Dragging Files Copies Them

Hello,
Each time when I go to drag a group of files from one side of my desktop to another, instead of dragigng them (physically moving their location on their desktop), it makes a copy of each of them, and leaves the originals. Thus, I have two of the same icon/file on my desktop. One on the right "Essay" and on the left where I went to drag "Essay 2." Any advice would be appreciated!
Thank you!

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash this file.
com.apple.finder.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

  • Disk image files error when dragging files from them

any disk image file .DMG that i download and it either has a file to drag to the hard drive or has an application in it. They mount fine and i can lookinside them but when i drag a file out it seems to partially copy them but then comes up and says..
Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (Error code -41).
If the dmg file has an installer it starts the installed and asks the normal question and permissions and then where to install to then try's to start but just errors again.
Anyone got any ideas. This is on a Mac intel Mini. Everything runs fine and as i said i fixted permissions it is an administrator account.
I have tried 3 disk images firefox opera and ablelive 5.2 they are not damaged or corrupted
    thanks

I was having the same problem on my G4 Powerbook when I tried to install Adium and TextWrangler from disk images. After trying several things that didn't work I decided to see if my IP filter was the culprit. I opened PeerGuardian and disabled the filters. Then, I downloaded Adium again, and it copied easily from the disk image to my applications folder. Then, I tested TextWrangler and it worked as well. I don't know why that worked, and it might not be your problem, but I thought I'd pass on the info. Hope it helps.

  • How can I stop Finder windows from moving when I drag files into them?

I have searched but can't seem to find an answer.
    Thank you.

    HI Dave,
Go to ~/Library/Preferences and move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash.
~ (Tilde) character represents your Home Folder.
    Restart your Mac.
    Hopefully that will help.

  • Macbook Pro won't let me move files to HD without authentication. Also when I try to move files from the HD to the desk it just copies them.

My 2013 Macbook Pro running Mavericks 10.9.5 won't let me move files to the HD without authentication. So I have to keep putting my password in. Also when I try to move files from the HD to the desk it just copies them. This just suddenly happened last night. Anyone have any ideas what it could be? Thanks

See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229?viewlocale=en_US - I doubt that it will solve your problem, though. You may want to post on the iPhoto forum - that's where all of the iPhoto experts hang out.

  • Is it possible to combine pdfs from software containing the file by dragging and dropping them?

We have a piece of software that we profile PDF files into it and then have a need to combine those PDFs into one file.  Is it possible to just drag and drop from the software into the combine files area?  I know if you open the files first, you can do that or if you save the documents locally, then you can combine them.  It would be ideal to just select the files in the software, then drag and drop them into the combine pdf window.  We are using Adobe Pro XI.

    Hi Hawk2000,
The workflow you are talking about is very much possible with Acrobat and a good example is Microsoft Outlook from which we can select multiple e-mails and simply drag into Acrobat combine dialog box for combining.
What happens when you drag files from you software? Is it public software?
    Can we test your software?
    Regards,

  • How do I drag files in Finder to a different folder?

How do I drag files in Finder to a different folder?

First, open one Finder window, and then, open another one pressing Command and N keys.
On one window, go to the folder where the files are, and on the other one, go to the folder where you want to put your files. Choose them with the Command key (or select all if you want to transfer all of them, with Command and A keys) and drag them to the other Finder window

  • How do I transfer PDF files from PC to IPAD using Itunes 12.1.2.  Previous versions let me drag file in Itunes to Ipad and files appeared under Ibook but can't get it to work in latest 12.1.2 version.

How do I transfer PDF files from PC (Windows 7) to IPAD using Itunes 12.1.2.  I would like to do files manually rather then auto synch.  Previous versions let me drag file in Itunes to Ipad and files appeared under Ibook and then I could move them to an appropriate collection title.  The interface appears to have changed in the latest ITunes version and I am not sure what the proper procedure is.

King_Penguin - Thanks it worked perfectly.  I had my pdf files copied into ITunes on my PC but when I clicked on a pdf file to copy it I thought the sidebar would appear with my IPAD name and then I would drag it over.  I didn't realize that I needed to click-and start dragging it towards the left-hand side for the sidebar to appear.  It worked like a charm - THANKYOU!!!

  • Can't drag files. Help!

Hoping someone can help me. I came the other day to find that none of the files on our iMac G5 could be dragged. Stuff on the desktop couldn't be moved, re-arranged, etc. Even in iTunes, files couldn't be dragged to new playlists.
I'm not sure what happened. My wife said she was playing a game that crashed suddenly, then all of a sudden this.
Any advice? I just can't figure this one out.
    Thanks in advance.

Didn't work … I'm ready to kill this machine!
The funny thing is, because I can no longer drag files, I had to control click on those files to move them to the trash.
For the life of me I can't figure out what's going on. I'm thinking I may have the bring the machine to the local Mac dealer or reinstall the OS.
    Any other thoughts?

  • Can't drag files from itunes library (to anywhere) anymore.

Recently I've noticed I can no longer drag files from the library in my itunes. I can't drag them to playlists, and I can't drag them to the desktop.
I have repaired permissions and even tried removing the library.xml file and let it generate a new one, but I still get the same result.
I am on a mac os 10.6.8 Macbook Pro.
I'm not sure when ths started happening, but I wonder if it has something to do with an itunes update. I have the newest version and always dwnload the updates. I can still add files to the library by control-clicking the files and selecting the option in the dropdown list. This isn't an intentional change in the way the program works is it? Is no one else having this problem??

Iphone will sync or manually manage with one and only one computer at a time.
Syncing or manually managing to another will indeed erase the current content and replace with the content from the new computer.

  • Can't drag files out of the dock folders/stacks

On Mavericks I'm able to drag files out of the folders/stacks I have on the Dock (Downloads, Documents, etc.) just as you would anywhere on OSX. But, for some reason my mom (Mavericks) and my fiancee (Mountain Lion) can't. I've tried checkin the permissions for those folders (in Get Info) and they have read/write permissions. This only happens in list view, not in fan, grid or automatic. Is there some hidden setting or something else that would allow them to be able to drag files?

For downloads, go to your user folder downloads and remove them there. Same for Applications. To remove alias from the Dock hold down the command key while dragging them from the Dock.
If that does't work, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. Then try a Dock reset.
Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:
    killall Dock
Log out/in and test. If that doesn’t work, you need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Use the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Applications Support/Dock.  Move the .db to your desktop.
    Then try a dock reset.
    Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command
    killall Dock
Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.
If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.

  • Can't drag files and folders to iTunes

You're supposed to be able to drag files and folders from windows into iTunes, either just to add them to the library or to a specific device or playlist. However, when I try to do this now it just shows a little red circle with a slash like when you try to copy songs from an ipod to a computer. I can still add files by the 'add file to library' function but this makes it a lot harder to add stuff to the right playlists on my iPod. How do I get this to work again?
I have iTunes 10.7, but I have tried iTunes 11 and it has the same problem.

iTunes for Mac (unlike iTunes for Windows) cannot convert WMA files. You will need to use another Mac program, such as EasyWMA, to convert them into an iTunes compatible format.

  • Can't drag files from Organizer 13 to different folder

I recently installed PSE13 on my PC running Windows 8.1.  I've also downloaded the latest update and even the patch which corrected the mouse scrolling problem. Now I have a new problem. When I'm in the Organizer, I am no longer able to drag files to a different folder. For instance, I have a folder on my desktop which contains the pictures and videos I downloaded from my camera. I am able to see these files within the organizer, and the organizer clearly shows that the files are contained within the folder on my desktop. What I want to do within the organizer is to move these files by dragging them to my Pictures folder. The program will no longer allow me to accomplish this task. I use to be able to do this with no problem, but not anymore!!  Is there a fix for this problem???  Thanks!  Jeff

No, there is no error message. Your second question, asking if I first selected thumbnails, etc., prompted me to go back to the organizer to review exactly what happens when I try to select and drag a file to a new folder. And, because of your question, I have discovered new results: the first time I tried to select a picture, the normal hand appeared, but when I attempted to drag the file to a folder, all I got was the hand drawing a dotted rectangular box, and I could not drag the file to any folder. I tried this two more times with the same result. Then, I discovered that if I click on the far right side of the file thumbnail, I could actually drag it to a different folder. So, now I know precisely where to click on a thumbnail in order to successfully drag it to a folder. However, in previous versions, I could click anywhere on the thumbnail and drag without any problems. So, I will consider this problem "mostly" solved, and hopefully Adobe will address this problem on a future update. Thanks for your help!! Jeff

  • No Longer Able To Drag Files/Songs/Photos etc.

I recently had a start up issue which was resolved by an Apple Genius at my local Apple Store but since he waved his magic wand I have been unable to drag files on the desktop, songs into playlists in itunes, photos into folders in iphoto etc.
If I hold down the trackboard on the desktop and drag it I can draw a box to highlight various files but that it is.
I recently posted this as part of another topic and had suggestions regarding resetting the PMU and trying the different gestures within system preferences > keyboard and mouse but without any joy.
If I plug in a USB mouse the same issue remains so presumably it is not a problem with the trackboard.
If anyone can help me it would be much appreciated.

Just to be certain, you DID boot into Safe Mode and then restart normally and repair permissions?
It's going to be difficult to back things up without doing an out-and-out clone to a FireWire external drive, since you don't have the capability of dragging and dropping to a CD.
    However, you could try this:
First go to the Finder and select your Home Folder-the one with the house icon. From the File menu, choose Create Archive of "yourshortusername" and see if it compresses it to a manageable size. Once you have the archive of your Home Folder completed, restart into OS 9 and locate that zipped file on your hard drive. See if you can burn it off to CD(s) from the Finder in OS 9.
Needless to say, I've never tried to do this, so I can't guarantee that it will work, but it's worth a try.
This is a system-wide corruption, since it is the same for a new user, so it's not a preference file or something easily corrected (besides which, the normal procedure for troubleshooting preference files is to DRAG them to the Desktop-not possible for you).
Do you happen to have DiskWarrior 4.0? If so, it occurs to me that now would be a good time to use it.

  • Suddenly I can't drag files from explorer into audition anymore.

Hi any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
I was having some trouble with my m-track ASIO interface drivers so I went through some steps to try and fix this, and made some changes to audition and windows 7. I made some changes listed here http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=349411
anyway, none of it helped my issue, and to make matters worse now I cant just drag files from explorer windows into audition (which would usually load them in the menu on the left and place them into multitrack editor)
I can still load files through the open menu but this is pretty inefficient way of doing it.
Now I tried to reverse the changes I made but I still cant drag and drop into audition.
does anybody know what might cause this and how to fix it?
    thanks

Well, just finished my weekly podcast using Garageband and the "new and improved" iTunes. Here are the clunkers I've found:
    1. Original problem of not being able to drag from iTunes to GarageBand. JamButty, I'll try out your workaround... for this show I literally had to drag all of the files I needed out of iTunes into a folder... Then why use iTunes at all?! Really stupid.
    2. I noticed when I dragged the final show off of iTunes to a folder I use to upload to my S3 account, it now just has the black mp3 icon... not the image I use for the show. Granted, not a functional problem, but just stupid none the less why they would eliminate that.
    3. Show notes in the metadata. Usually I'd copy my first paragraph of show notes (what goes on the web page) into Info > Comments in the metadata. And, if was too long, it would just chop off the end of it. This time I got a "bink" sound and nothing copied in. Tried it a couple of different ways with the same results until I figured out to just put half the copy in. Again, stupid, useless, time-consuming change.
I love Apple to death, but I hate what they do sometimes. The make a great product... then eventually screw it up with dumb changes (for example, the latest version of Final Cut)

  • Frequent Finder Lockup: Can't Drag Files

OSX Lion, current gen MBP 17, 2.2Gb i7 w/8Gb RAM
I'm finding that I frequently lose the ability to drag files. It may be linked to selecting a group of files from the desktop or a finder window, and then attempting to drag them. What happens is that you can select files, you can right click on them, but you cannot click-drag. The only choice is to force-quit the Finder. On Finder relaunch dragging is restored. Unlike other file move/copy/drop buggy behavior I've read about, in this case a sleep/awaken or switch user account does NOT restore drag capability.
    Anyone else seeing this issue?
End of day I'll repair permissions and see if that helps.

I'm having the same problem - very frustrating. Running 10.7.2
Before a restart or force quitting Finder, I found that I can view the finder window in the cover flow view mode and drag the preview picture from the top into another finder window though. Its a quick way to get things moving in a hurry - but no where near a fix to what seems like a huge bug to Finder. I hope its fixed soon.
