DRM now avaible in Linux?

Well, I was reading some knew and found thishttp://news.cnet.com/8301-17939_109-101 … l?part=rss
And what intriguide me the most was:
The new version differs from previous beta versions of AIR for Linux by fully supporting Flash 10 which includes such niceties as 3-D effects, high resolution text rendering, custom filters, and support for digital rights management (DRM). These features are important for media intensive applications like photo and video editing tools, and applications like Adobe's AIR-based media player software, which make use of the DRM support to serve up protected content.
Does this means we now will be able to play DRM encrypted files?

There is no 'standard' for DRM afaik. I think every seller has its own DRM implementation pretty much, but they all rely on the player checking online for the validity of the license or sth?
Anyway - iPlayer is BBC stuff... I doubt it is targeted at anything else than providing access to the BBC's own audio and video captures (it would make no sense to put tax payers' money into something private corporations could profit off).

  • [SOLVED-partly] Linux and no internet connection

Well, since mid November I have nothing but problems with my Arch Linux machine. I can't get any internet connection on that machine. I have a network at home with 2 windows machines (XP & Vista), a Windows 2003 server running as an Exchange server and DNS server and Domain controller and ps3, xbox 360 and Wii. The two windows machines run on a static IP, the ps3, xbox 360 and Wii run on dhcp. All machines run on LAN through a switch except the Wii it runs on wireless. Now my Arch Linux machine also runs on static IP set up as described in the installation guide via rc.conf, hosts and resolv.conf. As mentioned earlier since mid November I haven't been able to get any internet connection on that machine. I haven't changed anythnig in my setup on the machine or the network. when i start the machine for the first time during a day I actually do the get internet connection and network connection but if I restart then I lose it. I am not able to ping the gateway or the DNS server. I can get interrnet back again I turn off the machine and turn off the motherboard and let the machine cool off for 20 minutes. Then if I turn it on again I have internet again but if i'll have to restart then the problem reappears.
After two weeks with this issue I decided to get network card but that didn't help either I still had the problem. Then I simply bought a new machine (DELL Studio) and did a fresh installation of Arch and STILL the problem exists and it is driving me FREAKING CRAZY NOW!!! I tried to my machine on dhcp but still the same issue. internet on first boot, reboot no internet or network, shutdown machine and motherboard (unplug machine) --> internet again after waiting 20 minutes. None of my other machines running windows or the consoles have problems getting internet. I've tried to run distros on the machines (Ubuntu Live CD) but I have the same problem. I am very close to going back to windows and I REALLY don't want to (been using Linux since 2003) but this problem here is a show stopper/EPIC FAIL. I am very very happy with Arch Linux and really don't want to change distro either. I need suggestions now on what I can look for in order to find the problem. I've already changed network cards, bought a new machine and even bought new switch because we thought it might be the switch causing the problems (8 port switch) because turning off the switch would give me my internet back. Again it is only my Linux machine that is having the connection problems none of the other machines have those.
    PLEASE HELP!!!
    Kind Regards
    André

Well, I celebrated a bit to fast after 30 minutes or so I lost internet connection but not by restarting. I didn't use the computer for like 30 minutes and when I did tried to open a browser nothing happended. I tried then to ping the gateway and the server but couldn't reach them. So I turned off the computer completely for 20 minutes and then I started again and chenged the DNS address from my server to the DNS addresses I get directly from my ISP. So I'm going around the server now and seems to work for now. This morning I could start the machine and restart it 2 times and every time I had internet. Hope this solves it for now, still don't understand what the problem is though.

  • Lack of Mac & Linux Support Hurting Javafx 2.0 Early Adoption and traction.

Lack of Mac & Linux Support Hurting Javafx 2.0 Early Adoption and traction.
Oracle needs to come out with a Mac & Linux Beta built, or let developers know the real story behind Mac OS and Javafx 2.0.

I too would like to at least be able to try the Mac/Linux ports, even knowing that they are behind the Windows version. But just knowing that Oracle is committed to them is enough to ease any nervous feeling that I'm choosing the wrong tech.
I have no problems with the fact that Oracle is concentrating on Windows first. It makes sense. If you have to pick one platform to focus on while you are getting the kinks out, it makes sense for it to be the most popular platform. That's Windows. But there mustn't be too long of a wait for the others. (E.g. if they were in a public beta stage when the Windows version is at final release, that would help boost confidence in the platform.)
So long as they don't make the same mistakes that were made with Swing, where there are too many assumptions that all platforms work the same - so things like Mac's screen menu bar had to be fit in after the fact by Apple using awkward hacks. (I notice that now even popular Linux distros (Ubuntu) are using the screen menu bar concept, though they have managed to fit that into the window manager in such a way that it didn't seem to cause much problems.)

  • DUAL BOOT windows 7 and linux HELP with Current info on BIOS, MBR vs GPT, etc

I have a feeling this should be easier than what I'm making it.  Please educate me on Lenovo's BIOS Setup menus, etc.
I have installed easyBCD in Windows 7, and plan to use it to set up my new boot menu with Linux Mint (and possibly other distros).
I am using a live DVD.  I inserted the DVD and went into SETUP and selected to boot off the DVD drive.  It started to boot into Linux and all was going well.
However, I realized that I had not checked on the Secure features (Secure Boot, EFI).  So I shutdown again and went into BIOS.  I went to the SECURITY menu and Disabled UEFI.  Then I disabled Secure boot.
Tried to boot off the DVD and couldn't get anywhere.  Kept putting me back into the window to select the boot device over and over again.  THought I'd ruined my machine
Anyway, finally stumbled upon STARTUP menu, and put it into EFI Legacy, and I was able to get back into Windows 7.
Obviously before I pursue this further, I need some educaiton on your MENUS, Lenovo and EFI/Secure Boot.
I have a feeling that I can probably now install the Linux but want to make sure my settings are correct before I pursue.
    Thanks, Kim

Hi, thanks for ans.  Your specs are almost identical to my T530 ,which I should have listed.  The only diff is
I have an i7 35something processor.   Same intel card, RAM and HDD, not that that should matter I'm guessing.
I purposely avoided the Nvidia card because of all the heaadaches with Nvidia.
I have to teach a class tomorrow and I need to clean up my notes.  (Definitely not computer related...LOL.)  I don't want to  be stressed out about this during class, so I plan to wait to attempt a new install tomorrow afternoon.
What I have done is find out some more info about dual booting with windows 7.  I went in to windows 7 to shrink the C: partiition and it said I'd have to reserve at least 220 GB for MS!  Not what I wanted; I don't really care a thing for MS.  I was born and raised on Unix and Linux; I never really fiddled with MS after the demise of MS-DOS during my college days.
Given that, and the fact that I'd lose half my 500 GB HDD to the Borg, I may just chuck the entire dual boot thing and just load Linux on it.
If you say you're running Linux on it just fine, that would be a great encouragement.  No HW problems at all? Everything working fine?  Which distro are you using?
I plan to test Mint, Fedora, PCLinuxOS, Mageira (sp?), saybahon (sp again?), Debian Wheezy, and even Pear, LOL. I'll keep trying till I find a distro to run on my Lenovo T530, but I'm guessing all of 'em should do okay.
I have Lubuntu I could give a spin, as well and Crunchbang and Bodhi, but they're all 32 bit.  (I have an antique Dell desktop that I still use down in my woman cave.)

  • Dual-Booting Arch Linux and Windows 7

    Hello,
I am attempting to set up a dual-boot configuration with Windows 7 (installed first), and Arch Linux. When I went to install, I read in the documentation that the AIF doesn't support installing GRUB to a separate partition other than the MBR on the drive. I want to install GRUB separate from the Windows MBR so I can use Easy BCD to chainload the two bootloaders (i.e. installing GRUB on /dev/sda5 instead of /dev/sda). I went through the installation process and tried to install GRUB manually via the instructions given in the documentation. But when I went to boot Arch, I was greeted with the GRUB shell instead of the boot menu. What did I do wrong? And is there any easier way to install Arch this way given that I do not want to overwrite the Windows bootloader? I went ahead and wiped the Linux partitions on my drive, so I am going to do the install again once I have some suggestions.
    Thanks!

    To the original poster:
If you want to chainload both Windows and Arch Linux using your preferred boot manager, you'd have to create a separate 'boot' partition when installing Arch Linux.  When you are in the Arch installation, create a separate partition of about 500 MB, then create the root partition of whatever size you need, and then create swap partition if necessary.  So your HD would resemble something like this:  /dev/sda5=boot partition of 500 MB; /dev/sda6=root partition of ## MB/GB; and /dev/sda7=swap partition of (RAM * 2) GB.  Then continue with the Arch installation procedure until you get to the end where you are prompted to install a boot loader.  Choose GRUB, and install it to the 'boot' partition on /dev/sda5.  This will allow you to chainload Arch via Easy BCD.  What happens is Easy BCD will pass the message to GRUB on /dev/sda5, and GRUB will then load your Arch root system on /dev/sda6.
I hope this helps.  I support your choice in using Easy BCD to chainload Windows and Linux.  Software is, after all, about choice.  Furthermore, you've presented a good reason to use Easy BCD as the main boot loader, which is to save you from unnecessary tinkering with the GRUB shell or Live CDs and whatnot.  However, if you don't want to create the separate 'boot' partition, then you'll have no other choice but to use GRUB or syslinux on the MBR.
Thanks. Yes...I followed the procedure just like you described. I figured that my problem was that I didn't create a separate /boot partition, so I reformatted the partitions I created and redid the install. However, I was not able to install GRUB in the AIF; I had to reboot into the Live CD and install GRUB to my boot partition manually. All is good now as I have a working dual-boot now. Arch Linux has been a sort of learning curve for me, but I have gained valuable knowledge and experience by using this distro.
Yes. I didn't want to mess with GRUB or NTLDR. I know that reinstalling NTLDR is not that difficult, but I didn't want to mess with it at all. It just seemed easier to chainload GRUB to NTLDR using EasyBCD. I'm a sort of "distro-hopper" anyhow, and using this method allows me to cleanly remove any distro I install without having to mess with GRUB or reinstalling NTLDR.
    Thanks!
Glad to hear!  Yes, Arch Linux is a wonderful distribution, and one of my favorites.  It's great for not-so-newbie beginners to learn from.  pacman is one of my favorite package managers, as there is always the latest stable software available in the Arch repos.  Glad everything worked out.  Have fun with Arch!

  • Linux forms6i+patch 1 : no triggers will fire

    Hi there:
We are having significant problems w/ our Redhat 6 linux box as our forms server. (We're opting for apache 1.3 instead of OAS (for right now).) The linux box is running 6i w/ patch 1.
The form appears fine and interacts w/ key strokes and tabs, but absolutely no trigger will fire. No when-button-pressed, no post-query, no key-next-items -- not a thing. If I take the exact same .fmx (compiled on a w2k box) to an NT box running forms 6i server, it works correctly.
Interestingly enough, when a new client loads the f60cgi base page, it prompts the user to download jinitiator 1.1.7.31, but in order to run the form, the client must have 1.1.7.30 (otherwise nothing happens). Maybe there is some sort of synch problem?
We're also using a netscape client since IE shows no cursor, and tabs don't work.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

Just now I upgrade my system from kernel26-firmware to linux-firmware, in X (Awesome WM).
After press Y and pacman start downloading, I'm afk for a while (take a bath), when I'm come back
My system freeze and proses show that system still make mkinitcpio for fallback.
I hard reset, and boot. Boot failed in 10 seconds message because it can't detect my filesystem.
Follow suggestion that I need add some parameters I can boot.
Then I check with pacman -Syu, and you can guess there's still db.lck. Then I remove it, and invoke pacman -Syu again, pacman failed because there's already file from linux-firmware on disk.
I try to downgrade, but failed with the same reason. Then I remove all folder and file that conflict, and install kernel26-firmware then upgrade to linux-firmware, now I have linux-firmware on my system.
Learn a lot from that problem, any thought guys ?! Maybe some of you have a better way to solve something like that ?!

All I can say is that when the linux-firmware package got into [testing], I switched without problems on my laptop. I 'migrated' to the linux-firmware package on my server a few hours ago and it went smoothly too. I don't really think your problem has anything to do with the firmware package, since that doesn't trigger an initcpio rebuild, nor are there any file conflicts between both firmware packages.

  • Gentoo Linux and Microsoft Failover Clusters / Hyper-V

    Hello,
Hoping there are a few people on the boards familiar with running Gentoo Linux guests under Microsoft FailOver Cluster / Hyper-V hosts.
I have four Gentoo Linux guest VMs (running kernel 3.12.21-r1) running under the Microsoft Failover Cluster system with Hyper-V as the host. All of the Hyper-V drivers are built into the kernel (including the utilities and balloon drivers) and generally they
    run without issue.
For several months now, however, I have been having strange issues with them. Essentially they stop responding to network requests after random intervals. However, these intervals aren't a few minutes or hours from each other; more like days or even weeks before
one of them will stop responding on the network side.
The funny thing is that the VMs themselves on the console side still responds. However, if I issue a reboot command on the externally non-responsive VM, the system will eventually get to a stage where all of the services are stopped and then hangs right after
the "mounting remaining system ro" line (or something like that).
The Failover Cluster Manager then reports that the system is "Stopping" but the system never reboots.
I have to completely restart the HOST system so that either (A) the VM in question transfers to another host and starts responding again or (B) when the HOST comes back up I can work with the VM again.
This *ONLY* happens on the Gentoo Linux guest VMs and not my Windows VMs.
Wondering if anyone has hints on this.
    Thank you for your time.
    Regards, Christopher K.
