, why does front row not have genres? AppleTV does. Why not incorporate that into front row? Think, Apple, Think.

You can have sub-folders in the Movies folder and arrange your movies alphabetically that way.
But if you want to alert Apple to your idea, then use this link:

  • Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap). Any ideas?

Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap and doesn't provide any kind of professional DVD authoring). Any ideas?

This comes up a lot these days.
Practically speaking, there are really four options for the Mac platform: Toast (<$100),  Adobe Premier Productiom ($1,600 to buy or $50/month to rent),  find a copy of Final Cut Studio from 3rd  party (+/- $1,000 new) or a boxed edition of iLife to get iDVD ($50 - $90 on Amazon new).
The other question everyone has is how many OS versions before iDVD or FCS breaks? No one knows, but Apple has said they're no longer supporting these legacy apps. Of course, no one is mandated to upgrade to a new OS unless they buy a new computer. So if it works on a system, stay with it as long as it makes sense.
    Good luck.

  • Front Row - DVD - Widescreen

    Hi All,
I just bought a new Mac Mini (Intel Core Duo) and i am having trouble getting widescreen movies to play in widescreen in Front Row.
I have managed (using the Video Zoom function) to get them to play in DVD Player, but even though I have saved the settings (they play in Widescreen in DVD Player everytime now, without any adjustment) my DVD's still wont play in widescreen in Front Row.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    All software patched and updated.
    Thanks
    Matt

Hi, this feature was kinda avail before i upgraded front row to the current version. If you put a dvd in, then go to dvd player, select the zoom you want, THEN go to front row, the zoom is effective (ie now with teh update dvd player is closed when you go into front row.)

  • I am trying to burn DVDs from iPhoto slideshows.  My pictures number in the hundreds and we know that iPhoto captures 99 and then "starts over".  This plays fine from the Mac Book but glitches arise on the DVD when playing it on a DVD player.  Any suggsts

I am trying to burn DVDs from iPhoto slideshows.  My pictures number in the hundreds and we know that iPhoto captures 99 and then "starts over".  This plays fine from the Mac Book but glitches arise on the DVD when playing it on a DVD player.  Any suggestions on how to overcome the 99 "Chapter limitation" that IPhoto has?  Has anyone heard or tried an app called Vilisoft?  I read good things but I am not sure if it will do what I want.
    Jim

Then use multipel 99 picture slideshows.
You can have up to 8 or 9 slideshows per menu.  If you add a sub menu reduce that by 1 and add 8 more to the sub menu.  The top menu can have links to up to 8 or so submenus (depends on the theme) and each submenu can have up to 8 or so slideshows.
However, converting a very large slideshow to a QT movie as Terence suggested does not envoke the 99 slide limit in iDVD.  It just becomes a single video/movie file.  So you should not have a problem with exporting at the large size, 720 x 540,
and dragging the resulting file into the iDVD menu being sure to avoid any drop zones.

  • Does Front Row use Quicktime plugins during play?

    Hi,
Just curious - does Front Row play everything that you've set up Quicktime to play? For example, if my Quicktime can play Divx files that my Toast 7 creates, does that automatically mean Front Row can play them as well? Or, does Front Row have it's own feature set of things it will and won't play?
    Thanks

Yes, it does. Any app that uses the QuickTime architecture has available everything else that QuickTime does.

  • Front Row DVD Playback

When ever I watch a DVD in front row, the progress bar appears at the change of every title. In the middle of the movie when it changes layers it pops up on screen. Does anyone know of a way to stop this?
    Thanks

I got on the discussion board to see what people were saying about the new front row. I read your entry and thought I would see if I would experience the same problem. Sure enough I did. I put a DVD in that I had watched a few days ago before leopard came out and it would play perfectly in the old Front Row. Now it is so choppy! Sorry, I can't help you with a solution, but at least you know now you aren't the only one having this issue.

  • Where does Front Row get its list of Videos?

Where does Front Row get its list of Videos? And how do I purge this list? Front Row is listing Videos that no longer exist on my computer and when selected do nothing.
I tried by trashing my prefs, but the same missing files are still in the list.

ok, worked on it a little bit more... the only thing left was an entry in the library file, when you opened the xml file in safari you could find the entry. I didn't dare playing around with the file itself, but found a script called: "super remove dead tracks" on this website, which does the trick: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scripts01.php?page=1#removedeadsuper
it worked great, nothing is showing up in front row any.

  • Does front row?

i was wondering does front row save you battery time on your macbook/pro? like if i'm on an airplane and want to watch a DVD is it worth it to watch it in front row or in iDVD? or some other program entirely?

No, it is incompatible and has been withdrawn by Apple.
If you read the other 150 threads on the subject in this forum you may find a workaround.

  • Does Jabber Client 9.6 have the option to save Chat history within Outlook 'Conversation history' like Lync does?

Does Jabber Client 9.6 have the option to save Chat history within Outlook 'Conversation history' like Lync does?
Any guidance/response would be greatly appreceiated. thanks in advance.

The latest release of Jabber allows you to save the chat you had in html by enabling EnableSaveChatToFile
But yes, IM&P requires a separate server in which to hold all the messages that go thru the server, this is for management purposes, not really meant for users.
Persistent chat will hold all the messages, but this also requires a separate DB server to hold them.
You're free to use any other XMPP client you prefer which has this capabilities on the client side.
