Does screen sharing icon always mean someone is watching?

Is it always true that the existence of the sharing icon means that another computer is looking at my screen?
I have noticed that sometimes, but not always, as soon as I enable screen sharing, the sharing icon appears at the top of the screen; even though no one is apparently sharing my screen. I limit who can share to my own login credentials; I use a strong password and while it is always possible someone got it, it doesn't seem very likely they would turn on screen sharing at the exact time that I enabled it. When I click on the icon and then click to end screen sharing, the icon soon reappears.
Also, typically when you are sharing "on purpose" and you click to stop the sharing, you are given a warning that the other user will be disconnected. I don't get that warning when I stop the sharing, which leads me to suspect that indeed no one is watching ... which begs the question of why is the icon there if no one is actively sharing?

Hi,
For the points
You emailed me this post as well. One Method will do.

"Hi,
We are talking about the app tucked away in the Hard Drive/System/Library/Core Services folder ?
This is the same app as invoked in the Go Menu > Go to Server > VNC
(missing icon here) Said Icon (I see an Outline of Screen but also see it has the binoculars)
When I do this via the Go Menu I am asked to Log on to the other computer.
I have not got the "Remember this in my Keychain" activated.
I have not played around with it enough to find out if it will try to reconnect if the second (Shared) computer is shut down before the request end has Quit the App.
I also Quit by using the App Menu rather than the iCon drop down and so do not get the message.
Also if I use the Red Button on the Screen asking to Share the window closes and the App Quits with no warning popping up either.
I think, looking at your phrasing in the Post, that this has something to do with the way you are ending Screen Sharing - either stopping Permission when Connected or shutting down the the Shared Screen Computer whilst still sharing.
The other computer (asking to Share) is then trying to re-establish the connection - possibly with Keychain Stored info as soon as Permission is granted again."

  • Why is Messages screen sharing icon grayed out?

Trying to do remote screen sharing with my mom's Mac using the new feature in Yosemite.
If you're not familiar with it, the new method does not require AIM, Jabber, etc and is independent of screen sharing settings in System Preferences (per Messages Help).
    The procedure is:
In the main Messages window, select the name of the person you want to share with or, if you haven't previously exchanged messages, do so now.
Click 'details' on the right of the top bar of the main window.
In the menu that pops up, there are three icons: screen sharing, video chat, and audio chat/phone call. Click the screen sharing icon and send a request.
Today, my mom signed into her Messages account and we successfully exchanged iMessage messages (not SMS).
When I clicked 'details' the screen sharing and phone call icons were grayed out (or, more accurately, 'blued out' - they were a fainter shade of blue).
I clicked another name in the Conversations list and then clicked back to my mom's name. When I clicked 'details' this time, the screen sharing icon was no longer grayed out, so I sent a request to share her screen. She didn't receive the request, so I canceled it.
When I clicked on 'Details' again, the screen sharing icon was grayed out again. As far as I know, nothing had changed on my mom's end.
What could cause the screen sharing icon to be grayed out? And what could cause it to toggle back and forth between grayed out and normal?
Both computers are running the latest version of Yosemite, 10.10.3. Mine is a 2009 Mac Pro 8-core with 16 GB RAM, hers is a MacBook Pro from around 2012 or 2013.
    Thanks!
    Bob

    Hi,
(He did say that he'd heard that due to changes in Google's system that their accounts no longer work with Messages.)
What he has heard and what are true are two different things
    Logged in Google account
There are issues with Messages using SSL to login to the Google Talk server and Google saying SSL is Less Secure (there is a  setting to Enable Less Secure apps like Mail that also uses SSL and Messages).
Some people find that 2 step Verification cannot be set at Google's Account settings if your want to use the Less Secure Apps setting.
    1. I deleted my AIM account from Messages and had my mom do the same. The result is that we each only have two items in the Accounts window of Messages: an iMessage account (signed in with our Apple IDs) and a Bonjour account.
    2. Clicking on the Details menu, the screen sharing icon was available for both of us. It was not grayed out.
This is using two different Methods of Screen Sharing in Messages (It is silly it has two but there we go)
For AIM use the Buddy List and the icons at the bottom or highlight the Buddy and use the Buddies Menu
DO NOT USE the Details option.
For iMessages start text chat then use the Detail Option an NOT THE BUDDIES Menu.
For the iMessages Method you have to Enable System Preferences > Sharing > Screen Sharing to allow the App to be Invoked.
(It is like FaceTime is invoked but only works to Macs)
As you mention the Connection Doctor only refers to the older "iChat Method for Aim and Jabber and Bonjour - if you can Video you should be able to Screen Share with that method.

  • Screen sharing icon in Messages dimmed out when it shouldn't be

Running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 on 2009 27" iMac. I was attempting to share my screen with another person also running OS X Yosemite (also 10.10.2) via Messages and the screen sharing icon is dimmed out (while both FaceTime video and audio icons are NOT dimmed out). I went through creating and entering an app specific password for both Messages and FaceTime and my iCloud account is signed into both. Tried signing out and back in as well, but that did not resolve it. Tried rebooing as well, but the issue remains. The other person is able to screen share with other individuals running Yosemite so I assume it's something on my end, but I have no idea what.
    Ideas?

    Hi,
    The App is Messages.
It can have an iMessages account is use.
This distinction is becoming more important as time goes on.
In Yosemite the Messages App can start a  Video (or Audio and also Screen Sharing) two different ways.  (it's related bear with me).
As the iChat app the AIM and Jabber accounts have been able to Video chat within the app since iChat 2 for AIM accounts and iChat 3 for Jabber when it was added.  (Screen Sharing is added at iChat 4)
This needs the Video Menu > Enable the three items for Video, Audio and Screen Sharing.
In Yosemite the iMessages account can start a video from the Main window when a text Chat is going on using the Details option to right.
To start an AIM Video chat (same for Jabber and Bonjour) you need the Buddy list to be displayed, Highlight the Buddy and then use either the icon at the bottom of the Buddy List or the Buddies menu.
To Start an iMessages Video chat you need to first set up FaceTime with the same Apple ID account (it can be done with a different ID but this can cause confusing at the other end about who is calling).
Then you use the Details option having started a Text (iMessages) chat with them.
This in turn Invokes the FaceTime App and 'Calls' the ID your are iMessaging to.  If you are using a different ID in FaceTime they see that and not the one in the iMessages account.
    Screen Sharing
Screen Sharing is similar in that it (iMessages account) invokes an outside app to do the Screen Sharing.
You first need to go to System Preferences > Sharing and enable the Screen Sharing item.
Then in Messages in the Main window during a iMessages Chat/conversation with someone you need to use the Details option top right and select the Linked Squares for the Screen Sharing.
This invokes the Screen Sharing App (System/Library/Core Services/Applications) and connects the two computers with and Audio chat along side.
For the iChat type accounts (AIM, Jabber and Bonjour) you use the Buddy list like the Video chats.
    NOTES.
If you have other Macs on your LAN and they appear in the Finder's Side bar as Shares you can select them and use the button in the Finder Window to Screen Share with those Macs.
This too invokes the Screen Sharing app.
Another way is to use the Go Menu in the Finder > Go to Server and enter VNC:// and the IP address instead of AFP or SMB (Or Browse instead)
In the System Preferences > Sharing you will also find Remote Management.
This cannot be on the same time as Screen Sharing. However in use from the Finder it allows the Screen Sharing described above.
All of these use the Client end of Apple Remote Desktop (ARD).
However the Finder methods described do not come wither Audio Chat described for the iMessages  or AIM/Jabber/Bonjour way.
Also if you try to use the Details method with an AIM or Jabber of Bonjour Buddy it will not work as it tries to do this the iMessages way.
Basically "icons" and "Messages"  is not enough to say where you are in the app to pin point this further.

  • 10.8 Screen Sharing Icon Stuck

Has anyone had the 10.8 screen sharing icon stick in the menu bar of a computer that has been controlled?  I've already tried to pull it out of the menu bar using the CMD key like one can with most icons, but all it does is slide the icon back and forth in the bar.
Also, the only computer to ever control my iMac is shut down.
    thx

Actually the screen shot above is a right-click on the sharing icon, any clicking results in the contextual menu.  I guess I also forgot to mention that I'd already tried your suggestions along with a reboot prior to posting but thanks.
I guess I'll have to wait until I go to work and maybe connect back to this computer and disconnect to see if that clears it.  Maybe it's just "stuck".

We don't know because update function is hidden so deep in the Menu bar's help item that many people don't even know about it.  Now you are telling us that an icon is on your desktop so this is completely unusual.
Are you sure it is not the icon for the PSE10 to make it easy for you to launch it?  Can you post a screenshot of what is on your desktop.
We look forward to hearing from you soon.

  • How to show list in Screen Sharing icon in Dock?

On one of my iMacs, I've added the Screen Sharing icon to the dock for quick access. When I right click it, I can choose from recent sessions, and the session will open like normal. That machine is running 10.8.1.
How do I enable this behavior? I have a MacBook Air also running 10.8.1, and for the life of me, I can't figure out how to enable this behavior.
Thanks for your help, but please note, I'm trying to enable the behavior I'm asking about -- I know all the other tricks about making direct aliases, etc. That's not what I'm trying to do.

I have the exact same question. Did you figure it out?
    Thanks!

  • Why does Screen Sharing between Macs no longer work?

Just recently many of my Mac computers have stopped Screen Sharing with each other. I cannot think of any reason why this would begin happening. These computers are 'system critical' computers so I haven't updated to Mavericks yet. One is an iMac running OS X 10.8 and the other is a Mac Mini running 10.7. Any clues?

This could be something as simple as a bad Router Port. Try switching the Ethernet cable on one of the effected Macs to a port that you know is working. When I was running computer labs, bad ports were a commmon issue.  If that doen't work we will move on to other possible solutions.

  • One .mac account, 4 computers - does screen sharing work?

    Hi there,
I have one .mac account, however I have multiple computers running Leopard at home. Is it possible to have multiple ichat accounts on one single .mac account? Or do I have to get a .mac account for each computer of the household in order to be able to have them as separate entities on my contact list and therefore share the screen?
If it's possible with one .mac account, how would I have to set up my machines?
    Thanks for information,

What you are trying to do is not a "basic requirement". You should be directly using the hotel's wifi or sharing your computer's Internet connection using its wifi.

  • Does "merge in Photoshop" always mean HDR?

I have CS4 and am familiar with HDR techniques either with Photoshop or Photomatix.  But occasionally I hear of images being "merged" in Photoshop and don't know if this means HDR, or using different exposures and/or layers to create an image in another way.  Can anyone educate me on this please?

    Hi,
Only when calling out HDR specifically, as in 'Merge to HDR Pro...'. "Merge" as in Photomerge is used to stitch together multiple images for panoramas, collages, architectural photos, etc. where one single frame is not able to capture the intended image.
You might also hear 'merge' used in reference to merging multiple layers into a single layer, or 'merging down' referring to merging an active working layer down into a composition layer.

  • Cancelling Screen Sharing over Bonjour does not work

I have a MacBook and an iMac on the same local network. Both are running updated OS X 10.5 (Leopard).
    Here's the situation:
    1. Let's say I'm at my MacBook and I want to see my iMac's screen. I open screen sharing.
    2. For whatever reason, I later am sitting at my iMac, and I see the screen sharing icon in the menu bar. I select it and tell it to disconnect.
    3. A few seconds later, the icon returns.
The same thing happens if the computers are reversed.
    Why is this?

This issue remains unresolved, but since Apple Discussions decided to archive my question it is impossible to receive any replies.

  • Screen sharing- not showing who is on my mac

i've got screen sharing setup on all our macs and works great- HOWEVER, on occasion, a number of things can happen:
1- i am unable to access a computer even though i accessed it earlier; i need to restart the computer and then it works
2- when i shut down the computer, a message pops up that 2users are accessing the computer though there is only one or even none on the network that can do so and the remote computer icon shows only 1computer address or no icon present (does that mean someone is hacking my computer?)
3- when i shut down the computer, a message pops up that there is a user and there is no remote computer icon visible (again, is someone hacking my computer?)
2 and 3 above concern me the most especially since at times i don't see the screen sharing icon, so don't know who's accessing the computer... and no one knows how to access my main computer which is where this problem occurs. 1 happens on the other macs when trying to access the main computer.
i've got my network running on a timecapsule with WPA2 personal security, password for timecapsule disk, password for computers, screen sharing set to admin only with no other people listed for access so a bit concerned about this would GREATLY appreciate the help/information anyone has!
    thanks
ps- i also had this problem in snow leopard

The upgrade just showed up for me when the criteria was met. Try reindexing your Mac.

  • Imessages screen sharing

    Hi
I am running mountain lion. I am attempting to take over a friend's screen the way I used to be able to do in ichat, but the option is gayed out "ask to share xxx screen'.
Does screen sharing work in imessages? I've looked at one discussion thread that seemed to suggest it doesn't?
    Thanks folks

    Hi,
FaceTime can be invoked (Started) from the Mesages Beta if you have been iMessaging someone.
(You could also chose to Video them straightaway without texting first but the Name from the Contacts List in the "To" spot will still be based on iMessages and the Video icon will launch FaceTime.
FaceTime does not do Screen Sharing.
The Screen Sharing option (As well as the Audio Only chats and Video Chats set in the same menu) refer to the old "iChat Style" Buddy Lists and the options to connect from those.
For these you and your Buddy need the Type of Screen Name or ID to "match" in the broadest sense.
Either you both have something valid with AIM (AIM or @Mac.com and @me.com ending names from Apple IDs) or something that can be used with a Jabber login (Facebook, Google or other Jabber ID).
As long as you both use iChat or Message beta then you can Video Chat. Audio Only chat and Screen Share  (AIM to AIM or Jabber to Jabber)

My screen sharing functionality did not show up in the dock with an updated icon.  It had a question mark- shows my connections but nothing works, I did make sure screen sharing is on and also connected to VPN.  Once I tried to launch screen sharing nothing happens.  Such an elegant solution in Mavericks not does not work. Upgraded to Yosemite and can no longer remote into my work iMac through screen sharing- it is turned on in settings?
I believe the location of the "Screen Sharing" app has changed, which explains why if you had it in the dock it has been replaced by a ?
Don't forget you can launch screen sharing (once your VPN connection is up) by typing in the Safari destination slot vnc://remotemachinename:portnumber  (omit the :port number if you are using the default VNC port, 5900).  This should launch Screen Sharing and put its icon in the dock.  You can drag the Screen Sharing icon to the left of your dock and it will hopefully remain there after you exit Screen Sharing, or you can right-click on the icon when it's running and select Options->Show in Finder to find out its new location and drag its icon to the permanent entries in your dock.
Hope this helps; worked for me.
