Does siri access 411 to look up phone numbers

Does siri access 411 (pay per use service) to look up a phone number when you ask for one?

Siri will search your contacts and certain things on the web, see http://www.apple.com/ios/siri/siri-faq/

  • Why does Siri and Maps turn off the phone when activated?

I have a 4S less than 1.5 years old and  bought it because I wouldn't get any viruses.  I use the phone for calls, e-mail, surfing web and directions.  Now when I engage Siri or Maps for directions/location, my phone turns off and restarts.  I get nothing, nada, black screen and then an Apple log and then I am back to square one.    I think I have a bug of some sort that got in when the web page I went to asked to use my location and wouldn't let me say no.   Has this happened to anyone else?  How can I fix it?  -bam

    Try a reset:
Reset: Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Note: You will not lose any data
    Settings > Safari >
         Clear History
         Clear Cookies and Data

  • In case of emergency, how does someone access my contacts when my phone is locked?

I have an iphone 5 and during CPR training it dawned on me that there was no way for anyone, other than me, to access my emergency contacts if I was in an accident.
Is there a way to do this?

I kind of like the lock screen idea though - they do not need to know anything about the make/model of the device, just swipe to unlock and the info is right there.
Although I also always wear a medicalert neck pendant and I'd encourage anyone with a known serious or chronic medical condition to use medicalert and wear the id (calling their toll free number will get a first responder all sorts of information if needed).
If you think of a better way, or just an alternate way to handle it, submit your feedback to Apple
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Since they control the core features of iOS, this is something they could possible add to a future iOS release (maybe a "special" group in Contacts that could be set to show on the swipe, while everything else remains locked?).

  • When I sync'd I lost many phone numbers--looks like the current ones I entered on my phone.

It looks like phone numbers that I entered on my iphone have been lost during my last sync.  I use GMAIL to manage my contacts.  However, when I looked at the options for syncing, it gives me "windows" or "outlook".  I've never had a problem losing contacts before.  I need to get those many hundred contacts back on my phone but I'm concerned about messing it up further.  Suggestions?

I just figured it out, thanks to the Google help site.  I had removed my Gmail account from my normal mail some time ago.  Remember when Apple cut off some Google items?? Anyway, I downloaded the Google App and was getting my mail directly from that.
To resolve my contacts issue I re-added my Gmail account to my regular mail accounts and made sure that the "contacts" were "on".  Thus my Gmail contacts now were merged with my other contacts and recovered the phone numbers.

While trying to sync an ipod touch and a new iphone 5S the phone numbers in my contacts was erased.  The other information on them in the contacts is still there but the phone numbers on everyone is gone.  Does anyone know how to retrieve the phone numbers.

  • My iphone 6 connects to the car via bluetooth, the music works good, but the phone calles does not work.  It looks like it is working but doesn't.  I have tried in my Hyundai and a Dodge rent car and get the same results.  I updated the last 8.0.2.

My iphone 6 connects to the car via bluetooth, the music works good, but the phone calls does not work.  It looks like it is working but doesn't.  I have tried in my Hyundai Sonata and a Dodge Dart rent car and get the same results.  I updated the last 8.0.2.  It worked the first day i had the phone, and then i updated to Ios 8.0.2 and it quit working.
Now when i get in the car, it acts like it is connected and makes the same call it was on after syncing to bluetooth, but it really isn't on a call.  This is happening on both cars.
Does anyone know if this is the phone and i need to take it to Apple or if there is an issue that Apple is working on getting a fix for?
My son in law has the exact same phone as me, we both got the on 10/6, he had a Dodge Dart and his is working via bluetooth.
Someone HELP please, as i consider this a safety issue by not having my calls go to bluetooth.

We had the same problem, but figure out the solution.
You MUST have at least 1 song added to your ITUNE!  After you add a free song, then everything else should work as normal!
    Hope this helps!

  • Why does Siri say she can't take any request and I have to reset my phone so she can work ?

Happens quite often Siri says I am very sorry about this but icant take any request right now please try again and she loads for a 3 minute and the says this I have to reset the phone settings to get it to work but it is getting annoying
I tries turning Siri on and off and also resetting wifi renewing lease etc.

Thanks James, I just tried Siri again and it worked fine on two tests.
Does this Problem happen often? I have had my Iphone5 for about two weeks and this is the first time I have
had the problem. My 3gs used Siri to dial phone numbers or use the address book to dial and I never had a problem with it.
Thanks for posting the system status page.

  • I blocked quite a few different phone numbers awhile ago but when I looked at the blocked numbers today it looks like the same number has been blocked multiple times.  Does anyone know why that is?

I blocked a lot of different numbers awhile ago but when I checked the blocked numbers today it looked like the same numbers were blocked multiple times.  So for example if I blocked phone numbers 555-555-5555, 555-555-5556, and 555-555-5557 on different days it looks like only 555-555-5555 has been blocked 3 different times and I no longer see phone numbers 555-555-5556 or 555-555-5557.  Does anyone know why?

Oh dear, one of those phantom disconnections. You know they are actually so common BT have a specialist department that deals with them. I think they are called Priority Back in Service, there is no actual phone number you can ring them on, you have to call 150 as normal and the customer service team are supposed to raise the issue with them to sort out.
You could contact that Mods but they sometimes take 3 days to reply, especially with it being the weekend.

  • Why does Siri display $! ex-mobile phone $

    Three Questions:
    1.  Every time I ask Siri to dial a number, it displays "$! <ex-mobile phone> $" and then the number.  It also says the word "dollar sign".  I have tried turning off, rebooting, turning back on, etc. to no avail.
    2.  Tried to get Siri to show directions to "home".  Siri says there is no "home address" listed for me, but displays my contact info with my home address blatantly listed.  Again, tried to tell it my home address, didn't stick.
    3.  Every time I ask to dial someone's "mobile" number, it says a mobile number isn't listed....when the number in the contact information is clearly listed as a "mobile" number.
Frustrated with Siri....any help would be great.

I immdiately noticed this bug with Siri; it does NOT work well with custom labels. it's very interesting that some of you have managed to make a custom label with the same NAME as a built-in label, but here's the 'rub'.
internally, what is called 'mobile' is actually called 'cell' in the address card, just that iPhone and Address book etc re-write them to be 'mobile'. it also re-writes 'fax' (internal) to read 'work fax'.
I used a custom label for my family and friends with iPhone:  3 or  4 etc... Siri is so confused it will actually say "i don't know what do with the phone number 415-555-1212 (reading out the actual numbers) just because the label doesn't match one of the few it KNOWs about.
@ robert: apple script is your friend; it's possible to batch change any such things; i had to un-fark my custom  labels with over 1600 contacts of which maybe 50 had these custom fields.
iCloud has the annoyance that they apparently removed the ability to import/export online; the JUST added it in in m.me like a year ago, and it vapoorizes with v1 of iCloud that's really dumb apple.
when i changed my labels to standard-ish labels it seems to work. I actually have a multiply dot (·) in front of my labels to know if they have been 'verified' example:
    · home xxx-xxx-xxx
    · work xxx-xxx-xxxx
    · us cell xxx-xxx-xxxx
    · iphone xxx-xxx-xxxx
though Siri will SAY the labels properly 'home' 'work' 'us cell' it WON'T DIAL them save if you have one 'favoritized' it will figure out that is the one you prefer and won't even ASK about the rest!
    Siri will LITREALLY SAY:
"you have multiple phone numbers for fred jones, home, work, mobile, which would you like to dial".. you say "home" and Siri will respond "there is no HOME number listed for Fred Jones" even though Siri JUST SAID there WAS!
    arrrrgh!

  • Need info on whether iCloud and Siri can be disabled on the phone.

Hello all, supposed to receive my phone this week and have read the online manual from cover to cover at least 3 times so I know what questions to ask when I take it into the store to have it activated. I am still confused about iCloud and Siri. I know what Siri is but am not sure about the Cloud.
It seems (the Cloud that is) like something that I don't want to mess with at this stage in my learning of the phone. The manual never really says anything about shutting it off. Is there a way to disable it so it is not running all the time or at all preferably? I won't have a ton of contacts and reminders and such that will use up memory so it really doesn't seem something that I need. If anyone knows how to keep it disabled, I'd appreciate knowing how.
Basically, it is the same with Siri, it is a lot more likely that I will use that service evenutally but I need to learn other things about the phone first (this is my first smartphone by the way). Is there a way to disable this or is it something that is always availalble if you want to use it? Seems like these two apps would use battery life and the Cloud would use data as well as it is checking for alerts to all your other apps. I have no other apple products that I need to sync too.
Any information you can offer would be a great help to me and thanks in advance,\
    Mike

Thanks for a great answer. As for iCloud, if I would choose to leave it on, does it access the web all the time the phone is on or just when I change something on the phone? I am worried about using too much data and going over the 2GB in my plan and having to pay for more. I don't plan on using the web much unless I have wifi available and am just concerned that the iCloud app will constanting be connecting to something online ( a server I guess) and that will be used against my data?? You can tell that I never had a smart phone before and am not sure how much time online 2GB is. Everyone says it is plenty of data unless you are streaming a lot of stuff (don't plan on that unless with wifi). If you can understand what I am trying to ask and have anymore advice, I'd appreciate another reply. Thanks again for your first reply and have an awesome day.
    Mike
In settings there is an option to turn iCloud backup on or off...if you turn it on it will automatically back up certain things only when the iPhone is plugged in, locked, and connected to wifi. So as far as iCloud (backup) goes, you don't have to worry about it using  your data plan. If I'm not mistaken, the only time you would have to worry about that is if you choose to stream from your iCloud account while on the 3G network versus waiting until you are on wifi.

Wich kind of information are exchanged with Apple'server by using Siri?
The only thing sent to Apple is the Audio of your request. It decodes the audio to usable instructions and sends them back to the Phone to perform the desired tasks.  The Phone then processes that task itself.

If I accept to use siri does it mean that I consent/allow apple to download information or files from my i-pad or i-phone, e.g. my agenda, my contacts or my photos ?
The Siri process on your phone needs access to your contacts, agenda, maybe Photos, but it does not transmit any of this to Apple. It uses it in your Phone. Again the only thing sent to Apple is the Audio file for decoding.
And yes the keep the Audio file for Service improvement purposes but is made annonymous after a certain amount of time.

  • HT204389 can i use siri in hong kong if the phone is serviced through us?

i am in hong kong-- does siri work hereif i have verizon acct in us?

It makes sense, marklyn9063. If you are using a tablet overseas with WiFi, you will be able to access Verizon Messages without incurring roaming charges. However, in order to receive messages, you must have an active phone number.

  • How does Internet access work once I leave home?

Do I need to subscribe to a wireless broadband deal- such as BT's Openzone- in order to access the Internet on my macBook when I'm away from home ... or can I depend on dialling my ISP via a phone socket? How does Internet access work once I leave home?

BT Openzone looks a lot like T-Mobile wireless here in the States. I've got a T-Mobile account and password. When I go into a location that has TM, I open up my MacBook and look under my AirPort menu icon to select the TM network. Then I enter my account name and password and go.
Of course TM isn't everywhere, just as BT's service isn't. When I'm in a location that doesn't have it, how I connect depends on what does exist. I always travel with an ethernet cable because many hotels don't have wireless but do have ethernet connections. I've not had to resort to modem service is more than 5 years.
