Downloading videos instead of opening

Hi all. I am using Safari 5.0.3. I want to download some MPEG videos but when I click on the links a plugin opens to try to play them. I just want to save the files. I can't seem to do the old right-click > "Download linked file as..." as the link actually points to some kind of intermediate web page on which the plug-in and video appear. Any suggestions? so that's the hard way ^^, but you can also alter the plugin behaviour so it downloads automatically for certain filetypes...
If you have Leopard - there should be a Quicktime preference pane in System Preferences, where removing browser plugin support for video/mpg and video/x-mpeg is possible (if I recall correctly).
I have read that you can use that same pane in Snow Leopard, but it's not there as standard, and I haven't tried it yet.
What does work in 10.6.x is altering Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist to remove the two entries for mpg videos under WebPluginMIMETypes, using say Pref Setter
After restarting Safari, mpg files should download (they do here)
The preference pane likely makes the same or similar changes.
which sounds harder still, right ? but you only do it once.

After installing Fireworks CS3, when clicking a link to a PNG
image, IE displays a download dialog instead of opening the image.
I am not sure why Fireworks becomes the default file handlers of
PNG and GIF without asking or notifying the user during
installation, but I think this is the cause.

Fireworks uses a form of .png as its native file format
(which many people find unfortuante) The Fireworks format includes
some additional information, allowed by the specification, so you
want to make sure that, if you want a .png for the Web, you
export from you Fireworks image, not just
save.
In any case you can re-associate the file types. Exactly how
you re-associate file types depends on your OS.
In Vista, right click on a .gif and select 'Properties.'
Under 'Type of file', click on the 'Change'
button and change the associate application. Make sure the
checkbox next to 'Always use the selected program to open this kind
of file' is checked.

Okay, fair enough. Is there a way I can have the video file
automatically download to their desktop? I tried getURL with a path
to the file, but then it tried to open in the browser and just
brings up the #404 error. If I zip the video file it automatically
downloads, but the client doesn't want the videos zipped.

Safari downloading pages instead of opening them

so, this is weird. in the last two days, safari has occasionally downloaded a page rather than opening it. my download manager opens up, and a new file appears on my desktop. opening it gives me garbage.
there is no pattern to it--it happens maybe 20% of the time, and it doesn't happen to the same pages consistently.
it happens both when i follow links and when i type in urls directly.
anyone got any ideas? thanks!

When you say download manager do you mean a third party manager such as speed download? Or do you mean the safari download system?

Asp requests download instead of opening document in new window

I go to certain websites with the new FF 4 and attempt to access a document that uses asp and FF downloads it instead of opening it. Works fine in Safari, Chrome, Opera but not in FF.

Safari will not download, instead it opens a blank page

Whenever I try to download a file, Safari will not trigger a download. Instead, it opens up a blank grey page. The full download address appears in the address bar, with the file name I'm trying to download at the end ( like.... http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/pdc/11.1.102.55/install_flash_p layer_osx.dmg )
but the download never triggers. My primary Browser is Safari Version 5.0.5 (6533.21.1), but I have also tried to download using Firefox 3.6.3. which also never triggers. I'm running OS 10.6.8 on a late 2008 MBP.
Normally, I can use the "Download linked File" function, but occasionally a website will only let me download a .html, or .php file instead. At the moment, I am trying to download the most recent Adobe Flash Player update, but its being a right mare!!! Hope someone can help me please!!

Your Safari version is outdated (because you moved it) and probably incompatible with your Mac OS version. However, that doesn't explain the problem with Firefox.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, monitor, and Ethernet, if applicable. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account that has the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, perhaps including wireless networking on certain Macs. If you usually connect to the Internet via WiFi, and it doesn’t wohrk in safe mode, connect using an Ethernet cable. If you can’t do that, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and perform a safe login, as follows: Enter your credentials at the login screen, then hold down the shift key and click the “Log in” button. Keep holding the key until the menu bar appears. In this mode, your login items, among other things, won’t load.
In safe mode, test again. Same problem(s) now?
After testing, reboot (if you booted in safe mode) or log out/log in (if you performed a safe login) as usual.

How to Load Progressive-Download Video just when I press Play?

I have set the Progressive-Download video instead of Streaming-Video (because my webserver provider "aruba.it" doesn't offer
streaming videos), in Flash CS4 Professional, and exported to Dreamweaver CS4.
I have also inserted the HTML code in Dreamweaver CS4 to enable FullScreen Playback of Flash .flv Videos.
Now I have a problem:
- When the webpage loads into Internet Explorer 7, it take much time to load all the videos at same time!
Thus I want this:
- I want that the videos start to load just when I press the Play button, individually, not at same time.
- I don't not want that start the load immediately when the webpage opens in IE7.
- I want that the videos start to load content in the same manner of YouTube videos, just when I press play.
How can I do?

File downloads as an application instead of opening properly

I have been experiencing a few problems with my macbook pro 2006
The files download as applications instead of opening properly most of the time, these files are for school, such as word documents and powerpoint presentations, I usually download them from a website or e-mail, it always says it is an application and does not let me open it on the mac, so I go find a PC, but now something screwed up with the PC too, so I can't get any of my school assignments.
My mac also will not allow me to put video from a sony hard drive camcorder, which is a pain because I have editing to do and PC programs are not as good as final cut pro.

Currently I have had to often downloads and sift through all my files to find the ones I want to open into itunes, and it's irritating.

Media is only where the user puts it.
Installing iTunes does not and has never caused media to magically appear on the computer.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer (or backup of the old computer) to the new computer.

Yeah, just as said above, you need to convert it to iPad supported video formats first and then sync it back to the iPad.
Chek the iPad Supported Video and Audio Formats first.

Downloading documents instead of video files

I have been downloading video files off the internet for some time now but in the last month all the files (about 90%) are showing up as Documents. although they work if I open them from VLC. If I try to open them as is, Quicktime gives me a error saying that it cannot open the file and that it's a file quicktime doesn't understand, then it gives me (-2048). I can't even change them from the "open with" thing. can you guys help and tell me how to fix this. I have a feeling it's something simple but I'm not a genius when it comes to computers.
