Does setQueryTimeout work or not?

We're using oracle 8i on windows nt with the classes111.zip jdbc library. If I lock a table and then my code tries to update it, my query hangs even though I've set the query timeout to 5 seconds.
I've read in several discussion groups that there is a problem with the setQueryTimeout method, but there's no bug reports on it.
Is this a known problem, should we suspect our code, or what?

There is a known bug with query timeout that results in the driver leaving dead threads around. Other than that, it does work in the 8i drivers.

Passive interface on a SVI, does that work or not?

Hello all,
At my office, I am trying to clean some of the routing table and fix some routing issues. We run eigrp for internal network. In one of the routers, eigrp neighbor relationship is through SVIs only. I'm actively trying to use "passive interface default" for all the L3 devices, and doing "no passive... " for the interfaces that are currently forming neighbor relationship. So, does that work the same for SVIs? Do I just do "no passive interface default int vlan XX" for all the SVI that are forming the neighbor relationship? will that work the same as for a physical interface? or do I need to track the physical ports that are actively using that vlan? I have looked around and haven't found a definitive answer. I would really appreciate some help.

Mini DisplayPort to DVI and VGA - Does it work or not?

I have just received my new aluminium MacBook Pro, and I think it is awesome. I can even get over the fact that it lacks the full-size DVI connection like the old one has just because it is so nice and shiny. I do need it to work with both DVI and VGA displays though, so I know I will need to buy an adaptor.
My question is: If I buy either the mini DisplayPort to DVI or the dual-DVI adaptor from the apple store, will either one of them work with a DVI-VGA cable? I have heard so far that the single-DVI adaptor does NOT support the VGA pass-through, but would like some confirmation. Even if it is cheaper to buy both the DVI and VGA adaptors I would prefer the dual-DVI adaptor as long as it can do VGA as well, because one adaptor is better than 2.

You will need to buy both adapters, the MiniDisplay to DVI and a MiniDisplay to VGA. I would also suggest you voice your opinion at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html and let them know how you feel about needing to purchase an adapter when one should be included with the computer purchase.

Webi 4.0 Passing parameters - how the heck ! does it work or not ?

i am knew to all this, quite capable of reading manuals, and an ex ABAPer in SAP.
but when it comes to trying to pass a single parameter to a Webi report, based upon the new open document v4.0 syntax, it has finally got me.
it seems i am not alone either.
this works, and opens the webi with the full contents

i have tried both, a "new parameter" and a universe parameter, based upon my dimension "State", with no such luck on the underlying webi query filter.
i thought i would only have to add "&lsSState=VIC" (no including the quotes), for it to filter my records for the state Victoria (no points for guessing where i am). But no. I still get all the same old records.
then i tried *District=VIC", still the same old records without applying the query filter.
so what am i doing wrong ! please ! help !

finally, here's the deal
the opendocument 4.0 documentation is wrong. the parameter values are separated by at semicolon, and not a comma. also, do not put square brackets around them.

SynchNotification - Does it Work or Not

I have read three places on this forum about SynchNotification - seems like a great concept. However, when the procedure is put into place, it is never executed by the Synch Manager (though it has two lines showing it has started and completed the procedure). Please confirm whether this procedure does or does not work. If it does not work, do you happen to know if it will be fixed in a future patch?

I'm not sure of the details in the other posts but if you create a stored procedure called "SynchTransaction" in the WebTools database it should get called at the very end of the synch process.
I just created one that simply inserts a record into my TransactionQueue and it did as expected. If the synch crashes and doesn't finish then that call will not be made ... so I guess some of those timeout errors may prevent it from being called. Essentially, if you see the message "Starting SynchNotification." then it should be called if it exists.

Open "SAFE" document: does it works or not?

Hi all guys.
A customer is asking me why, after have downloaded a file ( .doc, for eample) the document is not open automatically.
I've read many issues about this and the setting in General/Open Safe document.... seems to be the only setting I can do.
But it does not work!
Any idea?
Actually, my only opportunity is to switch to Firefox...and this make me sad!

In my case the Safari Preference, "Open 'Safe" files after downloading" does work. I keep it unchecked as a security precaution and I highly recommend others do as well. You didn't mention if your customer had a copy of Word on their machine. If not, that would certainly explain why the ".doc" file was not automatically opened after downloading.
One possible "workaround" is to simply double-click the downloaded file from within Safari's "Download" window. No need to retrieve it fron the Finder, though that is also an option. Just double-click the files icon.

L3-LL Ultra - Dithering on 24 bit: does it work or not?

Just wondering if Dithering effectively works even with 24 bit quantize....

In the manual for the L3-LL Ultra it says:
' The Quantize control sets the target bit depth of the L3-LL output. Quantize is always active, so the output of the L3-LL will be quantized to a maximum of 24-bits even if you are in a floating point environment.'
Try switching the shaping from Normal to moderate to Ultra to se if it makes a difference. I admit, it's not really that clear exactly what it is doing but if I'm reading it correctly it is saying that although the Logic mix engine works at 32 bit, the audio passing through the L3 will have it's bit depth set to 24 bit. But that would mean on playback. Bouncing out to a 24 bit file would indicate no dithering but the noise shaping will still apply (according to the manual).

This setting typically reduces perceived hiss (or distortion, if dither is not used) by around 6dB. The added high frequency noise is about 9dB at 44.1 kHz sampling rate.
Normal
This setting typically reduces perceived hiss (or distortion, if dither is not used) by around 12dB. The added high frequency noise is about 15dB at 44.1 kHz sampling rate. This setting, together with Type1 dithering, is well suited to the creation of CD production masters. It is also good for masters that may be processed again for any reason, including consecutive re-dithering, as its accumulated noise effect is minimal.
Ultra This setting delivers the greatest perceived hiss/distortion reduction, typically around 18dB. The added high frequency noise is about 23dB at 44.1 kHz sampling rate. This setting is suitable only at the very last stage of mastering high resolution audio for high-quality digital media (16-bit and longer wordlengths). Ultra is best suited for the final stage of preparing production masters, and should be avoided in cases where the audio will undergo further editing.
The parts in brackets '(or distortion, if dither is not used) seems to indicate that if the output file matches the quantize setting it is ignored but doesn't actually say that. Does the sound change on playback when you alter the shaping? If it does, just go with your ears and what you think sounds best.

Does Familybase work or not?

Just wondering what other peoples experiences are with FamilyBase, especially in regards to time limits on Windows Phones.
I just picked up a Nokia 928 for my teen daughter who was on a regular phone previously. Talking with the rep about better control over smartphone usage and he recommended FamilyBase so I thought I would try it. So far I'm not impressed and it is not doing what I was told it would do.
Specifically, I want to set time limits on when text/data can be used. I set time limits to block between 10pm to 6am on weeknights, and it's had absolutely no effect whatsoever, she can text and surf the web/hit YouTube without issue during the times she is supposed to be blocked. I've even gone so far as create a time block from 12am to 11:59pm and it has no effect. She is on wifi here at the house as well and while I can block wifi access during these times separately on our firewall, I was told this service would block access during those times regardless of 4g or wifi access.
Another issue is the delay in reporting, as it seems to be 2-3 days behind.
I understand there is no windows app to be able to block on demand or see apps. I'm fine with that, I just want to simple be able to be able to block network access during the time frames I specify while allowing calls and text to Mm and Dad. Will this service do that reliably or not? If I can't control the access time on the phone it's going to have to go back. =)

So, I'm completely blocking phone access to our wifi router so the phone cannot connect to wifi. I have a block set for 12am until 11:45pm all days. In essence, the phone should have zero access to the 4G or wifi network. I've verified the phone is not connected to the wifi router. This has been set since Monday.
I just went and looked on the usage for that line both in FamilyBase as well as on Verizon. Data Usage on Verizon shows the following:
2/28 - 30Mb Data Usage so far today
2/27 - 70Mb Data Usage
2/26 - 1Mb Data Usage
2/25 - 0Mb Usage
FamilyBase shows 0 activity in the activity logs since Monday.

Ipod from pawn shop, wont register in itunes...does it work or not?

I had an ipod (2nd gen) but it got wet. I have a bunch of songs in my itunes and just purchased a ipod (1st gen) from a pawn shop and want the songs from my itunes to be put on the new one. Im alittle confused about clearing the songs off the old. Also when I plug the new one in, It doesnt want to open itunes or have any response whatsoever on my computer. Please comment with any help.

Can/Does the iPod Shuffle still retain a charge? In other words, when you remove it from the charger does it power on still? If not, it's a likely sign that the battery is shot and in need of a replacment, especially considering the age of the device.

Bluetooth in new Sequoia - does it work or not?

I was just wondering if anyone out there has a new Toyota Sequoia with built-in bluetooth AND a first generation iPhone with 2.0. I need to know if anyone can tell me with certainty if this vehicle will still connect with the iPhone's bluetooth after the 2.0 update or not (I know many car bluetooths have been disabled with the 2.0).
I ask because I have a friend who has not yet updated and she will probably die if she is unable to use the bluetooth in her car. I need to know if it will work before I help her update. Thanks in advance.

Synchroniation - does it work or not?

I have a Skype client (latest) with some history. I'm installing new client onto another PC. History is syncing very, very partially. It does sync only for recent contacts and not more than for a month. Some of recent contacts sync only when I mark them as unread, not more than a last month also.
Is there something to do with that?

Only the latest about 30 days chat history is saved on Skype Network (The Cloud) and synced to Skype on new devices.

Disk Utility: Does it work or not? What has changed?

After upgrading just about five hours ago to Leopard, and applying all upgrades and updates as well as security updates, I have noticed that Disk Utility is not th same snappy piece of software it used to be.
In Tiger, I used to run Disk Utility every time there was an upgrade or update and it took usually from less than a minute to sometimes a couple minutes. This time I get the bar immediately stating a 'less than a minute' operation but it results in something about 10 or more minutes.
It would be great if anyone from Apple or even someone with Technical information would post why is this, and what has changed with Disk Utility and how can we make sure that new permissions are fixed when the new Disk Utility can't do so. Like in my case I receive the following after the long wait.

On my Mac it normally runs fine and fast. The SUID errors your getting are harmless. See this.

If they bother you run the Mac OS X 10.5.1 Update again. It got rid of all mine when I did this.
