Does SQL Developer Data Modeler fit-in??

Hi Everyone,
Wish you happy new year 2011.
Does SQL Developer Data Modeler support conceptual, logical and physical in our modeling or only logical and physical?
We all use Erwin for modeling. Erwin works without database repository storing models in desktop folders and provide additional reporting. I find some place SQL Developer Data Modeler talked about repository need.
Does SQL Developer Data Modeler store the models in local/network folders instead of Database server?
What are the functions need database based repository to work with SQL Developer Data Modeler?
We are thinking of using SQL Developer Data Modeler for our conceptual, Logical, and data dictionary need. Will it help in our need?
Do we need to face any surprises on using SQL Developer Data Modeler for our need?
Thanks in sharing your experience and helping me out.

1) Do we need to have Oracle database at back end to work with SQL Developer Data Modeler? No, Data Modeler use Oracle database only if you create reporting repository.
Data Modeler is free, you need database license only if you want to log service request
2) Will SQL Developer Data Modeler create any tables (as backend repository ) in Oracle database to store Model details? no
3) Do we need to create reporting schema in backend oracle database to generate reports of SQL Developer Data Modeler's items such as Entity/attributes etc?no, reports can be created out of current loaded design. However having reporting repository will give you additional benefits - history (reports can be generated for every snapshot of your designs there) and multi-user usage, you can create your own reports
4) Do we to use SQL Developer Data Modeler reverse engineer from DB2, SqlServer, Terra data etc?Data Modeler has full support for Oracle, DB2/390, DB2/UDB(LUW) and MS SQL Server. Reverse engineering from other databases (including Terra Data) is at generic JDBC level - you'll get some and some will be missing (no check constraints for example).

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler API

    Hi,
My team is responsible for taking requests from a development team, creating a database change script, and updating the data model. We are trying to transition away from Designer but have been using some of the API integration to automate tasks through a custom database change request tool. This allowed the developers to fill out some fields for a the new table they wanted and my team would push a button to have all the updates sent to the data model in Designer.
My question is, does SQL Developer Data Modeler have anything like this? If so, is there some documentation?
    Thanks
    Justin

Very limited documentation is available in
    C:\Program Files (x86)\datamodeler\datamodeler\xmlmetadata\doc\index.html

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler scripting

    Hi,
I'm looking for a new modeling software for my company. SQL Developer Data Modeler (SDDM) has many features that fit my requirements. But there are some things that I'm not sure can be done. I work mostly with Oracle databases but still need to support some legacy and non-sql databases. Please look at problems below and tell me if and how those things can be achieved. Any suggestions for alternative solutions are welcome too.
    1) I need to be able process Database Model from command line without human intervention and starting any GUI applications, for example generate DDL script form the model. Does SDDM have any interface for that?
    2) I want to be able to export Database Model into a file in a custom (legacy) format.
    3) SDDM stores database description in xml files. Is xml format defined anywhere? Are xsd schema files availabe?
    4) Is there a SDK available that would allow reading SDDM Database Model into a custom application for further processing?
    5) Is there any Java library available that parses Oracle-11-compatible SQL and PL/SQL?
    Thank you in advance

    Hi Kevin,
thanks for sharing your thoughts. There will be much more advanced find/search facilities in next version of Data Modeler and scripts also will be covered.

  • Foreign key Mapping based on Data - in SQL Developer Data modeler

    Team
Do SQL Developer Data modeler supports Foreign Key mapping based on the Data in the Schema rather defined at the DDL ? For e.g if we implement a Objects Relation ship mapping in Data base, we don't define Foreign keys at table creation.
Toad does this feature through "AUTOMATIC FOREIGN KEYS MAPPING IN TOAD DATA MODELER" more info at (http://toadworld.com/Blogs/tabid/67/EntryId/905/Automatic-Foreign-Keys-Mapping-in-Toad-Data-Modeler.aspx)
any one know how to implement through some scripts also helps me
    Regards
    Raj

If you have table PKs defined and the candidate columns match those PK columns, then you can use the Discover Foreign Keys utility. Right mouse over the relational model name (node) in the left browser. It is about half way down the menu. I did a blog post about it last week on kentgraziano.com.

  • Import / Export MySQL database in SQL Developer Data Modeler

    Hello,
I have version 3.1.2.704 of SQL Developer Data Modeler and version 3.2.09 of SQL Developer installed.
When I´m adding a new connection in SQL Developer, I can choose the MySQL tab an create a connection to a MySQL database.
The connection test was successful and I can see all tables.
I use the same JDBC driver for SQL Developer and SQL Developer Data Modeler (mysql-connector-java-5.0.4-bin.jar).
    But there are two problems.
    1. First there is an problem when I want to import from a MySQL database (SQL Developer -> File -> DataModeler -> Import -> DataDictionary).
After choosing the MySQL connection and pressing the next button an error occurs: CONNECTION_TYPE
    What is the reason?
    2. In SQL Developer Data Modeler I have not the CONNECTION_TYPE problem. But when I want to export DDL, there is no MySQL type selectable, although there is working connection to the MySQL Database. It´s the same in SQL Developer.
    What is the reason?

    Hi,
Data Modeler does not explicitly support import from MySQL databases, although you can use a JDBC connection to do this.
Philip described how to set this up in forum message How to connect mySQL for reverve engineering
There is no MySQL tab in Data Modeler - you should use "JDBC-ODBC Bridge" - "other third party Driver".
    Set URL like : jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/database_name
driver Class: com.mysql.jdbc.DriverAlso Data Modeler does not support generation of DDL for MySQL.

  • "SQL Developer" vs. "SQL Developer Data Modeler"

    Hi Everybody!
I'm using SQL Developer and I miss functionalities like re-engeneering of ER Models. As far as I know this is what the "SQL Developer Data Modeler" does. So my question is: Is the "SQL Developer Data Modeler" a complete replacement for "SQL Developer" or do I need both?
    thank you in advance

Whoooops, sorry, I replied in the wrong thread -.-
My reply was meant to be in the thread about Designer EA2 and the non-versioned repository import (Import repository from Designer concerning non-versioned applications (EA2)

Everything works fine on an XP pc.
I have installed this on Windows server 2003.

  • Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler start up error

    Hi All,
I just downloaded Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler (2.0.0.57.0) [Released 1 July 2009] by selecting the option "Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler for Windows (This zip file includes the JRE)"
After I installed the same and tried to run it by clicking datamodeler.exe, I get the following error message
"unable to create an instance of the Java virtual machine located at path:..\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll"
On the same machine I can successfuly run the Oracle SQL Develper with no errors. My machine is having Windows XP Professional SP3.
Any ideas? If there was a problem with Java, than the Oracle SQL Developer should also not run. But as stated it runs with out any error but the Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler gives the above error.
    Regards,
    JAA149

1 - The above problem has nothing to do with the memmory. I tried on a 400 MB RAM, 900 MB RAM, 1.5 MB RAM & 2 MB RAM with the same arror.
"unable to create an instance of the Java virtual machine located at path:..\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll"
    http://i30.tinypic.com/9vkwf6.jpg
    2 - There are two "datamodeler.exe: files
    One is at D:\datamodeler\datamodeler.exe
    2nd is at D:\datamodeler\bin\datamodeler.exe
The same error occurs with both the files.
3 - The Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler version is "Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler (2.0.0.57.0) [Released 1 July 2009]" and the file I downloaded is "Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler for Windows (This zip file includes the JRE) - (57M)"
    If I look in "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\README.txt" I find
"Java(TM) Platform, Standard Edition Runtime Environment Version 6"
    If I run "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\javacpl.exe" I get
    http://i30.tinypic.com/mt8ocn.jpg
    If I run "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\jureg.exe" I get
    http://i28.tinypic.com/30boiyo.jpg
If i check at the control panle add/remove program
    http://i30.tinypic.com/1428tba.jpg
If I go to "http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp" and download "jre-6u16-windows-i586-s.exe" and run it.
If I go to "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6" I find the same files as in "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre"
I am able to run Oracle SQL Developer with out any kind of error let alone the above one. But with Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler I get the above mentioned error no matter what I try.
As the error states "unable to create an instance of the Java virtual machine located at path:..\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll". The file "jvm.dll" is located at two places. One at "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll" and the second at "D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\server\jvm.dll"
A similiar problem occurs with JDeveloper with the fllowing solution
    http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=506339&start=0&tstart=0
    Which states the following
    "hello!
in the problem with JDeveloper i have a solution. The jdk have a file jvm.dll in the path: jdk/jre/bin/client/jvm.dll this is the problem ... now in the path:jdk/jre/bin/client/ojvm has a file with the same name if you copy and paste this file to the another path, now its works fine your Jdeveloper.
Jdeveloper use two files to jvm.dll to work one in the folder /client and other in /server copy the same file to the two locations for precaution
    for me work fine thanks..."
I tried to do the same (Copy from client folder to server folder)
    D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll
    COPIED THIS FILE TO
    D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\server\jvm.dll
Nada. So I reversed it (copied from server folder to client folder)
    D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\server\jvm.dll
    COPIED THIS FILE TO
    D:\datamodeler\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll
Does not work. So I tried another solution stated at the same forum entry
    "Well,
i solved the problem by this way :
    <SQLDEVELOPER>/jdev/bin/ide.conf
In this file, change this line :
    AddVMOption -Xmx512M
    by
    AddVMOption -Xmx256M
Now, the executable is lauching correctly. No more errors with Java Virtual Machine.
But is it a good thing to solve it like that ?"
But the ide.conf file is only at "D:\sqldeveloper\ide\bin\ide.conf" which is for the SQL Developer and not the SQl Developer Data Modeler
Correct me if I am wrong but
JRE = Java Run Time Envoirment
    JDK = Java Development Kit
And Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler needs JRE and not JDK. In any case I download JDK
jdk-6u14-javafx-1_2-windows-i586.exe (121,306 KB) and installed it but no succcess.
I tried every thing except completely re-install my whole PC.
Any help will be much appreciated.
    Cordially,
    Jawad

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler - integration with subversion

I just discovered the release of SQL Developer Data modeler, and found this to be very interesting.
We are still using Oracle Designer for database design, but we are looking for a replacement (for several reasons).
    My question is quite simple:
Given that the modeler uses a filebased repository, and also given that we have several developers potentially working on a data-model at the same time, how does Data Modeler integrate with subversion for source control etc.?
Can the repository itself be under source control, and checked in/out directly from Data Modeler?
Or will only the output files be candidates for version/source control?
Let me admit right away that I have not read much of the data modeler docs, and I have also not downloaded/installed it (yet), but does anyone have pointers to docs on this , or general input/knowledge around it.
On a side note, I must say that it puzzles me that a company like Oracle, that delivers one of the best databases doesn't use its database engine to host the repository, but instead chooses to go for files (I assume xml) "scattered all over the place"....
Well, I guess they a have a reason for it..
    Anyway:
Sql Developer Data Modeler and Subversion anyone?
    Jens

    Hi Jens,
It's early days and the initial implementation is indeed file based. Though I'd say not xml files "all over the place", but in ordered folders. Yes, as a database company it does make sense that we'd have a repository for managing and versioning metadata. However the tool supports Oracle and other databases and many companies use open source version control tools, such as Subversion and so anyone using the Data Modeler today can use it with Subversion regardless of the database they are designing for.
We do plan to have a repository, but in the 6+ months of the early adopter program found that many of the early adopters were happy to place the files under source code control using Subversion and in so doing also managed the multi-user development.
Integrated Subversion support is planned for a future release.

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler Definitions

I am brand new to SQL Developer Data Modeler, but not new to modeling (I've used Rational Rose for 8 years). Can someone point me to a list of definitions of the terms SQL Developer Data Modeler uses throughout its interface? I have poured through all of the help documentation only to find no such documentation.
    Thank you in advance!

Looks like you've run in something similar
Re: Datatypes changing on their own
Is column data type changing to Audio just on click of the column in Table properties dialog or you are doing something prior (add column, press Shift ...) ? Are you using domains ? Do you save model after importing or you trying to modify it right after import ?

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler, Repository or file based?

As announced, in a next release of SQL Developer Data Modeler it wil be repository based. Ok that is nice. But what does it mean for the current possibility to store your work in files. Will the possibility to store in files be supported in new releases when also a Repository is available?

Will the possibility to store in files be supported in new releases we are not going to remove that run and use aspect of the tool.

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler - MAC Version 2.0.0 Build 570 - Issues

    In no particular order
    - The Help, About box displays a different version information set then the SQL Developer Data Modeler, About SQl Developer Data Modeler.
    - Not able to move any portion of the connection between entities. Thus there is no current way to align the lines as wanted.
    - There is no way to scroll all the way to the right side if you have more then approximately 5 entities horizontally.
    - Open SQl Developer data Modeler, Click on File, Open, select an XML file and a dialog box is displayed.
    - The checkbox needs to be moved to the right as it is partially cut off.
    - the text next to the checkbox is cutoff and only displays "Don't show this dialog agai".
    - Printing Diagrams does not print correctly unless you have the entities displayed such that you can "read" them. If you have diminished the display so that you are not able to see the table or
field names then the Print Diagrams does not display the entity or field names.
    - File, Recent Designs, does not retain the last or any design having been opened and/or saved.
    - VarChar2 is not a displayed data type for Oracle 10G.
    - There does not appear to be a way to create a set of fields which you would like to have added quickly and easily to selected tables.
    - DDL Editor displays the Macintosh HD. It should display my User Directory

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler in SolarisX86

I am experimenting with Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler (3.0.0) Build 653 in SolarisX86; Where can I find a good training video for the product. - Thanks!

I have grouped all the videos and demonstrations under the Online Demonstrations page, which you can get to from the Learn More tab (following the previous link given). There is an hour long Overview webcast, which may be the most useful when getting to know the product. An hour can be a bit tedious online, so there are quite a few shorter pieces. If you're starting out, it may be worth watching the hour presentation, as it does a full product overview. (it is an .exe though, so if you're not on Windows, you can watch the shorter demos online using your browser.)

  • Journal tables in SQL Developer Data Modeler

In my database I use journal tables, which can be generated automatically by Oracle Designer.
Now that I'm trying to start using SQL Developer Data Modeler, I can't find how to make journal tables with it.
Does anyone know whether Data Modeler supports journal tables or not? And if it does, how can I generate one?

No automatic generation you have to create them manually - use copy/paste to speed up the process.

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler: free of licensing costs like SQL Developer?

    Sue and SQL Developer Team,
At what release did Data Modeler become free? And by "free" does this mean free for development only? Or free of cost for any and all production use? From what I recall, early releases of Data Modeler were "free" to download but required for-pay licensing to use.
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/datamodeler/overview/index.html
"SQL Developer Data Modeler is a free data modeling and design tool..."
If there is a license fee for Data Modeler, then the above statement would be as misleading as one like the following:
"Oracle Enterprise 11g is a free database..."
Free to download, yes. Not free for production usage.

Evidently the answer is "yes" this time. Free as in free of licensing costs:
