Download and then open PDFs with Preview instead of viewing PDFs within Safari

hello, I am running Safari 6.0.2 and since this update PDF files are automatically opened within Safari. This seems to be a new feature. In my older version of Safari whenever I clicked a pdf it was downloaded to my "Downloads" folder and then automatically opened with Preview. The option open "safe" files after downloading in Safari -> Preferences -> General is ticked. So as soon as a download a PDF file it should automatically be opened with Preview. However, I cannot figure out how to download a PDF file from a google link. I googled and people suggested to use alt + mouse click on the google search result link to download the PDF. However, whenever I tried this instead of downlading the PDF file it downloads a .html file which is then apparently not opened. Also using the option "download linked file" or "download linked file as" only downloads a url.html file and not the PDF. I searched and searched for any possible solutions but cannot find any. I am really suprised that no one has yet really complained about that. Any ideas of how to fix that problem?

I had a similar probem after updating to the newest Safari -- and I posted that question on the forum this morning.  Like you, I didn't have any adobe plug-ins.  then I read another post that made sense:
find a pdf document that you know opens in Preview. Do a command-I on that document's icon.  Then you'll see 1/2 way down an item that says "open with Preview" - click on the arrow beside that, then beside it you'll see "use this application to open all documents like this one"  Under that, you'll see "change all" -- and it will change all pdfs to automatically open with Preview instead of Adobe. From then on Safari worked perfectly
Then I wondered why I didn't have the Adobe plug-in that people were telling me to disable - so I downloaded Adobe Reader again - looked in the library and sure enough there was the plug-in - so I went ahead and disabled the Adobe pdf plug-in (by dumping it in the trash).
so far so good -- first time that Safari 6.02 has worked for me since I installed it.

On the fourth the file is placed in "downloads" and then opens in a separate tab on the desktop(not inside the application).  Any ideas on settings that might be causing this? It happens whether the application starts in IE11, Google Chrome or Firefox.
This happens whether the "client" signs in over the internet or directly to the local host server.
    Thanks in advance

I just created a new iPhoto library with holding the option key down and then opening iPhoto with version 7.1.5.  I changed the name of the first library to iPhoto library 1 and now I all my photos are gone.  My operating system is Mavericks.

launch iPhoto wile holding down the option key and select the original library - when you create a new library of course it is empty
And you seriously need to backup your iPhoto library and purchase and install iPhoto '11 version 9.5.x from the App store and download and run the iPhoto library upgraded \then run the new iPhoto - 7.1.5 is not fully compatible with Mavericks

PS you also need to update your profile - it states that you have OS X 10.6.8

  • Download PDF files instead of viewing them within Safari?

I would like to automatically download PDF files instead of having to view them within Safari.
I have disabled Acrobat as the default reader and now Safari has switched to using Preview. However, I cannot find a way to also disable Preview to allow the PDF file to be downloaded instead of displayed within a Safari window.
Anyone have any ideas on how to do this seemingly simple task?

It's amazing to me that simply asking Safari to default to auto download a PDF is so arcane. It's incredible that Apple doesn't have a Safari preference for this very simple action!
The Terminal and Onyx methods recommended above are just ways of accessing a setting for Safari that Apple hasn't added to Safari Preferences. As I understand it, settings like this are built into Safari - they just aren't readily user-accessible. This is why programs like Onyx and Safari Enhancer exist, to open up "hidden" features and settings.
I imagine Apple's developers debate these things, trying to decide what would be simpler to leave out to avoid complexity and what confusion (but allow third-party or Terminal methods to access) and which would be better added to the regular Preferences settings.
Since this is a feature you'd like to see in Safari Preferences, I'd recommend submitting this as feedback to Apple.
In the meantime, though, I'd consider it a good thing that there are built-in ways to get the setting that you prefer. Personally, I don't find the default settings such a hindrance. They're intended to help the "average" user (the new Mac user, the non-technical user, etc.) who wants a PDF file to just open, without having to understand how to work with it. For the more savvy user, there are multiple methods of downloading and/or opening PDFs. I'm rather like you - I prefer to download PDFs (in which case I use the Control-click method if I notice the link is to a PDF) or sometimes I allow the PDF to open in Safari, then Control-click on the open PDF and choose the option to open in Acrobat Reader. I find the latter method even smoother than downloading and then opening, in fact. If I decide it's a file I want to keep, I save it to my hard drive; otherwise I just close it.

  • HT1725 I downloaded an album from itunes and only half of the songs have downloaded. The rest of the songs keep trying to download and then come up with an error saying they cannot download at this time. I'm not sure what the issue is.

I downloaded an album from itunes and only half of the songs have downloaded. The rest keep trying to download, but I keep getting a message that says, "Song cannot be downloaded at this time. Do you want to retry or be done." Each time I retry, the same thing happens. They will not download. I have restarted my phone and the same problem remains.

Other people have been having similar problems with songs over a number of days.
Depending upon what country that you are in (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) then try deleting it from your iTunes library and redownload it via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes : re-downloading.
If you aren't in a country where you can re-download music or if it re-downloads in the same state then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find that song and use the 'Report a Problem' link.

  • When I click on a icon it pauses and then opens up tabs instead of just opening up the icon? How can I get it to go back to working the way it used to? Thank you!!!

When i click on an icon it holds it down for a long time and then opens up different tabs instead of just opening up the icon

By "tabs", do you mean something like this -
If that is what you see, then you may be right-clicking on the icon instead of left-clicking on it.
Right-clicking or Control-clicking on an icon in the Dock will bring up a menu like that (it is a contextual menu, so its content varies a bit from program to program).
Usually, it is necessary to only click an icon in the Dock once in order to start up the program (if it has been quitted) or make it active (if it has not been quitted).

  • How to NOT open pdfs in Safari window.

    Hi,
How can I set Safari to download pdfs and not have them automatically open within Safari windows.
Yes, I  know that I can right click and save... but one does not always know that a link is a pdf in the first place.
I have just got a new iMac two days ago and In the past, on my previous iMac,  I was able to open Terminal and type:
defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool YES .... hit return, quit Terminal and restart Safari.
But I tried that  - and still pdfs display in Safari's window..... maybe it is because I was running a slightly older version of Safari on  my last Mac.... currently I am using Safari 5.1
I have search this forum and others but  after many hours, I cannot find  the answer..... anyone any ideas?
    Regards
    Derro

Thanks for that and yes I am aware of  that option, however  that is very inconvenient and means  that one has to look at the Status bar EVERY time before you click on a link in oorder to determine if it is a link or a pdf..... alll very very  tiresome indeed.
What one is looking for is that links will just open as expected and that if, IF , it happens to be a pdf link, that it will download it to the desktop ( or elsewhere) and then open itself in Preview....
    Any other ideas....
    Regards

    Hi Gary,
I have seen this issue occur with users who have this registry setting missing or have improper permissions.
When you double click the attachment to launch the pdf it is saved and opened from the temporary folder unless saved specifically to a location.
If you dont have the below mentioned registry key or improper permissions then attachments fail to open.
Please  heck if the following reg key exists:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Security
    or
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Security
    Value Name: OutlookSecureTempFolder
If the value exists, and if the value contains a valid path, Outlook 2010 uses that location for its temporary files.
If the registry value does not exist, or if the value points to an invalid location, Outlook 2010, Outlook 2007, or Outlook 2003 creates a new subdirectory under the Temporary Internet Files directory and then puts the temporary file in the new subdirectory. The name of the new subdirectory is unknown and is randomly generated, depending on your version of Outlook.
    Please check the following key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Security
Note the location for: OutlookSecureTempFolder key
Check if the same folder exists in the following location and if not create a corresponding folder in the location on C:\Users\<User account name>\Appdata\Local\Software\Microsoft\Windows\......

  • How to open a pdf file and then attach it with images

I am new to Indesign Server.
I'm currently working on a pdf.
I have a white blank pdf template.
that I want to attach/glue it with images.
How to open a pdf file and then attach it with images.
    Please, help me.
    Thanks.

First step would be to make yourself familiar with InDesign desktop version.
Whatever you intend to achieve, do it there manually. (see regular app docs or forums)
Then try to automate your steps with scripting (see scripting docs or forum)
If you can do it with a script in the desktop version, that script will likely also run in ID Server. (see server forum).
If you can specify missing features not achievable thru scripting or manual use, reconsider to write a plugin (this forum).
A seasoned C++ programmer will need a few months to learn the basics, wade thru tons of documentation etc. Alternatively consider to hire a consultant to do the development work for you.

  • Opening PDFs with Preview instead of Acrobat within Safari

I much prefer to use Preview for downloaded PDFs than have Acrobat open PDFs in Safari. How can I switch back to Preview once I have installed Acrobat 7?
    Thanks inadvance!

PDF Browser Plug-in is a good alternative for viewing PDF files accessed via a web page. You can save or print from the pdf page. I've used it for a couple of years now, and IMO is a viable alternative to Preview, especially in quickly accessing the information within Safari.
There is no charge for the plug-in if used for non-commercial purposes.

  • Difference between opening PDF within IE with pressing SHIFT key and without SHIFT key

    Hi,
I want to know when we open a PDF file within Internet Explorer it is using ActiveX control AcroPDF.dll behind the scene.
Now If I open PDF within IE with keep pressing SHIFT key the behavior is different then without pressing SHIFT key?
Is AcroPDF.dll behaves differently in this situation?
    Thanks,

I've saved two files on my desktop:
    f1040.pdf - downloaded from www.irs.gov - 187 KB
    afmod07.2.1g.pdf - downloaded from my intranet - 1,04MB
I've powered off my PC and restarted for each file. I've opened files with double-click on them. I've encountered the same problem, when double-clicked on files in task manager two Acrord32.exe appeared, the PC was doing anything for about 10 second, after that I've encountered no activity in task manager (numbers not vary) for other 10 seconds (like freeze) and after that other about 10 seconds of loading. So after about 30 seconds the file opens with stand-alone Acrobat Reader (11.0.10).
If I retry now (after the first slow startup "of the day") the file opens in 2-3 seconds.
    So:
    - first open of the day or rebooting PC: 30-45 seconds
    - second open of the file: 2-3 seconds
This is happening only with PDFs with forms.

  • I have Adobe Reader XI but I can not read a pdf online, I must save it and then open.  This never happened before.

The system attempts to download the pdf, but it is a dark grey screen.  I can save this as a file and then open it using Adobe.  Why two steps?  I should be able to read the first one.  This is extremely annoying.
