Download updates from the app store

I've bought my brother's old (2009) imac and am trying to update from the app store. Although I'm logged in via my account in the app store sign-in dialogue box has his account name greyed out. The only option I have is to enter his password or cancel. How do I remove his name and replace it with mine? Thanks.

The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. If you don't have the media, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able toauthorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.

  • Sign in to download update from the app store

When I run a software update the app store opens. To execute the update you have to log into the app store with your Apple ID. The sign-in screen defaults to the previous owners email address which I cannot change, even if I sign in from the 'Store' menu with my own Apple ID. How do I resolve this?

    Anja2013,
my MacBook Pro was also previously owned by someone else. When I bought it, the previous owner had Mountain Lion installed on it, and his Apple ID was associated with the App Store on my MacBook Pro. Because he had purchased Mountain Lion from the App Store, he didn’t realize that according to Mountain Lion’s software license agreement, that that copy of Mountain Lion was non-transferable. Since my MacBook Pro model originally came with Snow Leopard, I reïnstalled Snow Leopard from the model-specific Install DVD, and then ran Software Update. Once Software Update had finished, the App Store was no longer associated with my MacBook Pro’s previous owner.
If no one else can suggest a simpler alternative, this “nuclear option” remains a (terribly inconvenient) possiblity: back up your MacBook Pro’s contents, reïnstall the OS that your MacBook Pro originally came with, run Software Update to get it to at least Snow Leopard 10.6.8 (if necessary), open the App Store to exclusively associate your MacBook Pro with your Apple ID, redownload Mavericks from the App Store, reïnstall Mavericks, and restore from your backup. I hope that someone else can suggest a much easier method to you!

  • I have recently update my Final Cut Pro X to Final Cut Pro X 10.1. I downloaded the update from the app store. Now every time I open Final Cut it crashes almost instantly. What can I do

I have recently update my Final Cut Pro X to Final Cut Pro X 10.1. I downloaded the update from the app store. Now every time I open Final Cut it crashes almost instantly. What can I do?- I really need help!

It sounds as though you have a corrupt project - or possibly a file within an event that is causing the application to crash.
Quit FCP X, then move your projects and events (if you have any) to new folders so that FCP X doesn't find them, then relaunch the application. If it launches OK, there's a very good chance one of your projects or events is causing the problem.
Quit the app again, then move one event or project at a time back to the original folder and launch FCP X again - keep going until you find the cause.

Do you see two versions of iMovie in your Application folder?
You can drag the icons out of the dock and then drag what you want back to the dock from the Application folder.

  • Why cant i buy download anything from the app store after the new ios7 update?

Why cant I download anything from the app store after updating to the ios7.02 system?

Do you have a song or podcast in iTunes that did not finish downloading? If you do - finish that one first. The apps will not update until that download is complete.
If that doesn't do it - sign out of your account - Settings>Store>Apple ID - sign out. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button. Go back to Settings>Store>Sign in and sign in again and see if you can tap on one app and start the download.

  • How do you clear completed updates from the app store after downloading is complete?

How do you clear completed updates from the app store after downloading is complete on iOS 7.0.2?

You don't. It's how things are done now, likely to accommodate those that have auto update turned on.  IT's been said that the updates will just drop off after a period of time but  time will tell on that.

  • How do I remove unwanted updates from the App Store?

How do I remove unwanted updates from the App Store? So you understand better what I'm referring to:
I have the App Store icon in the Dock. When there's an update a red number appears on said icon. Well, I went to check on the updates and it's for 4 different applications I either no longer have or use. One of them is an update for Lion OS users. I'm still on Snow Leopard, so it doesn't even apply to me.
So there they sit... I'm not going to download the updates... so how do I get rid of them?

    Hi Andy ..
    no longer have or use
If there are updates available for apps you have deleted, try this.
    Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore
Move the Cache.db and Updates files from the com.apple.appstore folder to the Trash.
Empty the Trash, restart your Mac.
For any apps you still have installed but do not use, the updates will still be available from the Updates top of the App Store window and show on the red badge on the App Store icon in the Dock.

Why am I unable to install some apps updates from the app store? Does anybody know why? I need help!!!

    1.   Are you using the right signing in details?
    2.   Were the Apps originally bought via the App Store?
    3.   Have you checked if they are partially downloaded?

  • TS4185 I have downloaded facetime from the App store and I keep receiving this message - An internal FaceTime error occurred.  There was a problem with FaceTime. You need to quit and open FaceTime again.  Please help!

I have downloaded facetime from the App store and I keep receiving this message - An internal FaceTime error occurred.  There was a problem with FaceTime. You need to quit and open FaceTime again.  Please help!

This error message could result from an incorrect setting for date and time, or an operating system which does not have the latest updates installed.  It's a good idea to have your location setting on automatic.  Turn on the wi fi in your mac for a minute or so, to allow it to automatically search for your present location.  Do this even though you have the correct time Date settings displayed.

  • IPad apps will not update from the App Store

I have apps that need to be updated from the App Store but when I select the "Update" icon, all it does is open the app rather than update it.
i Have tried turning off the iPad and turning back on...doesn't work.
I havent downloaded iOS 8.1 because I know people have experienced issues with it. I have an iPad 2.  Help please!!

    I had this problem
I hit the power button and the round button at the same time and held it until it rebooted
You get the black screen and the apple logo
When that was done I want to the app and update screen and I was able to update my apps
I suggest when you update stay on that screen until they all update
I find it sometimes get stuck updating when I leave the screen as they are updating and do other things, but I could be wrong. It just seems to me that is when it happens.
The reboot works and don't worry you don't lose anything when u reboot it's like shutting down a computer and powering it back up. Everything you had before will still be there.
