Does Mountain Lion come with an Apache server and if so how do I access it?
On my previous Mac there was a check box for web sharing in the Sharing System Preferences. I used this to experiment with HTML website design. How do I do this on my new Mac?

Thanks for the reply. Others have asked similar questions. I was directed to a user tip page

  • Does Mountain Lion come with Pages?

I recently purchased a new 27" iMac from Best Buy with the i5 Quad Core, 1TB HDD and 4GB RAM. The display model in the store was running Lion, and on the spec sheet, or price sheet for the computer it states that the ones sold were running Lion also. So I was a bit surprised when I got home and saw that it was running Mountain Lion. Pretty cool I guess but I think some things are different. For example, I didn't get to see the famous Mac start-up movie, which sucked because I was really looking forward to that, I even had my camcorder out ready to record it, because it's a pretty cool little demo, and it's my first Mac, so I was wanting to see it. Something I really didn't expect though is the lack of the Pages application being pre-loaded. it only comes with some dinky little application called "Text Edit", which opens up really small, and even though you can expand the window, I haven't yet found a way to expand the actual rule at the top of the area where text is entered, and to increase that ratio, which ***** because it's all super tiny on this super huge screen. I really expected Pages to come factory installed on here, seeing as how it is the most commonly used Mac word processor (I'm assuming). Now it looks like I have to pay $20 just for Pages, especially when it would have been nothing for Apple just to pre-install it on here from the factory? I just paid over $1700 for a computer with a little quad-core, only 1TB HDD, a tiny little 4GB of RAM (though I now have 16GB of RAM) and a little 512MB GPU? And Apple can't even throw me a bone and give me pages? Come on now, what's the deal? Can anyone help me out, with what usually comes pre-installed on Macs? I would appreciate it.
P.S. Apple, if you want to make me happy credit me $20 or provide me with a link to download the Pages application for free..

silvergc, I'm not looking for your support. Just a bit of friendly advice. I'm coming from using PC where there's quite a programs made available for your pre-loaded on your computer I wasn't sure as to what actually came pre-installed. I just assumed that certain applications did because every single mac I've seen had them installed. But I guess it was my mistake. Oh, and a little hint, you don't really have to be rude and compare my lack of knowledge about Macs to your all-knowing mighty superiority. People make mistakes. Also, whether pages came with the thing or not was never going to be a deal breaker, I was just using the price point to put things into prospective a little. I just needed a little clarification on what was actually meant to come with the computer, to see how I made out. Because as I stated before I come from using a PC all my life and I know that programs that come pre-loaded can vary with a PC. Great job though at making one of my first encounters with people from the Mac community, not so great. Maybe I could have looked a little harder, but your pointless post really accomplishes nothing, and only makes yourself seem like a person who would post something simply to be rude to someone. "I don't have your support", alright.. Awesome, but you know what? I also would have not had your support if you didn't bother to post anything at all.

  • Does mountain lion come with Mac Book Pro

I just purchased a Mac Book Pro with retina display 10.8.2 but when I go to the app store it says I need to pay 19,99 for a copy how do I get a copy of mountain lion to keep just in case I need to rebuild the PC

As you stated, your new MacBook Pro came with Mountain Lion pre-installed.  The pre-install version is not the same as the version in the Mac App Store, so if you want a copy from the App store, you need to buy it.
Before you get all excited, your new MacBook Pro has a feature called "Internet Recovery".  If you should need to restore your machine (say for example you want to replace your hard drive for some reason), you just put in the new drive, and hold down the option key when you hear the boot chime.  It should being up a lit of possible boot options, and near the bottom of the list should be an option for a "Network Boot".  Is you select that, your MacBook Pro will connect to the Apple servers, and download the correct version of the OS for your machine.  How long it takes will depend upon your internet connection, and the time when you are performing the recovery.  If you try it during an iOS major update, it is likely the Apple servers will be slow and it may take a while, but if you try at a more normal time, it may finish the download (about 4.7GB) in under 2 hours, depending upon your internet connection.  Keep in mind that if you have a local Apple Store, you can go there and use their wifi network to perform the download process...

  • Does mountain lion comes with graphic, Does mountain lion comes with graphi, Does mountain lion comes with graphic driver updates?  I'm currently using snow leopard, and it seems that there's no graphic driver updates for a really long time.

    Need some advice

I'm currently using snow leopard, and it seems that there's no graphic driver updates for a really long time.
Snow Leopard is no longer being updated, 10.6.8, was the last update. So, a "really long time," will be forever.
Yes, ML has graphic driver updates, but since there is no way to guess whether it impacts your unmentioned hardware, there is no way your question can be answered.

  • Does the imac come with a wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse?

I am buying an imac tomorrow and I was wondering if I have to pay extra for a wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse.

iMac's come with a wireless keyboard and magic mouse, as the standard fare. So you don't need to pay extra for them. I would recommend purchasing rechargable batteries and a charger, as the mouse does chew through batteries.

  • Does OS mountain lion come with Remote desktop?

My 2012 Pro does not have remote desktop anywhere on it.  All the other macs I've encountered have had it preloaded.  Is mountain lion just the first os to not have it installed?

Remote Desktop is not included with Mountain Lion nor is it preloaded on new Macs. You have to buy it:
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/apple-remote-desktop/id409907375?mt=12
Many features that were previously only available on Remote Desktop, screen sharing for instance, are now part of OS X though.

  • Mountain Lion: problem with Time Machine directories and spotlight indexing

I'm using a fresh install of 10.8 Mountain Lion on a 2011 MBP.  It's a work laptop with many ASCII files containing numerical data (floating point numbers), with varying file extensions.  Some of the files are multi-gig, some are only a few hundred K, and there are tens of thousands of them.  Roughly 500G of numerical data.
I can disable spotlight from indexing certain subdirectories of my home directory on the local drive.  However, when using Time Machine to backup, I seem to be entirely unable to prevent spotlight from attemping to fully index the external drive (Time Machine volume).   I actually let spotlight run for over 36 hours this weekend in a futile attempt for it to finish indexing the TM volume.   The /.Spotlight-V100 index on the external drive is roughly 100G and continuously written and overwritten.  /var/log/system.log had various "Merging failed" messages for temp spotlight files.  I deleted the index, let spotlight run again overnight, but it did not finish indexing.  "sudo fs_usage -f filesys mds mdworker mdimport mdworker32 | grep open" showed spotlight slowly chugging through the thousands of numerical files.
I believe the problem is related to this old report from someone who noticed a leopard -> snow leopard change:
    http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=106703
    http://forums.cnet.com/7723-6126_102-366184/snow-leopard-10-6-spotlight-indexing -and-disk-usage/
However, I don't see an easy solution.  In ML, if you drag the TM volume to the spotlight privacy list it gives you a message about how you can't disable indexing of TM volumes because it's essential for TM.  I have not yet tried to manually put in some kind of .metadata_never_index file in the relevant TM volume directories (I am not sure if that will do anything, or perhaps break TM backups), but that's one possible next step.
Anyone have ideas on how I can have my TM backups work but the spotlight indexing of all these data files (their subdirectories) disabled?   I'm not specifically TRYING to back up those data files with TM (they're duplicated elsewhere), they're just on the same machine as a bunch of other stuff I need backed up via TM.  Apple has a disaster on their hands for anyone trying to backup a machine which also has large data sets.

I'm not aware of any avenue to tell spotlight to not index all or part of a backup.
However, the indexing should work, even if takes a long time.
I don't think this is a new issue and has been part of TM from the start.
Realistically, it may be time to consider whether TM is the best choice for these data files?
Are they very volatile do they change frequently both as to content of individual files and total set of files?
If not, then a clone or syncing type of backup might be better suited for these files.
I do not back up all my files via time machine. I keep photographs and music outside of Time Machine. to be sure they are backed up but via clones.
To show why  this might the best take photographs. My photographs are basically immutable once they enter the system, but I may come back with 5000 images from a trip and whittle that down to a few hundred eventually. This would cause a lot of files to be saved in TM that are no longer wanted, - but are not easy to remove formthe backup. while the ones I want haven't changed. TM is not geared to make handling that easily.
As a further aside, ideally one should back everything of value up twice via 2 different means.
I've had backup drives fail.I've had TM logically fail (disk is fine -TM internal data structures bad).

  • Does Mountain Lion work with Adobe CS4?

This may have already been asked, but I didn't see it when searching. Sorry if its a duplicate question.
I have the Adobe CS4 Master Suite running on my imac (27" Quad core i7 processor at 2.93GHz with 8GB ram) currently running very smoothly on 10.6.8. I'm thinking of upgrading to 10.8. My question is does the upgrade break or slow down anything in the Adobe CS4 Suite? I mainly use Illustrator, Acrobat and Photoshop for my work and occasionally run Indesign, Fireworks or Dreamweaver (all CS4)
Any help or comments would be appreciated before I buy and download the 10.8 update. If any of the programs I mentioned have issues, are they major or minor?
    Thanks!

    Yes.
    Are my applications compatible?
