Dreamweaver CS3 (9) maxed CPU slow performance and FTP issues.

Dreamweaver CS3 (9) maxed CPU slow performance and FTP
issues.
Never mind...I found it.
Of course I have all the firewall, worm, scanning, phishing
filtering, full time protect, and everything else turned off when I
am working on a remote/testing site however I found the Symantec
antivirus email scan being enabled (doesn't it just interact with
my email program?) was getting in the way of DW9 ftp operations,
causing some lagging that was putting DW9 into an unstable mode
during and immediately after (10 seconds) ftp operations.
The CPU still spikes to 99% during ftp functions but DW9
works even though it's likely taxed to the max but when I turn off
email scan DW9 returned to a functioning state during ftp and
remote file view. Whatever it takes huh?
PS: email scanning only never effected DW8.02
My System Info: properly configured (as in: everything works
or I fix it) Toshiba - XP pro SP2 – Pentium 4 - 2.3GHz
– 1.5 GB ram – Intel extreme graphics card 64 MB ram
– Apache 2.2 server – PHP 5 – MySQL 5 -
phpMyAdmin – Dreamweaver 8.02 – Interakt Kollection
3.7.1 – Dreamwweaver 9 - DeVtoolbox – Flash –
GoLive - Photoshop - ImageReady – Illustrator – Acrobat
– CuteFTP – Putty SSH - blabla...)

Thanks for the response. I managed to Google the 'nobody' account and found the explanation.
As you say, I assumed the 'syslogd' process had to do with system logs. I did check the console and couldn't find anything of particular interest in the logs.
I'll continue to monitor but if anyone has any further suggestions please post.
One thing that might also have an impact... my available drive space is now down to less than 5gb (runs anywhere between 1gb and 5gb free depending on what I'm running). I know this causes problems for Parallels as it keeps moaning at me, but would it cause any problems with OSX?
Thanks again,
Tom

Mr David Powers thank you for your quick,
    sorry to say but
the link did not work for me.
i am so ashamed to use a program that crashes while doing a simple "search and replace" action! which i had paid more than 900$.
and also it is so interesting that adobe has released new version CS4 instead of updating the buggy CS3. so the ppl who bought CS3 are dumped!
here i attach the crash error dump file that Dreamweaver creates in its configuration directory.

i hope it helps to diagnose and SEARCH and REPLACE the BUG.

  • In Dreamweaver CS3, can I save to Test AND Production FTP Servers when I press save the document?

Hi, and thank you for reading this.
I've setup a production and test FTP servers in Dreamweaver CS3. It is either saves to production or test server when I click COMMAND+S (CONTROL on PC), but I'd like teh file to be saved on both simultaneously. Persssing Sync the Servers won't work since the servers are not mine and they a bit different, teh files are not the same. I just would like to be able to save 1 file at a time in both production and server with one click.
I've been searching the Interenet but could not find anything other than basic FTP setup. Any help would be appreaciated. Thanks!
    Anton

Hi John, first of all thank you for replying!
The reason why I would like to have Dreamweaver to save to both servers Test and the Production at the same time is because it would save me a lot of time keeping both servers more or less in sync. I have to keep both Test and Production servers syncronized, but only wihtin a specific content. While I test my design I do use Test server, but then the hassle begins when I am asked to make changes to the content.
For example, I have a content page called books.html. I first built it on a Test server. Then switched to the tab called Remote, connect to the Remote Server, and save it. Very simple.
However, then I need to create 10 more pages, lets call them books1.html, books2.html, and so on. Again sync them with the Remote server.
All is great, but then my boss comes and say, hey there is a mistake on these files: books3, books4, books7, and books8. Please change the text content on those. So, I know the pages are working fine, I just need to update the text on both Test and Remote servers.
So at this point I have to open these 4 files, change the text, then SAVE ALL to Test server. Then, I switch to Remote tab, go back to files press any key and 'Delete' keys so that Dreamweaver would see the change in file so that it would be able to save it. Then again 'SAVE ALL' to the Remote server.
This is happening very OFTEN. It would save me so much time and brain power remembering which files I should sync if I am in a hurry and jump from one project to another, losing track of small changes in files when there are a lot of .html files.
CMS is only in development now so I have to work with what I got. As to regard to backups, I use Time Machine so I am set with that. Plus I use MAMP. So basically I first use MAMP for testing, then upload changes to the Test server with all the BIG databases, and only then to Remote (production) with real Database. However, this is only when I develop new pages, very often I just need to modify what's already has been created. So that's why a feature like Save to BOTH servers (Test and Remote) would make a big difference to me.

  • DW CS3 locked files and FTP issues - cannot update pages

I just upgraded to Dreamweaver CS3 and now cant seem to
update any of my web pages. I can connect to the server etc and see
my files locally & remotely but when I try check out a file to
update it I get an error message saying 'index.html is a locked
file and can be viewed but not changed'. All I can do with it is
view it. When I try to unlock any files locally nothing happens????
This was not an issue before I upgraded.....I have checked my
FTP details with a version on my pc and there are exactly the
same.....does anyone know is this an issue with mac version of
    Dreamweaver CS3?
    Help!!!

Can you post a link to your child or template page and tell
    us what you have
    changed that didn't propagate?
Here are seven common mistakes that will result in changes
    not propagating
    from Template to child -
    1. Rename the Templates folder
    2. Move the Templates folder to some other folder level in
    the site other
    than root level
    3. Move a template out of the Templates folder.
    4. Make changes to an editable region of the template (which
    will not
    propagate)
    5. Assume that template changes can be uploaded to the server
    without also
    uploading the changed local files
    6. Corrupt the site cache so that the link between template
    and child page
    is broken
7, Improperly create your child pages by simply opening the
    template,
adding page specific content, and resaving the template with
    an *.html
extension rather that its *.dwt extension. (you can tell if
    this is the case
by looking at the code on a child page - if you see anything
    like <!--
TemplateBeginEditable... then this is what you have done). If
    you *have
done this*, then recreate the child pages (in DWCS3) using
    FILE | New > Page
from Template, select the template and click CREATE.
The 6th problem can be repaired by using SITE | Advanced >
    Recreate Site
Cache, and the six others can be fixed by just not doing
    them. Have you
    done any of those?
    Or, read this -

I'm having a problem with Xorg, I don't know what it is but I guess it has something to do with configuration problems because in Ubuntu eerything works out of the box.
    My problems are these:
    1. Xorg is using arround 30% cpu when the computer is idle and very simple animations in kde like minimize a window are performed very poorly.
    2. Compiz' performance is very poor and chopy
    3. h264 videos are not wachable. it feels like watching 3fps videos.
as i mentioned above, i don't have any of these problems with ubuntu.

  • Slow performance and org.samba.winbindd.plist problem

    Hi -
I'm a newbie to the forum -- so please forgive any mis-steps in etiquette.
My machine has been experiencing hanging that gets progressively worse (more frequent, longer hangs) the more I keep working on it.  Spinning beach ball, sometimes frozen cursor -- it resolves itself eventually but performance is so bad it is a major impediment.  I have run DiskWarrior, repaired permissions over and over -- that seems to help, briefly, but once I do some work in Word and Safari, the problem re-emerges and builds again.  During a visit to Genius Bar earlier this week, we wiped the drive, reinstalled OS, and then restored from Time Machine.  The issue came back immediately (I should have played around before the restore to confirm that with clean OS install, things worked).   EtreCheck report is below.  I know that Symantec/Norton is likely a source of the problem but I have to have that particular anti-virus software on my machine to connect to work server :-(
I am thinking my next step is to uninstall and reinstall Norton AntiVirus -- and only use AntiVirus -- avoiding the other components of Norton Security.  But I would love some input on that.  And I am also wondering if the problem might not be caused by the following?
    Problem System Launch Daemons: ℹ️
      [not loaded] org.samba.winbindd.plist
I've searched for information about what to do when that shows up as an issue but didn't find an answer to that issue specifically.
From what I read in my searches, it seems that having only 2 GB of memory is likely also an issue -- but if that's the case, I don't understand why it hasn't been until now?
Thank you in advance for information/assistance!

I'm replying to myself because I think I found the prime culprit behind my system hanging.  Although there are clearly multiple problems in my system, it appears that a somewhat hidden feature of Norton Firewall was pushing it over the edge.
A subsequent rerun of EtreCheck showed this:
    Top Processes by CPU: ℹ️
          49% symdeepsight-extractor

I had disabled all of Norton's firewall functions already.  But a websearch on symdeepsight-extractor and system problems told me about the following step I hadn't taken.  In Norton Firewall, advanced settings, I turned off Norton Deepsight Community Download, and Norton Deepsight Community Submission.
Safari speeded up immediately -- video that wouldn't play earlier played without a hitch -- hanging is (mostly) gone.  Hope this info helps someone else even though the subject line is off target!

  • Cisco RV 120W VERY slow performance and being unreachable

    Hello!
I have strange issues with my RV 120W, which I bought after the recommendations from a Cisco/Linksys pre-sales support. I'm using this unit for SOHO environment with two clients (computers) connected and a few mobile clients. Nothing special and nothing complex. I replaced my WRT610N router with this one on behalf of the VPN features, the RV 120W offers.
Before initial setup I upgraded firmware to it's latest (1.0.1.3).
The issues I'm having with this thing are:
    - very slow WLAN performance. And I mean - very, very slow. After doing some analysis I'm having a drop from 10Mbit/s to a stable speed of only a few houndrets of kilos per second. Even less. An average, constant speed test show no more than 50-80 kB/s. And I have a 20/20Mbit link.
    - very slow WAN - LAN performance. Although not as slow as WLAN, even LAN is somehow slow with an average throughput from WAN to LAN show no more than 15Mbit/s.
    - WAN IP address - host cannot be reached. After setting up the router to be able to echo the PING and be remotely managed, I can achive both services JUST for about 20 seconds after the unit reboots. After those 20 seconds, remote management sessions are timed out and the host is unreachable. But If I reboot the router again, I get it to work again - for no more than 20 seconds.
As this is my first (more) professional router, I'm not really sure if I've got my VPN setup correctly. I cannot get it my VPN to work either and I can't tell if these issues are related.
    Any help would be appriciated.
    Thanks

    Hey Juka,
Sorry your having issues with the rv120w.
I seen that you upgraded the firmware on the rv120w when you got it.  I always do a factory reset of the device when upgrading the firmware.  I will first backup my configs, factory reset the device, then reload the configs.
Try that since you did do a firmware upgrade to see if the device speeds up for you.
The wireless issues you were describing, I would do a wireless scan using a wireless analysis software like INSSIDER or something like it, that way you can see the wireless channels that are being used and set your router manually to a channel that has no or the least congestion.
Try this and let us know what you get.

  • Slow performance and frequent errors.

I have all three logging options enabled and I've been looking all over the place all day for answers to this weird problem we have with WAWS. Every single web site we have has an abnormally high error 500 rate that is completely unacceptable. Based on
the logs it's something to do with FastCGI but the errors are often vague. Sometimes we'll get a status code of 0x00000000 and FastCGI saying that the it executed successfully. Other times it's 0x80004005, or something else. Our performance is also all over
the place, sometimes our sites will respond pretty snappy, other times it takes at least  4 seconds or more before anything happens. Three of our sites are set at scaled to the Shared level, and we've purchased two ClearDB databases to power the sites.
We've switched between both PHP versions, and edited the web.config files to add extra logging but all we get are errors like "The server encountered an internal error" or something along those lines. Is there something we're doing wrong or is this
typical of WAWS? Our client is launching their site pretty soon and we've been stress testing to give them an answer on how much their site can handle but the error rate is just too darn high. Please advise!?

This is not typical. There are ways you can troubleshoot this. See
this blog post for more information.

  • Workaround for slow performance and poor resolution with RED R3D files in After Effects CC 2014 (13.0)

    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2014/06/red-r3d-problems-after-effects-cc-2014-13-0.ht ml
The After Effects team are investigating a bug in After Effects CC 2104 (13.0) where RED (.R3D) files are very slow and the image resolution is poor, about 1/8 sampling.
The following workaround has been reported to solve the problems in some cases:
    Save the project.
Choose Edit > Purge > All Memory & Disk Cache.
Please post in this thread about whether or not this workaround helped you.

Intentionally cross-linking threads: this issue was first reported in this thread, which has an ongoing discussion:
AE 2014CC RED R3D files support broken - footages looks bad, everything slow.
The thread you are in now is the comment thread for the blog post. Please post in whichever thread makes more sense for you. I am monitoring both.

  • Slow performance and high memory usage

I do website development so I have Firefox, IE, Chrome and Opera, all updated to the most recent versions. However, for as long as I can ever remember, Firefox has always used more system resources.
As an example, I opened up one site in all 4 browsers and here is the memory usage for each one:
    Firefox 200,016
    Chrome 5,476k
    Chrome 33,504k
    Chrome 2,008k
    Chrome 4,592k
    Chrome 6,374k
    Chrome 31,320k
    Total 83,274k
    IE 44,412k
    IE 6,104k
    Total 50,516k
    Opera 70,704k
This Firefox had all add-ons disabled. Yet I still use Firefox as my default browser mainly due to a couple of add-ons that I find very helpful for what I do.
My question is why does Firefox have to be so much of a resource hog? Can't programmers write tighter code that executes faster? It's a great browser but when gaming, I usually use one of the other browsers.
I've included the clipboard from the troubleshooting information so hopefully that will help someone pinpoint a reason for this problem.
All-in-all, good work on the version 8.

Have you tried creating a new profile to see if a vanilla profile (with '''no''' add-ons) is also slow for you? One of the things showing in your troubleshooting report is a network printer. A fresh profile without that network printer and with no residual add-on data may be considerably faster.

  • Slow performance and display problems

I've already submitted this question, but thought I would change the subject to make it more descriptive:
I just recently installed Acrobat 8 Professional on an older machine that I have. It is running Windows XP Professional SP3, processor 2.4GHz with 512 RAM. It has only MS Office and Acrobat loaded on it.
I can create a PDF document, but when I pull up the Properties menu, the program seems to have a delayed response and also it has garbled text and you can see everything from the document showing through on the menu so you can't read the menu.
Could this be a memory issue or is there something else that I need to check. Thanks.

Experiment with section module. My i945 is
    load "dbe"
    load "freetype"
    subsection "extmod"
    option "omit xfree86-dga"
    endsubsection
Try to comment busid in section device and add another section device before your existing one
    section "device"
    identifier "tommy"
    vendorname "unknown"
    boardname "unknown"
    driver "vga"
    endsection
Try the drivers i810 and vesa in section device
My file was created by xorgconfig (run this from the console)

  • Powerbook G4 17 1.67 2GB ram leopard... huge performance and latency issues

    Hardware:
    17" Powerbook G4 1.67GHz with 2GB ram
    System:
    10.5.4 Leopard
*Ever since i upgraded to Leopard, i have noticed tremendous latency / pinwheel issues in many areas such as:*
    1. Switching between running applications hangs up sometimes as long as 15 seconds
    2. Video playback in quicktime is choppy
    3. Various programs take a tremendous amount of time to open
    4. Opening relatively small illustrator and or photoshop files pinwheels for unusually long time
    5. Opening finder windows unusually slow
One of the MOST frustrating of all issues:
    6. *Powerbook heats up* rather quickly... gets very hot and the fans have NEVER come on... VERY frustrating, since i would have no problem with noise if it meant better performance...
*Overall, the entire computer feels VERY sluggish*
i have tried clean installs, as well as regular maintenance... and upgraded my RAM to the max of 2GB
Is there anything else i can do? Anyone else having similar problems and or know the best way to repair?
DESPERATE for a solution here... while i realize the G4 can only handle so much, i just feel like it cant possibly be this slow under leopard... or can it?!
ANY HELP AT ALL greatly appreciated...
    Best,

Have you run the Apple hardware test? One of the tests is to specifically test the fans.
*Overall, the entire computer feels VERY sluggish*
How much free disk space do you have? You need 10% to 15% free for systems usage. Less than that an performance can really slow down.
If you bring up the activity monitor, under system memory, what does it say for page ins and outs?

  • Slow startup and password issue.

    Hi all...
    Happy new year...!
As a little christmas present for myself I purchased a Crucial M4 256GB SSD for my MacPro 4,1 (2.26GHz, 22GB RAM, 10.8.2). I'm a semi-pro photographer and wanted a bit of a speed up for my processing etc etc. So yesterday I cloned my existing system drive to the SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner. I then installed the SSD in the spare superdrive bay (my other 4 bays are used).
Just as a background my previous startup/shutdown times on this machine where quite slow averaging around 90s for startup and around 45s for shutdown. I had assumed that this was normal and was just a slow syetm HD issue. When I changed the startup disk to the new SSD and booted up the startup time did decrease but not significantly... its now exactly 59s whilst the shutdown times go down to around 30s. In use the speed of the OS is massively improved with applications and local file copying blazingly fast. I've a few friends who upgraded MacBook Pro's and others macs with SSD's and their startups are around 10-15 seconds....!!! I'm not overly bothered by the slow startups/shutdowns but I am curious as to what might be causing these delays. In testing today I deleted everything unecessary from my user account startup items, disabled various apps and checked the /library/startupitems for anything that shoudnt be there. After a couple of hours trying I cant find anything that is effecting the startups and am lost. I'll likely just accept it and move on as in use the SSD is impressive but if anyone has any ideas it'd be appreciated!
A second thing that has happened is that whenever I try to delete/modify/move an app I am now asked to type in my user password. I have tried repairing permissions, checking the permissions of my .Trash folder etc etc but as of yet nothing has worked. Any ideas...??
Many thanks and Happy New Year yet again.
    Richie

The traditional way an Operating System deals with "deleted" files is to remove ONLY the Directory information and simply add the data blocks to the free pool. Those "deleted" data blocks are not cleared.
This works in rotating drives because:
    1. The logical block size is the same or larger than the physical drive block size.
    2. Rotating magnetic media are block-for-block re-writable.
In SSDs physical blocks are much larger "superblocks", and re-writing a portion of a superblock is a slow and difficult read-modify-write operation. In addition, since the OS did not notify the drive what data are no longer needed, deleted data continue to be carefully maintained and re-written by the drive. Soon every write operation becomes a read-modify-write, and performance deteriorates.
In my opinion, this nearly-full condition is likley to cause drive failure. Something more than wishful thinking is required.
Apple enables TRIM on the drives they install directly. They do not do so for third-party drives, but that is likely because those drives have not been tested by Apple.
I have been using a very small SSD as a boot drive for a while, and periodically consolidate free space followed immediately by erasing free space with a third-party utility. I believe this has kept me out of trouble. My son has been using SSD in his laptop and doing nothing for maintenece, and he has killed two drives in a year.
Trim Enabler utility from groths seems to be working, and makes things simple. Your mileage may vary.
if I notice significant performance slips
You added a much lower latency drive and startup times did not improve significantly. Much of the time required for startup is needed for memory testing. The rest is largely attributable to disk Read/Write times. What more evidence do you need?

  • Raid Performance and Rebuild Issues

    Rebuilding a Raid array
What happens when you have a Raid array and one (or more) disk(s) fail?
First let's consider the work-flow impact of using a Raid array or not. You may want to refresh your memory about Raids, by reading Adobe Forums: To RAID or not to RAID, that is the... again.
Sustained transfer rates are a major factor in determining how 'snappy' your editing experience will be when editing multiple tracks. For single track editing most modern disks are fast enough, but when editing complex codecs  like AVCHD, DSLR, RED or EPIC, when using uncompressed or AVC-Intra 100 Mbps codecs, or using multi-cam or multiple tracks  the sustained transfer speed can quickly become a bottleneck and limit the 'snappy' feeling during editing.
For that reason many use raid arrays to remove that bottleneck from their systems, but this also raises the question:
What happens when one of more of my disks fail?
Actually, it is simple. Single disks or single level striped arrays will lose all data. And that means that you have to replace the failed disk and then restore the lost data from a backup before you can continue your editing. This situation can become extremely bothersome if you consider the following scenario:
At 09:00 you start editing and you finish editing by 17:00 and have a planned backup scheduled at 21:00, like you do every day. At 18:30 one of your disks fails, before your backup has been made. All your work from that day is lost, including your auto-save files, so a complete day of editing is irretrievably lost. You only have the backup from the previous day to restore your data, but that can not be done before you have installed a new disk.
This kind of scenario is not unheard of and even worse, this usually happens at the most inconvenient time, like on Saturday afternoon before a long weekend and you can only buy a new disk on Tuesday...(sigh).
That is the reason many opt for a mirrored or parity array, despite the much higher cost (dedicated raid controller, extra disks and lower performance than a striped array). They buy safety, peace-of-mind and a more efficient work-flow.
Consider the same scenario as above and again one disk fails.  No worry, be happy!! No data lost at all and you could continue editing, making the last changes of the day. Your planned backup will proceed as scheduled and the next morning you can continue editing, after having the failed disk replaced. All your auto-save files are intact as well.
The chances of two disks failing simultaneously are extremely slim, but if cost is no object and safety is everything, some consider using a raid6 array to cover that eventuality. See the article quoted at the top.
Rebuilding data after a disk failure
In the case of a single disk or striped arrays, you have to use your backup to rebuild your data. If the backup is not current, you lose everything you did after your last backup.
In the case of a mirrored array, the raid controller will write all data on the mirror to the newly installed disk. Consider it a disk copy from the mirror to the new disk. This is a fast way to get back to full speed. No need to get out your (possibly older) backup and restore the data. Since the controller does this in the background, you can continue working on your time-line.
In the case of parity raids (3/5/6) one has to make a distinction between distributed parity raids (5/6) and dedicated parity raid (3).
    Dedicated parity, raid3
If a disk fails, the data can be rebuild by reading all remaining disks (all but the failed one) and writing the rebuilt data only to the newly replaced disk. So writing to a single disk is enough to rebuild the array. There are actually two possibilities that can impact the rebuild of a degraded array. If the dedicated parity drive failed, the rebuilding process is a matter of recalculating the parity info (relatively easy) by reading all remaining data and writing the parity to the new dedicated disk. If a data disk failed, then the data need to be rebuild, based on the remaining data and the parity and this is the most time-consuming part of rebuilding a degraded array.
    Distributed parity, raid5 or raid6
If a disk fails, the data can be rebuild by reading all remaining disks (all but the failed one), rebuilding the data and recalculating the parity information and writing the data and parity information to the failed disk. This is always time-consuming.
The impact of 'hot-spares' and other considerations
When an array is protected by a hot spare, if a disk drive in that array fails the hot spare is automatically incorporated into the array and takes over for the failed drive. When an array is not protected by a hot spare, if a disk drive in that array fails, remove and replace the failed disk drive. The controller detects the new disk drive and begins to rebuild the array.
If you have hot-swappable drive bays, you do not need to shut down the PC, you can simply slide out the failed drive and replace it with a new disk. Remember, when a drive has failed and the raid is running in 'degraded' mode, there is no further protection against data loss, so it is imperative that you replace the failed disk at the earliest moment and rebuild the array to a 'healthy' state.
Rebuilding a 'degraded' array can be done automatically or manually, depending on the controller in use and often you can set the priority of the rebuilding process higher or lower, depending on the need to continue regular work versus the speed required to repair the array to its 'healthy' status.
What are the performance gains to be expected from a raid and how long will a rebuild take?
The  most important column in the table below is the sustained transfer  rate. It is indicative and no guarantee that your raid will achieve  exactly the same results. That depends on the controller, the on-board  cache and the disks in use. The more tracks you use in your editing, the higher the resolution you use, the more complex your codec, the more  you will need a high sustained transfer rate and that means more disks in the array.
Sidebar: While testing a  new time-line for the PPBM6 benchmark, using a large variety of source  material, including RED and EPIC 4K, 4:2:2 MXF, XDCAM HD and the like,  the required sustained transfer rate for simple playback of a  pre-rendered time-line was already over 300 MB/s, even with 1/4  resolution playback, because of the 4 4 4 4 full quality deBayering of  the 4K material.
    Final thoughts
With the increasing popularity of file based formats, the importance of backups of your media can not be stressed enough. In the past one always had the original tape if disaster stroke, but no longer. You need regular backups of your media and projects.  With single disks and (R)aid0 you take risks of complete data loss, because of the lack of redundancy.  Backups cost extra disks and extra time to create and restore in case of disk failure.
The need for backups in case of mirrored raids is far less, since there is complete redundancy. Sure, mirrored raids require double the number of disks but you save on the number of backup disks and you save time to create and restore backups.
In the case of parity raids, the need for backups is more than with mirrored arrays, but less than with single disks or striped arrays and in the case of 'hot-spares' the need for backups is further reduced. Initially, a parity array may look like a costly endeavor. The raid controller and the number of disks make it expensive, but if you consider what you get, more speed, more storage space, easier administration, less backups required, less time for those backups, continued working in case of a drive failure, even though somewhat sluggish, the cost is often worth more with the peace-of-mind it brings, than continuing with single disks or striped arrays.

Raid3 is better suited for video editing work, because it is more efficient when using large files, as clips usually are. Raid5 is better suited in high I/O environments, where lots of small files need to be accessed all the time, like news sites, webshops and the like. Raid3 will usually have a better rebuild time than raid5.
But, and there is always a but, raid3 requires an Areca controller. LSI and other controller brands do not support raid3. And Areca is not exactly cheap...
Keep in mind that a single disk shows declining performance when the fill rate increases. See the example below:
A Raid3 or Raid30 will not show that behavior. The performance remains nearly constant even if fill rates go up:
Note that both charts were created with Samsung Spinpoint F1 disks, an older and slower generation of disks and with an older generation Areca ARC-1680iX-12.

  • Heavy FTP usage causing performance and stability issues

We have been having out-of-the-ordinary issues with DMS for the last couple weeks. Examples:
    - There have been cases where certain people could not log in, while others could.
    - Increased numbers of help requests for "DMS not responding".
    - Search is getting slower because the statistics-and-analyze job has trouble running.
We found the Node process was maxed out on memory. It turns out that FTP is served by the Node process. We believe that FTP usage has pushed the Node process to the breaking point.
I would like to see if there is a way to increase server resources for FTP, like we can for Content processes like apps and dav. If that is not possible, we will have to limit FTP users to a number that can be supported by the limitations of the product. Since FTP has been very successful for us in handling many service requests, this would not be a good outcome.
We tried setting the Node process' numprocs to 2, but the system wouldn't start. Another idea we have that might buy us a little is moving FTP to our 2nd apps server, whose Node process is only running one agent. Can we run FTP on multiple Nodes?
I will put in a TAR for this, and post the number when I'm done.

    The TAR number is 6546521.992
