Does Time Machine Back Up Attached External Drives?

If you have an external HD connected to Mac will Time Machine back this up also?

I have a first generation Airport Extreme and the new update allows me to use a disk attached to it as a Time Machine backup drive.
Should also work on a Time Capsule.

  • Does Time Machine require a dedicated external drive, or can it include other files?

After a misplaced library file, I'm having problems restoring some of the content on my MacBook Pro. I have a Time Machine backup on an external drive, but the drive also includes lots of other files that I want to exclude from the restore process. I'm concerned whether the Migration Assistant will scoop up everything on the drive.
The laptop is still running on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 for specific reasons (although I have Lion 10.7.5 on my iMac). I presume Time Machine and the Migration Assistant are the same on both operating systems -- but I'd better ask here first.
Thanks for any help with this question.

    Another good idea. Thanks, FatMac!
For a long time, I was leery of putting too much stuff on one drive. It breaks, and you lose everything. But you're right -- the prices allow for even two 3TB externals that could manage backups of backups for paranoid types like me. And that's in addition to the internal drive.
Welcome to paranoidville. Staples has been selling Toshiba Canvio 3 TB externals for $120 and even though they must have green drives inside because they run a lot cooler than Seagates (of course they do, also, have ventilation), being fed from an SSD I've seen transfer rates of 130+MB/s connected to USB 3.0 ports. I have one set up with 4 partitions and maintain a rolling backup of the boot disk with BU dates recorded for each partition. A second Toshiba has a single periodic BU of the Mac Pro as well as a bootable backup of the rMBP and what passes for a Windows 8 backup of a Lenovo laptop. A third has the rMBP TM partition and a series of rMBP backups (that was originally used for testing and using the rMBP for a week without touching the rMBP SSD in case there was an image retention problem or some other issue, since the internal SSD can't be securely erased and I had 14 days to simply return it).
You can never be too rich, too thin or too backed up.

  • Time machine back up other external drive?

    Hi folks,
My HD is filling up fast.  What I need to know is if I move say, my music and photos to an external drive, will time machine back up the music and photos when they reside on the external drive?  I have time machine running on an external drive dedicated to time machine.  I'm using OX Mavericks.
    Thanks,
    Steve

Mine is set up similar.  I use TIME MACHINE as a back up and then my redundant back up is to a 2 terabyte USB External, so now I have everything backed up twice.

  • Does Time Machine back up USB Flash Drive?

I have a 128GB USB Flash Drive. The contents of this flash drive was restored from a previous external SSD (used as storage and has died on me).
Now I would like my Time Machine to backup both my MacAir and my USB Flash Drive.
    My First Concern is
So when I plug in my USB Flash Drive, it appears in the Exclude List.
However, after I remove the USB Flash Drive from the exclude list and click on Save.
I start to Back Up using Time Machine.
Does it mean that time machine will back up my USB Flash Drive for this One Time?
Because when I open up the Time Machine preference, the USB Flash Drive re-appears in the Exclude List again.
    Second Concern
When I open the HDD I use for Time Machine, I noticed that the latest backup consist of both my MacAir
and the name of my Previous External SSD (instead of my current USB Flash Drive).
I am wondering if Time Machine recognise my current USB Flash Drive as my previous external SSD
since I restored my contents from there.
So is my USB Flash Drive really backed up (just that Time Machine recognise it as my previous external SSD)?
Hope someone can share their experience and advice on this.
(Please do not recommend other app like Carbon Copy Cloner, as I already plan to use the CCC Trial.)
    Thank you to all.

What is the format of the volume on the flash drive? It's shown in the Finder Info window.

  • TIme Machine backing up an External Drive

    hello
a problem that is really vexing me
I had a 500gb ext hardrive for my itunes and then a 1TB harddrive for my time machine, both plugged in at all times, to my macbook
due to the iTunes drive getting full I got a new 1TB drive for that (not the same as Time Machine one as I need one that was USB powered for travelling purposes)
obvioulsy I moved to 2TB drive for time machine then
here is where the problem started, I was told my Time Machine the 2TB needed to be reformatted which was fair enough, so that is not MS-DOS extended (journaled) it immediately went about backing up my macbook straight away
but it did not touch my iTunes 1TB drive
I checked the option of "do not back up" in preferences and made sure the 1TB drive WAS NOT on the that list
then to no avail, for days now
    it isn't being backed up
    what is the mofo problem?
I did check 1TB drive and that is formatted as MS_DOS (Fat) - is that the issue, I assume time machine only backs up actual digital information
or does it not recognise that format?
    please advise

  • Does time machine back up second drives

I have a second drive installed in my MacBook Pro for document storage, etc.  I replaced my optical drive with a second drive.  Does Time Machine back up the second drive as well?

Open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences and verify that the drive isn't excluded. Drives in some formats, such as FAT32, can't be backed up by Time Machine.

  • I need to create a second back-up of iPhoto from Time Machine to a separate external drive.  The old iPhoto in TM will not open.  Please help!

I need to create a second back-up of iPhoto from Time Machine to a separate external drive.  The old iPhoto in TM will not open.  Please help!  And thank you!

    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • Can 'Time Machine' back-up other external hard drives

Can 'Time Machine' back-up other external hard drives connected to your mac as well as the mac memory itself?

As Neil says, yes, it can.  But external HDs are excluded by default;  you have to tell Time Machine when you do want to back one up.
See the exclusions box in Time Machine Prefs > Options.
If the drive is shown in black, just select it and click the minus sign at the bottom.
If it's shown in gray, though, it's not formatted for a Mac, and Time Machine can't back it up (and you can't remove it).

  • Does Time Machine back up other users?

My wife and I share the same computer. We each have our own user accounts. Does Time Machine back up both accounts? It appears that the amount of disk space used on the computer is about equal to the amount on the external hard drive that I use for backup. So I am assuming that both users are backed up in case of a crash. I hope this is the case! Sorry that this is slightly off topic.
    Lou

Yes Time Machine backs up your entire hard drive.

  • Does Time Machine back up iPhoto pix?

Does Time Machine back up the contents of iPhoto? If so, how do I access it?
    Thanks.

    1. Yes, unless it was told not to; if the library is on an external drive, that drive needs to have been removed from the exclusion list.
    2. Restore the library, and then open it in iPhoto.

  • Does Time Machine back up my Bookmarks, Favourites, my tool bar etc  and that sort of thing ?

I'm backing up my Macbook Pro on Time Machine prior to installing Snow Leopard.  Does Time Machine back up things like my internet bookmarks, as well as my Toolbar ones?  If not, what should I do?

It backs up everything. If you were to use it with Migration Assistant after a clean install, it should bring everything back. If you have an external drive though, a clone of the existing drive before a major upgrade is always a good idea. That way you could easily go back to exactly what you have now if you had a problem. Carbon Copy Cloner is the best solution for that.

  • Errors when transferring my Time Machine backup to an external drive.

    Hello,
I need some help transferring my Time Machine backup to an external drive. Let me explain what happened.
I have a Mac OSX Mountain Lion that was upgraded to Mavericks when the upgrade came out. Prior to upgrading, I've been backing up  WD Passport Mac with the proprietary software "WD Unlocker on it". It worked flawlessly but after upgrading to Mavericks, I decided to backup and noticed that once i inserted the WD Passport, my screen will flicker, windows will close and reappear.
I decided to read up on this and discovered that Mavericks is not compatible with the "WD Unlocker " program on the Passport drive. Since I already have a backup in place, i decided to restore my computer to factory settings and when I attached the Passport drive with my backup on it, My device will see the backup but it will keep spinning for hours without restoring my backup. I decided to read further on this and I got the same Mavericks compatibility conclusion.
I then copied my entire backups.backupdb folder to my Mac desktop and formatted my WD Passport external drive and got rid of the proprietary software "WD Unlocker".. Once this was completed, I then tried to copy my backups.backupdb folder to my external drive within finder. Each time i tried, i get error messages and permission messages. Even when i changed the permission on the backups.backupdb folder to read & write for everyone, i still get the permissions error.
Please helppppp. I have over 500gb of vital data in my backup.
    Thank you.

Since you don't really have a question, I will give you a very broad information source for the next time you have a Time Machine question.
Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Oh, you cannot use a computer whose only disk drive is the target of a an OS X cloning operation regardless of what software is used for the clone. You can, however, use the source drive except if you try to clone using Disk Utility.

  • Does time machine back up the data in the PC part of my intel MacBook?

I'm backing up my MacBook to an external hadr drive using Time Machine in the apple part of my partioned MacBook.
Does time machine back up the data in the PC part of my intel MacBook at the same time or do I have to do a separate backup for it? Does it have to be on a different external hard drive?

TM only backs up the BSD portion of your HD.
If you partition your external HD you can have a FAT32 or NTFS partition for Winders and another for HFS+.
Naturally if you choose to repartition the drive, you should backup everything on it or you may lose it.
